Hochosterwitz 1, 9314 Launsdorf, Austria, Klagenfurt
Fortified hilltop medieval castle with 14 gates, an armory, Renaissance paintings & cultural events.
Great views, but mediocre experience. You are forced to exit through two gift shops. The museum is extremely light on details and includes strangely modern paintings that dont fit. The food smells like old fryer oil
Picturesque views, cafe is inside)
It was a really nice casual hike up to the castle. The whole experience is worth of the entrance fee, the castle is very pretty, well kept, the museum nice. Check out the small garden as well!We would recommend to walk up the way, it seems like a steep way up, but is comfortable with many stops in between.
A great place to visit, its rougher and more raw than I expected but it some ways that makes it more real too. The little garden is lovely and tranquil.
Amazing place! Interesting castle intp wonderful nature
The room was fine, but it is not near the airport. I had to pay 18.50 euros to get to the airport on the shuttle. Did not know that the shuttle had to be booked ahead to get from the airport to the hotel. We had to take a cab.
Castle looks awesome, but 17Eur entry is a bit too high considering that museum inside is for 10min.
Its a nice fort/castle IF you are near here. I have been to a lot of castles and this one was interesting because of the way it was set-up for fortifications.Lifts were down but we didnt mind.
The castle is amazing place even from afar. Unfortunately our arrival date the castle was closed, because before 1 day was a huge storm in Austria and the electricity didnt work in the castle. For us it wasnt a problem, but the castle was not open on that day. Next time we will go inside if its allowed. Were waiting for the opportunity. I upload some closer and further view of the castle, its worth to visit, its beautiful.
Without the Katintia card not worth 45 eur for the family of 4.Nice view im sure but not on a cloudy day.
Nice castle, about 20 min walking uphill.
Worth visiting. The museum is interesting, the restaurant offers tables outside and indoor. I understand they also organize weekends and dinners with shows. There is a souvenir shop up on the castle and a bigger one by the car park. Easy to find.
A must see in Karintia.Don’t be afraid of the highth the walk to the castle is only 20 minutes.
Well worth the visit. The climb up is ok, but if youre a sedentary person youre better off taking the elevator up. You can walk down, its a short walk and you get to see all the gatehouses. If you walk up instead of taking the elevator you can basically visit everything for free.Theres a really nice museum, lots of armor and weapons. The restaurant upstairs looks to serve good food. Didnt eat anything, but what others were being served looked great.
Good cardio workout. One hour and we almost completed to the top of the castle. 1.5 to 2hrs will be better not so rushed. The view is awesome the higher you go. Trail is pebbled and sometimes rocky. Best to watch your step as you walk along. Sports or good walking shoes recommended. There is an elevator option for the descent. You may buy the ticket at the entrance or pay 6€ at the shop when you come down. All the proceeds go to the maintenance and upkeep of the castle.
Great castle from the outside-probably the most impressive in the whole of Austria. You can see it from far and the views around are just epic. Unfortunately, we didnt go inside as they close quite early (16:30and we arrive just a few minutes after closing.
The nice place for a family walk and time together.Picturesque landscapes:-)
Good experience, view is beautiful. Its not worth choosing the elevator, its an easy walk up. There is a little museum about the owners family, a chapel and nice flowers everywhere.
Very beautiful....I like so much....
A castle on high rocks. It can be reached by cable or on foot. Admission is paid at the foot of the hill, without it, you will only watch the castle from afar. Up there is a museum. Unfortunately, the exhibits are without proper content explanation, very mixed in time and what is described is mostly in German, some small content is in English. I must say that I have not seen the history of the castle described anywhere. I miss the historical account or at least the description of life at such a castle.14 defense gates have technical sketches, but even these are without proper descriptions. So, if a traveler wants to know anything detailed about the castle, he should learn about it himself, on Wikipedia. However, I can conclude that the castle itself is worth a visit, because of the castle itself.
Its a very nice castle, and definately worth to see it.Just the price for the entrance is over the top, if you take in account how small the Museum is. Also the elevator ticket is not included in this steep ticket price. That is why it doesnt merit 5stars for me.
Amazing medieval castle. I sugest you take the ride up and walk back down to cross all if the 14 gates. Also the garlic soup the restaurant in the courtyard provides is fantastic!
26 euros to get to the top via Elevator. Very excellent fairy tale castle with lots of gatehouses and battlements. A beautiful flower garden and a restaurant, but not a lot to do once you get there. There was a guide you could download on your phone but I didnt have phone signal at the castle. Guest wifi would be a nice cost effective touch. This castle is still family owned and that is pretty cool the slightly higher entry fee doubtless helps to make up for the lack of public funding.
In autumn the colors around the area of the castle are just magic. The castle in the background makes the ambient look absolutely stunning.
An old place to spent some time. Interesting place, from bottom to the top you can walk for 20-25 minutes or you can take the panoramic elevator. The cost for this is 9 euro two way ticket. There is also the possibility to buy only one way from top to the base.
Nice castle, there is museum inside the castle. Open air restaurant and bathroom are available as well. You could go up with elvator or just walk. The view from the top is priceless.
This castle is just sublime. If you are in the region you definitely need to go visit it. If you can: go up by foot, the way up is really beautiful and an important part of the experience. We went during the afternoon and we were almost alone.
We paid 21 euros/person (including lift). If you are near klagenfurt or worthersee area in general id recommend going if you are willing to pay. Also do some pit stops before the castle to get a panoramic view of the castle and some reaally awesome pics
Very beautiful view. Great museum. Very nice walk. The lifts are too expensive for a 20 minute walk.
A wonderful place to experience a very intact medieval castle. You are walking up a path through all the different gates while also enjoying the view over the valley. The restaurant on top has moderate prices, good quality and fits to the whole experience. Do not forget to visit the museum and say hello to 2,25m tall Burghauptmann Schenk.
Beautiful and very well preserved castle with the most amazing views of the entire zone. If you visit, I recommend you take the elevator up and the scenic route down, to see the 14 doors and admire the surrounding valley.
Such a beautiful castle. We enjoyed it a lot. You can take the lift to the top of the castle where the view is breathtaking. We visited the museum which is great! Then we took the foot path down to the bottom and it was such a great walk.
We visited Burg Hochosterwitz today, we enjoyed it very much.... here a glimpse of our visit!
Very nice castel, lots of parking spaces at the base, you can walk up to or or take a lift, but its way more beatiful to walk around it.
Very great ancient place to watch. You can go up with a lift, or have a ~20 min walk up the hill- and went though the different historical doors. For me it was quite impressive to see and read about the defense mechanisms and their strategies. In top of the go is the castle with an museum and a really great view over the landscape. It was really an enjoyable day.
It is one of the most interesting castle that I have seen in Austria. It is worth to go by foot up the mountain and in the end you can reward yourself with some amazing food at the restaurant situated in the interior yard of he castle.Defenetly a "must see"!
Very good castle. Slightly expensive for 15 € entry, but it does include the museum. Great views as well!
Majestic castle worth of visiting! Great location for a Sunday trip.
This place is ok, but a bit expensive for the experience. Parking is also challenging, you have to arrive early in the morning. You can walk up to the top of the castle (possible with a Oran alsofor 15 euros. That’s an easy 15’ walk with some stops if you need to rest. For 9 extra euros, you can take a lift and this is not worth it. I deed, on the way to the top there is all the best things to see (gates, views, garden, church,...).At the top there is an average restaurant. I suggest you take your picnic bag !
The castle is really pretty, you can either hike to the top or take a escalator but you gotta pay extra if you take it. Theres a beautiful garden there as well, museum w a tour guide, church, few shops with handmade things, restaurant etc.I would say it was worth visiting.
The castle with its walls and monumental gates extends over the whole rocky hill. Its a long walk up but there is a nice modern glass sided elevator as a superior shortcut. The guide is very competent and friendly.
A little bit dissapointing that big part of the castle is restaurant. Dispite this it is very nice castle, recommend not to go by lift because go up is part of the castle.
Nice view, but definitely not worth the steep price (€25 per person including lift ride). One small exposition, without a real tour of the castle buildings, and a souvenir shop.
Honestly not so interesting. There is one exposition and a gift shop. Nice place to eat. We went there when it was almost raining and it was not worth it
Very nice castle to visit, with magnificent views. In the centre of the castle you are able to eat and drink some, the prices arent that bad.
Very beatiful place, must see old castle and check its history, owned by the same family for centuries, beatiful surronding especially in summer
The entrance costs me 15 euros. The topmost portion of the castle is a restaurant. There is nothing so special about this castle but the view is beautiful from there. You can also take the lift but I highly suggest that you just walk up.
Beautiful castle! Has a restaurant at the top with everything you need! The view is great everytime we visit. Update 2018: the elevator is ready and easy to use-costs 9€ /person, but the nicest part is the walking, so if you are not in a hurry, I reccomend that.
Great medieval and heavily fortified castle! Wonderful vista over the whole region. Interesting exhibits in the museum. The Burgschenke restaurant offers good choices at surprisingly fair prices. During our visit a local band played Austrian folk music. A "must see" if youre visiting the region. The lift is extremely ugly but makes access for elderly and handicapped people possible - so minus one star for the optics, but plus one star for not excluding anyone. ;-)
Impressive castle with 14 gates, each different. Great views! Interesting museum and nice restaurant at the top with a vegan option on the menu. Recommended for the whole family!
