India Gate Restaurant in Vancouver
Description
Privilege
The staff here is amazing and kind. I have some significant dietary restrictions, so my experience with the food may have been impacted by those. With that caveat, Id say the weak point is that the food is definitely in the top quartile of Indian restaurants Ive eaten at, but it isnt in my top 10. However, the location, the kind staff, and (if you ask for itthe view from the window seats all make it a lot of fun to go to. It is still my go-to for Indian food when Im in nearby.
MoreI have been coming here every two weeks for 14 years. The food is always excellent and they always make it super spicy for me by request. The prices are reasonable and the owner and his son are always very pleasent to deal with. I heard they are closing at the end of July and this is very upsetting. I hope they decide to reopen in a new location.-pw
MoreLoved the food here. I ordered extra hot Lamb rogan josh and it was delicious. The naan and rice along with it were good as well.Couple of improvements:1. Staff can be more hospitable. It was slightly depressing and the staff didnt smile or looked happy.2. Music. Music was mostly a tune. You can just play Indian songs for more authentic experience.
MoreThe least we expect when we order biriyani is that it would be made of basmati rice. If you dont have the right biriyani mix, you could buy biriyani essense and add a drop or two so that the aroma would remind of biriyani.Horrible food and careless service. Please dont do a business that you dont know . Food is not just a filling material for stomach. Please do justice to the name of your restaurant by providing authentic Indian food.
MoreLooking for Indian food when in Vancouver? You can consider this place. The methi and onion pakodas are best!We ordered chicken tikka masala and butter chicken along with garlic naan. I must say naan was delicious. We found tikka masala and butter chicken had same gravy but yes they differed in taste. To enjoy authentic Indian spice, just ask for Indian spicy (extra spice). Gulab jamun ordered were amazing too.Rates are quite reasonable too.Only minus point is ambience. I didnt like ambience of the restaurant neither my friends did. Rest all good.
MoreMy friend and I were sitting and wondering why it was so nicely decorated but still so empty. Then a rat ran between our feet in the middle of the meal and I lost my appetite and understood why it was so empty. We informed the server and then did not even get a discount or anything for sharing our table with the uninvited guest.
MoreGreat food and pleasant service. No fancy but the food makes up for it. Currys spuce level is always as ordered. Been in business for 41 years! Bathroom needs a reno.
MoreOne of the best curries Ive had outside of India and the UK (the UK has the biggest number of curry houses outside of India and make some of best curries in the world)! Made with amazing spice level at my request (lots of places dont believe me when I say I want it really hot but these guys did!and the vegie pakora were to die for! I am so happy Ive found a bloody amazing curry spot in dt Vancouver! Go here!
MoreLove the Food and the service from the staff. Try the samosas!
40 years of business is quite the achievement. That is just about the best thing I can say about this restaurant.Ordered their lunch special Tandoori chicken, I was given the choice of spiciness. Hence I requested Extra spicy. The lunch special comes with salad, papad, rice, roti and a choice of entree. The price of $12.95 which was a bit expensive for a lunch special but sometimes one has to pay more $ for Quality. But this was not the case, the salad was like someone threw up the dressing on. The dressing tasted awful. Moving on the main course the presentation made the food less appetizing. The tandoori chicken was super dry and to make it worse the way they made it spicy was by sprinkling chilli powder on top on a premade tandoori chicken. Very disappointing that they do not provide naan but roti. Also there was no service what so ever. No water refills and rude server who was asking to pay the bill. Why on the earth is it rated 3.8 on google and 3.5 on yelp is besides me? No I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
MoreHad to send back the fish pakora once for a hair in it then got a new one again with hair in it after that we can just imagine how many hairs would be in our butter chicken so no thank you we ran out. CAUTION!!! watch out for hairry food
MoreThis is the worst place i have ever been to for Indian food. The taste of food is so bad although the service was good. Better to order somewhere else rather than wasting your money here. Never gonna order anything from here ever again
MorePoor service and fairly uninteresting food. Definitely not going back. Waitress argued an incredibly simple error she had made, then, realizing how preposterous she was being, begrudgingly and dismissively made it seem like she was doing me a favor by amending the bill. Also, if you like your order of naan to arrive (I.e., be rememberedwhen your meal is almost over, this place is top notch.
MoreOver 40 years in business at this location. The father son team are very friendly and the food delicious. Father reminisce when his son use to crawl around the restaurant. Lunch specials daily. India Gate is also in the Entertainment Book.
MoreFood was actually good, although less quantity and I left hungry. What me really bothers is that while we were eating a mouse showed up. We let one of the waiters know and he tried to find it for 10 seconds, then he left without even an apology. After the second time the mouse came by we informed another waitress, but she didnt even care about it and left with the words that she will inform her manager. This is definitely a no-go!
MoreIt took a long time for ordering food. I understand because It was so busy.Taste was not bad. I have been to a few Indian restaurant before, but this restaurants the amount of curry was really small to be full.
MoreWent without any expectations, and got disappointed.. ordered chicken Biryani. Quantity was less for the price, there were no flavour of ghee, biryani spices, mint leaves and cilantro. And to my surprise there were green peas, almonds and dried coconut on top of it (which I have never seen in a biryani in India). Didnt like the taste at all. I went for a Friday lunch and I had to have a burger from a&w to satisfy my hunger after the biryani. Sorry to write this review. This is my personal opinion.
MoreThe food is great and they have plenty of vegan & vegetarian options. The servers are all very sweet! Always love coming here!
MoreDidn’t expect - but food was awesomeNaan/Paneer food was deliciousSamosa could need some makeoverService from Kind Punjabi Folks were very goodDefinitely a good eatery on Robson street
MoreTerrible experience. We went inside on a Saturday and there was only one server who was not enthusiastic at all. When he gave us the plates, there were crumbs on it and the glasses were dirty. The food was great though.
MoreI always get food from here when I visit from out of town, for the past 10 years. My Indian friend says that his mom makes better food (whos mom doesnt make better authentic foodbut I still enjoy the flavours. Its a special treat and well worth it. I hope you give them a try.
MoreNaan was very buttery and also crispy. Not what I expect from naan, so maybe a different style? The subjis were a bit salty. Also I must have had "white person spicy" because my food was surprisingly mild. The staff were friendly though, and the food was okay.
MoreFood is really fresh and yumm..very nice and super friendly people(sardar ji). Price is reasonable. Quantity of curry is bit less. Well I am not sure about Canada as we are visiting Vancouver from Australia. Definitely worth visiting this place if you wanna have some good indian food.
MoreAwesome Indian Restaurant! I love vegetarian menus!
We were looking for an Indian restaurant within walking distance of our hotel and chose this one. The atmosphere was very pleasant - tasteful lighting and decor. The staff gave quick, attentive service and the food was delicious! We had the pleasure of visiting with the restaurants owner who took time to share a bit of the history of the place and his family. We really enjoyed eating here!
MoreThe worst Indian food experience ever. I would not wish the service I had on anyone else. Chicken Biryani tasted like stir-fry. Food wasnt fresh and also the naan was burnt.
MoreOverpriced, food quality is very poor. Each item on their menu is unreasonably overpriced and quality of food is worse than any general indian take out. I ordered chicken tikka and it was a complete disappointment. I am giving it two stars only because the service was good and server was professional. Save some bucks and avoid this place.
MoreI had a week long trip in Vancouver trying some of most "poplular" food places daily. Then luckily on the last day we decided to just walk and find a random place to eat. We found India gate. The food was great and service was amazing as well. I can honestly say the food here was better than the so called "highest rated most popular" restaurants. The best food Ive had in Vancouver.
MoreThe food was good and so were the prices. The only thing that I was surprised was to see a gratuity already included to our cheque. It was just my mom and I and we always tip but I didnt expect for it to be already included. Other than that, great service, location and decent Indian food in the heart of Vancouver!
MoreWent here a little early to get some work done. Quiet, good food, wi-fi. Overall happy with the experience. Past visits with butter chicken have been excellent as well. Congrats on the 40 year track record. Cant believe Ive been going here for 15 years.
MoreWe saw this restaurant during our recent visit to Vancouver BC and decided to take a chance with dinner. We were pleasantly surprised with how good the food was. Chicken Tikka masala and Alu Palak were excellent. The staff were also very cordial and helpful. We definitely plan to eat here during our next visit to this charming city.
MoreInteresting place downtown. Lamb a bit dry, fish too much flour around it. Overall ok.
MoreMade resos but they didnt put a nice table on hold for us. Naan was burned, took about 30 mins and server forgot the drinks. Service was pretty lame, no apologies or smiles. Wouldnt go back again.
MoreWorst experience for ever as we were on a visit to Vancouver from Edmonton and ordered some curries for pickup and told the hotel name as well but some reckless staff picked up the phone and hung up saying order at different restaurant which was a worst experience. Then I called Salaam Bombay they were so nice and took the order right away. Would never recommend the restaurant to anyone.
MoreI like this place a lot. Food is great and the service is very friendly. My favorite is the Bhuna Chicken Curry. It is super crowded during lunch time so I recommend to visit just before or after. Although I dont have any way to verify, people told me that this is very close to original home made food so I highly recommend this restaurant.
MoreMy all time favourite is the butter chicken mild! Their papadom with chutney is also amazing!
MoreA wonderful hidden gem of a sit-down, white table cloth restaurant in a central downtown location off Granville for very reasonable prices. The owner often works there. Have been visiting the restaurant for years and the quality of food remains consistent.
MoreI would not say the service is bad here.. However 2 of our 3 greeter/servers were hating life. The other one was exceptionally nice and polite. The food is ok if you are really hungry but the flavors are just little mediocre. The restaurant was full of fruit flies and the wine was old. Im really just giving it two stars because of the nice older man that was re-filling our water. He was the best part of our meal.
MoreExcellent northern Indian food. Family owned and operated for the last 30 years. They have specials that change each day. No beef dishes (somewhat expected). The owner is almost always present and visits tables frequently to make sure you are happy. Not sure where the service complaints are coming from; Ive never had an issue with them. Ive also done office catering (downtownand they deliver on time with everything you need.
MoreOne of my favourite India Restaurants. I had not eaten Indian food much before dining at Indian Gate. Since my experience here, Indian food is now my most favourite cuisine. Thank you for giving me such a memorable experience. I now compare all Indian restaurants I eat at to your standard.
MoreFood - AveragePuri was not soft and crispy. probably cooked in bad oil.Sheekh kabab was average.Peas Pullao - cooked rice and put some boiled peas on top of it.No consistency with the parathas.Service - unfriendly. The staff looked very sad
MoreVery good Indian food; well priced and nice portions. One of the wait staff was kind of abrupt, but the others were just fine.
MoreMy wife and I love the food at India Gate. This is easily our favourite Indian restaurant in town and weve been going since 2006. Some of our favourites include the chicken biryani, lamb curry and the vindaloo. Give it a try for yourself.
MoreThe food is entirely adequate, and they have clearly labelled vegan options, with acceptable pricing for Robson. The restaurant doesnt seem to be that popular, hence there is always seating and possesses a relative calm.
MoreI can not believe that restaurant run by Panjabi people, the food I ate was very bad Indian food. Not only that I had to run to bathroom in half an hour due to stomach problem the moment I reached my hotel. It means the bacterial level in food was high. They need to keep the cleanliness.
MoreI dont know where the bad reviews about service and price come from - the prices are moderate and the service is polite and timely. The food is very good. I had the lunch special today and it was very good, genuine Indian food, and I am a fan of good Indian food. Lunch was about $10- a bargain! Great restaurant - thanks.
MoreGo to this place if you want to pay double the price of your food and get only half the quantity + bad service.I went there during lunch hours to grab some Indian food. i have been to many indian restaurants in Vancouver and Surrey but experience with this one was the worst. I went there with a friend and we decided to order butter chicken, naan and biryani. The server brought food and forgot to give plates. I politely asked him to get us plates and he ranted back at me telling me that I should have told them before if we were going to share the food. I dont understand - even if we were not going to share the food, arent we supposed to get plates to be able to even eat in? When we complained about him, he came back and started yelling again explaining me how "it is for our betterment" to not have plates. Extremely disappointed! The food is overpriced and it is half of the quantity in other restaurants. The naan were very dry and so hard to eat.will NEVER go back.
MoreIts Saturday evening, 9am and its me and my daughter. Shes having butter chicken and Im having chicken tandoori (hot), malagawtani soup with a mango lassi. There are only 2 other tables with customers which is nice for us. The food has always been really good here so hopefully it will be delicious now!
MoreI am really surprised to hear so much about "bad service" from this place. I AM a server and therefore am usually slightly intolerant to every small fail on a servers behalf... but the service here was great when I went, not to mention that the butter chicken was delish! I would bring my dads wife here - and shes sikh, so I am picky about what I would show her when it comes to indian cuisine in the city. My server was very accomodating to our table of 5, as well as polite and patient. Will definitely be returning here fairly often.
MoreI guess I would call myself a semi-regular customer, stopping in for lunch once in a while. I would go more but for a quick lunch, its a bit out of the way from where I am. Im surprised to see that previous review about bad service because I have experienced nothing but GREAT service whenever Ive gone in. I usually get the Buhna chicken, always fresh, hot and fast. No complaints.
