Island Spice - Caribbean restaurant in Kansas City, United States
Island Spice in Kansas City
Description
Privilege
Been here twice both times there jerk chicken was dry. The first time ok, maybe I just came on a bad day. But the second time I ordered it, the chicken was so dry that they meat was shriveled up. It was Chicken Jerky instead of Jerk Chicken 🥲. I like to try a place atleast 3 times before I leave a review but yall are not going to fool me again with the dry chicken😕
MoreNEVER been here before but in Florida for a long time. Lol 😂 Just Googling to see whats out there so this is now on my Hit List whenever I touch that side. The food looks good and makes me drool.
MoreTHEY HAVE VERY GOOD FOOD HERE.
The jerk chicken n fried plantain were excellent!
I love this place. The jerk wings are fire and affordable. Come in early to grab the lunch special, and the fresh patties sometimes sell out by the evening. Homemade pineapple-ginger juice is spicy and sweet.
MoreThe food was amazing, staff was friendly. I usually go to Sankofa, but they were closed, but Island Spice did not disappoint. The cury chicken was a hit. Tender and juicy, aaand they gave enough gravy to saturate my rice and peas! Definitely will be back to try thise ox tails!!!
MoreThe whole experience was AMAZING!!!! We had the brown stew chicken with extra spice on the side 😋😋! Nice and Spicy 🌶 . The Long Island was the best mixed drink I’ve ever had , it was the perfect balance . I couldn’t taste the liquor but I could definitely feel it ! Last but not least the homemade ginger beer soooo yummmy ! It was nothing but good vibes and a good time ! If I ever visit Kansas again I’ll definitely come back ! p.s they’ll be starting Karaoke on Fridays.
More9/20/2022 - Its so good!! My kids love it and its not too spicy (they might have that option if you like your food spicyIve tried the Curried chicken, brownstew chicken and a bite of the braised beef as well. And their festivals that come with, good too!Per person though l would say between $10-$20 depends on what you get
MoreGood food, good drinks and positive energy. You can tell the food is cooked with love.
MoreGreat food! Seems very authentic and is delicious. Highly recommend the jerk chicken! (I think its actually pork but is very good and has some nice spiceThe only thing is that the area of town is not the best, so you may want to get your food to go or go with some friends.
MoreThis is my favorite Caribbean place to eat in KC since I moved here from South Florida. Ive tried other locations in the KC area and this is the one I keep coming back to.
MoreThe meals are always fresh and delicious!!😋
Delicious food! Great portions, the seasoning is 🔥
Eaten here many times. Great food. Specials daily.
Their curry chicken is so good. All their food has good flavors but the curry is my favorite.
MoreFood is crazy goooood! I got the oxtails and the jerk chicken and I’ve been raving about it all day. I will definitely be back!
MoreSo good. Full of flavor! Great prices
This is curry goat Tasted great too much for me Went into food coma.
Food is great , hate to even have to leave a bad review but we Waited over an our to receive order , and this isnt the first time its happened. Dont sell items you dont have then continue to say itll be 15 more minutes every 30 minutes . Very unprofessional.
MoreGreat restaurant and good prices. The jerk chicken and brown stew is good.
Curry goat and jerk chicken are amazing! Wash it down with some Ting!
Huge portion, I split into 3 meals. Its simple, efficient, similar taste with meals in cafeteria back in my student life.
MoreI got the curry chicken , jerk chicken , oxtails, cabbage , rice , ginger lemonade omg amazing 🥰🤍
MoreI love Jamaican food! When we drove by, I knew I had to try this place out. I ordered the Jamaican jerk chicken and a chicken wrap. The Jamaica jerk chicken was several pieces of chicken smothered in jerk sauce over a bed of red beans and rice with a side of cabbage and a piece of fried bread. Both the jerk chicken and the wrap were very good, although if I was to do it again I would just do the wrap. I was hoping for Jamaican beef patties, but they were sold out. If you like Jamaican food check it out!
MoreIt was nasty!! They have really bad meat! I had the jerk chicken and it had no taste, like they rushed to cook it. Not going back you can tell they don’t have money to get good products.
MoreReally good!! I dont know a lot about Caribbean food but this was delicious. I got the Thursday special, the brown stew chicken and I would highly recommend, I ordered online and picked it up in the drive thru. Im excited to try their other stuff too
MoreGot the Curry chicken and it was awesome...the young man who was at the counter was very professional and respectful...glad I stopped here!!!
MoreLove loved loved it! 1st time customer and the food was amazing. My boyfriend brought me here because we like to try places weve never been. Hes been here before but I havent. Will definitely return.
MoreI got the brown stew chicken and it was too drowny, 3 for effort but do not recommend
MoreFirst time eating there today and they didn’t disappoint. Timely service and DELICIOUS food!
MoreThis was our first time here when I say this the best Caribbean restaurant I’ve been to since leaving NY one of the owners came to check on us while we waited on our food She is one of the most nicest caring people I have met the whole staff was amazing they have musicians on Friday and Saturday and they were also bomb The food and drinks was a 10 out of 10 if you are in the Belair Edgewood area of Maryland make sure you stop by you will not be disappointed we will definitely be back
MoreRice wasn’t all the way cooked was still hard pieces don’t know if they was rushing or what. The curry was ok I’ve had better at other places in Kc
MoreDelicious. Located in a former bank drive thru. Food not as spicy as I had anticipated. Service was fast. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Only negative was the reggae music that was playing too loud made it difficult to hear the cashier through the plexiglass screen.
MoreOMG. I really like this place. The food is fresh and hot with good service. Do not let small space fool you. The food is delicious.
MoreFirst and foremost I want to comment on the customer service. Even though I ordered takeout Dave ensured to provide the best customer service. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself was great. Now for the food. Jeeeeesus! This was by far the best Jamaican food I’ve ever had and I’ve had my share of Jamaican food. This place is a gem and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone.
MoreI appreciated getting almost a 1/4 chicken in my lunch special meal. The stew chicken was special. I wasn’t expecting such a BBQ sauce-based jerk chicken, though. That might be a KC thing. I was hoping for a nice Scotch Bonnet kick—just my preference. Keep up the good work, brethren.
MoreThe Jerk chicken taste like it’s soaked in barbecue sauce. Overall flavor was more American then Caribbean. Not worth trying if you want actual Caribbean flavors.
MoreFIRE aint even the word to describe the food..I mean the chicken literally falls off the bones and melts in my mouth. Perfect amount of seasonings. And the side of festivals is amazing to dip into the curry sauce. Mmmmmmm!!! God bless the sweet lady and her sons. Thank you for this place! :D
MoreToo many red flags. N I don’t even want to get into that….But I was craving caribbean food… how I ordered jerk chicken but it taste like red herring?????? I wasted money! If u want authentic caribbean food this is not the place to go
MoreExcellent atmosphere and superb food. I had the curry goat, which was tender and delicious. The service was very good even though the owner was doing double duty as server and bartender on the night we were there...very friendly and the cook delivered our food to the table herself. Great date night choice!
MoreI dont know I personally loved everything about my meal. I tried Jamaica Gs and Island Spice within a week of each other and Island Spice got the better oxtails. But Jamaica Gs jerk was bussing down Island Spice. Two great Jamaican restaurants that I advise to try out both and see which one you like the best.
MoreMy oxtails had 0 to no meat & the little meat I did get, half of it was fat. My beans & rice were delightful but my cabbage was salty & my cornbread was tough & dry. My first time trying that place & for $67 Im sadly disappointed. im normally a very lenient food critic but, this experience was unacceptable
MoreDissatisfied!! The ease of online ordering was great. However the food itself was distasteful even down to the rice & peas. Curry goat tasted funny as of it was old & had little seasoning. I didn’t even taste the cabbage due to the appearance. The last straw was when I seen a lady walk by with a fish in her bare hands.
MoreWe have just arrived in Jamaica in Kansas City Missouri. Were trying out this new place and I won a contest and the pictures will show you what the contest was all about.
MoreThis was my first time eating Jamaican food it was delicious I had the Jerk chicken, cabbage and reb beans and rice. I got the lunch special and the portion size was very big. I would recommend anyone who loves home cooked food give this a try.
MoreFood was amazing. Service was good. Im glad I ordered ahead.
We had a pretty large order including oxtails, curry chicken, cabbage, rice and peas, escovitch (fish), and rum cake. Everything was great, and the curry chicken especially was some of the best I have had. If I had to nitpick, Id say the oxtails could have been more tender, and we found the rum cake to be so dense and rich that it was hard to eat. However, I would absolutely come back here. The service was great, and we generally loved the food.
MoreMake sure you call ahead! I wanted to try this place and figured "why not" as Im driving past 39th. I waited 40 minutes for my food and while it was delicious I wish Id known to call ahead. I got the curried goat stew, jerk chicken, and fried plantains and everything was very delicious- even better the next day!
MoreMore than expected! Fabulous flavors! Id go back just for the Ginger beer! But the food makes it a win win. And I just had the chicken wrap appetizer and 5 pc wings! The atmosphere is 39th and Main.
MoreOne of THE best restaurants in KC. I got the Jerk Chicken meal along with a cup of Island Spices homemade Ginger Beer! Absolutely delicious! Ill make sure to make a stop here whenever I am in KC again.
