Historic Daydream Mine - Tourist attraction in Broken Hill, Australia
Truly amazing tour of the underground mine. Our guide was a great story teller, great gift shop and that was the first time I’d ever cream with my coffee, I’m sold on it now. Loved the scones as well ❤️
Definitely one of the highlights of the Broken Hill / Silverton region. If you are making the trek to the middle of nowhere you should book in advance and go. Informative and educational by the tour guides and well worth the time.
Did not get to do the tour as i was a bit late. But the area is so desolate but upto 500 people lived there mining. It had 2 pubs.
Great experience. Enormous respect to the miners of the past, once you see how they worked, which is especially reflected in the way the tour is conducted.
This is a must do experience if you are travelling to silverton. Takes you back in time to experience how it would of been for the miners in the early days . Great for all the family as long as your ok in confined spaces for dome of the time. Set amongst the beautiful Barrier Rangers. Also the scones and jam are the best after the tour. With a large range of souvenirs and rocks and crystals for sale. Would highly recommend this place to visit . this is the real Australia out here this is a true Aussie experience.
This was an unplanned stop for us but boy are glad we came!Angus took us on a tour of the underground mine and it was the most authentic mine tour we have done. There were steps, lots of bending down and knocking out helmets on the ceiling, but it was well worth it.Angus explained how things were ‘back in the day’ and was very informative.Scones and a hot cuppa at the end were also appreciated.
We enjoyed our visit & staff were lovely. We were too late for the underground tour but the surface tour was really interesting.
And you thought your work conditions were hard. Knowledgeable interactive, thought provoking. Do it, but only if you are without crook hips, knees or get short of breath with exercise. And definitely get the scones, jam and cream for afterwards,,, mmmmmmm.
Great tour. Delicious scones awesome 🍵 tea.
This is no Disney tour. It is rough, raw, confronting (hearing about the plight of the largely Cornish miners - including childrenbut without doubt the best mine tour Ive ever done. Highly recommended, but it does get a bit cramped down there.
We really enjoyed the tour. A very authentic experience of what a miner endured in their underground working life, and life in general.Good walking shoes needed and a willingness for a bit of adventure to descend into the mine. A very tall person will need to bend a bit on the way down, though worth the effort. Our guide Rob was very informative as a previous miner himself and readily answered all questions. Thanks Rob.Lovely fresh Scones and tea afterwards were very good value for money and finished our time off well.We purchased a few interesting souvenirs from the on-site office including some mineral samples etc and left happy from time well spent. It was explained to us this is a mining lease site and therefore operates under those necessary guidelines.A phone call to check tour times and booking is essential. Well done. Glad we made the effort.
We arrived at this place, to check it out, and the sign out the front said that it had tours on at 2pm, so we thought yeah, we’d be right. However once we got to the building after driving 30 minutes mind you, the man said rather rudely that they didn’t have tours on at 2, and the tours were priced a lot none the less, but I’m just annoyed that they were falsely advertising stuff which wasn’t true. We also tried to buy some souvenirs there and they didn’t have any even though they were advertised. Definitely head out there if you are prepared to spend $33 dollars per person, but if not, I don’t think it’s worth a visit
The surface and underground tour itself was good. Mark was very amiable and full of knowledge. A good tour guide. Time was made for everyone to ask questions and see all the interest points. The pre-ordered after-tour scones were disappointing as they were supermarket bought, cold, and not freshly handmade Cornish scones as had been lead to believe. Coffee was instant with powdered milk. A bit trashy kind of tearoom/service counter. Could be marketed a lot better.Be aware the drive in from the main road is about 12km of dirt undulated road. Allow time for this when booking.
Booked for the whole family to explore the Day Dream Mine. Highly recommended if you love history and exploring the outback. The tour was incredibly informative and we enjoyed every part of the experience. Make sure you order some tea, coffee and scones for after the tour.
We arrived just as a large group was departing. Appeared they were in a heated discussion with the host who was photographing one of their car. Not sure what we missed, but believe they were upset that you had to book tour to visit the mine.We also drove up thinking we could visit and didn’t know you HAVE to book a tour to do the tour. You can’t even walk about the site.We didn’t get the full story from the group, but understand the exchange with the host wasn’t pleasant. Maybe lucky we didn’t do the tour. After meeting a few locals at Silverton pub, heard we are one of many to drive up and turn around again. We didn’t feel so silly afterwards and read many other reviews with the same frustration. The sign should have additional text stating that due to mine conditions, you can ONLY visit the mine if on tour times, otherwise non-tour visits are not possible. Not the first time we have found this with attractions in regional Australia.
A group of us arrived to find you can only walk the mine track or visit the mine if on a tour. No tour, no visit. Period.Would be nice if road signage was clear you HAVE to take the tour. Met by one of the rudest host we have ever met in tourism who turned us away without even an ounce of empathy for the trip up and back we had made. Oh, 15mins each way. No way, more like 25.We asked since we were here, could we just do the walk. Response. “We are closed, didn’t you read the sigh” Folded arms, turn away and walked off.We can’t talk about the tour, but if she is the standard, no thanks. Seven vehicles drove back down shocked at her treatment. We checked the signs again. Nothing about having to book tour to visit. It just advertises tour times. Like many venues around Australia, you can visit and chose tour or no tour. Not here it appears. And you get rude service as well. Bonus. Made us chuckle when we met a tourism operator in Silverton complaining tourist aren’t spending. We had to turn away to stop him seeing us laugh.
Great tour. Larry was a good guide. Could do with more info on their website about having to sign in.
We had such a brilliant time here at Daydream Mine! The guide and the others here were super friendly and shared a lot about the mine and history. They were very welcoming of our two daughters. We loved both above and below ground aspects of the tour.My recommendation is to visit the bathroom BEFORE you go on the tour... once below ground, its not fun having to get up to the top then walk the distance to the toilet!
Excellent, authentic old mine tour. Lots of history and information on how miners lived and worked back in the early days of mining in Broken Hill. Kevin is a great fair dinkum guide who’ll make sure you get a good feel for the life of an early outback Australian miner. Highly recommend this place. And make sure you get your scones.
Great scones at the completion of our tour, very informative owner, slash , guide. Be aware of you are tall, low ceilings in some places in the mine. Also a lot of stairs for the elderly . Highly recommended
The area is gorgeous and the tour fascinating! Definitely not for people with mobility issues or claustrophobia, but its incredible getting to see the real conditions people worked in when the mine was in operation. Everyone there is really friendly and lots of neat things to buy in the gift shop
We enjoyed the mine tour and the scones. The whole thing had a nice old world feel and thats as it should be. Kevin was our guide and he was a real character with a great sense of humour. Good on him, we enjoyed it all.
Awesome experience… gives a sneak peak into day of miners life.. knowledgeable guide who shares a lot of information about the mining, tools, different kinds of ores available, how miners work and communicate and how ways of mining improved over a period of time. The tour is approximately for an hour. So be prepared with snacks, water and sun smart. Comfortable shoes for walking are highly recommended… good tour for school aged kids and works well if toddlers are cooperative 😉 the cafe / reception/office sells freshly made scones and native fruit jams… worth a try… the office room also features a lot of history… over all great experience and definitely recommended.
Nightmare plus. Dont waste your money here. Booked for a 10.30 tour then they rang back and asked if we could do the 11.30 tour. As we were already in Broken Hill, our mobile phones had gone the half hour back because they are on S.A time. So, arrived just before 11 and the woman who took our payment added it up on pen and paper and got it wrong. 1st red flag. when asked if the scones had dairy in them as I have an allergy to dairy, she was incredibly rude and laughed at my question. She informed us there was a coach coming and we had to wait for it. The tea rooms need an upgrade, the staff need better customer service and the prices were astronomical. We were still waiting by 12pm for the coach to arrive, second red flag. Waited til 12.15pm before the tour actually started, the young lad who did the tour was unprofessional, bad mannered and gave the impression he didnt want to be there. The information provided was lacking to say the least. Dont do the tour if your claustrophobic, or have a bad back or knees.
Arrived May 2021OMG the best experience. The hole thing, even the drive along the dirt road out there. Our Kia carnival went well. Really got us in the vibe of space, quietness and how hard times are out there now and way back.Staff where friendly and our tour guide was great. We went underground 30 meters. Some areas we had to duck our heads and as always going down is easy, coming back up we definitely got a sweat up.Loved every bit of it, Im glad I didnt wear a jumper. With covid our helmet was sprayed and needed to wear a mask which took awhile to get use to.Take your time to look and draw the air in and you need to have scones and a cuppa. Yum
There is so much cool history here and our guide was full of knowledge! We went on a Sunday which did have a 20% surcharge. They have collected a lot of original mining items to put on display both original to this mine and from elsewhere. You start above ground and do a little walk around with commentary followed by putting on the hard hat to explore the dark tunnels below! You do have to pay extra for scones and a beverage which was all homemade.“Jonique Life”Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.
We were too late for the underground mine tour however did the above ground tour which was good. $10pp. We were strongly encouraged to enjoy scones and a cuppa afterwards so paid for that at the same time. Unfortunately they didnt have scones left so we were offered fruit cake instead. 2 X instant coffees, 2 X cups of tea and 2 slices of fruit cake cost $37.50!!! Im all for supporting businesses but that was highway robbery. The Gentleman who did the tour was lovely and friendly, unfortunately we cant say the same for the tearoom lady. Highly recommended the tour but dont waste your money in the tea room.
Great experience!Really interesting to go down into the mine and see how things actually were!Scones & tea after the tour hit the spot!
So glad we took the time to do this tour - Rita and Trevor were very friendly, helpful and gave us an excellent tour of the mines and fed us with homemade scones. It was exactly what we hoped for, historical information, meeting locals and seeing something truly spectacular. Because the tours are given as required - we did wait a little bit longer than we had though before the tour actually started, but this is a small price to pay for what we got. 💯 Recommend!
A must experience if you are in broken Hill, tour includes underground tunnel walks. Learning how miners does it back in the old days and how tough it was. And when you go back up, the hot scones with jam and cream will be waiting.
Great tour, well preserved mine and knowledgeable guide, not forgetting the yummy scones - great finishing touch at the end of the tour!
Great experience. Tour guide is very informative. Can feel the hardship of the miners a century ago. Caution: road becomes terrible after highway.
The underground tour is not for all as large steps. Scones were amazing!
Such a great experience visiting this mine. Some parts are tight space so be aware if you’re claustrophobic. Other than that, really informative and great history of mining days. And as what everyone said, the scones are to die for! The best I’ve eaten to date.
You actually get to go down in a real under ground mine. The access to this place from main road is through an unsealed road which is ok to be driven by any car when not wet.The scones with cream and jam are awesome, which you can order while buying the mine tour ticket.
Interesting place, busy so bit of a wait due to middle of school holidays with Covid interstate travel but happy to see business doing well in regional area. Would have liked to see and here a bit more about the minerals and metals in the area, and a bit more focus on silver ore. Marked down as I also felt expensive, overall good half day out
What an Amazing Tour.... Kevin was awesome and Maggies freshly made scones are too die for..
Very interesting tour of the old mines. Tour guide had a very "interesting" character which certainly added a bit to the tour. I would highly recommend checking out if you are in the broken hill or silverton area. Warning: the underground tour can be quite claustrophobic in places.
The Boss Kevin is quite a character. Listen carefully! Old, authentic old mine.Delicious scones too- extra charge.
Fantastic mine tour. Kevin was a wealth of historical info and Beth made the best scones weve eaten to date! Amazing how early settlers saw the potential of this land.
Stunning, amazing, what amazing tour, the guy who ran it was a true Australian legend, he had so much information about the mine and the area couldnt believe the condition the miners went through, an easy 5 star definitely recommend it
Fantastic tour topside and underground. It gave us a real feeling for what it would have been like to work in the mine in the 1880s and the hardships they must have encountered. Our tour guide was really fun and entertaining. And I must not forget to mention the scones afterwards ... they were beautiful. A must do.There are two tours a day - make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there on time as the road in is a little rough and there are a few gates. Still ok for a normal car though.
Some distance off the main Silverton road, but its worth making the effort. Remind Tiller is very interesting be prepared for steep steps down and up but there is lots to see and we had a very good guide.
This was by far the highlight of our trip. Beth, our guide was very personable and friendly and we learned a lot about the area and the mine’s history. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to visit Broken Hill and Silverton. The scones with jam and cream were a great treat after our mine tour.
This place is a must, awesome tour and hot scones to die for. The staff wwere so friendly I was sad to leave. The historical value of this place is priceless.
a highlight of the broken hill and Silverton area. the drive out is sensational. at the mine they have some of the best scores ever made once you finish the tour. plus you can go underground and see conditions from the 1890s .. a mus
Definitely a worthwhile experience when in Broken Hill. Loved hearing about the early mining techniques and conditions. Especially enjoyed the underground tour and the Scones and hot Milo afterwards were perfect since it was a really windy and cool day when we visited.
Awesome day out! Id have been pretty happy with just the drive out but the tour and scones were the cream on the....scones.Great place to dispose of your old cookies...
Lots of early silver and lead mining history that was well explained by local miner and guide Jeff. The coffee and scones were excellent and cooked whilst you participate in the above and below ground tour. All ages can participate.
Great place to learn about miners and old mining methods. Dont forget to stay for tea and home made scones after the tour (costs extra)
