Bright yellow bell tower with the largest rosary you will ever see hanging from this church. This church, originally built in 1548, was destroyed twice by earthquakes and the fountain inside the ruins is supposedly the largest in Central America. This area will come alive on weekends and at nighttime with vendors selling tostados and atul de elote, a hot sweet corn drink perfect for chilly walks in town.

It is definitely one of the most impressive religious structure of Antigua. It is strange to say that for such a small city but Antigua has so many religious buildinga such as churches, cathedrals and convents that it is so hard to pick one. Merced is just a few meters away from the iconic Santa Catalina Arc. In your visit not only you can enjoy the impressive colonial architecture of the church, but also you can taste fabulous food from street vendors located every day in front of the Merced. Do not forget to visit the adjacent cafeteria/restaurant also

This golden church with white filigree winding its way up the facade is the most stunning church Ive seen in my life. Beautiful inside and out, it also has ruins of an old monastery attached which are well worth the look. Its right in town so easy to find and only a few blocks from Parque Central on the other side of the Santa Catalina Arch.

Social mobility is a significant issue in Guatemala, especially for women and indigenous peoples. While hard work is not to be discounted, most Guatemalans enjoying a high social status have inherited their wealth. Those that have, continue to have. Those that lack, continue to lack. Upper-class Guatemalans enjoy a level of social and political power unrealized even by members of comparable classes in Europe and the USA. Thus it comes as no surprise that wealthy folks are able to park their Mercedes and large SUVs right in front of la Iglesia de la Merced. Indiginous folks selling basic but authentic and delicious food adjacent to the church seem to hold no animosity. Social Darwinism runs rampant. Just turn off your brain for a moment and enjoy the pretty views. To the commenter who posted that indiginous folks ("hawkers"sell food and other goods outside, but "it still felt safe:" Of course it feels safe. Indiginous Guatemalans have been beat down for centuries. They know their place. This whole town feels safer than anywhere Ive been in the USA.Why would brown people make you feel unsafe? In which country do most mass shootings and serial killings occur? What race of people is mostly responsible for the deaths of 70-85 million people during WWII? Like I said, turn off your brain for a moment and enjoy the pretty views...La movilidad social es un problema importante en Guatemala, especialmente para las mujeres y los pueblos indígenas.

Beautiful exterior with great detail and vibrance. Sit in the park out front and watch the crowds go by. At night and weekends, food vendors set up and offer an authentic cuisine experience. One of the few places not damaged by time or earthquakes. Incredible architecture. From the center, walk towards the arch, at the end, turn left and the church is right there, you cant miss it!

The church is one of the few without any apparent earthquake damage, and holds regular services. The views from the roof offer quite a different perspective of Antigua to the usual viewpoints, and you can see all three volcanoes on a clear day.

La Merced is a gorgeous church on the north side of Antigua that is painted a mustard yellow in colour and has incredibly intricate and impressive architecture. This church was definitely one of my favourites in Antigua and it is a fantastic place to take some photos. On the weekends local vendors set up shop around the church and sell street food, ice cream and colourful handicrafts. This church is a must-see when in Antigua!

This is not just an archtectually magnificent church building that has been restored, it is an active, functioning church central to the old city of Antigua. If you never see it, you will hear it. Its bell ring out through the day announcing every parochial thing. Vendors set up booths in the park grounds by it. They also let you tour part of the Monastery that was largely destroyed in an earthquake.

Nice looking church! The semana Santa procession starts here. So it gets super duper crowded with vendors, tourists, locals, tv crews during that week. Great food deals. We got tamales for Q5. And some fancy no-sting honey.

This is one of those must see places at Antigua, even if youre not a Catholic. There are food vendors outside in the churchs park, great place to taste Guatemalan typical cuisine. These vendors are mostly seasonal, and mostly operate in the afternoon and night so dont get disappointed if you dont find them.

La Merced is a half a block from the famed Arch in Antigua. The Church has an interior that represents much of the history of Antigua and Guatemala.During Semana Santa which is Good Friday the processions start out of La Merced Church at 4 in the morning and wonders through the streets of Antigua will sunrise. The church does not have specific tours however you can also walk the grounds of the church.

Beautiful. Living. If you can only see one Cathedral while in Antigua, this is it. If you can see a second...Las Capachinas. Then more... If you want to worship, too, stay a while & light a candle.
