Hippodrome - Historical landmark in Al Mafraq, Jordan
A remarkable sight to visit. It has classical Roman like structures all around and being there is inspiring to look for more. Make sure to visit it when less crowd is there, otherwise you arent able to take clear pictures. We visited this sight on a week-day and there werent many people around.

The entire complex is great!! Coming in the arch of Adrien is nice but has nothing exceptional but the succession of monuments, the surface of the entire site really gives a sense of how great of a builder our ancestors were! The site has little shade, you can buy water on site so you don’t need to take too much water but the deeper you get on the site, the more expansive the water gets (up to 1.5 Jordan dollars for a small bottle). This is nonetheless worth it as you’ll see great ancient cities buildings you didn’t expect to find in Jordan! Plan for 3/4 hours on site as you go from one discovery to another. The kids had a lot of fun going through the ruins as in Jordan they benefit from a lot of freedom in what they can experiment!!!!
Very well preserved Hippodrome. It is the smallest in the ancient Roman world but it is still quite large.
Well preserved ancient racetrack.
They say its the smallest hippodrome in the world... looks quite big to me, no?
Very nice historical site
Nice Historical site
Cool show
This big arena for chariot race can be seen just after you pass the arch of hadrian. Both inside and outside of the arena is good to take many memorable photos. It says over 15,000 ppls can watch the races at that time. But now only one side is rebuild as original. I went up of the spectators seating area, i could see all over the race track. Its great view.
One of the most well preserved hippodromes of the Roman Empire. Incredible!
Hippodrome. Most of the ancient Roman cities, invariably had a hippodrome and a amphitheatre for public entertainment.Archaeological site of ancient Roman city of Gerasa, also had a Hippodrome for sports and chariot racecs.Remains of seating stands and turming post for chariot races at northern end of the hippodrome can be seen. Overgrown weeds along the seating stands and the turning posts incicate a bit of neglect. Littke effort putin to remove the weeds will give a better look to the site.Hippodrome is widely used as a short cut to go to other attractions further north thi has createrd a good footh path right through the moddel of Hippodrome.
Beautiful historical Roman architecture
Loved it
If you love arcahelogical site, youll love this place also. The history is interesting. Still inside the arcahelogical site of Jerash.
Majestic
Wonderful
Amazing to see the old race track still used. Its on the left when you enter through the walls
Great place
Very nice but hard to get back to amman if you dont want to pay to much for a cap
You will find the Hippodrome on your left just after moving under the impressive Arch of Hadrian. It was a horse hippodrome. They organize some kind of a theater there showing ancient fighting scenes, but you need to pay additional 20 JD entrance fee.
This is supposed to be one of the smallest Hippodromes in the world but its still quite big and grand. You can walk up the steps and take in the view. On both ends are Roman stables and shops with vaulted ceilings.
Fantastic!
Fine.
Wow, amazing what you see here...
What a fantastic place! It is very nice that you can still enter the hippodrome because there are not as many tourists as in Europe. Great history and a nice place to take your rest in the shadow!
The archeological site of Jerash is absolutely worth the visit when you are in Jordan. Not as famous as Petra, but close as beautiful!Bring a hat, water and sunlotion as the shade is sparse at the site. Start with the arch of Hadrian and walk to the hippodrome. Continue to the plaza and visit the theaters, nymphaeum and collonade. It is amazing. If you have the chance to visit in July, try to visit the Jerash festival! Highly recommended.
The smallest hippodrome on record in the Roman Empire and yet the best preserved/restored. The building was erected between 150-200 AD, and it was reused for different purposes after an earthquake made the hippodrome unstable for races at the second half of the fourth century. The damaged areas were then quarried and blocks were reused for the repairing of the city wall flanking the South Gate. The room across the Church of Marianos became the deacons house which has nice mosaic floor (see review images). Other rooms became pottery kilns and tombs. The earthquake of 748 AD brought all secondary industrial activity in the Hippodrome to an absolute end. After a long hiatus, the Roman legionary drill and gladiators fight that performs at this premises, seems to have returned. Morning show starts at 11 or 11:30 am and costs 12 JOD.You can enter the Hippodrome from the main eastern gate, turn right and walk through the arena exiting by the northern entrance. After that, you have to turn right to rejoin the main thoroughfare to proceed to the visitors center. There are toilets there.
Well represented history of this place through organized activities.
still being used for events
Interesting.
Just like athletic area. It may be very attractive when they have festival with horses with people in ancient clothes. Normal time, nothing.
There is not all that much left and 1 of the less impressive sites in Jerash but its right beside Hadrians arch and worth looking at.
The hippodrome is not in the beat shape, but it is amazing to know that they used to race on such a high track. It is sort of scary to think if the horse goes crazy you might fall of the hill. You can actually ride horses around the hippodrome to get the real Roman experience.
