Hostel Del Lago - in Solola, Guatemala
Hostel Del Lago in Solola
Description
Excellent and helpful staff, good accommodation close to most places in town and great facilities, will be coming back again whenever I come back to San Marcos
MoreI really enjoyed staying here and look forward to coming back. Lake view is amazing. Yoga studio is great. Volunteer staff is warm and very helpful. Breakfast is delicious with great portions.I stayed in a private room, which was located down the walkway and away from the road, so it was pretty quiet at night. Hot water was great. There is construction on site currently, but it is minimal.Only suggestion would be to have 1-2 nightly events where travelers can meet and get to know one another - movie night, game night?
MoreI really really enjoyed my stay at Hostel Del Lago, I only stayed for one night but if I go back to San Marcos this will 100% be where I stay again! Free breakfast is included in the price and on Sundays there is free use of the sauna. The beds are extremely comfortable and the overall atmosphere is very chill. Lots of amenities and the showers are very spacious and hot! Would definitely recommend.
MoreGreat place to spend a night or two. The hostel has THE BEST FRONT BEACH IN TOWN.
MoreI loved this hostel. The owner is super creative and a great host, and its one of the most beautiful spots on the lake. The cafe had great food and theres an awesome sauna and yoga deck. I highly recommend this place.
MoreId trade the free breakfast for a fan/AC, free water and more privacy and light in the dorm
MoreGood value for money and best access for swimming or chilling in the lake in San marcos. But, no hot water, not so clean and the staff pretty self concentrated and not so nice.
MoreHighly recommended place! The hostal has a dock in front of the lake and a beautiful yoga shala, I spent most of my stay hanging there.Super friendly crew, delicious breakfast and simple and clean rooms.
MoreHostel Del Lago is such a special place. A piece of my heart will forever stay there, and I know if Im ever in Guatemala again, this is for certain the place to stay. Not only has the best location in the whole lake, with amazing views of the 3 volcanoes, but it also has a very relaxed atmosphere, ideal to relax and enjoy time in quiet nature. Theres also plenty of things to do at the hostel or very close by, and for all different ages (daily yoga classes, renting kayaks/sup, bouldering, and even a sauna!!!). The place was always very clean, with hot showers, nice and comfortable rooms, and good wifi in the whole property. The staff was so incredibly kind and friendly, and the owners Sarah and Bryan take care of the place and its guests with so much love and commitment.Id especially recommend to eat/hang out at La Sala, a very cozy bar that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and weekly events. It has good and cheap local food, and its ran by the most amazing people ever (Lauren & Ben).I stayed at this hostel for 2 months, and felt like I never wanted to leave. Thank you for such an incredible time!!!
MoreGreat hostel, very friendly staff. Sauna is free to guests on Sunday.
Spent the most amazing time here! This hostel has the best views and access to the lake and deck where you can swim/kayak/SUP! There’s lots to do in the lake for all ages. The rooms are super sweet and cosy and have everything you need, hot showers and wifi!!My all time favourite place to have some food and drinks was La Sala; a breakfast/restaurant/ bar with the best views and the best owners(Lauren and Ben).Couldn’t recommend this hostel enough, thank you Sarah and Bryan for an amazing unforgettable stay!
MoreHostel del Lago was a great starting point for our 3 month stay on the lake. The owners Bryan and Sarah couldnt have been more helpful in guiding us towards the best places to visit / things to do / connect us with friends / restaurant recommendations etc. Their volunteer staff were also super lovely and especially friendly and helpful towards our kids. Accommodation is basic but clean, but this is reflected in their excellent budget prices. However the location is the best in San Marcos, right on the lake with a beautiful dock and regular morning yoga classes. It wasnt for us for a long term base, but excellent starting point. Thanks guys!
MoreHostel del lago is a lovely place to stay! The rooms were clean, staff was friendly and helpful and its in a great location.I will definitely be back soon!
MoreDid not enjoy my time at this hostel. The dorm room I was in was right by the road. Which could have been fine but the door wasn’t sealed and had holes in it to the outside. Bugs of all kinds got into my bag and clothes. No toilet paper in the bathroom. The outlet fried my phone charger. And I did not see the free breakfast before leaving, but that may be on me for leaving very early, as I ended up sleeping in a hammock outside and wanted to get on with my day elsewhere. These concerns were voiced (calmlyto the reception, who was friendly and acknowledged the problem, but did not offer a solution or remedy.Edit: The owners response is off-base: From the rate I actually paid, to my expectations, to how I handled the situation. I was kind and never mentioned a review or compensation while I checked out. I chose to post this review after the fact because I don’t believe bug bites, bugs in my bags, and zero noise resistance to consistant street noise located cms outside this cabin from dusk to dawn should be expected at any location, Guatemala or not. To pin it on the conditions of a country or that I’m high maintenance, or that I’m some sort of dirtbag looking for a handout is pretty offensive. I don’t gain anything by writing this review. It’s not a personal attack. It’s a reflection of my experience at the establishments. The experience was not an ordinary one and I believe others considering where to stay should have information to pull from to make their own decision. I also believe in giving ownership the information and motivation needed to make change. I’m not high maintenance, I backpack around the world and I have pretty minimal expectations: sleep and safety.I wasn’t bitter, but after reading this and other responses (that are quite offensive, personal, and unproductiveI am dissapointed. Maybe simply try sleeping in the particular dorm for a night, and you’ll realize the door does need to be replaced and the conditions would drastically improve for your guests, resulting in more positive reviews for those that stay there
MoreWe really enjoyed Hostel de Lego.We slept in a private cabin with a great balcony. An amazing place to do yoga in the morning and enjoy the pleasant sun by the lake. You should pay a little more attention to the cleanliness of the rooms. We had a great stay and would love to come back again.
MoreMy family and I (me, my partner and our little one), stayed at this hostel for 10 days at the end of November, and are very glad we did. One of the best things was there always being other kids around to play with, and other parents for us to meet and connect with. The owners are super helpful with advice about places to eat, activities happening, and just generally navigating a new place, language, culture...etc. This was very much appreciated, as travelling with little children can be daunting! And the volunteers were all super kind - we made friends with some of them and have kept in touch. Very friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Also its an easy walk to anything in San Marcos, as well as the dock for exploring other towns on the lake.
MorePros:- Yoga Classes several times a dayCons:- Hostel is under construction/renovation (we know what that means)- Rooms were dirty includes Spiders and the smell of ratshit- No socialising Areas- My Towel and some of my food disappeared after 2 days- Toilet did not work properly during my whole stay- Volunteers are used as cleaning personnel
MoreI booked a room though facebook messenger. The owners told me about the hostel being not anymore a party hostel but a family hostel but did not mention that ... it was under heavy construction! We had workers working on scaffolding just right to our windows, it was SUPER NOISY and we did not feel safe about our belongings. The main part of the hostel is not accessible!PLEASE DONT GO IN THIS HOSTAL WITH SUCH DISHONEST OWNERS !
MoreNice place to spend the night over and hang out. Friendly staff and good internet service. Just a short walk from San Marcos dock. Ill be there next time i visit the lake!
MoreThank you for making this the worst birthday I ever had in my life. Maybe you should figure out if you really want to run a hostel cause it seems like that at least one of the owners hates to be around people. Glad that I just booked for one night.
MoreThe hostel could be very nice due to its location directly at the lake and the free sauna! Also the evening activities were nice.Unfortunately, the staff was mostly not too friendly with us, and our room has not been cleaned properly. I also think the yoga classes are too expensive for the guests. We already pay a lot for a tiny dirty room (including a breakfast without coffee :‘( ), so make the Yoga on a donation basis or cheaper!
MoreLove the vibe, the food, the view, the common area! Great hostel. If you are out in the dorm room next to the main entrance gate make sure you have extra strength ear plugs! I’ve never been in a room that was as noisy as this one from street noise and dogs. They should really consider turning that room into a storage room.
MoreThe lake view is outsdtanding and the views of the volcano incredible. But that’s the only positive, food is over priced, breakfast doesn’t come with tea/coffee and is charged extra. Portions are small, staff are miserable. Everything is charged extra, something I have never experienced in any of the many hostels I’ve stayed in. Dirty seats and furniture, flies everywhere as no cleaning is done. Beds are hard and rooms smell for what they are. As a hippie place, there are a lot of local workers who are worked to exhaustion. Not a nice venue at all
MoreThe view of the lake is incredible and the dock is a great place to view the scenery across the lake to the volcanos.Considering this is a hippy hostel and commune it is very capitalist. Which is completely against the hippy movement. With breakfast you have to pay extra for tea or coffee, this is the first time I have ever experienced this in any hostel I’ve stayed in (and that’s a lotthe food is good but again very over priced and they closed the common room and charged for entry because they chose to pay a band to play. That’s down to you not me, you charge for the bar and don’t allow outside drinks so you would have made that back. Again for a hippy place it is run very capitalistic like a fortune 100 company 👎🏼
MoreThe view is very nice. The Mexican burrito was lacking in flavour, the filling was mainly bland rice, french fries were good. The taco salad my friend had was a new addition and that was pretty good. The fruit smoothie was very watered down. Dont get the iced coffee, they charge you extra for yesterdays coffee.
MoreNice location, but full of flies and barking dogs. Food was ok too, but nothing special, its like bar hang out food. The clerk didnt speak Spanish so when she took my order she couldnt communicate anything with the cooks and just tried to ignore our food requests. I went over and asked the cooks about the type of fish, and to request our food prep and they accommodated us.The only reason I like this place is because they have a beautiful dock.
MoreReally great hostel! Ive been back many times. Its the only hostel in San Marcos thats right in the water. Nice dock to hang out on, read, socialize. Always nice people to talk to.HOT showers, nice common areas, good restaurant and bar, comfortable beds. The only negative is guests cant bring in their own food to cook themselves. But a choice of four good breakfasts is included in your stay, and there are lots of restaurants to choose from in the town.
MoreThis is definitely one of the best hostels I’ve stayed at. It’s scenic patio bar with deck straight out to the lake is just breath taking. Evenings are filled with fun events, such as local drumming and dancing around camp fire, and movie night. During the day there are yoga classes, hikes, and other activities. Food is reasonably priced and delicious (carrot ginger soup, garlic fish, and vegetable fried rice were my favourite). The rooms are a bit basic and showers can be cold at times, but the location, environment and friendly staff made my stay super enjoyable there! Oh and the breakfast included was so good! Will definitely stay here again in the future.
More**Lounge area review only**The hubs and I are exploring San Marcos. Most placed charge ridiculous prices for food/drinks here. Last ditch effort, we walked to this hostel to check it out. The drive/walkway was a tad long to get to the lounge/cafe area, but it is well worth it. The lounge is big and open with various seating arrangements. The prices for food is reasonable. They also serve Kombucha and Abita brews. The kicker is the view from the dock. This hostel is right next to Hotel Dragon so they share the same views without the markup to stay there.Come to meditate, yoga retreat or just sit to enjoy the view.
MoreThe food is terrible, bland and expensive! If you dont know how to make a burger dont put it on the menu. For almost 10 dollars 65q, you get a mini burger with dry bread and burnt dry meat. And if you want to go for the only mayan dish on the menu, 60q for tomato sauce chicken mixed with some veg that tastes of nothing much.Even the kombucha, was over fermentated and tasted like plain vinegar. There are FAR better places to eat in San Marcos.
MoreWhen I saw the reviews I decided to stay in hostel del lago, I don’t think was a good choice. When we arrived the lady at the reception was a local girl and really nice. She said that the breakfast was included with four options, WiFi (only in the sharing spacesand hot water.- So the true is that they DONT HAVE HOT SHOWER ( its seriously cold, and we even tried the shower from other rooms).- There are no plugs in the room (so how are you suppose to charge your phone?)- Breakfast wasn’t 4 options, when we came down for breakfast he just gave two options of cereal or pancake (the other choices was out of order).- They run by volunteers who seems to care about the hostel and they don’t speak Spanish ( I know it’s an international hostel, but seriously? SI NO HABLAS INGLÉS NO TE VAN A ENTENDER. Which is really bad).- Apparently while I was there the owners were there as well. And before I knew that I greet and say “hi” to them and they just ignore me. Nice owners. They do have a nice view of the lake, and apparently you don’t need to sleep here to visit. So I recommend you to stay in another hostel (there’s a lot of cheaper optionand come here for the view and you can get beers at the bar.
MoreThe prices are interesting when you stay 3 nights (third night free).Really good breakfast !! But not the coffee that you have to pay... nice bar , lots of places to chill , the Pier, hammocs, couch .. the 6 bed dorm is not really nice ... And a bit dirty. The kitchen opens only at 12 and it s a shame because we wanted to use it in the morning ... and not really nice to cook in . I felt pushed to consumption... But the food at the restaurant was good, especially the pasta !
MoreDefinitely one of the better places to stay in San Marcos but they certainly dont set the bar high. They have a wonderful waterfront spot complete with a peaceful dock, yoga platform and steps down into the lake after a session in the nightly sauna! However, rooms are extremely hit and miss; the 6 bed dorm is cozy with plenty of airflow but the private rooms (for 200Q!?!are stinking, fly-infested, mouldy messes. We asked to move to another one but it was just as bad. The food is boring and overpriced, I seriously wanted to buy them some spices as their ingredients were fine but no flavour! Drinks are stupidly expensive and slightly larger than shooters. Coffee is NOT included in the free breakfast and there are no refills on a 10Q cup, Its literally the cheapest thing a hostel can offer their guests?! Finally the staff; most of them were incredibly unfriendly or unhelpful, very protective over immediate payment of everything which was annoying (they voided my dinner order when I went to get my wallet so I had to order all over againhonestly this place has so much potential but they need to either lower their prices or step up their game.
MoreHostel is located on a beautiful spot, definitely a plus of staying here. The common area and restaurant look out onto lake for stunning views. The food is excellent - wholesome, healthy options and the different evening entertainment was a nice touch.However.... this is certainly an example where you cant have it all. The dorms and bathrooms are revolting. This place is a health hazard. The rooms look like theyve had the same bedding on since they opened, the bathrooms will make your eyes water, make sure to wear flip flops in shower. Most of the staff are volunteers on a jolly so there is definitely an air of no one can really care less which is a real shame. Even those with a vested interest in the place have an air of arrogance as their selling point is the view thus dont need to bother with providing an all-round enjoyable experience. Shame. This would be a wonderful spot if the fear of tetanus wasnt ever present.
MoreThe party hostel with a great restaurant (fish tacos are amazingand a nice deck to hang out on. Rooms are budget options and very minimal, young backpacker crowd and a bit rundown.Would recommend for a hangout but stay elsewhere
MoreCommon area is beautiful with great view of the lake and quaint campfire. The private rooms are an old mattress, sheets and shelves. Theres much needed TLC here. The power was out in town during our stay which is a common occurrence in San Marcos though the hostel seemed very ill prepared. The toilets didnt flush and quickly became a hygienic nightmare, solar power is available but the manager prioritized a DJ for Friday night over working washrooms. Some of the staff were very friendly and others were terse and disorganized during breakfast. Dining tables were sticky and the couches are falling apart. The food was well made by local ladies.
MoreIf you are going to lake Atitlan San Marcos is where you want to go and hostel Del lago is where you want to stay! Staff are super friendly and helpful, food is great with a lot of veggie and vegan options, and you get HUGE portions as well, showers are hot, beds are comfy. There is a free sauna and great yoga classes in a beautiful setting right in the lake! Its got the best swimming dock in town as well! Everything you need is here and for a reasonable price! Couldnt recommend this place more! Enjoy your stay 😊
MoreRelax spot to enjoy the beautiful views of San marcos and the incredible Lake! Every Friday night is a live Caribbean DJ and every Tuesday night is a massive fire and drum circle. Free breakfast with board, and delicious local Kombucha. Staff is really laid back and friendly. Oh, and did I mention the Sauna! Lake, Sauna, Lake and repeat...
MoreBeautiful location with some fantastic food and staff. Great place to camp if youre looking for a different hostel experience. Definitely would recommend even if its just to stop by and enjoy the water, food, or fun night life activities.
MoreThis place is pretty great. It’s a little pricey for my budget, but I did it anyway because it’s a wonderful place to stay. I think for what you pay it’s worth it. The food is delicious, the beds comfortable, the nightly option to do something social is so cool (I was there on a Tuesday night for the drum circle), and the view is one of my favorites around the lake! This was one of my splurge hostels for the month :)
MoreI LOVED visiting this place! Its right on the lake, as the name suggests. It offers a variety of food and drinks, including kombucha, cacao, coffee, beer and more. They stock Bliss Balls from a local company (Love Probioticsand if you go, you MUST have one as they are amazing. There is free wi-fi, friendly people and is a chill place to hang out. They also offer yoga classes, drum circles, market days, etc., so its a real meet-up place. I definitely suggest walking out to the dock to enjoy the view.
MoreUps: Beautiful location, great open setup amazing doc to jump off, good place to connect with other travelers, fun events, friendly staff. Downs: Was hard to keep warm at night with minimalist bedding on the dorm bedsI would stay again and again for the atmosphere and beauty of the lake ♡
MoreThe location and view of the lake is wonderful. The staff is mostly workaway travelers so the quality of service could be better. The rooms were simple and pretty clean. The beds were ok. Not the worst but not luxury. The food was always good and I always had the granola for breakfast, which was a huge bowl of fruit with yoghurt and granola on top.The drum circle by the fire at night was really nice.
MoreVery nice place at the lake, with a (free for guestsevening sauna and daily morning yoga (for Q40). Most nights something fun going on (especially loved the drum circle). Good value for money (had a private for 2 people for Q170 including great breakfast). I heard the dorms are noisy but no problems in the private! They dont take reservations before so be there on time as they tend to get full. The only thing I missed here were hammocks ;)
MoreAmazing views and delicious food made fresh on a spot. Sauna and activities every day make it for great place to stay. Dorms were not particularly my favorite, but the price is great and includes breakfast to start your day right. I would love to stay here again.
MoreThe place was nice. Lots of opportunity to do yoga. There was some event every night like drumming circle, open mike, poker night. The food was great and the lake was amazing. I thought the cabins were very noisy (BRING EARPLUGS!and the washrooms smelled so bad, even after cleaning. They dont take reservations, so you need to just turn up and hope for the best. They put my friend and I in a 3/4 size bed (smaller than a queen and a bit bigger than a twinwhich was far too small and it made for a very annoying sleep, especially with all the noise. The staff were all foreigners (except the wonderful cooksand some were good and some were rude. In hindsight, I would stay somewhere quieter and just visit this place for the yoga and activities.Also- it can get cold in the evening with the wind coming off the lake so make sure to bring something warm to wear.TOO MANY DOGS. They have full range of the place and can be annoying as some beg for your food.
MoreIts like home. Great food. Great staff. Caring owners. Fantastic views. Amazing variety of entertainment. Respectful guests. Hot showers. Clean living spaces. The list goes on. I stay (and eat as often as possible!
MoreI went there for food and drinks but didnt stay over night. Very nice location, friendly staff, great carrot cake! And the view on the lake is beautiful. Tried yoga and had a wonderful traditional massage, too.
MoreBeautiful hostel! Really chilled out, friendly atmosphere. Good food at a good price. Its cheap and you also get a discount if your staying more than three days. Tried yoga for the first time on thier platform overlooking the lake and really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend to friends!
MoreReally great view right at the water. Good food, good prices , good atmosphere. Very laid back. Highly recommend. Fish n chips were 45Q, fruit shake was 15Q and kombucha was 10Q. Total was 70Q or $10USD. Good Wifi and beer selection.
