Image of War - War Photography Museum - Museum in Zagreb, Croatia
Interesting and well-curated museum of photographs and stories from the 1991-1995 Croatian War of Independence. Despite that the museum is very small, I spent two full hours here. Staff was friendly, interesting and well-informed. It’s amazing to me that despite living just a few countries away during this time, I knew so little about what was going on then. I’m glad to have had the chance to see this museum, and highly recommend it.
Amazing museum, so happy we went. I was a bit unsure about taking my husband there as I am a photography enthusiast and he is not. I needn’t have worried: this museum can be enjoyed by anyone, except maybe young kids (some upsetting/graphic images).Modern, well laid out with image descriptions in several languages. Just note they don’t have a toilet. We spent around an hour there.
This museum is a beautiful collection of photos and videos. The current exhibit is the Croatian War of Independence. This museum really drives home the true casualties of war—innocent people. War photography is an important thing that gets its due in this museum.
Interesting pictures from the Yugoslavian War. Although it only showed one side (the Croatianof the war, it gave me a feeling of the war and the crazy things around it.
A remarkable museum. Incredible pictures depicting a gruesome horrifying war. It gives the war the necessary human face it deserves. Logically the museum tells the story from a croatian perspective, which can also be a little disturbing. Some croatians, especially in bosnia, also committed horrible war crimes.
Nice exposition although not that big. Neutrally Shows and tells the picture of people lives during the war.
Powerful images and two videos downstairs to complement the exhibit - one from the perspective of the photographers and another from the citizens who lived through it. The friendly woman at the front was also helpful / available to answer questions.
Definitely worth it to visit! Impressive photos and staff provided interesting information about the war
Amazing experience, a must do in ZagrebI was coming late so one of the founders of the museum just walked through with me and gave me a private explanation full of passion that really opened my mind. The exhibition itself is really strong and showing the different point of views in a great way!
Small museum but with great pictures that show the contrast between the situation in Croatia and the rest of the world in the 90s.
We were shocked by this touching, raw and beautiful museum! We LOVED the talent with which the Croatian independence war was captured! Must see!
Very impressive, modern museum that shows a moving, relatively balanced picture of the war. The photos are well organized and powerful. Overall very happy with this museum and I’m still haunted by some of the images. My only criticism is that I wish it was bigger, I could have spent all day there.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this museum while exploring Zagreb, it is one of the best I’ve been to in Europe. It is small but with a lot of valuable info and photos packed in, although not too many to cause the guest to be overwhelmed or unable to take it all in. The photos are quite touching and upsetting and show the reality that war inflicts on everyday people on each side. The woman working at the desk was also quite passionate about the museum and we had a nice discussion about the exhibit. Stay and watch the short videos and read the excerpts downstairs, as well :)
This was one of the most powerful and emotional museum exhibits we have seen in a very long time. Crushing stories, and stunning photos beautifully presented- superb
Such an amazing museum. Take your time and watch the videos downstairs. Truly life-changing.
A very thought-provoking place, almost each picture has a short written story behind it ...
Dont hesitate, dont be scared, its a must see museum and exhibition in Zagreb and even worth coming to this city for!
Amazing small museum, great for people interested in photography and history. Very emotional and intense exhibition, definitely a must in Zagreb
A very well made, small but powerful museum, with beautiful, strong & emotional photographs reminding us the horrors of war and how beautiful EU is nowadays. A very welcoming and lovely staff on top of that. Thank you!
A very moving exhibition- a must do for visitors of Zagreb. There is no deeper understanding of Croatia without an understanding of the war
A great curation of photographs from the war that happened in the 90s. The images are powerful, emotional and they really helped me get a glimpse of what the war was like for the soldiers and civilians. I highly recommend it if you are traveling through Zagreb and have time for 1 or 2 museums. Its a great way to learn about their history if you arent familiar.
Museum with a very strong message. I recommend to go, if you ready for it.
Breathtaking! Absolutely amazing for an emotional experience of the war, without any forced political agenda. This museum shows not the big leaders and politicians but the "little people", who suffered from the political war.
Very evocative photos about the war. Be aware going in that the exhibit takes a (self proclaimedsubjective stance on the portayal of the subject matter- more focusing on the croatian civilian point of view.
I had a couple of hours before I caught a train out of Zagreb and this was a perfect find. It’s amazing how coming into a museum like this stays with you. These photographs have so much meaning and it’s important to show the realities and atrocities of war. No one wins, and we should never forget the fallen. This will put things in perspective.
An museum worth visiting, no matter your relation to Croatia (local, expat, returned diaspora or tourist)Theres a nice number of photos from the different regions around Croatia during the conflict on display & listing the stories behind the images.I only wish they had a bigger premises, allowing them to display more photographs.
This museum has very well displayed photos of the experiences of war in Croatia and manages an honest approach to conflict by featuring artists from Croatia and Serbia. The place strikes a really good balance of not too many grisly photos but some highly evocative images. We were not overloaded or bombarded as can happen in museums. One floor had about 100 photographs with short descriptions and downstairs a few very engaging exhibits. We were privileged to be given the time, knowledge and care from the manager here which enhanced our experience tremendously. Other reviews suggest this is often the case. Highly recommend this place. It Is a heartbreaking but important to see exhibit that captures the idea that this war was about ordinary people and families.
First war photography museum, and its impressive: psychologic side of Croatian-Serbian Civil War was present in every pic. Good descriptions, well-organized spaces with many photographs in few rooms.Downstairs visitors can watch peoples witnesses and read pieces of story from survivor. There is also a desk where you can leave your comment and leave a message. Very interesting, I recommend it.
Experience of war through photographyVisiting the museum was, in a way, experiencing the feelings of war. It is as if you were there, living those terrible moments. Highly recomendable. Thanks to the girl who gave us many explanations.
Very moving and critical depiction of the war in Croatia during the nineties, focusing on the emotional and human impact of the war on all sides involved, and very much in contrast to portraying war as a glorious undertaking.A great mix of photography from Croatian, Serbian and international photographers that portray both the horror of war and find within that horror the human spirit of resilience and dignity.Very happy this museum has come into being and I wish it great success!
Extremely moving exhibition and the best place I’ve seen in Zagreb . The gallery assistant was wonderful and gave me lots of information about the war and discussed the exhibition with me afterwards . It’s only a small exhibition so if you’re in town you really have to go .
I came across this little museum by complete chance and even though the collection is small is hits you where it hurts. The imagery is impactful and strong. It’s one of those places that you cannot miss.
Very interesting exhibition, with great explanations of our host!it will take you 1h:It was sober, with many points of view of both sides.(And it exists a ticket reduction for 2 people!)
this place shows just a part of the war. I felt that any war kills many people and create nothing. I remember what I was doing during this war. the war happened really reacent.this place makes me think many things. I recommend many people to visit there.
What an eye opening and moving experience. For anyone looking to better understand the recent history and fight for independence of Croatia, Image of War is a must.
Its said a picture tells a thousand words and in this museum of war photography which we visited last week, that is so true. My husband, friends and I were so wrapped up in what we were looking at we didnt speak as we were viewing them. As we are all in our 60s we were aware of the war but not really that knowledgeable about the struggles suffered by people on a day to day basis; these were captured by the photos showing it all in great detail. The museum, is not huge, it doesnt need to be, it gave so much information and the young lady working there provided us with lots more and answered any questions we had. It is well worth a visit
Amazing exhibition. War photos certainly will not leave anyone apathetical
Proof that a great exhibition doesnt need a lot of room. A must see for everybody who is interested in (warphotography and/or the war in Croatia in general. It would be great if some more information about the course and reasons of the war would be displayed. But since the museum is so young still five stars for the great work they did so far.w
Impressive and eye-opening selection of photographies about the war in Croatia. Must-visit place in Zagreb!
Very good and highly recommendable exhibition. Prfessional photographies, each telling a story of its own.The staff is really friendly! Don’t miss out on it!
A very moving exhibit and one Id recommend. The fellow at the front desk really added to my experience by telling the story one of the photo journalists (Pavo Urbanwhose works are on display. I found the exhibit downstairs to be especially moving.
Do not miss this when you are in Zagreb. This museum is a moving representation of the forgotten beings of war; the people themselves. It offers a unique and unbiased timeline view of human nature through the lens of photography and anecdotes to create a beautiful, touching, and often surreal picture of the human soul in combat zones. It specifically does an extraordinary job of capturing all sides of the conflict, as well as those from most to least affected in vivid, amazing pictures and video.
Very good exhibition and awesome staff. They are there for you if you have any question and take their time to explain everything you want to know. The lower floor is also very well made with some Videos and personal stories on cards from people during that time.I can only recommend to visit this place, you can go even very late their open till 10 pm which i found awesome.
Remarkable war photography museum that showcases excellent photography. Anyone interested in the Yugoslav war will be truly impressed with unbiased selection of photographs which will leave an immense impact on the visitor. The photographs are tastefully presented and the guide is insightful and friendly. I suggest buying a poster or a T-Shirt because the portion of the proceeds go to support refugees and the victims of war.
Excellent and impartial exhibition of war photos on The War in Croatia 1991-1995. War seen through lenses of professional photographers cameras. Personal stories too. Not really recommended for families with small children because of explicit content. Adolescent age is fine.
Great photo exhibition that really shows the story of the Yugoslavian war. It gave me goose bumps while reading the personal stories attached to the pictures. Friendly, helpful staff who was glad to tell us more about Croatian history, you should definitely give this a visit!
One of the more moving museum/galleries I have been to. Cannot recommend enough. The photography is stellar, and the staff really informative and nice.
Amazing photos crucial for understanding Croatian history. Not only that, but every ticket you buy helps victims of war. A must-see.
Excellent museum with great photos. The only place we ve found in Croatia to understand the war context and impact. Highly recommend it.
Impressive collection of stunning war photos. Knowledgeable and friendly curators. Good price at 50 kn/ticket.
