Look, we all know this pandemic is killing the vibes..NOT HERE!!!!!Austins ONLY Great Place TO BE!!The Music is BANGING!The Drink specials are AWESOME!The Staff are CONSIDERATE and GENUINELY Friendly!!....dont worry it doesnt get mundane AT ALL!!5 STARS x 2!!!!
Cool spot. Especially to go listen to some good house music on friday and Saturday nights.
Cool place. Fusion menu was fun, good food. Bartender was very nice and helpful with the menu.
The taste of the food fell flat on the pallet. I was not taken to flavor town here.
It is a very nice and trendy location. They are in the process of making changes.
Great food, drinks and experience. Excited to see where these guys go.
The fried wontons are very good and probably the best example of asian and southern fusion although theyre pretty greasy. The fry definitely soaks up a lot of grease, its not a light tempura fry by any means. The tom kha gai is also pretty good, although I didnt really taste the duck. I tasted more mushroom flavor than anything. My shrimp stir fry was good as well. The shrimp had a nice sear, but I think the sauce made it a little soggy. The sauce was a lot pretty aggressive. Same with the broccoli. Maybe go a little easier on the sauce. Still good nonetheless though.
If I could recommend any place to eat in Austin, it’d be Tanukisan. My husband and I found them via Instagram and got a reservation for their chef’s table. It was fun, intimate, and so delicious. We were treated to 5 plates of whatever Chef Adam and Chef Leichliter wanted to serve. It was such a delight to the senses, and the Chefs were so giving of their time and very engaging. Before starting, we had a chance to look at their standard menu, which was incredibly punny as well as appetising. They cover vegan, vegetarian, and meat lovers with great pricing, an excellent happy hour menu, and a fun and artistic atmosphere. I highly recommend the Yuki No Bosha Junmai Ginjo, “Cabin in the Snow". The best sake I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to make it back in to visit.
Ramen was underwhelming, brisket spring rolls lack flavor, service was excellent, hire a cook or change the recipe. Atmosphere is great for drinks.
Great food and cocktails in a cool space.
Should’ve taken the fact that the place was empty on a Saturday night as a sign. The cocktails are the only thing that was decent here. Brisket spring rolls are interesting but the flavors still weren’t extraordinary. Fried rice had incredibly too much ginger, an overwhelming amount. The ramen noodles with Parmesan cheese were nauseating and a poor choice. The pork belly was very salty and overpowered the flavors of the dish. Overall not a single person in my party of 8 enjoyed their dish. For how empty the place was and how bad the food was I’m questioning if most of the other reviews here are fake.Edit: An hour later and one of the people in my party is throwing up repeatedly with food poisoning, fantastic experience.
Tanuki is a unique and vibrant addition to the Austin food scene! I can’t believe it took me so long to come check it out. I’ve been here for happy hour, and also for the Chef’s Table which was better than anticipated since we left everything up to the Chef, but I loved every dish. The food was INCREDIBLE. I’m in love with the shrimp dumplings (Texas Gulf Shrimp Shumai), and also the Shiitake Mushrooms are a must-have and come with an incredible sauce. Can’t forget about the scallops that were cooked to perfection... I’m still dreaming of those! The whole experience was wow-worthy and definitely made me want to come back. I was impressed, and will continue to keep Tanuki on my list as one of my favorite restaurants in Austin! Knowledgeable and helpful wait staff as well. Highly recommend.
This is my second time here and both times have been really enjoyable. The food menu changes with seasons, but is really creative without being kitschy or trying too hard. The brisket tacos are really good, though they have changed a bit since the first time, which I enjoyed more. The food overall is excellent and it manages to straddle some different lines in terms of cuisine without being annoying or really in your face about it. I hope that this place does good business and can stay open in a quickly changing downtown food scene.
The food was amazing, the decor was awesome, and the music was perfect. I will definitely be back.
Wonderful! Every dish is so unique. We loved the shrimp shumaii and quail. Fried pork pm top of fried rice sent us over the moon!
Had a yummy Asian style double burger to go for lunch. Im so stuffed.
Have dinner here and thank me later. Im not kidding the food is amazing. The Hamachi and the Bay scallops will rock you. This place will make you look cool too. Oh and go grab a drink and dance upstairs at the Summit after.
Food will blow your mind. Hamachi and scallops are a highlight! Very unique and fun experience, art and vibe. Fun and great service. If you frequent the Austin food scene and have not been here yet, you are missing out.
The food and service were absolutely top notch. The menu has plenty of gluten free#1eeq3333|e3w⁴33wv
My husband and I visited yesterday for the first time. We shared the Tom Kha Gai soup (holy moly the roast duck in there was fantastic!and I had the Chicken Stir Fry. Everything tasted so good and the service was impeccable. Well be back for sure!
Mongolian beef was excellent
Stopped in on a Thursday night around 6:30. No wait and seated right away. We ordered brisket spring rolls, crunchy wontons made with bison, and pork belly stir fry. Delicious, well prepared fusion foods! Look forward to trying other dishes and grabbing dessert next time.
This place is great manga/kungfu lovers unite in dis bish
Delicious! Presented beautifully. Loved the atmosphere!
When we walked in, the place was virtually empty on a Monday night. Bad sign? The ambience was great. The cocktails were good. The food... Not so much. Very salty. Not a lot of flavors. Definitely would not be returning.
Tried the greem tea. It was nice. Frendly bartenders
It was decent but a little underwhelming. With the name I was expecting Japanese not Asian American fusion. Lunch menu felt a little hodgepodge. I would have been really excited if the burger was a bogogi burger but it sounded like just a burger with kimchi so passed. Brisket egg rolls were pretty good although fairly one dimensional since the brisket overwhelmed. One person in our party loved the Mongolian beef. Another seemed not too happy with the crispy chicken sandwich and dismembered it. I had the sweet and sour shrimp which was pretty good but different is a slightly unsatisfying way. I would like to come back and try the tom kha and chicken stir fry. The plating was fabulous and I really appreciate a place that presents food well. I’m somewhat sensitive to smell and the building had a lingering construction site odor that I hope goes away with time. All in all I would have it a 3.7 if I could. Very close to a 4+ but wasn’t quite there for me today.
Nice workday lunch options
The "Udon-even-Know Cashew Noodles" is one of the greatest noodle dishes I have EVER had. Completely addicted and cant wait to eat it again! Great service and great atmosphere.
My boyfriend LOVES Asian food. I was excited to surprise him with a restaurant pick for our date night. (I dont live in Austin so he usually picks the place. I read some decent reviews about this restaurant on Yelp so I picked this restaurant. The hostess was friendly, and we were seated quickly. There were other patrons in the restaurant, but I would not consider it busy at the time we visited. We started by ordering drinks: Strawberry Fields and Oaxaca Nightcap. I anticipated my drink, Strawberry Fields, to be a little more on the sweeter side but it wasnt. It was not bad...just different. I did take a sip of my boyfriends drink, the Oaxaca Nightcap, and it had a very smoky taste. On to the appetizers! We ordered the shishito peppers and the brisket spring rolls. I absolutely love shishito peppers! I was disappointed with two things: 1the flavoring used was a thinner sauce (soy?so it didnt stick to the peppers. The sauce was delicious, but unfortunately, it was all at the bottom of the bowl. 2The dipping sauce was a mustard, which did nothing to enhance the flavor of the peppers. It was not to our liking so we did without.I was not able to try the spring rolls since im allergic to shellfish. ( The same grease is used to fry the foods. )I read the udon noodles are delicious so thats what I wanted to eat. However, the restaurant was out of noodles and soup! Since I have a shellfish allergy, that left me with about two options. Needless to say, I paid the bill and we ate elsewhere.
Great happy hour specials. Fun envonment!
Relaxed environment with great staff, good eats 👍
Great food and nice atmosphere
Cocktails were tasty and unique! The ambience was interesting and quirky. I came here with a group of 6 about a month ago. We tried to order the udon cashew noodles, but were told the udon noodles were being used for the duck special so we couldn’t have that. We tried to order the mushrooms small plate but were told the mushrooms were being used for the steak special, lastly when we finally got to order our meals the waiter came out to tell our friend who got a salad with tofu that they were out of tofu and he allowed them to substitute for something else. The food we did get was mediocre. Duck empanadas(very basic flavor), brisket egg rolls(very greasy and basic flavor), wasabi steak(great steak, but it was just a steak with fried mushrooms, no side), duck udon(good flavor), burger(our friend loved this)! Needless to say we were disappointed and underwhelmed. We were so excited to try this place, but to be told we couldn’t order things on the menu because the ingredients were being used for the specials was incredulous. I see that many of the good reviews are for the chefs dinner. I’d love to try this place again, but that initial try put a sour taste in my mouth. I’ll keep checking reviews to see if y’all work the kinks out! Good luck!
This is the best restaurant in Texas. Fight me.Bartender and drink selections were flawless...entertaining and knowledgeable (ye be warned if you have no stomach for puns). My wife and I enjoyed the chefs table experience as a warm up to a reservation we have next month at a 3 Star Michelin experience we were looking forward to, and Chefs J and A delivered so far beyond expectations that I wont attempt to define it here. Eat everything, without question, and take yourself on a journey of Asian and Texas cuisine that you will never forget. Just dont call it fusion...that word is nothing if not inaccurate and inadequate. The dining room itself is, as was described, "a stream of consciousness" that deserves to be appreciated in and of itself. A perfect experience. Special call out for Sake fans, though not required at all to still have a top shelf (heheexperience.Thank you Chefs...thank you.
My review is more of a 4 1/2 but they dont have that option. We started with the butternut squash soup and it was perfect because it was so cold out. Then we had the brisket egg rolls. This is why I dont think it is 5star. You got of them for 12.00. I would think 8.00 is fair. We had a special Thai main lobster salad, asparagus tempura. We also had the triple burger without the bun. The food was good. Will for sure be back.
Really enjoyed my meal. Went for a friends birthday and it was a good time!Noteworthy foods...The WONTONS wooooowwwwSmoked duck bisqueThe "sake to me" cocktail was really REALLY good.Chicken and waffles was good, but small. In fact, most of the entrees could have been a bit bigger for the price, but the flavors made up for it. Would go back
Love this place. Fun atmosphere without being too kitschy, good food, and pleasant service (not too intrusive). Try the Shogunate Smoked Brisket Springrolls, Charred Asparagus, or Duck Udon. I hope this place sticks around, I would absolutely come again.
The chefs table was amazing. The staff was very friendly and engaging. We went on our anniversary and it was a very special night.
Its overpriced compared to the quality honestly. Its not bad but it is bad for the price.
Can I give negative stars??? Perhaps the worst food Ive eaten. Very odd waiter, would walk away in the middle of us asking a question. We ordered & the food took less than 10 minutes to come out - proving its not fresh at all. It was empty so we should have known. Hated the drink & the waiter ignored that, no attempt to give me something better. Barely ate the food & he also ignored that. DO NOT GO THERE!!!!
Super quirky, punny, yet delicious. Fair pricing, and you can tell that the chefs (who visited our tablewere passionate and knowledgeable about their food. Highly recommend for trying something different. The clams and the resulting broth was exquisite!
Really friendly and helpful bartender turned me on to some of the best udon noodles.
Im so glad this spot opened up because it is SO DANG DELICIOUS. Theyre creating super unique, fun fusions like their Korean burger and spicy clams in a pho-like broth. The charred asparagus were incredible, too (with a gooey egg on top mmmm). Oh and their bison wontons are addictive. The space is super dope too. Highly recommend it for a date night, HH with friends, or even a casual lunch (once they open for lunch!)
Wow! Impressed by the shrimp and grits with Thai tamarind and coconut curry, great marriage!
Loved the decor, the staff-- the FOOD! It was different and delicious! Yes, kinda spendy but worth it for the experience, IMHO. Read the other reviews here and the negativity in one in particular, I find extremely unwarranted. Check those profiles and you will see those reviewers have nothing positive to say about ANY establishment. Our waiter was SUPER nice and cheerful. It helped to make our group time all the more enjoyable! Cant wait to come back!
TL;DR: the concept of this restaurant not only has already been done in another Austin restaurant but is also poorly executed and confusingly done from the kitschy Asian inspired decor to the Asian fusion/ southern food concept. The decor of this restaurant looks like it would have been cool and trendy in the early 2000s but today seems outdated. From the red lighting to the metal chain curtain, the hanging paper umbrellas and the 5+ TV screens playing anime, it’s extremely overkill. The names of the dishes such as “harajuku girls fried wontons” and “ninja shredded red cabbage & carrot salad” not only make zero sense but are also borderline racist. On to the food. Overall, the presentation was lacking and the flavor of each dish was very one dimensional. The curry sauce that the duck empanadas came with did not complement the empanadas well, leaving me very confused about the taste. The udon cashew noodles did not look appetizing when they came out and the noodles were very soggy and over cooked while there was no element of crunch in that dish. Lastly, the Mongolian beef was incredibly salty to the point where it was inedible. We were told by one of the owners to eat it with rice but even still it was way too salty and we were only given a tiny portion of rice while a extra bowl would have been $4. The prices of the dishes are already astronomically high and the poor quality of the food makes it even less worth it spend your money here.I got the overall feeling that this restaurant is trying extremely hard to fit in with the trendy Austin food scene and it really misses that mark. Whoever runs this restaurant seems to be making a desperate move of drawing on overt stereotypes of Asian culture to sell food, further perpetuating these stereotypes such as exoticizing Asian culture and by not focusing on one Asian cuisine, enforcing the belief that all Asian cultures are the same. Leaving the restaurant, the overt racism and poorly executed food figuratively and literally left a salty taste in my mouth.
Great ambiance, amazing drinks, friendly staff. This new hot spot lures you in with its great decor and keeps you happy with the amazing bespoke cocktails and great conversation with the bartenders. Definitely a must see!
