African-American culture museum with art exhibits, film screenings & educational programs.
HMAC is one of the smaller museums in the city, but it still provides 2 floors of content. The museum is currently free with the option of donations. Both floors contain exhibitions, but the 2nd floor space allows room for large size works to be observed from a distance. The first floor also contains a gift shop that contains art for sale, African apparel, books, and more. In addition, theres an elevator on site to accommodate those in need.HMAC is a credible space to view contemporary African American art, get informed on current social/political issues in the black community, and get exposed to provocative visuals. Whether visiting during lunch or spending extended time interacting with the art, its worth the visit.I recommend visiting during a day of clear skies. The interior lighting is modest, and the natural light from the museums windows can be a fairly gloomy on a cloudy day.
I Check the museum’s website this morning it shows opening at 11:00. I drove 30 minutes to arrive at the museum and it is closed. I called the phone number and got a voicemail indicating the museum open at 11:00. I just checked the website now it indicates the museum is temporarily closed. This should have been updated yesterday. I am very disappointed I waited my time.
Excellent, small friendly/family vibe. Looking forward to returning and finding ways to support
This was an awesome experience! There was a $5 donation asked of us. The art was awesome and the history behind it was awesome. There was a small gift shop with items made solely from African Americans.
Amazing!! Went to support a classmate but will absolutely be back. Love the building and the artistic space. Will definitely be back soon.
Great structure and intelligent layout of the art exhibit (sdisplayed in there. The customer service was top notch and friendly as well. Visiting the museum was a great experience.
Nice museum. I had a chance to hear Artist & Educator Eddier FiLer discuss his paintings in the upstairs gallery.
Wonderful showcase of art by African American artist.
Just the energy will ignite you.Love this place!!!Black excellence!
This is a beautiful museum for the culture. The staff was very helpful and the artist was downstairs available for any questions. No admission fee, just donations. Will be returning next time I visit H-town. Peace and power 🤎✊🏾
They showcased Dallas artist David Jeremiah pieces along with a few other pieces.
The museum was beautiful for what it was, it was more of a gallery than a museum. What was on display was beautifully orchestrated and told a brief story from the viewpoint of the selected artist. The gift shop had some one of a kind items that I was more than happy to pay for. Very much needed for the culture, keep up the great work!
I sung here for Juneteenth!! Awesome environment very open to the public!!!! Diversity was amazing to see must go see!!
I wish that I was able to visit. I came today to visit, just to find out that they are closed for a special event. This is the first time in several years I was off of work during their business hours. So I’m definitely disappointed. Doesn’t look like I’ll be able to experience it. I travelled over 50 minutes just to come. I would definitely advise calling ahead for make sure that they are actually open during business hours. Can’t trust times online. But I appreciate the concept in the city.
What does the Caribbean have to do with Black American culture??? You would never see this in the Caribbean talking about American black culture in their museums… this is plain disrespectful
I didnt get the experience of Black excellence coming in the front door. The host was definitely below average in greeting. A bit of an attitude. Other than that it can be worth a visit.
Great pieces but expected more art but its a little lacking. Its definitely worth checking out though.
Great variety of exhibitions. Lots to see around Houston music & culture, great contemporary art, futuristic Lego piece, and all rooted in history. Worth a visit, and I learned a lot.
The Knowledge You Receive may not Always Be..What Youre Seeking If At All! THE KNOWLEDGE I Received Was Well Worth It.
I really enjoyed the exhibits, friendly and welcoming staff.
The GREATEST Museum of All Times is this REAL GEM 💎 for Educational purposes and enlightening OUR YOUTH Of Today!!!
This great opportunity to visit a superbly relevant piece of African American history is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Take your offsprings so that they can witness OUR RICH HERITAGE Of Melanin!!!
Thank you Ms. Arsenal for the delightful presentation of the museum the exhibits were amazing!!!
The museum is wonderful and I was able to end the day with a new piece of art 🏁RIP x DJ SCREW x HOU 🙏🏾
Definitely a dope experience!! 💯💪🏿 #BlackExcellence ✊🏿✊🏿
Visited this meseum with my family. Its a nice one to visit to see our history and heritage.
Nice and cozy place and the staff were friendly! Donations are optional, I think we should give a little more to support and grow these types of Black businesses. They are educational and portray Blacks in a positive manner.
Very nice to know that there is a museum that spotlights the African American Culture. There is no entrance fee. Currently open only on Friday and Saturday.
My daughter and I visited the Museum during my visit from Chicago. I love the art and collections. Although it was free admissions, we made a donation. We need museums such as this that displays our cultural.
This was an awesome an amazing experience. To visit while in town for the weekend from Ohio was on our list of to-do. We didn’t have a reservation but were welcomed in and able to tour. Which we were grateful for!!
Loved the artwork and staff. My husband and I hope to bring our children very soon so they can have the wonderful experience as well.
We tried visiting this museum on Saturday, February 13th, at around 1:45 pm. We scheduled an appointment as requested on the museum website. However when we got to the museum, it looked like it was closed. There was only one car in the parking lot that looked like it was abandoned. We tried calling to see if any staff were there, but we got no answer. I saw that there was a review on here from just 2 weeks ago, so I assumed we would be able to visit the museum as planned. Im not really sure if they were just closed due to the weather because there was a winter storm warning for later in the weekend or if they were closed due to covid. But either way, this should have been posted on their website or on their answering machine/service if they have one. I was looking forward to visiting. And will definitely change my review if we get the chance to visit and have a better experience.
I enjoyed my visit! There were many thought-provoking works that reflect past and current social issues. Non-flash photos are permitted. Amid the Covid19 pandemic, face masks and temperature checks are required upon entry. Prospective visitors must register on the website in advance. Parking and general entry are free; however, donations are accepted.
I visited this museum this past Saturday afternoon while I was visiting the Houston area. Because of the COVID-19 the museum is operating on limited capacity, and visits are by appointments only. Which I was unaware of when I dropped in, but the young lady that was working was super friendly and helpful. She informed me that they wasnt busy and if I could go online with my cellphone....that she could get me in for the 3pm appointment. The museum itself is very beautiful and not to large, so all I needed was maybe a hour. All the artwork was very nice and Im sure that I would visit them again to see any new pieces. Their elevator was not working during my visit, and since it was 2 floors....its not currently handicapped accessible.Note.....The museum has its own parking lot on the side, so there is no issues with parking.
I loved this place. It provides great artwork and even saw a few pieces from John Biggers. Staff is great and friendly. I purchased a few shirts and left a donation as there is not an entrance fee.
The only privately funded museum. Come see and get inspired.
There were two exhibits when I visited. The Robert Hodge one was amazing! So glad I caught it on the last day. Highly recommend to check out his work. The Ann ‘Sole Sister’ Johnson exhibit was also amazing!
Great place, nice staff, I was slightly disappointed that there were only two exhibits. Ive been traveling to differents states/cities checking out African American museums exploring my heritage. I drove 10 hours to get to Houston. I was hoping that this museum would be on par with the Griot (St.louisor the Odell S. Williams (baton rouge). Especially since I discovered that Houston is about 25% black. Anyway, I will try to donate, they seem to lack funding.
Absolutely, AMAZING!!! There were 3 different displays plus a gift shop with more artwork, books, and other items for sale. My only suggestion is to have the title available of displayed art for sale. I wouldve made a purchase, but no one could tell me the name. 😞 I look forward to returning for the next exhibit and seminar. Its a perfect venue for community forums! 🙌🏾🤸🏾♀️
#Metro need to have more museum district stops#HMAA need more art, please donate captivating items showcasing the beauty of African art with American swag#can be 5+🌟 please!!
Beautiful representation of all forms of black art work .
I was expecting more for Black History Month. It toke my group over an hour to get to the "museum". The lady at the front desk was very unfriendly almost rude. It toke us 30 minutes and they wanted a $50 "donation" for a private tour which wasnt private at all. The young man was helpful and the art was nice. Not sure if Id return in that capacity again.
stopped in while visiting Houston and was definitely impressed. it’s a small museum, with a little parking lot out back, build into some kind of an old building with exquisite and unique architecture. I’d say looking through everything shouldn’t take much longer than an hour or so. but an hour well spent! the Afro-futurism exhibit available when I visited was enchanting, but all of the exhibits just displayed such talent and skill going into pieces with haunting commentary or emotive expressions of the hope and dreams of a community. the museum doesn’t charge necessarily for entry, but asks a $5 donation per person, and for sign-ins, and that donation is more than deserved. my only complaint is that the building itself wasn’t easy to navigate for those with disabilities, but all things considered it was a worthwhile visit- I certainly am taking home some names of artists I’d love to see more from!
Houstons Museum of African American Culture is the sister institution to the African American Library, located in the historic Freedmans Town. The Museum boasts a beautifully renovated facility that houses two floors of gallery space and classrooms. Socially engaged exhibitions bring to the fore relevant conversations about African American history and politics, with a keen eye on Houstons specific African American heritage. Come to view the featured Houston artists in the Bert Long Gallery or to participate in the many offerings the museum hosts. Dont forget to sign up for the newsletter and donate to support the institution as much of its funding is dependent on community support.
Very accommodating. I LOVED THE LOVE ROOM!!! ...and my job bought me this lovely walking stick (I added a lil fabric, to lend a touch of me to it)
Awesome 2 story gallery with beautiful work by African American artist. The museum is completely free!
The exhibit was amazing but it was disappointingly small. It only took 30 minutes to take everything in, including the video presentations More time driving than culture. The quality is there but it definitely needs to expand. The staff was professional and helpful There is nothing charged, only a reasonable recommended donation of $5 which I happily paid.
Wonderful cultural place to visit. Enjoyed the exhibit for Aesha Lee. Parking was easy on street surrounding museum. Staff was friendly and helpful with questions.
Sadly, it was smaller than expected and showcases more art than artifacts. I will sipport it of course but hope it will expand its focus
An overlooked gem in the city. Host to many great local events, art exhibits and artist lectures, as well as community engagements. The staff are very friendly amd helpful. Perfect place to take a small group of art enthusiasts, young and older. We took our senior citizen group. There is an elevator for those who physically challenged.
