Hugo's Frog Bar & Chop House in Des Plaines

Mamma mia! My wife and I had dinner here and this place made it a completely wonderful experience. The staff was warm and welcoming as well the waiter being extremely attentive and knowledgeable made sure we were comfortable and taken care of.

Excellent service, Halibut and Salmon Sorrel perfectly cooked and seasoned. Always have to get oysters as well. Well come back

The oysters here are delicious. My dirty martini with blue cheese olives were on point. The Brussel sprouts are to die for. Great environment, good service, good food. Great for a date night.

Awesome food and service! Steaks, seafood options are great with fun al la carte sides. Tables are tight.

Didn’t love this place. After having moved to Chicago recently, this restaurant was highly recommended but it was a miss for me. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation but weren’t seated until well after 15 minutes after. The server was inexperienced but very nice and tried her best. The food was decent but could have been better. Seemed like the crowd was mostly there to take photos. It seems like a casual restaurant trying to be fancy but it doesn’t work well for them. We had oysters, steak, and tuna. The tuna was a little fatty but steak was cooked well and oysters were decent. Best part was the warm bread served at first. Not likely to return.

Delicious. Perfect pace for a date or meet with friends. Or something formal. Appetizers are a chefs kiss. Staff is professional and sweet. Thank you for everything, will be coming back. Stephany gave us the BEST service. See you again Chicago.

100% will return. The frog legs - superb. Dinner was great. The whole dessert situation is a bit ridiculous. Its literally a quarter of a cake. The waiter told us it was tall, but failed to mention it was just as wide. Ended up going to waste because it was too big to even fit in our hotel fridge.

Very difficult to find a GOOD sea food place in Chicagoland. Had reservation but came in a bit earlier so went to the bar. Great specials, good drinks and everyone in the bar were having a great time. Friendly bartender.Reservation time came and we moved to our table, Excellent & Fresh sea food selection, server was very knowledgeable and friendly. We got, a dozen oysters (west vs east), they were FRESH and delicious. frog legs, they were well seasoned with garlic (good& the whole red snapper. The fish was done prefect. It was DELICIOUS. Will for sure be back. I saw people enjoying some good smelling steaks (I hear they were excellent). Prices are reasonable for the rush street area

Hugos is my absolute favorite spot in Downtown Chicago area. Fresh meats and fish always. I bring all of my out-of-town guest here. The desserts are amazing!

Great atmosphere if you eat in or outside, the over head heating system is wonderful. The staff were world class. The cocktails was very good. My wife and I were very pleased with our meal.

Happy hour with oysters and half price wine bottles

We booked on line for 7.30pm tonight for 3 people. Recv confirmation. Turned up door was locked, rang bell after a while someone wandered down half lifted the blind & walked away! No conversation, the place had chairs piled up total shambles! Rung bell again no answer recv a text message saying table was ready. Replied we’re outside couldn’t get in!!Total joke left went 4 mins up road too amazing Italian restaurant. Do not book total disaster!!

Amazing Chicago restaurant. The crabcake appetizer was phenomenal and probably the biggest one I’ve ever seen. The mahi was amazing and so were the brussels sprouts. All in all, a top notch dining experience.

Always good here. Went a few times during my last visit to Chicago for the dollar oysters during happy hour. Great deal! Had to have some frog legs also!

Had the whole Snapper fish with Greek herbs and olive oil. Fantastic. Calamari appetizer was overcooked. Friends had rare Porterhouse, 26 ounce. Cooked perfect also.

We went for our 9 year anniversary and it was perfect! From the moment we walked in the door the staff was extremely nice and welcoming. The service was great. Our food was amazing. Then, before we left they brought us an ice cream sundae to celebrate. Now that’s really above and beyond service!! We were so excited to go to Hugo’s and are so thrilled that it was a great time, we will definitely go back. I would recommend anyone go there for a special occasion or just good food

I walked in without a reservation and was seated quickly even though the restaurant was busy. I had a nice glass of wine with my dinner. The whole branzini on the menu was delicious. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive. I will recommend this place to others.

Really love the bar here. It has dark wood and mirrors which is an ambiance I personally really enjoy. There’s also a great Happy Hour with dollar oysters and half price bottles of wine.

Friday night, I sat at a high top near the bar. Baseball game was on so it was pretty crowded. They had someone playing the piano, which was a nice touch. My waitress made great recommendations. Food was almost perfect - I would say the white fish could’ve used more seasoning. Maybe it’s just me :The waitress saw that I barely touched it and took it off the bill. Overall great experience.

Loved the cozy diner vibe decor and the service was excellent! Food was great! Lemon butter frog leg was a delight! Their seafood and coffee are excellent choices if you come here

Our $60 halibut was overcooked and dry and served without anything else. Our friends by contrast, had a huge juicy whitefish with tons of mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. For $25! I complained to our server who did nothing but say, “I’ll let the chef know”. We did not enjoy our meal.We won’t be back.

The food & atmosphere was great. The bartender that has been there for 22 years…not so great. We saw him be rude to many customers and when it was time to collect the check, he reached over so quickly & made remarks of the tip. My husband and I work in the tipping industry so understand how much we should give for our service. Mr. Man, not impressed. You were so rude & the least personable. Maybe time to retire. It was enjoyable but it could’ve been a lot more enjoyable with pleasant service.

First time trying Hugos and will definitely be back. Great service starting from the hostess to our waiter. Made a reservation and even if I couldnt select outdoor seating they accommodated my family and I. I was also celebrating my birthday and they brought out a dessert on the house. Everything we got was delicious!

Oysters and Filet were excellent. The Shrimp was very good. The Lobster tail was just average. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just not as fresh as the oysters and shrimp. The service was slow but hospitable. The drinks were also very good.

Very nice Restaurant in downtown. Food was amazing. Nice selection of wines, beer and cocktails. Service was amazing! I had salmon, a side of mushrooms and a side of creamy rice. One side is enough for 2.

Went here three times in four days. Twice for the bar, once for dinner. The two bartenders were just awesome and very friendly. I wish Id gotten their names so I could give a proper shout-out. For our dinner (5 of us), the food was great, as was our server. Ill def go here next time Im in Chicago.

$1.00 oysters and 1/2 price bottles of wine. Everything was awesome! Eat at the bar! Chicken thighs were amazing, crab cake fabulous! Everything was so good!

Terrible service. Waited 30 minutes for our drinks and an hour for food. $68 steak that looked like a burnt hamburger. Literally came as shown in picture. Disappointing to say the least.

Dinner was fantastic. We started with a variety of appetizers; frog legs (a must have), lobster roll and crab cake. They have a variety of fish, whole and cut fish (ask to bring out the platter of fish), steaks, chicken. Meals are served with soup or salad. Service was great along with the drinks.

Our waiter, Brandon, was excellent. Good personality, funny, attentive. The manager, middle aged gentleman, was outstanding! The food was prepared perfectly. The sauce with the tuna.... heaven in my mouth! Such a perfect way to start our weekend getaway from kids, work and school.

Definitely not what it used to be. I know times are changing and challenging for restaurants, but my last couple visits have felt like visiting an empty shell of what used to be. The food used to be exceptional in my opinion. Unfortunately the food quality has dipped dramatically. Several bad mussels, hard/stale/cold frites, inedible grisly/crunchy/burnt burgers, and a server assistant breathing/leaning right into our faces when setting out water- cmon. You guys should be better, you were better- please take feedback and polish up. We miss you. 😢

Theyve done some renovating since the last time I was in and during that time decided to add a few more tables making it a little tight and a lot closer together - honestly I could have eaten off the tables next to me and I felt like I was in their conversations.The service was friendly, but after we got our drinks, the waiter disappeared for 20 minutes which made us REALLY hungry. So we ordered the Tuna Ribbons - very good - highly recommend this version of tuna tartar. While the non-fish options are few and far between, they do make a VERY lovely filet mignon. The desserts are ridiculously big - sharable for 4 people easily.Watch out for the waiter with the twin brother that works there - hell try to get invited back to your place to be your vacation bull.

I have to edit this review and I really regret adding this to the list of places I will never go again but I was out for business and had one glass of wine before trying to walk in with two clients for dinner around 9:40 tonight and the hostess deduced I was “too drunk” which really upset my clients and set off a whole chain of events. I 100% was not drunk for the record - but even though they tried taking to the manager they stuck with the initial judgement of the Gibson’s hostess. I hope she feels good about that because none of us or anyone else we associate with will ever return again.As someone that had come many times and recommended this place to countless people I’m super offended by how I was treated in front of people that were work colleagues and clients. It was unacceptable and rude.Hugo’s is a must for me anytime I go to Chicago. Something on the menu for everyone. The service is always fantastic. failed to make a reservation this time and ended up getting a high too quickly in the bar area. There was a live pianist that we enjoyed along some great mussels and fish dishes. The salmon was super standout to me and I’ve never had whitefish prepared like this- so moist and fresh. Even though we skipped on the frog legs this visit everything was great. Highly recommend. I

This review is based on our visit to Hugos yesterday evening. Its summertime and the idea of getting some oysters and a drink could not be cast aside for long(especially if you are walking past the patio arrangements this place has!). It was our seasons first oyster and lobster roll and they were great! The oyster options are limited but you get the good stuff! Apart from the lobster roll(sbeing great, it was presented in an interesting way (see pic). What else? A glass of white and a goose island 312 and a great time. My wife and I will soon find ourselves frequenting this neighborhood charm throughout this summer.

Everything we ordered was perfectly cooked! It was fresh and packed with flavor. Definitely going back and service was top notch 👌 Dont skip on the king crab or escargo youll regret it!

Good food. Nothing stands out. The bisque didn’t have any lobster. That’s always disappointing. Overpriced. No real COVID distancing, if that’s important to you. It’s a place you can say you’ve visited but the return may not necessarily happen.

How can a frog bar not have frog legs? Other than that everything we ordered was super delicious. Crab cakes especially. Everything is cooked very quickly and the ingredients tasted fresh. The waitress was very friendly. She was very sorry about the crab legs. The place is very popular, especially during the holidays, so they suggest making reservations. We didn’t, so we sat at the bar table. One of the most unusual experiences in this spot was that the employees are actually leading you to the restroom and even open the door. We never encountered such service before in any of the States. Overall, it was a fabulous experience, we’ll be back for frog legs.

How could you not love Hugos? Is it pricey? sure. However once in awhile its nice to enjoy a Chicago classic and when you combine excellent food and service Hugos is untouchable.P.S. dont forget the dessert 😉

Had the frog legs, seared tuna, and the filet. Everything was cooked to perfection. Also had a few mixed drinks the box car, and a chocolate martini. Staff was fantastic. I have fallen for Chicago, their customer service skills are impeccable. Our server was Brenden, but Im sure who ever you get you will receive the same five star service we received. Thank you all for making our 20th anniversary something we will never forget.

Not my first time at this location or any Gibsons Restaurant for that matter, but wanted to add a 5-star to this classic Chicago joint. Environment, service, and food are absolutely exceptional! Tasted many of the menu items over time and have so much more to try. Definitely a go-to type of spot that you can go to daily and a place that makes you feel at home.

Both interior design and food are very classic American. Oyster is fresh and tasty. Burger is well made, meat is cooked as what I asked for medium rare. Fish dishes are not bad too, with good amount. This place can get very crowded in weekdays night and weekends.

I ended up eating from the Gibsons menu in Hugos. Not nearly the same vibe. Still the food and service were tops. My steak was done perfectly. Great service too.

Amazing date night, it was late and we could not find good dining. I am glad we came here. They also cater to Gluten sensitivity. Best server and best experience . Food was amazing

Place is nice, not sure if its as cozy as I expected it to be. Food is good. Oysters are incredible! Service is a little Americanized. You feel like "What do you want, everything ok?, what else before the bill". Not sure if Id come back or recommend it.

Atmosphere has a cool vibe, but is also comfortable and inviting. THE FOOD IS AMAZING!! The bartenders were super and suggested the perfect drinks! We will definitely be back for more

We visited for the Sunday Oyster Happy Hour. It was unbelievable! 5 different varietals of oysters, $1 each, and all the white wines by the glass are half-off. The service was great, with a friendly and attentive staff. Good bread and butter too. This is definitely the best $1 oyster deal Ive encountered.
