At a distance of 6 km from Lucknow Junction, Indira Gandhi Planetarium is a planetarium situated at the Surajkund Park neighborhood of Lucknow. Located on the banks of the River Gomti, it is one of the interesting places to visit in Lucknow.The foundation stone of the Indira Gandhi Planetarium was laid in the year 1988 and has been opened to the public since 2003. The design of this planetarium is in the shape of Saturn with its five rings. Known worldwide for its uniqueness, the outstanding structure and design of the building attract a large number of tourists. Surrounded by a water pool with fountains, this 21-meter spherical building of the planetarium is specially designed to give an idea of crater formation on celestial bodies.Indira Gandhi Planetarium is also popularly known for the Taramandal Show that starts with the description of the Chandrayaan mission to the moon. The Taramandal show explains every point to visitors in a very common language. The show explains space and the stars structure to visitors. The planetarium organizes four shows in a day that starts at 1 PM, 2.30 PM, 4 PM, and 5 PM. If there are a hundred or more visitors coming into the group then they can organize an additional show between 10.30 AM to 12.15 PM. In the summer, Planetarium can organize an extra show at 6 PM.The planetarium also displays a beautiful gallery known as the Astronomy and Space Gallery which shows various Astronomy models and also gives information about the Indian space Missions. This completely air-conditioned planetarium has a state-of-the-art projection system, which gives special effects while projecting. Art projecting system, digital sound, and lift-ramp for handicapped persons are the other facilities available here. Disappointed, the projector doesnt work properly. Can barely see anything. The video is way to old and hasnt been updated to the recent technology.

The projectors for the show wasnt working well.A lot more can be done with the place to revive it.If you are tired and tortured by Lucknowss heat and want AC hall for an hour you can definitely go there and just relax just for Rs. 25.

Inside the show hall there is no discipline , some use there mobile continuously, some turn on there flash light for fun ... its too much annoying . Please maintain discipline .

It should improve now the people on the ticket counter themselves say that the picture quality is not good.

It was not a good experience visiting here as the projectors were not in working conditions

This place is just not worth it.The entry is only at 1pm, 2:10 pm, 3:20 pm and 4:30 pm. If you reach in between, you cannot enter. There is a 45 min show each. But projectors do not work at all. So there is only sound.All the models are there in a single small room. With just 6 models.Simply a waste of time. Science Center and zoo are far better.The staff is also not polite.Entry cost is Rs 25. Parking is Rs 10.

Its projector is not working properly show is nice but due to projector issue we didnt able to see properly other wise all good.

Good demonstration . However more care is to be taken for proper maintenance so that all portions are open for visitors.

The footage is mostly damaged. Yet would recommend to visit and take your children along. Worth giving it a try for rs25

The word PLANETARIUM today usually refers to an optical or digital projection instrument that shows upon the inner surface of a hemispherical dome onto which scenes of stars, planets, sun, moon, and, in most cases, additional astronomical effects can be made to appear. The term also refers to the room or a building in which the projector is housed. In 1913, an astronomer, Max Wolf of Heidelberg Observatory, discussed with Oskar Von Miller, founder of the Deutsches Museum, the possibility of a display which would show the motions of the sun, moon and planets within a dome of spherical curvature. In this device, light comes through hole in a darkened dome under which the audience sits. Miller proposed this project to the Zeiss Works but preliminary investigations were interrupted by World War I. Following the war, Walther Bauersfeld, Zeiss Chief Engineer proposed to construct a hemispherical dome painted white interior, and to place an optical projector in the center to show the stars, sun, moon and planets together with their motions as observed from the earth. Early in 1920, Bauersfeld began to work out the design details and technical calculations. Finally, after three and a half years of design and construction, the first Planetarium Projector, Zeiss model was unveiled at the Carl Zeiss factory in Jena, Germany in August, 1923.

Dont even think about going there. Projectors are not working. It was pitch black in the hall. We moved out in just 10 seconds after the show started. It was so bad. The staff was rude. They were shouting at us for leaving the hall early. This place will be closed in 2 months and renovation will be done.It was an extremely bad experience. 👎Big no from me.

Its basically a museum which contains prototype of satellites,radio ,tv, information reagrding universe especially our solar system and various space missions of india. They also show a 45 min movie which enhance our knowledge regarding space and various elements of it i.e coments ,sun ,galaxy. A must visit place for a person who is intrested in science or space. Just visited with my daughter, she is 7 years old and very excited to go there. But Im very disappointed because there 90% projectors are not working.. as we get to know at ticket counter, and it comes true.. and also one more thing that galary also not managed properly. In the planetarium no AC , we sit in the normal condition in this humid weather.. overall experience is not upto the level.. I just want to request the authorities to please take proper care of this place. Children get to learn very much from here...

Many projectors are not working . So you will hear the sound but not be able to see the image . Ticket counter person will inform you the same that many its very old show designed in 2004 so many projectors are not working.

if anyone is planning to visit it, you are simply going to waste your time.They have not maintained the place at all and the chairs were full of dust.I dont know why they are fooling everyone by running the shows because its of no use , the projector doesnt even work properly and 90% of the things are not even visible during the show.

Its basically a museum which contains prototype of satellites,radio ,tv, information reagrding universe especially our solar system and various space missions of india. They also show a 45 min movie which enhance our knowledge regarding space and various elements of it i.e coments ,sun ,galaxy. A must visit place for a person who is intrested in science or space.

Built nicely but maintained poorly. Most of the equipment are not working in the museum. For the show the seats are broken and the projector as well. Half of the things were not visible due to poor brightness. Would not recommend anyone to go.

Only the first show, which starts at 1pm will be in English. Be there 30mins before, since gate will be closed on time.Visual graphic need to be updated, its being outdated. Seating need to be repaired.

Not suggested to visit this place on this day coz the projecting lens is not working properly since due to covid it was closed for 2 yrs nearly. Mostly you could see the stars on the sky with commentaries. Govt should fund to make up the planetarium

Pros-Right on a main road, so you dont have to go looking for it.Nice staff.Great aesthetics. The saturn shaped building is interesting architecture.The fee for Indians is 25₹ per person.The skydome is cool and once the show starts, it almost feels like looking up at the night sky and seeing stars.The tech is nice.Cons-Only the first show of the day is in English. (If youre familiar with words like saurmandal, urjakumbh, akashganga- good for you. If not, get ready to learn new words!!)The place has seen better days. Its not that well maintained.The crowd is mostly composed of people with pre-teen kids. These kids dont like dark so much, so their parents keep flashing their mobile phones right onto the screen.Bonus- I am pretty sure the projector kept crashing inbetween the slides, but when I asked the personnel, they were clueless. I guess it has been going on for so long that thats the way they remember it now. The audio and visuals werent in proper sync, and animation was way off.The content presentation could be way better.They literally end the show on the big bang theory. Thats not the end, that is the beginning of any show!

This is very ordinary place. The show is worst 😭. ruined my 2 hrs here. Projector is not in proper working condition. Audio sound is much boring. Couldnt had wasted my time before like this. visit at your own risk. Nothing special to watch in gallery which is on ground floor. The only special thing here is the building of this auditorium.

Nice place , but lot of improvement needed. Need renovation and updation. They are showing same show which they were playing so many years back also. Video and audio quality also become so old. If you are free and for children time pass you can go otherwise nothing entertaining there , neither much knowledgeable thing there

It was an amazing experience. Looks Jupiter is seen on the front but is shaped like a Saturn with a ring. You can go with family, friends and children. If you come lucknow with children, then you should probably visit this planetarium.

The visit is limited to the Space show only, which is actually very enlightening and good. The institution is poorly maintained and very less time is allowed to observe the exhibits that are displayed in the outer waiting room. The behavior of the accessory staff is very poor and totally non co operative.

A good place for watching stars and galaxy. This planetarium have advance projection system for clear view. Kids are vary happy to watch them.

Nice scaled replicas of spacecraft and launchers exhibited . Building is shaped in form of planet with rings. Daily 4 shows in dome shaped sky theatre. Monday closed.

Good for:1. NothingWhy its not worth your time and money:1. Unfriendly staff.2. Obscure rules; example - No water bottles allowed, Cannot re-enter display zone after show, etc etc.3. Atrocious functional layout.4. Worst display and internal lightening.5. Models on display are highly inaccurate and shabby.6. Poor maintenance.7. Projector system is outdated. Planetariums the world over have moved to digital displays but this one seems to be stuck in a time warp.8. Audio is garbled and is barely legible.9. Poor scripting of show. The audience was constantly fidgeting and least interested in the haphazardly narrated program.10. Seating layout is exceedingly bad and if youre in the upper left of the perimeter, either strain your neck or better forget it.11. Overall... This would be the worst planetarium in the country by far based on the development extent and money spent in the name of education.
