Museum with aquarium, stuffed animal and musical instrument collections, set in landscaped gardens.
Great place to send your day with the kids.Ideal to go on a sunny day to enjoy the outdoor spaces, parks, animals and space.
Has a large variety of subjects like evolution, culture/history, insects, fossils, lots of life size models, a small childrens interactive area ect. The staff here were very friendly and helpful, they offered my friend a stool when we came here to draw in the museum. Overall 10/10 would come here again (especially for the farm animals!!)
It is just amazing.. it is almost on the hill and has great central london views. Beautiful landscape. It has museum as well which us free to visit. It takes almost 2 hrs to finish all the sections of the museum. There is butterfly park and aquarium as well which are paid attractions. There is Cafe as well which provide lip-smacking food and hitaswell as cold beverages. A must visit for families.
Was interesting. Lots of other activities to do at a cost, from £5pp upwards. But if looking for a free day out and want to use a couple of hours, worth doing. Parking is tricky, I was fortunate to park outside one of the entrances but there is no parking on site, have to find a nearby street to park on.
Excellent museum and free, which makes it extremely popular, especially with children. Prepare for large crowds during the holidays. And when youre done with the museum theres a wonderful park to explore outside with views all the way to central London and the Shard.
A wonderful exhibition space to visit. I had a great experience viewing all the galleries.
The place has soooo much to offer ESPECIALLY on a Sunday when the market is open! The butterfly exhibit is really nice but be aware its humid and hot. There is mini golf for the children too!! And a beautiful park to relax and have a simple picnic at
The garden was very nature vibe giving, views 😍 the museum was intresting, if Im to be honest. Definitely not boring, and lots of different cultures.Love that Wizkid, and Femi kuti had a part in the museum. There was lots of animal sculpture, skulls, bones, bee hives etc.A good place to take children, there were lots families there and it was a very nice place to be.There is also a wish tree, and it was just lovely. To read what children wish for, and are thankful for was beautiful. Its also free guys, the museum. They have a aquarium, but youve to pay and also a cat and dog exhibition, check their website for more information.Staff were friendly, and seemed happy to work there.Try and go on a weekday, less people in a way so you have more time and space to go around.
Great free museum in south of london.A must visit to check out the walrus.During the warmer seasons, its great to visit the markets on the weekends and eat at the conservatory cafe outside. It reminds me so much of an english garden. Their cafe serves a cute chocolate square brown cookie with a picture of the walrus.Occasionally they do showcase an exhibition such as the lego one many years ago on the basement floor. All in all, a great cheap or free way to spend with the family any day of the week.
This is an amazing place ❤️ would recommend go through the free world museum, garden and farm. The butterfly house is beautiful, aquarium is nice but a bit too small if you want to pay for it as well.. Perfect view of London for picnics, they even have free deck chairs and a food/drinks market on Sundays when we went. Honestly, you could spend the whole day there.
Beautiful museum and gardens. The permanent collection is free to visit and well worth the trip.
A really interesting museum especially for the little ones! The part of the natural history was amazing! Highly recommended!
The main part of the museum is wonderful. Really interesting pieces from all over history.Tickets are required for the aquarium and the special exhibition. The garden is big and has animals one can pet
Fantastic place for a day out. The museum is free, but you need to pay for Butterfly house and aquarium. There is a cafe next to the museum whichis reasonably priced. The gardens are lovely, there is a bar, seating area and the day we went a DJ. All in all a great day was had.
Really lovely place to visit varied paid exhibits and aquarium to visit. Plus the main museum which is free . The grounds are awesome which also Imclude a little farm, butterfly sanctuary and mini golf(chargedand outdoor musical instruments, and big beach chairs scattered about. Ooh and the cafes and gift shop are quite expensive but as they offer so much for Free so its kinda worth it
Great place for families with to enjoy the beautiful park with skyline view and explore history at the museum nd the butterfly house
Amazing day out. Plenty of unusual plants to look at.Child friendly. Picnic tables and deckchairs available. It would be a good idea to book tickets in advance for the Butterfly House.
This is such a lovely museum.I took my two grandchildren aged 3 and nearly 6. They absolutely loved all the exhibits in the Natural History section. The aquarium was really well presented with a great variety of fish and aquatic plants and animals. The Dog and Cat Interactive Space kept them occupied for over an hour!Excellent value for money as there’s so much to do and see.Great restaurant (see picwith good food at reasonable prices.
Beautiful butterfly house which is very humid but well worth a visit. The museum itself is interesting and varied, kids will love the animals on display and the interactive parts definitely worth a visit.
Its a small exhibition focused on musical instruments, stuffed animals & assorted ethnic clothing and lifestyles. There are special exhibitions but you have to pay for them. So it doesnt taken long and then you can go for a walk in the gardens.
We visit the Horniman Museum annually. My boys absolutely love it here. This year we visited the Cats and Dogs Exhibition and we had a great time.
Great place for any age!Besides being free for general admission the museum offers a broad range of historical and biological knowledge. There’s an interactive area for children where you can see a real beehive. The cafe has a decent selection of food on the pricier side. The gardens have sections ideal for children as well as areas where one can relax. On top of that there are a lot of little signs that give useful information about what the plants actually are.Definitely recommend this place for a day trip!
I didnt know about this museum at all until it was mentioned by a friend that we go to visit it. So glad that I went along. By the time I had finished visiting the galleries, I felt as though I had been on a world tour in two hours! Absolutely mesmerising and fairly interactive. It has well set out gardens and a cafe. There is also a gift shop. The museum is free unless you want to go to the see the special exhibition and the aquarium. It even has a market on sundaysDefinitely worth spending a few hours here. Very easy to get to from Forest Hill station.
A fantastic learning experience all round. The Museum has the collections of explorer Horniman from Natural history to musical instruments. The gardens are extensive with a mini zoo and a butterfly house. Whats not to like.
A gem of a museum and the gardens are worth a visit too. Theres a lovely little Market selling veg , produce and crafts on a Sunday, plenty of bike parking for cyclists and best of all (apart from special exhibitionsits Free !!
Plenty of activities to get after in the museum and gardens. The outdoor animal walk is free which is small but fun. The cats and dogs exhibition in the museums is fun and full of activities and quizzes the whole family can participate in. We spent at least 30 mins inside. The general exhibition is also super fun to walk around. Cafe has some good refreshments and outdoor seating. Very child friendly. Would recommend.
Beautiful museum, garden and market! Good nature trial and animal walk.
I went to the museum on a Sunday. Parked on one of the streets nearby for free.We bought tickets to see the cat and dog exhibition but then also went to the hair exhibition, music exhibition and then the last one was call the world exhibition I think… these were all free but you could give a donation. It was interactive, interesting and so much fun. We then went to the park outside and hung out for a while as the weather was nice (for a change!!).I would recommend it!!
Beautifully park, well maintained and with tons of activities or things to do for kids and families. Burgers and ciabattas are very decent plus kiosks everywhere with beer, ice cream and cafe all around the park. Parking is not easy compared to other similar parks around but given the amount of stuff you can do here, it is worth the trouble! The view of the city is second to none, compared to other local and quiet parks around that is.
We had a beautiful day here. Initially booked for butterfly house (adult £6.50 and children under 3 are freeand it was very nice. There were many butterflies flying around and a small glass house with cocoons hanging. After that we went to the small Aquarium (adult £5and my daughter enjoyed it soo much. They had a few museums for free which was very interesting Global Collection, Music instruments (with a lot of collectionsand more.My daughter enjoyed walking through the small animal farm too.Outside they had a space to have picnic and a small pretty flower garden. We enjoyed it a lot :)The only critic i have are the prices in the cafeteria. It was very expensive!Next time we would bring our own food and have a nice picnic there.
Beautiful museum, garden and market! I come here multiple times for different exhibitions and Sunday market. Good nature trial and animal walk.Such a nice place for family outdoor activities.
Beautiful place with great exhibitions! The ticketed ones are reasonably priced and worth it. Not to mention their cafe food is amazing as well.
Amazing museum with free exhibitions about very interesting topics like Hair! Extraordinary collection from plants and animals to cultural menageries with curiosities like the mermaid skeletons
Surprising museum, I wasnt expecting to find such variety of taxidermized animals. This part of the museum is free. To visit the Butterfly House and the Aquarium you must buy tickets. But you can buy there in the entrance. It had no queue.
We visited on Thursday 10th for a home education workshop, a visit to the aquarium and also the new Cats and Dogs exhibition. The space was used well in all areas, loose covid restrictions but staff and visitors were still respectful of distancing etc. Wheelchair access is very good (parts are very steep and inaccessible but on the whole it works welland each area we visited was clean and tidy. Staff are always helpful and friendly. The gardens are stunning. We love the Horniman Museum and recommend everyone to pay it a visit.
There is bound to be something that surprises you here. A great day out with little ones. Aquarium, gardens and mini zoo are enough to keep them entertained. Take a packed lunch if on a budget, the food is good in the cafe but prices are high.
Great little museum with a mix of interesting contemporary exhibits, collections of world artifacts and a Victorian taxidermy room! Busy during half term but worth it for the Aquariam which is small but well formed. Well worth a visit.
my boyfriend took me there for vday ❤️ quite a lot of children on bank holiday be warned but amazing place with loads of things to see. we stayed there for like 3hrs. Book tickets in advance bc of covid tho!!!
What a delightful collection - anthropology, natural history, culture, pop culture, musical instruments - geared to children as well as adults.I went during half-term so lots of families with kids and the reactions of the kids was great to watch. We all owe thanks to Mr Horniman and the current staff, as well.
I went on a Sunday when the market was there. I had a lovely time. There are many benches to sit (a bit rare if you ask meand you can enjoy the beautiful gardens.
We had an absolutely amazing time today at the museum. My kids, 5 and 2 years old, were really intrigued by the specimen of the animals and the aquarium. The butterfly house receptionist was a bit aloof but the man working there was really friendly. He showed us a very long hanging caterpillar and made a butterfly origami for my daughter. She is holding on to it as her treasure. Thank you.The cafe is very efficient and clean and the food is one of the best in the parks and museums we’ve been to. The Guineas cake was superb. They are still serving delicious mull wine and mull cider as well as baileys hot chocolate. I went for a spiced pumpkin soup which was scrumptious for a cold day like today. The kids enjoyed their pasta and fish fingers. We also appreciated the drinking water stand where we refilled our water bottle. We really felt that a lot of thoughts have been put into making our visit enjoyable. Thank you so much to all the staff. One thing that could be improved is the online booking system. We kept having issues with it and ended up having to go to the visitor centre to get our tickets.
The Horniman is slightly eccentric compared to some of the larger London museums but they have a great display on anthropology around the world with loads of different sections which I really enjoyed. The gardens are pretty and big considering their location, and its very conveniently located if youre based in South East London as you can drive and park nearby.Theres also an aquarium which is cool (though you have to pay for thisand lots of stuffed animals which would be good for people interested in taxidermy, although this is avoidable if (like me!youre not so keen on it!
It is a wonderful place. Many thigs to see and enjoy. The best option is to booking. There are some free areas and you hace to pay for get in the aquarium. Butis to expensive and dont have diversity fish.
Nice, quaint little museum with lots of displays. Free to enter, although require some prior booking online. Certain exhibitions require a fee.The gardens give you a great view of Central London.
The Museum has a loads of Historical facts, Butterfly house was a pleasure. We enjoyed the aquarium, Nature trails,Meadows walk, and lots of fall colours perfect for photography. A small nice cafe for refreshments. Washrooms available.
Enjoyable day out. Manicured gardens, clean tidy and a bonus of lovely weather. Toilets in the gardens as well as museum. Wheelchair and pushchair access all around gardens and musuems have lifts. Museum it self was clean and not too packed so you can walk through freely and apply social distancing.
Bit of a hidden gem! The Horniman Museum and Gardens is off the London tourist route and makes a great family day out. The Museum houses some wonderful artifacts and the Gardens offer a relaxing environment with some stunning views of the city. Well worth a visit.
I’m so very lucky to live so close to such a gorgeous museum and gardens. The museum itself is like a small natural history museum with lovely Victorian exhibits and also the famous Walrus! Lots of new and interesting exhibits also with a wonderful music room. The animal walk and butterfly houses within the grounds are also aMust see!
Wow! I was blown away why is this museum is not as popular as the others I don’t know! But it’s definitely one of my favourite. Perfect size to be able to see everything at a leisurely phase, lots of informative bits and bobs. The children and myself thoroughly enjoyed it. The Gardens is also fab, you can have a picnic, have a nice walk around, there’s a mini golf and also a little farm. A very well day spent here and will definitely be recommending this place to my friends :staff are also lovely and helpful couldn’t fault it
Such an awesome day out. Genuinely worthwhile coming here. Although it is of course smaller than some of the others in central London, the displays are outstanding. In addition, the gardens are beautiful and they have an aquarium and butterfly house. The cafes do excellent coffee and have a very wide range of cakes and sandwiches too.
