Holy Redeemer Catholic Church - Place of worship in Kitty Hawk, United States
This is what my grown sons refer to as a "Boomer Mass." Its all very modernist with a 70s folk singer front and center (not even Jesus in the Tabernacle is front and center - that should tell you enough right there). We had the Parochial Vicar and I actually liked him. He seemed more reverent than I was expecting and gave a good homily. Many people were talking before, some during, and many right after Mass, as though they didnt notice anyone trying to kneel and pray pre-and post-Mass prayers. I received from the Deacon and lets just say when I opened my mouth to receive our Lord instead of holding out my hand like most others were doing, I was met with an aggressive angry thumb full-on in my mouth with the Host. Yuck. My son who was just in front of me knelt to receive, and Deacon seemed irritated. Maybe thats why I was on the receiving end of his angry thumb? It shouldnt be unexpected that the laity would want to show utmost reverence for the actual CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, body, blood, soul and divinity. Do these people not believe that or what?Despite the 70s folk gig vibe and the overall casual nature of the people and the place, the people were nice, and we were able to attend Mass at the beach without clown actors or puppets or altar-dancers or any of the horrors you hear at other Boomer churches, and for that I guess I need to be grateful.
Great mass and homily!
Fair warning if you come from a more reverent diocese, or even just one that follows the norms: buckle up.You will be micromanaged the entire Mass in a talkative display by the priest of what I think is called "clericalism." The priest will say you cant kneel after communion and will talk and explain the whole Mass like youre in a First Communion teaching Mass (hes the star of the Mass! So friendly! Except if you desire to kneel and pray as is your personal custom after receiving the Eucharist). The tabernacle is in the back of the church, so I was weirding out the lady behind us who couldnt figure out who I was looking at (Jesus, maam, Im looking at Our Lord over there in the corner). When you arrive the Tabernacle may be open and empty, because they move the Eucharist up to the front and leave Our Lord hanging out up there alone because of "The Pandemic". Lastly, you cant sing to half the songs because there is an Ani Difranco impersonator performing with a guitar (the forsaken organ looks so sadwhos pretty sure shes doing a gig and not leading the faithful in song. As a mother of 4 in my 30s, I think Im seeing the last gasp of the boomers who are still pretending they are following Vatican II.
Best catholic church ever!!1
I was heartbroken by this “liturgy”. We have a liturgy given to us, that is supposed to be revenant, holy, sacred, and God centered. The mass here was a circus side show complete with a woman standing by the altar playing guitar and turning what is supposed to be Gregorian Chant in to modern cheesy Protestantesque hippy sing song. Rather than God centered it was priest and lady with guitar centered. There was no visible tabernacle, and at the concentration of the host the priest didn’t even lift the offering to God. The modernist rot is complete here. If you’re a faithful traditional Catholic, you’re better off driving to VA Beach or something. I’ll also be contacting the bishop of this diocese.
The church is beautiful! I always look forward to seeing it when we visit OBX.
Very nice place and people.
Great mass. Love the daily mass and instruction during mass. I wish they would move the tabernacle to the alter. Because its at the back, this sends an inconsistent message about the importance of Jesus in our lives. Also people had loud conversations and did not jenuflect on 2 knees when Jesus was out of the tabernacle, on a side table in preparation for mass.
Beautiful mass and friendly locals...
Its hard to rate a Catholic church anything other than a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ because Jesus Himself is there in the flesh. It was clear that there were local regulars there, so a community exists (I wasnt sure what it would be like at a church where so many vacationers visit). The Knights of Columbus, priest and deacon were active and welcoming. You can see from the photos and its a more modern style of church (and the Tabernacle is in a open concept reserve chapel in the back of the sanctuary), but there are kneelers.
Great mass. The eucharist was not that dry.
Wonderful Priest, Father Walsh. Inspiring service and Homily. We always feel welcome when we attend this Catholic Church.
Great experience today. Message was about living now and share Jesus.
It was wonderful to attend Mass on the OBX, Kitty Hawk, NC
What a wonderful church... so glad I went to mass. Friendly, warm, humorous priest. I will visit again during my next adventure to the area.
Great service. Great folk guitar singer. Great looking church. Police standing outside incase. I enjoyed the mass and service. I was happy and pleased. .
Very welcoming to all. Invite your friends and neighbors! Such a big stress reliever to attend mass.
Beautiful Church and very friendly people.
Excellent place to go and donate blood every 2 months.
Thanks to them for blood drives!
We always attend weekly Mass at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church when we vacation at the Outer Banks. This is a very welcoming parish.
Blood drive every 60 days.
Excellent pastor
Priest really loves to talk.
Stations of the Cross are fantastic works of art, well worth visiting to see, stained glass art fits the area, beautiful church.
I went here a few years ago. Most unCatholic mass is ever witnessed. If I had to go into detail it would take me days
Always a nice mass while at the obx. I enjoy the priests homilies. Nice church.
Unless youre from Arlington or Lincoln you may not get it if you just dont have it. "Say the black; do the red."
Come to this church when ever we are visiting town here, which is more often now that our daughter lives here. Very friendly Pastor, gives good homilies.
Heavenly
This is a nice Roman Catholic Church for visiting Catholics.
Was the most uncomfortable, unCatholic Mass I have ever attended. I’ve been to a lot. I don’t even know if Jesus was present because the consecration did not seem sacramentally complete.
Totally agree with Paul F. Never experienced such liturgical abuse in a single mass. Way too much to list here. Wow.
I feel compelled to write a review of this location. I am a Southern Baptist. Recently I attended a Mass for a fellow brother that has gone home to be with the Lord. The Priest did an amazing job!!! Not only did he honor my brothers Catholic wishes he also made the rest of us feel welcomed and helped us understand what was occurring during the service. This Priest is a great man of God. The total experience was unlike any funeral/mass I have ever been to. The building was beautiful and everything went perfectly. If I were Catholic I would have no reservation about attend church here!!
I mean this charitably, but I have never witnessed more liturgical abuse in one Mass than the one we experienced this last weekend.
Wonderful church and mass
Wonderful church that accommodates OBX guests with multiple weekend Masses.
The church is nice and the priest are good in preaching, its just that I think it would be nicer if choir sings for the mass 😊
Great worship
Large church, plenty of pews. Good music and fine pastor. Great place for vacationing Catholic Familys.
We attended daily mass and Sunday mass at HR whenever were at OBX. Love this church and the pastors are wonderful. Homilies are profound and meaningful. Stations of the Cross are gorgeous! Come, worship, and leave in peace and tranquility.
Wonderful Catholic church at Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Big and friendly
Friendly with lots of mass options.
Beautiful church and wonderful service
I was so impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the locals at this church. My Mom is 85 years old, and it was one of the hottest days of the year. We left Yorktown, VA and managed to make it in time for Mass, but I was afraid to leave all of our items in the hot car, so a huge shout out to Billy for helping my Mom by sitting her next to his wife Ginger. I felt at ease to do some errands, knowing that my sweet Mother was in great hands. Mom will be sending a donation. I HIGHLY recommend this Church.
Excellent Service. The priest didnt give a homily in the literal sense but rather intimated the congregation about the context of each reading before it was read. The choir was composed mostly of elderly people with youthful energy. I look forward to visiting Holy Redemeer the next time I come to tge outer banks
This is our first vacation to the Outer Banks and first time attending Mass at Holy Redeemer. We cant wait to go again! I loved the way Father talked to the congregation and spoke and explained each Reading Before it was read. What a fantastic teacher he is. I wish all parishes were like this one.
Always an uplifting service. I look forward to attending mass at Holy Redeemer every time I vacation at the Outer Banks with my family.
Not the Catholic service Im used to. It felt like high school musical. Just letting you know before you get in there. They did have kneelers so that was good and Father seemed very huggable and warm.
