Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area - Hunting area in Tijuana, Mexico
My absolute favorite goingy spot in SD. Took the pup out for our first hike there together. Small water features and dessert mountain terrain. Did the 5 mi loop
Perfect get a way place from the city. Beautiful unspoiled backcountry experience.
I pretty trail with rolling hills. Plenty of shade if you head right at the fork compared to left. If it rains youll have a nice creek to walk along. Theres plenty of friendly hikers as well.
Nice easy trial. A lot of green which is unusual for San Diego.
Pretty trail to mountain bike or hike through.
Always a great quick hike around the corner!
Best place to take a hike, especially in spring.
Alot less congested than local trails, bike, hikes...the sceneries beautiful some some shade here there
Well...If you like feeling like youre trespassing, but hate how the cops keep showing up when you do it to your neighbors...you..will love...this trail. That goes for the extended loop, anyway, which seems to course through someones cattle ranch before heading back into someones olive orchard. Its actual very picturesque and peaceful, despite staring at a gap in the barbed wire fence and wondering: "Really?"Basics: This extended loop takes you out though the Honey Springs Ranch area, out a set of side trails, and back into the Canyon. If youre going to do the loop, I recommend finishing through the canyon. It was spectacular this time of year (Januarywith the trees in red and green. This hike is intermittent hilltop chaparral and oak groves.Fee: There is a fee for the use of the California Wildlife Area. At the time it was $4.89 and was easily paid online without a sign-in (though personal information is required).Profile: There are no rock scrambles on the loop and only the mildest of climbs. A lot of the trail is groomed truck trail and is suitable for all levels of experience. The full loop might be a bit much, but you can tailor accordingly. I would call this "moderate."Water: During this time of year (JanuaryI carried several liters as a shakedown weight, but only drank about one. If you are so inclined and carrying a pack like I was, there are several spots to filter water, though they seem very seasonal.Weather: Obviously this is day by day, but today was very nice with the temperature ranging from 30-65. However, there was frost on the ground as late as 11 am due to the large hills and the low sun casting long-lasting shade. Carry a puffy or a jacket if you intend to hike before noon in the winter and are sensitive to cold.Wildlife: Saw a few deer who clearly saw me first, a few hawks and several small flocks of quail who scared the daylights out of me as they would stay completely silent and still in a bush until I was on top of them and would take off like a gunshot. There were minimal bugs at the time of my hike, mostly consisting of gnats, bees, and dragonflies. No bother to me.
Great hike, not too difficult.
what a wonderful place to adventure - recommend a daytrip here for all my fellow san diegans! Beautiful
Great place to hunt, but hikers dont wear orange for safety so beware.
Now one of my new favorite hiking areas in east San Diego (actually Jamul). Very peaceful. Very serene. A ton of vegetation changes, a hawk, a coyote and an easy 5 mile loop trail with only about 680ft of Elevation gain. Was well worth the $4.89 forest service fee one has to pay to use this area. Free if you bring a current CA fishing or hunting license. .
Great place to go hiking.
Long trail , nice views through a Cayon😊
Great riding experience 👌 watch the mole holes though
Great hike. Know that you need to buy a land pass to hike here. You can pay at the site if you have a phone handy with service.
This is a great place to hike and is easy enough for the whole family including the dog. Youll enjoy some amazing views of the valley and its so peaceful and quiet there. I highly recommend this trail to anyone.
Great hike! There are many trails, so I would use all trails map so you know where you are going. You also need a permit.
A wonderful place to hike. Seasonal. Summer would probably be rough and not nearly as scenic.
Enjoyed the hike. Kid friendly. Uphill and downhill give you a good workout. In march, the meadows were green.
This place is gorgeous and did not have one single piece of litter on the trail. I intend to return soon! I recommend downloading all trails if you’re new to hiking.
Nice hike with many offshoots, but easy to follow the main trail. Went 4 days after a rain and there waa water in the creeks and crayfish in the pools right off the trail. Rocks for kids to climb, but watch for poison ivy. Easy hike for getting the kids out in nature.
Loved this 6 mile loop hike. Great views and beautiful scenery.
What an amazing place to hike. Depending on the route you choose, this is a great place for kids and families to explore. There are many different trails to choose from, some with shade and water, some completely exposed grasslands and mountain views. We enjoyed an approximate seven mile loop. Trails, at times, can be very steep. The climbs are shorter and steeper because most of the trails are old cattle ranching/fire roads. Highly recommend hike for cooler weather.
Beautiful place to take a walk or go trail riding. Great for kids and dogs too.
Found plenty of adventurous spots exploring the trails on bike. Awesome views all around, revisit worthy insta @orbshuttle
Great for long hikes. Biking gets extreme on some areas but very enjoyable. Awesome views!
A beautiful, 4.6 mile loop trail. Remember that a land use permit (or fishing or hunting licensewill be required again once the COVID-19 exception is lifted.
I will never EVER get tired of coming here. They did recently impose a fee of $5 or so per person per day, so be prepared with that before visiting. While there, you can walk/hike through so many different areas and the views change with every season. In September, I saw coyotes and bats. In the spring, there are bountiful wild flowers and a stream, which includes a waterfall. Youre just far enough outside of town to feel like youre truly getting away. Whether you come for an hour or you come all day, theres a lot to enjoy!
Nice little hike in the East County back country. Cool oak trees and a creek during the rainy season.
Didnt get to really enjoy it yet, because you need a land pass to go hiking but for $26 for a year to use any of the hiking areas that require one isnt bad. And there is fishing and hunting in the area
Great views. You can follow the moderately difficult trail or you can make your own. Great views and wildlife along the way.
Beautiful area. You need the Land Pass to hike here, but its definitely worth it!
Great trail, clean, shaded, a good amount of difficultly in some parts. There is a stream running through post rain. Dogs allowed on leash.
I would just like to highlight that this is a HUNTING AREA. I have come here a few times to hunt and gotten dirty looks for hunting in a HUNTING AREA. Just thought I would highlight that because no one appeared to actually know that hunters even exist in SoCal. Other than that its an okay place with some spectacular scenery. The best part of this area is how close it is.And yes you need a class C wildlife area permit OR an active hunting license to use this area.
Very nice 4 Mile out and back hike. Scenic. Good birding. Look on the internet because you might need a special pass now
Great place to go clear your head and get lost for a few hours. Nice rolling easy walk unless you want to go off the beaten path. Please! Pick up your dog poop! We all want to enjoy this space.
Beautiful place for a springtime walk. Gentle trails with a running stream and shade. Lots of green. And wildflowers in late March after a rainy season. Probably be pretty hot come summer. There is a port-a-potty in the parking lot but not a trash can to be found.
This is right out of a Tokien novel. Beautiful rolling hills with a rippling Brook. Its one of my favorite hikes. Great picnic spot. Be aware of snakes.
A lil deceptive in the beginning looks like youll be exposed in the sun the whole time. There are beautiful areas perfect for hiking, running, Mt bike riding, photo,or wilderness junkies what have you. After the all the trees and creeks it gets even better when you come back down the loop. A real gem close by not really to far to drive out to. Bit of foot traffic but really nice people.
For the area, this is my favorite place to walk in nature! Rattle snakes in rock quarries. You will be fine if you stay on the trail!
Beautiful hike! Reminds me of the shire!
Great place for Mountain biking and hiking. Go early to beat the heat! Bring lots of water
Nice overall for horse riding, mountain bike rides, running or hiking. Watch out for the snakes 🤤
Great place for hikes and bike rides. Mostly easy trails, good scenery and free parking at the trailhead
Amazing Trail. Surprisingly lush considering its in the middle of a desert. There is even a year round, spring fed creek that makes it very pretty. The desert gets cold at night, so bring a jacket if its late in the day. Also, BRING WATER! There is No drinkable water along the Trail (or bathrooms). My dog drank from the spring, but I wouldnt recommend that for humans as youd most likely get sick. Beautiful hike, though and cell phone service the whole way.
The best for pictures! Always love to take a family out here..depeding on the time of the year...beautiful colors throughout Spring and Summer! - Artsy Chick Photography
Great place to take a family. Great views. Good mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and nature watching opportunities.
Mostly flat trail of you want to make it a short out and back hike. You can easily make it a long, all day loop hike of you wanted to. Watch out for wildlife, those signs are there for a reason!
