Hip Hop Fish & Chicken in Woodlawn

We used Hip Hop for an after wedding brunch, gravy and chips were the perfect hangover cure for the guests. It was really tasty and everything ran super smoothly.

Funnily enough we visited here a year ago to the day and were served by the same lovely lady. Its incredibly refreshing to meet somebody so happy in their job, truly a credit to this place. I had put the food on a pedestal since our last visit and quite frankly I was a little worried it may not be quite as good as I remembered but it exceeded expectations once again.Staff 10/10Food 10/10Atmosphere 10/10

The best Halloumi and chips Ive ever had..and Im a fussy eater. Top class service and excellent food. If you could give a Michalin star to a chip shop then this would be the one to receive it. 10 out of 10

Updated for 2022, my fave jerk fish is gone but the Massala Fish was still really good and the chips really tasty! Portions still big and good value for money.Great food and friendly staff. Loved my jerk battered fish & plantain, mushy pea fritters were also really tasty dipped in gravy. Shame we ordered a bit too much food and couldnt quite finish it! Will definately be back.

Notwithstanding the lovely welcome, super helpful team. amazing value and close to perfect food - my Masala Fish butty was the best fish and chip butty Ive ever eaten - Its worth the visit just to be able to say youve eaten at the Hip Hop Chip Shop!

Oh. My. Gosh. By far the best fish and chips Ive ever had. Recommend by a local, my AirBnB host, who gladly ate my leftovers. Yes, this place is hip hop themed, lol. I thought it just had a silly name until I walked in, duhh. Super nice people here. Beer selection is great. I had the British equivalent of cheese sticks...starts with a "k" I think. Portions are massive. Dont miss it!

Had a great time at hip hop chip chop. We tried their new addition- Bklyn masala fish, which I didnt find on their menu a couple of years ago. Its basically fish fried with curry sauce filling and chips. It is served with raita and its full of flavour. One of the best fish and chips Ive had.

The Hip Hop Chip Shop catered for our wedding in May. It was a HUGE hit with all of our guests! In the busy wedding season of 2022, I think ours will be remembered as the one with the best fish and chips ever.

This is definitely not your usual chippy. It’s an out-of-the-ordinary place where courtesy meets delicious meals, paired with honest prices.The staff was incredibly friendly and welcomed us from the first moment we stepped in. The service was fast.We ordered a fish and chips and a sausage and chips. Despite I am not a big fan of mushy peas, I can tell you I loved theirs. They were not the usual out-of-the-can mushy peas; these were freshly made and tasted like heaven. The fish in itself was god but it was served in an unconventional way, which I personally loved. The skin-on chips were also good, but they were slightly overcooked and, therefore, crunchy. Even ketchup and mayo seemed homemade and in my opinion absolutely delicious.I appreciate some people may be disappointed of how the fish is served, etc. but I think they took a traditional dish to the next level…and it simply worked!I definitely recommend you visiting this place. As for me, I’m just planning my next visit!!!

You don’t have to like hip hop to enjoy this restaurant, but if you do your in for double the surprise!We happened upon this restaurant while exploring Manchester and I’m so glad we did! The flavor of the fish and chips was extraordinary! So delicious! And the portion was huge. My husband and I split one order and an order of the Halloumi. If I could give more than 5 stars I would, in a heartbeat.The icing on the cake was the restaurant’s decor. From the choice of what was on the TV to the prints in the bathroom and the restaurant walls, so much eye candy.

What a great chippy. The battered halloumi is amazing. Gravy to die for and curry sauce to match. Staff really friendly. Def worth a visit

Great place , wonderful folk! However the food came out dripping in oil. Which we reckon was because the oil wasn’t hot enough. Pity tho , menu is great!!!!

Genuine 5 stars. Perfection. Had the bklyn masala and a mix of the fish + halloumi plus the jalapeño and gherkins. Everything from the above to the chip shop curry sauce to the raita and mango chutney and beers + service was great. Zero complaints. Also good music. If I could I would have this very very regularly.

They chose a theme and ran with it and its just a great place to chill, well worth the walk from the city centre in the rain, beautiful fish and those fried gherkins 🥒 portions are crazy so bring a take away box 👌

I don’t know how to explain how sublime this place is. Sometimes I dream about the mushy pea fritters and nothing else will suffice. This is a dangerously good place. Sometimes you will also dream about their food in the future also.

The hotel recommended this place as the "best fish & chips in town" and they were right.We got there at 8pm - a small place but the music was great, the guys awesome and the 2 dishes we ordered were just superb. We had the customary Fish & Chips and Beef & Onion Pie.

Nice atmosphere inside, really quite cosy, not my favourite music, but it did the job. He staff were accommodating when I wanted to not have the chilli batter or the curry sauce, so they swapped it out. Nice food, wasn’t so keen on the chips, but not a deal breaker. One of the other members in my party’s fish was a bit overdone, but again not the end of the world. Nice cream soda too, good variety of drinks.

I was in Manchester for the day and this lovely joint appeared on my radar. The concept was curious and the food choice was certainly attention grabbing.Upon arriving I was warmly greeted by a charming member of staff(who also happened to be from Londonand he laughed off the fact that we were very late for our reservation. The establishment is adorned with classic 90s Hip Hop memorabilia, which this 80s kid(kid? Ha!appreciated very much. From magazines, posters and even giant cassette decals on display on the windows. All damn cool. It also featured some modern performers, like Open Mike Eagle. These guys know their Hip Hop. But what they knew even more was their damn food.I can unequivocally say without hesitation that it was one of the best meals I’ve had in the past year. It elevates the humble chippy experience to, dare I say, gourmet levels? However it does this without an ounce of pretentiousness nor the price that would be associated. It shows passion, care and a strong understanding of breaking the rules to make something wholly unique and delicious.I loved every bite and really enjoyed myself. From the atmosphere, the cool staff and of course, the food.My wife and I jokingly said that we would consider driving from London again JUST to have this again.We also demanded to the staff that they bring this experience over to London. We want AND need it.

Such a ridiculously priced chip shop. The battered fish and battered halloumi are delicious, however, the portions are generally inconsistent. Sometimes 2, 3 or 4 pieces per serving. That can be annoying. £4 for a portion of chips is just plain crazy, and theyre not the best chips either (IMO- I wouldnt mind if the portion was big enough to share between two people, that would take the sting off the price. For decent chips (traditional), try Tonys down the road - now they are chips to shout about. But this is a completely different concept, so it seems unfair to compare.I guess, as were in Ancoats we have to accept stupidly priced food as the overheads are probably overwhelming for smaller independent businesses. Overall - I would recommend it, the staff are lovely, the environment is super laid back. I just wish the portions were a little more consistent and generous.

One of the best meals Ive ever eaten. Had vegan fish and chips and its the closest thing to fish Ive had since becoming veggie. Brilliant service, definitely try the honey rum! Great music too, now Im obsessed with hip hop. A must visit if youre in Manchester.

Accidentally stumbled upon this place on a trip to Manchester.Great vibes, great food. Such a unique and rare venue. Owners are really chilled out too. He gave us some bar suggestions for later that eve that played similar music.

My bf said that they sell the absolute best Halloumi here! It was unbelievably good and I can only recommend for people to come and eat here. The Ambiente is very cool and it lies in the heart of Manchester - the northern quarter! The name absolutely fits and the prices are very reasonable with a good menu displayed on their website. There’s something for everyone and paying a visit is definitely worth it if you are from Manchester or coming to visit. The staff working there are also very cool and kind so it is an overall nice atmosphere to be in. I would say the coolest part about this place is that they have different events and socials going on every now and then so you can enjoy your food and have an amazing time! Even though it is a chip shop they have plenty of vegetarian / vegan stuff, in fact, most of the menu is vegetarian or vegan. My recommendation is definitely “Halloumi, Myself and I”! Definitely worth the five star rating. :)

The best fish and chips I have ever had. They have found a gap in the market because traditional fish and chips are boring and the same in every city. I got the Bklyn masala fish and chips and every bite I took, I felt like I was in food euphoria.The owner is incredibly nice because we came in 15 minutes before closing time and they still served us (I didn’t check the closing times on the website at this point). The atmosphere is nice and chilled and at no point did I feel rushed to leave like you do in other restaurants when you’re they’re towards the end of closing time. It’s only after I realised.Fantastic food, great service and for someone who doesn’t even like fish and chips that much, if I lived in Manchester, this would be my local.This isn’t just a place to have delicious food but a fun evening out too with a great experience I’ll remember years to come.

Been there few times. Consistently good food and nice service.Portions are quite big, so for last few times just shared sides and actually always left full and satisfied.Tried fish, veggi and vegan options, all tasty and good quality food. Tried deep-fried banana blossom here for the first time and was really impressed.Music is always on top with hip-hop biggest hits, but not too loud, so can speak easily inside.

As a born and bred Mancunian I can honestly say this place is my favourite "chippy" Ive ever been to in town. Chippy does it a huge dis-service as its so much more, an eclectic, quirky, cool, relaxed place to enjoy a drink, great atmosphere and most importantly of all, the most incredible alternative takes on traditional northern English chip shop food. The Feastie Boys, Meat Junkie Butty and Ms Fat Butty are absolutely delicious washed down with a good selection of beers, especially bottled Red Stripe. The staff are great, always attentive, pleasant and the service is quick. I dont even particularly like hip hop music but that makes it more of an unusual experience and treat for me. Prices are very reasonable considering the large portions and quality of food too. Keep up the good work guys, Ill be back for a delicious lunch soon

This is the best fish and chips I have had, I go here a least once a month to collect my order since a year ago. Its just that little bit more special than any other place. The portions are very good and the tarta sauce is lovely aswell as the mushy peas. Really lovely place with nice staff. I would definitely recommend.

Such a lovely little restaurant, really cool inside and the food is unreal especially for the price! Me and my bf couldn’t believe how rich in flavour the food was. Absolutely amazing, special shout out to Tom as well for his service, really friendly and helpful! Will definitely be back again as as loved it all so much, massive 10/10!

Very good fish and chips. A little bit on the pricier end compared to it four years ago. Nevertheless, still delicious and good place to relax and unwind at night with friends. Happy hour is pretty good as well. Only little downside was that you had to pay 1 pound for the tartar sauce, but other than that; good good food

What a brilliant find! We stumbled across this place and what a fantastic venue this is. Genuinely the fish and chips sandwich was incredible! Lovely light batter, excellent fish and great chips. Another highlight was the wonderful service, really looked after us and were so friendly and helpful. Cocktails were also excellent! Would definitely recommend.

Delicious food and very friendly staff. The portions are huge! I had the banana blossom which was really tasty and very unusual. They have a really great selection of food and beer - they didnt have the beer I wanted but the staff were happy to recommend an alternative which was really good. Thanks for having us!

Our main debate was whether the light batter or the halloumi was the tastier part of the halloumi fries. The chips were excellent too. There was a broad selection of local craft beers. The service was both relaxed and attentive, even on a busy Saturday night. For a “chip shop”, the experience was sublime!

Spice chilli bites was really amazing! I fought portion will be smaller , such a surprise! Nice tasty,freshly made , staff very welcome and friendly (something that is not so often seen everywhere else because of covi... . Very large choice of meals and vegan dishes as well! If you are in Manchester This place is your next stop in city !

Very good fish and chips, decent size portions and well prepared.Not your typical old school fish and chips, this place is slightly more up market with fish biters, chips and mushy peas as standard. Again not the cheapest in the land but very good quality (and fillingwould recommend to a friend.Dine in and on delivery option (and available to pick up)

OMG what a find, didn’t intend on eating here but the places we had planned were full and I’m glad they were! Tastes like the chippy used to taste! And the music is amazing, drinks menu on point too with all the classics.My little girl loved it and is constantly asking to go back and see the Vimto and chips lady 🤣

I dont tend to throw around 5* reviews like many people do, I consider a 4* as a solid endorsement of a great meal, visit or service, so here I am giving 5 stars and, if Im honest, Id give 6 if I could.Background: I stumbled across The Hip Hop Chip Shop while wandering around Google Maps one day, Im a local guide, general nerd, food fan etc and, lets face it, the name is great. I saw it, I clicked, I liked what I saw. The problem is Im in Leeds, The Hip Hop Chip Shop isnt. So a plan was made and today, Sunday the 26th, we travelled over with the sole aim of lunch here.The risk paid off and then some.A warm welcome on arrival from incredibly friendly front of house staff and a really chilled out vibe from the unobtrusive chilled out music. We were seated quickly with menus at a table of our choice and then began the task of selecting from the extensive and varied menu.I went for one if the specials, the curry battered fish with massala chips, raita and mango chutney, a can of D&B and some battered pickles, my dining partner the chilli battered sausage with chips and curry sauce and some chilli onion rings.Wow!Everything was beyond expectations, firstly the service is fast, the portion sizes are incredibly generous and the taste... amazing. Those massala chips are a revelation, the curry fish something I should have had in my life years ago. Battered pickles, life changing. Everything else I tried couldnt be faulted. Every other dish leaving the kitchen also looked amazing.10 hours later as I write this Im still full, with food and fond memories, thank you, it was well worth the special trip over the hills.

An extremely enthusiastic two thumbs up for this place! Probably the best fish and chips we ever remember having. The fish was delicious and perfectly cooked. Chips the same. Mushy peas were great, service was excellent...friendly staff and reasonably priced. If we were here for longer we would definitely go back, highly recommend this establishment.

Superb little place to get some amazimgly fresh Fish and everything else that goes with it. Different options available and each one tasty. A no few beer options too in the tap and bottled. The service is excellent and friendly. Location in Ancoats is perfect too. Definitely among the best and will be back again.

Gorgeous. Make sure you come hungry. We had the £6.50 fish, chips and bap and couldnt finish it. The music was ace and the guy who served us was lovely. Highly recommended

Trendy fish and chip restaurant. Good menu, especially if you like fish but does have other things on there. Mushy peas fritter were excellent. Onion rings were huge. No room for dessert 🙄

Wanted to go to their permanent place after reading good reports from their popups over the last few months which I never found the time to get to. HUGE plates of food were too much for an afternoon meal but freshly cooked and well presented.Regular specials available.For what it is, slightly expensive but worth the visit. Wont be my only time visiting but also wont be a regular haunt for me.Must be great for the locals in the area but theres a severe lack of on-street parking for those planning to visit but thats the same for the area as a whole TBF.

Great food with good portions, we had the battered sausage, the fish and some battered halloumi. Food was great and very good value.We actually ordered two mains and two sides initially and the lady serving told us that might be a bit much and we might be better sharing one side and ordering more if needed. She was absolutely right as we were stuffed with just the one side.Restaurant is cosy with lots of old school hip hop paraphernalia on the walls and old school hip hop playing in the restaurant (obviously).This is definitely a step up from the old pop up in Spinningfields and well worth a visit. Well definitely be back to try more of the side dishes in the near future.

What a loverly place to find. The name says it all but they will have to add a few more errors as the food was brilliant. I just loved the fish and chips that I had and with a beer as well. What was there not to like. There are so many places to eat in Manchester and some of them are good, some of them are not so good and places like this that are so much better than you ever expected. I will be coming back here again and again. Well done.
