Independence Golf Club in Petersburg

Attended my niece’s wedding at the Independence Golf Club. The ceremony and photo session took place on their beautiful green lawns. The club house is classy and elegant, perfect for the wedding venues. The staff was wonderful.

**Par 3 - Bear course review.Very impressed! The greens were in great shape tea boxes were in good shape and the course is nicely laid out. Theres not a lot of par 3 courses around where you could really work on your iron game and I found it to be very enjoyable. Only one real issue with the par three course. My wife is a fairly new golfer and some of the obstacles in front of her t-box are just too far for her to carry so she really doesnt like playing the course. I forgot that you cant drive a card on par threes so please remember your push cart and if you dont have a pushcart at the clubhouse is more than welcome to lend you one. One of the consistent attributes of the par 3 course are they crowned greens. If youre not on the green your ball will run away, they shave the grass down very tight around the greens. Independence as a hole is an amazing facility. They have several different practice areas that are state-of-the-art. And they are an instructional facility, so theres plenty of areas to work on your game as well as very qualified instructors. The clubhouse is well appointed and large. I found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating.

My favorite course in Virginia! Very well maintained, beautiful scenery, forgiving but challenging so great for all levels, the staff goes above and beyond, fantastic ownership; I could go on forever with nothing but amazing things to say about Independence. Also, they offer much more then any course around; soccer & frisbee golf, zip lining, beautiful lakes to visit, live bands, something for everyone.

Megan and Kacie(hope I am spelling her name rightand their team gave me the best wedding I could have ever asked for. My wife and I have never experienced customer service on this level before. The level of service was excellent from start to finish. I can’t thank them enough!

Meticulously groomed and personable people. They also had a GREAT farmers market today... too many amazing booths to comment on each.... we got Soooooo much goodness!

The course is in fine shape and it is a very nice facility. That said, the good folks that work there dont seem to understand that they are in the hospitality business. I signed up for a tee time by phone. After arriving on the course, I was informed that I had been paired with a twosome. This is something I was not told when I called. Ordinarily I dont mind playing with somebody I dont know but its quite possible that they dont want to play with somebody they dont know. Anyway, the course didnt appear to be crowded at all. When I asked if I could play as a single, they said I wouldnt be able to tee off for another hour. I dont know about you but to me, if they are going to charge top dollar (and they do), then the consumer gets to have what they want.

We loved it! Played the Par 3 Bear Course.The course is great! Greens are exceptional.The entire club is GORGEOUS!

The course is amazing but let me tell you the 19th hole is where it’s at. Kristie at the bar is the reason we come back from out of state. Love this place!

This was a really fun golf course! Their grass is high quality, the food is great, and the employees were amazing! My favorite part was that one of the groundskeepers would drive around in their golf cart with their golden retriever greeting all the golfers! I highly recommend coming here and I hope to be back soon.

We had the best experience at Independence Golf Course! Everything was so beautiful and ran so smoothly. Megan was so helpful and always available during the planning process. We gave her free rein when it came to decoration & decor, we just let her know our vision and she made it happen. We also had our rehearsal dinner at IGC and it was so beautiful. We also rented the cottages the night before for our bridal parties and it was perfect and so cute - we had no complaints!! The honeymoon suite was also a great addition and so convenient! I highly recommend IGC to anyone in the Richmond, VA area!

Beautiful venue for wedding! Delicious Bar and grill there also! Shrimp Po boy was incredible with awesome French fries!

As a wedding photographer, Independence was an absolutely wonderful venue. So much of the wedding day was a smooth and a joyful occasion for the whole bridal party. The wedding coordinator, Megan, and all the staff were a large part of why we captured so many amazing photos. Everything was ready and set up ahead of time...there was no last minute dash for key shots (thank you!). Even when we pushed for some unusual accommodations Megan was always gracious and supportive of our photography choices. By the end of the evening we had captured a truly stunning wedding day.

Course is peaking in late summer and in great shape. Conditions are as good or better than any private course in this area. Expensive but you get what you pay for and keeps the crowds down.

Tees, fairways, rough (thick and deep), and greens were in superb shape and staff was friendly and helpful. Pricy though at $119 for a Sunday 3:10PM.

Nice driving range, chipping area and practice putting green. I havent played the course in several years but from what I can see it looks like it is in great shape.

Challenging 9 hole disc golf course on windy days. Great food and drinks from clubhouse. Cant wait for them to put in 9 more holes.

God bless you and the crews for working so hard behind the scenes to promote such a beautifully tranquil experience that begins before you even pull into the parking lot. A loving home away from home for so many and I am incredibly grateful.

Immaculate golf course in perfect shape. Polite and friendly staff. Greens roll pure and true. May be a bit overpriced considering other courses around Richmond that are of comparable quality and considerably cheaper. That being said, no complaints about the condition of the course. Hope play it again sometime

I had been hearing so many great things about this course and had to experience it for myself. Unfortunately it was after a big rain fall. The course rules were walking or push cart and cart path only for push carts. Everyone knows cart path only takes longer, well now lets add push cart-cart path only. It was told to me by one of the course attendants that it had something to do with COVID liability. Didnt quite understand than one. So five hours, sore feet and back later we completed the round. Needless to say I would have enjoyed my round a lot better if we had a cart and played cart path only. Beautiful layout and I must admit the course drained well considering the amount of rain the night before. I definitely will be back, surely not the day after it rains.

This course is absolutely fantastic. Its bit on the high side for price but well worth every penny.

Course conditions were very good. Even though the course appears to seeing a lot of play. Felt relatively safe regarding social distancing and procedures the course has initiated because if the pandemic. Ill go back!

Love this place. They got COVID all figured out. The golf course is pristine. Greens are fast. Bunkers well raked. Beer is cold and food is delicacies.

Nice set up golf course. Wide open but in each hole the narrow fairway diminish the likability of openness. Green is good to play. When we got there , it was cart path only day although it was not wet day. Obviously the place has a drainage problem. Unfortunately each tee box is far away from the cart stop, you have to walk and walk in addition to covering the distance of fairways. Well , when it is wet , be sure not to ride a cart but walk with a push cart. You will save a tremendous unneeded distance coverage. Also due to lacking of hole signage that we were all over to find for the next tee. Boy we were pooped out at the end. Golf course is big but there was no character we like to keep in memory. All in all in our experience, the place is Not worth $100 about $40ish at best. For $40ish there are several great courses nearby we enjoyed. I hope they improve some of above mentioned issues. Until then, we can enjoy elsewhere twice plays for the money!

Independence is rated as the #1 course locally but that comes with the notion that youre looking for a challenge.bit is not for novice golfers because who wants to pay $90 to suffer? It was my birthday and I always wanted to play there (bucket listI was 41 over but it was me, not the course. Work on your chipping, putting and irons!

Short course was all that we played but this place has look and feel of high end private club let but is a daily fee public facility. As impressive an entrance as you’ll find. Great logo! Lots going on besides golf here too, but short course had 3 cups on every hole - regulation, junior 8”, and footgolf. Very inclusive and amazing value at $25 incl cart for the Fazio built short course.

Course is absolutely amazing. Fastest greens around. But the price for a weekend round is so high an average player cant afford to play it. $110 for 18 holes in RVA is just not going to happen. Puts some deals on GolfNow or drop the rates to pre-ownership change and you will see a massive spike in play.

Course is in excellent shape, pace of play was excellent (3.5 hour round). Greens fast and true. For the higher than average public course price I expected slot and got it!

Beautiful course. Greens elevated so shots around the greens are a challenge. The greens are the only thing worth $85 fee. Food and staff, Haley, super nice. Fish and chips really good. Thx 4 a great day!

Very nice golf course, with a nice restaurant (newly openedand clubhouse. beautiful course. However, is extremely expensive, especially to hold an event there.

Beautiful course, extremely well maintained. Staff are top notch from the front desk, to starter, to 19th tee and car girl (it literally is a car). Nothing but smiles and over the top service. The course itself is challenging but so much fun even the double bogeys didnt hurt haha. Cart had GPS, radio & video, free range balls before the round... just a really great experience. We will play here again next time we are in Richmond.

Top of the line golf course. Fairways are in incredible shape. Not a lot of bunker play but they are placed in all the right spots to make the course tough. Greens were just done and are in good shape. Staff is over the top friendly and help make a great experience!

I have been here a couple times for meetings in large and small spaces. Food catering has always been good. Id say for meeting events, the spaces are adequate, but nothing special. Probably a good space for parties. Support staff is responsive. Havent played the course but it looks nice and well maintained.

Enjoyed a great evening at independence golf club for Thursday evening live music. Bring your own lawn chair, but enjoy the food, drinks, and games the club has out for everyone to enjoy.

I was very disappointing in the condition of the golf course, especial since I was charge full green fees. I have always wanted to play Independence and have always heard very good things about the course. When I checked in I could see that the greens were three different colors and when I asked about them I was told that the winter was very hard on them, but the greens roll true and all grass. All the greens, but one, had large patches of bare dirt and bumpy. In addition, there were large bare spots of dirt around the greens where is was dug up for new sod, but there was no sod, just dirt. Lastly, the golf cart display, that was suppose to provide yardage and information, was so dark it could not be used. I will not play there again....very disappointed.

We went this Thursday evening and children took over the dance floor doing cartwheels, going into the band area around equipment while the parents sat in the bar. Totally unsupervised. If you want an adult evening with dancing go somewhere else. Almost 8pm and the kids are still on dance floor. Average age of kids looked around 7 years old. Was wondering why school age kids that young was out partying on a school night.

Awesome course. Nice greens, nice fairways and very challenging. Club house is top notch and I enjoyed the bar and the food. I like the way the spread out the tee times too. Very enjoyable not to have too many in front or behind. Great place to play and would highly recommend to all!

Beautiful establishment! Our company Hott Shotz Photo Booth did a event at the independence Golf Club, and it was a great place to have an event. The staff are super friendly as well!

Staff is always great, party rooms are lovely. Food has been very good at the two parties Ive been to, as well. This place is quite huge, but very pretty inside. Id have a party here!

Absolutely beautiful! Went to a wedding here and the venue was gorgeous and the staff was so friendly and helpful. They were quick - they had the wedding service converted to the reception in 15 minutes. Also right now they’ve got lovely holiday decorations everywhere!

Had the $6 burger (discounted on Mondays), which was excellent. Bit slow finishing the order, especially considering the very light crowd. Quality of food and friendly service more than make up for this.

I love this golf course. One of the best kept secrets in Richmond. 18 hole course as well as a 9 hole par 3. Super nice staff and that makes it very easy and fun to play golf. And for kids they have an outstanding kids golf camp in the summer.

The course is in the best shape of any course in the area. The condition of the greens cannot be matched. Have had many excellent experiences both on the course and in Tavern 19. Service is great and the food is excellent.

My two sons played there May 13th and had a wonderful golf day. The course was in great shape and the people and facilities were top notch. Will definitely recommend that you go....

Had plans to play with a group that fell thru, so went to Independence. I pulled into the empty lot and went in to the pro shop. I asked if they could get me out, I could see there was no one on the tee box and only 2 guys on the range. He said we dont usually let singles go out. I said okay check and see if you have any tee times that arent a foursome. He said Ill make an exception and let you go out. I was just about ready to say never mind because of his attitude but paid my $60.00 dollars and went out. I wish I had left, the course was in horrible shape. No grass in the fairways, just mud and bare spots. I can see why the place was empty. I mean I understand its March but there shouldnt be bare spots everywhere and with the course in such horrible condition they should lower the rates. I wont be going back.
