Akureyrarflugvelli, 600 Akureyri, Iceland, Akureyri
Flight museum exploring history & development of Icelandic aviation with display of restored planes.
Its not huge but has a couple of aircraft that I havent seen anywhere else.
A fantastic aviation museum! If youre even slightly interested in aviation and history, you should check it out. Bigger than I expected, with beautifully restored aircraft and lovingly built displays. You can feel the passion and effort the team put into it! Absolutely wonderful! The historic airport "terminal" in the exhibition is also a nice little plane spotter spot! ;-)Reasonable entrance fees and friendly, knowledgable staff.Sadly, not accessible by the city busses, so its a bit of a walk if you dont have a car.
A great stop over while we waited for our car to be repaired
Very cool museum that really highlights the history of aviation in Iceland, being able to get in one of the planes really helps too. They are still working on adding some English translations to the exhibits but about 90% have them.
Small museum with well maintained aircraft. If you like aviation its well worth the visit. Its not crowded and you can walk around easely. You can park next to the entrance (free parking). The staff was very friendly and speaks fluent English. You can see this entire museum well within an hour, and depending on your rush even shorter. But I do recommend to take your time here
Easy walking from the Airport, some interesting exhibits with information about them in Icelandic and English languages
Great collection and the guide was very helpful and interesting.
Very well curated museum with many specimens of aircrafts from the 30s onwards. Some planes are being restored by volunteers and others are still used in acrobatic flights. You can enter inside a coastal guard Fokker and read about the history of aviation in Iceland. Worth a visit for aviation enthusiasts and children!
If youre into aviation and enjoy history, its definitely at must stop.
We got particularly lucky as we arrived in Akureyri on Saturday in the early afternoon, and the museum is only normally open from 1-4pm on Saturdays. Its important to note, however, that the museum can be viewed by appointment as well, so if youre arriving at another time, call ahead and I expect youll be welcomed in!The museum covers the entire history of flight in Iceland in great detail (in both Icelandic and Englishand there are dozens of different planes/helicopters to view up close, including a couple you can even walk through. The curator was just fantastic as well - she is extensively knowledgeable about the entire museum and came over to offer insights beyond what was on display; you could tell that shes passionate about preserving whats on display and wants visitors to enjoy themselves.I highly recommend heading here if youre in the area, you wont be disappointed.
Fantastic little stop in town - would absolutely recommend for anyone who enjoys aviation, vehicles or a really well curated exhibit. The curator was present when we visited on Saturday and she was informative, passionate and happy to share a wealth of knowledge with us. Loved it!
Wonderful museum with a lovely staff. You can walk under and inside the planes, not just around them. Our small, private event there was very enjoyable.
Excellent little museum with all of the icelandic aviation history condensed in one place. Really enjoyed being able to walk inside the F-27 and the DC-3
Its a great place to take kids and see all the different kinds of airplanes and teach the a bit about the history of flight in Iceland. Lots of great picture opportunities.
Very nice history
Cute, little museum with many different aircraft on display that played a role in the Icelandic Aviation History. Some aircraft are still maintained airworthy (or planned to become airworthy againand can also be visited from the inside. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. Looking forward to our next visit, when the newest aircraft display is delivered from a local airline :)
Lovely museum displaying many well-maintained aircraft. We learned a lot about Icelandic aviation history. The staff is very nice and knowledgeable. Overall we had a great time!
I made a special trip to Akureyri to visit this museum and it did not disappoint. As a self proclaimed AV Geek it was great to see the history of aviation in Iceland. A large variety of planes on display from small personal aircraft to large commercial aircraft. Notably a Fokker F27 (which you can walk throughand a DC-3. Many exhibits call out history of different planes and Icelandic aviation. A majority of the displays are in Icelandic but they have started to add in additional side sheets that are in English. If you have the time and are into aviation this is definitely worth the stop!
Superb collection in spotless condition. Laid out in purpose built hangar. Icelandair Douglas C47 (Military DC3is the star of the collection
A delightful museum which, despite its small size, punches well above its weight! Plenty of aircraft - all beautifully and lovingly restored. The DC3 parked outside is a highlight but you wont be disappointed. Highly recommended for anyone (but especially fellow avgeeks).
Not really as interesting as I thought it would be. Took me about 20.min to walk through the museum.Entrance fee is 1500kr for an adult.
Cool place. Many historical planes from long time ago. There are also many stories about what happened to the planes, history about some of the plane wrecks in Iceland. Information about the plane parts and stuff.
Very interesting, much to see. Not expensive.
The Aviation Museum is located at the airport. There are a lot of planes that are connected to Iceland or Icelandic airlines in some way. Interestingly, small planes (2-3 seatsare all fully functioning. Even those produced in 1937. The museum keeper tells us that he flies them periodically. One Cessna even belongs to him
Very nice, drop by if you are an aviation enthusiast
Small museum but with a very nice collection of aircrafts from various periods. Definietly recommendes if you have an hour to spare. Additional bonus, is right next to the local airport, so you might see some planes taking off or landing while in the museum.
We went out of season and we found the responsible there. He was glad to recieve us and he let us visit the museum during the morning. There is a lot of airplanes and neary all of them are ready to fly. You will find amazing models like Piper J-3 Cub, Pitts S-1XS, Fokker F27 and Douglas DC-3. All of them has amazing histories related with Icelandic aviation. You must visit this museum if you step Akurery!
Better than expected!! We went out of season and found the responsible there. We asked him if it was closed and he said: "yes. But you are welcome". We really appreciated the opportunity of visit. The Fokker F-27 is impressive, and the rest of the airplanes have its own history. The majority are still capable to fly!! I think it is a remarkable and different visit that anyone will enjoy; you dont need to be a freak of airspace!!
Great Air Museum. Entry 1500isk. Check opening times. Well worth a visit to see Fokker and C47. Very friendly staff.
very nice and interesting place
very nice museum, lots of unique planes with good explanations in english
Very nice!
Small but unique collection, great fun for anyone interested in aviation. Really friendly staff and the Fokker Friendship is open and fully fitted with seats, charts etc. which the children enjoyed
Lots of prop aircraft, a couple of good simulators for the kids and a RR jet engine. Takes about an hour to go round it all.
Nice, interesting things to see if you are an aviation enthusiast. Small but with ok information.
Tolles kleines Flugzeugmuseum was man sich unbedingt anschauen sollte. Sehr gepflegte Exponate.
Not much is in English, but its such a good collection for the amount of space they have that youll get a lot out of it anyway, even if you cant read Icelandic. You can walk aboard some of the aircraft and cockpit sections (not the cockpit itself though, of course). The cabin configuration of their centerpiece plane you can walk aboard was really unexpected, and there were some really big surprises for me in the history of Icelands airlines. You can figure out whats going on from the photos.
Family friendly with almost all exhibits in English as well as Icelandic.
Beautiful scenery. Great place to start exploring Iceland
Domestically Reykjavik airport
Very nice museum with beautiful pieces of aviation. Perfect place for enthusiasts !
Great and easygoing museum. Has a lounge to watch takeoffs and landings as well.
A great place to visit while in Akureyri. A show and tell about the history of flight and rescue in Iceland, wich all begun in Akureyri...
A great place to visit if you have a couple of hours to spend!
Definitely worth a visit
