This unfussy, diner-like Chinese joint with booth seating features dim sum & a large buffet.
Hong Kong House Restaurant in Nanaimo
Description
Privilege
At noon buffet was not ready. Servers not attentive and ver loud.
Some of the best takeout. Food was carefully prepared.
We were so excited to try it out with the good reviews but... we ordered chicken egg foo young but didnt see any meat, so we kept looking at it closely and found few shredded pieces... half way through. The beef pepper dish had four thinly sliced beef and LOTS of vegetables unlike the advertised picture. The two other meat dish we ordered had basically all broccolis and carrots. Bought take out food for the guests, but it was so embarrassing... should have just ordered salad for this price and saved money. Taste is a bit salty, so now we have lots of salty vegetables left...
MoreIndoor dining is great...takeout? Food is good, service is just rude!
(Updatedwent in for buffet lateish and everything was still reaonably fresh and tasty went from a 3 to a 4 the server with the high pitched voice was vwry sweet and polite. The foods was kinda bland but the woman on the phone was polite and helpful and knowledgeable about items but the prices were high for the portion
MoreThe food is fresh the wait times short. Excellent selection on the buffet. Popular place and busy.
MoreWaited 45 min for order of 5 dishes take out. Food taste like food court fast food but in restaurant price.
MoreBest chinese buffet in Nanaimo. Went there for daughters birthday and she loves it there. My wife and I dont eat pork or shellfish and there were plenty of chicken and beef options.
MoreIts apparently modified Chinese foods restaurant. Not expensive and lower your expectations. The services are good.
MoreThe pork was not cooked properly I had a very bad stomach issue like food poisoning it was bad for four days firt and last time I order at this place
MoreFantastic selection. Garlic prawns, hot pot. Perfect wok hei flavours. This place is always busy for a reason, the buffet. But order off the menu for the best food.
MoreI have had visited a ton of chinese buffets in small towns of the USA and found them to be borderline so so.It was refeshing to be here. The staff were always attentive and having fun. Manager lady was polite and the food was great. Wasnt thirsty AF after the meal so the use of msg was little or none.If I were to nitpick, the chow mein could have the egg noodles done thru a wok Instead. They were steamed by the restaurant, but at least a lot healthier this way.Would definitely come back
MoreIts disgusting. The containers are like small bowls and they charge 16 dollars for a container. I am hoping that I dont get sick from eating this "food".
MoreWent for the lunch buffet it has a large selection of hot and cold items , myself I’d rather Quality over Quantity .
MoreUse to be good, ate there for years, but went July 3rd and it was very poor quality for the high price. Wont recommend or return
MoreWent for buffet. It was 28/person. Quite pricey. But food was okay
Ordered take out! They offered %5 off the bill if I payed in cash (which is how I was paying). The bill was $100. I believe that soend $50=%5 off$100=%10 off...blah blah blah.Other options should be spend a certain amount and get rewarded. Free chicken fried rice or chow mein..blah blah blahBottom line is the food is fantastic and ill still come back but times are tuff for all of us
MoreThe buffet was fantastic. Had a lot of variety of authentic Asian chinese food.
I havent been here since pre-pandemic and this place seems to have upped a notch since our last visit.Buffet had a great array of dishes, including prawns, duck, chicken, wonton soup, vegetable stir fry, a salad bar, dessert bar, too many to list. Each dish was labeled and everything looked fresh and delicious. Empty dishes were promptly replenished, so no waiting for your favorite dish.We went there around 5ish and when we left around 6ish, the place was filling up fast. The place is huge, so no lineups. This place definitely merited the 5 star review!
MoreI absolutely love this place, amazing Chinese food. Staff is amazing 🙂 definitely a friendly environment
MoreWeve been long time customers but no more. Tonights order was once again cold, the rice over spiced to where it looked green and was dry. The sweet and sour sauce was really watery and the coating was gloppy and looked like yesterdays leftovers. All for 65.00. Its getting way overpriced, even when eating in at the buffet and the quality is inconsistent other than being in a steep decline. So very disappointed in my once favourite treat.
MoreThis was quite possibly the worst food Ive ever had. It seems they just dont give a s..t. A total rip off. Bennies I miss you so much. Please come back and show these greedy, uncaring, degenerates what real authentic Chinese food is, because what their serving is pure garbage. Totally laughable really. I will never return and may actually never eat Chinese food from any restaurant ever again. Yeah it was that freaking bad. Its like, whats wrong with these people, and how do they stay in business. You know because their food is putred bags of wasted dreams and aspirations, that will go down in history as the worst food ever to hit the mean streets of Nanaimo. For shame Hong Kong House. For shame.
MoreWhat a rip off....dont go here ever. The food is ok but this is 80$ worth of food. The fried rice and chowmein come in 8" x 5" containers and were not stuffed by any means. The Wonton soup! Had 6 Wontons, two slivers of broccoli and one piece of carrott and the broth was very watery. Outside of the containers were greasy. Just overall poor. Before i wrote this i called to let them know. This is what they said "Can you re count the wontons please because we always put ten and the containers we have been using for 4 years. We can offer you a discount on your next meal" Quality Foods chinese food all the way!
MoreI was told by a friend that the food from here was good and prices were fair, but when I ordered delivery I was extremely disappointed. Portions were very small and food was very overpriced and to top it all off the food quality wasnt where it should have been. The fried rice was extremely salty, wonton soup was mostly watery broth with a couple wontons and the honey garlic pork had so much garlic that garlic was the only thing you can taste. The rest of the food was mediocre at best. There wasnt enough food to feed a family of 4 your better off ordering food from elsewhere.
MoreWe went there specifically for Dim Sum only to find out they do not offer it. They had two typical Dim Sum dishes served with the the buffet but that was it. The rest was your typical Chinese Food offering. Nothing special but not bad either. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive, regularly visiting our booth. The bathroom could have used a good cleaning.
MoreThere is a great selection of choices. Everything was fresh and delicious. Good desserts also. We were a group of siblings who met here from the Mainland, as well as various parts of the Island. We appreciated them letting us stay a while.
MoreMy family travel from Victoria just to eat here! Last time we were there was June 2020 for my birthday during a record heat wave. They let us stay as long as we needed to avoid the heat ❤️ staff is super friendly and the food is AMAZING!!! We are going back next weekend to celebrate the lifting of the vax pass mandate CANT WAIT
MoreOrdered take out. $85.00 and got very small potions and low quality food to bout. Food prices have gone up yes, but this didnt feed our family of 4 whats so ever. We also recieved a vegitarian dish that had meat. Our other vegiatrain dish (vegetable chop suey also had bits of pork)
MoreGood at atmosphere, Great service, Amazing food!
Take out order done online, said it would be ready at a certain time, went to the restaurant five minutes early so the food would be as hot as possible when I got it. Was told meal would be five minutes. Should have known it wasn’t going to be the case judging from the door dash driver fuming in the entry way. Waited twenty minutes past my order ready time, and we’ll beyond the five minutes I was told. Was not offered a drink while I waited, finally got the food and high tailed it home to open up the food and pretty much all of it was cold, noodles in the chowmein weren’t cooked through, pretty much the whole thing went into the compost. Waste of time and money. This is their third strike with me, won’t be back.
MoreOrdered delivery. Got a small hot and sour soup when we ordered a large and I am 100% positive that something in it is rotten. This was confirmed by my partner. The meal is not worth the $80+ we paid for it. Won’t order here ever again and I suggest u order with extreme caution.
MoreWide selection of food! Hit the spot! Love buffets. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. Would recommend this to anyone craving Asian food.
MoreSooo delicious. Was looking for just this and traveled all the way from parksville and it was much better than expected!! Came in right before they closed their lunch and was so thankful they took us in, and the food was amazing, lot of options to choose from!!! Wonderful service as well. I would give 10 stars If I could. A true gem.
MoreAmazing food. Ginger beef 5/5: chow mein 5/5: all was amazing. A dishwasher forgotten and they immediately delivered it. They have their own drivers so do not use skip or those other app places as they take a huge cut.
MoreTried Hong Kong House takeout for the first time. Staff were so very polite, offered tea while I waited and worked quick to get my order ready. Then, upon getting home, my family and I were surprised at how good each dish was. Great quality and delicious. Possibly the best Chinese food we’ve had in a very long time. Can’t wait to try them again. Thank you!
MoreTo avoid New Year’s Eve rush, I placed my order on line at 4 pm. It said 20 minutes. An hour later, after countless attempts to get through on the phone, they told me driver had just left. Long story short, 3 more calls telling me the same thing. I received my order 3 hours later at 7 pm. It never occurred to them for customer service to say no charge. If it was an hour and a half on a busy night I would’ve paid 50%. Three hours later, no way. Kind driver said I can’t reach them, so I’ll pass along no charge. The one star is for him. Food was just ok.
MoreBeen trying to find a good Chinese food restaurant in nanaimo for Years. Ordered from Hong Kong house tonight and it was amazing. The delivery took 40 minutes longer than they said but its New years eve and totally understandable. The food was hot when it got here and the portion sizes are good. Im glad I finally found a good Chinese food restaurant in nanaimo.
MoreFirst off letter me say they did an amazing job trying to keep up with the massive amounts of orders that were coming in due to the huge snow storm. So much snow I pulled 2 people who were stuck in snow banks. The food was great! Now let me address the ignorant husband and wife that were before me their review is below. Ed Van Herwaarden you are some of the most ignorant self absorbed people I have ever witnessed. At NO TIME were you ignored the young lady you were intimidating answered you every time you threatened to cancel your order. Your review is a joke and noone should pay and attention to it.Grow the hell up. You should be ashamed, but your to self absorbed to.Did I mention the food was great!
MoreWell I call a very large order in 45mins ahead . When I got there i was told my order was just about ready. After 20 minutes I inquired how long the order would be and I was basically ignored. So now its 45min from when I ordered plus the 25 minutes in the restaurant and still no order. I requested that they reimburse me my funds as I needed to leave and pickup someone at the ferry. Once again IGNORED. FINALLY got the order about 5 minutes later. The worst customer service service I
MoreService was great but the food seemed less appealing than when we visited last. Not complaining but I think it lacked its usual standard. I also noticed that there was a lot less people there as well, especially for a Saturday evening. Nonetheless Im sure it has a lot to do with all the restrictions imposed now. Hopefully things will get better.
MoreWas here with my girlfriend the other day, and she had never been to a buffet before. Safe to say her and I both loved the experience and the food was so good, we obviously went for seconds and then dessert. Definitely planning to visit again!
MoreYou must eat here! Best service EVER! Waitresses are quick, friendly and care about your satisfaction. The owner greets you and says thanks for coming when she is out front. She works hands on cooking and the flavours are simply authentically Asian with the ginger and other spices they cook with. I love the veggie /🥬🧅and scallops dish and the old standby: Ginger Beef ... real ginger folks! Even with lockdown they keep on going! High five to you 😀Many regards, Lana
MoreExotic menu in great price. Good hospitality and clean place.Felt like a feast and can eat them all day 😋There are more choices for all. Kids, elders, teens - healthy treats.
MoreTell you what...this is quite possibly the best take-out Chinese food we have ever had.It was our Thanksgiving dinner...we are on a 7 week vacation drive-around in the 4x4 RV. We had found a street to park on, overlooking the harbour. Phoned in our order...using the address across the road heh heh...Man...was it ever good!!Picture of our order on the stovetop and sunrise the next morning.
MoreThe buffet was low on choices. Rice was dried out. Sweet and sour pork was very fatty. Pork dumpling also was very fatty. I only ate half of a plate before I was turned off.
MoreAbsolute best place to eat! Went there with my sister and we did the #tipthebillchallenge and they earned the bill. The service was amazing and all very friendly. The food was so good!!!
MoreThe buffet was mediocre at best. There was not one item that I could describe as excellent. The food descriptions did not match up with the trays in some cases so it was hard to know what some of the items were. Some items were surprisingly spicy with no warning labels. Many items were tough, dry, and unappealing. The dessert bar and salad bar was quite tasty. There was one customer walking around and taking items from the food bars who was not wearing a mask and not sanitizing his hands before getting food. Very poor staff attention to this.
MoreI have been a customer of Hong Kong House for many years. I have a favorite couple of dishes that I have always ordered that cost around 30 dollarsThe prices have gone up small amounts for a few years. This last price increase cost 8 dollars for the two dishes. I understand that delivery costs are driving the business model but the owners have to be sensitve not to overcharge those of us who pick up our food. If I had spent 4 dollars more they have advertised they will deliver for free. I should not be forced to subsidize the delivery service on takeout picked up orders. I will no longer order food from this restaurant unless they go back to the old pricing structure, there is not the value given the quality of the food.
MoreLoved it! Amazing food, wonderful service. Definitely will he dining here again
Had a great choice of entrees for dinner. Everything was nice and hot. Server came by frequently to clear the table.
