Old-school okazuya (side-dish shop) selling a variety of Japanese dishes for takeout.
okazuya style eatery. go early when they first open because they sell out fast. usually a line outside the door by 7am because everyone goes before work. parking is limited due to sharing with other businesses.
This place is a local favorite. It’s like a deli customized with Hawaii’s Japanese favorite foods(Okazuya style). A lot of people get a meal or a quick bite to eat because the prices are so affordable versus a traditional restaurant. The food is made daily hot and fresh. And just to note, there’s a minimal amount of seating. So take out is recommended. There’s lots of free parking, and you might want to Google map this place because it’s on a side street.
Super delicious food 🍱 but calories is high 😅
Great choices to make your own takeout plates! Very onolicious to eat in anywhere! Definitely going back for more in my beach outings!
Worth the wait! Korean Chicken was amazing and the cucumber salad was perfection! Two large portions for $20.
Ono food the best Okazuya in Hawaii. but expect long line.
Slow service. Long lines. Good sushi.
Service awsome!Im always with little food to chose from. My fault
This place was awesome definitely one of me favorite, it’s easy to share the food and great for long days on the road.
Great food!!! Lines, but moves fast.
Hilo girl, born and raised. Cant go home without stopping by. Nori Chicken, tofu party, corned beef patty, nishime, tofu salad, and ogo every time!
Their mac salad is like nice other! Yum-oh....
Such a great deal. Their prices are unbelievable, but get there early as the line gets long. So worth it though for the local and homemade taste.
best cone sushi and korean chicken and deep fried sweet potato along with all the other local favorites they offer huge portion best local okazuya on the big island
Super inexpensive food you get alot of bang for your buck
Let me tell you what, when we visit the ohana all the way from NY, this is a must for us every single time! Honestly better food here than in most places in NY! I love the atmosphere and just the smiling faces and happy people when we go there.
Food is awesome! No labels on the food so if you dont know what it is just point. Every thing I got was great.
Great for breakfast and lunch! Ala carte style, choose your favorite local comfort foods. A blast to the past and rare treat is being able to get the pickled ogo as a side. Good portions.
This is not an eat-in restaurant. It is a great place to grab some local food for lunch, gathering of the clan, or office party. You will probably order too much, because it all looks and smells delicious. Or grab something to eat when you go to the beach.
Great hole in the wall place. A ton of locals eating here. I had spam for the first time here!
I waited 15 minutes before entering their door. Unfortunately what I wanted to order was out. Bummer, so I left.
Cone sushi was flavorful and juicy. Shoyu chicken was tender and very tasty. Nori chicken was a bit dry. Gobo and warabi were great. Remember to be there by 11am to ensure you get all your choices.
One of the best places for okazu, been coming here for years and will be for years to come.
By far, one of our favorite places to pick up takeout food--okazuya style!! Their cone sushi is huge and tastes so good!! Maki sushi, egg foo young, fried chicken, Korean chicken, teriyaki beef, tempura veggies, sweet potato, and shrimp are so ono!! Still need to stop by for breakfast....next trip for sure!! The service staff are so helpful, upbeat, and efficient!! Mahalo nui loa!!
One of the best bento places. I always enjoy the tempura ono. Try to get there between 10AM to 12am before they run out of the favorite selections
One of the many places to stop for a bite on the local scene in Hilo. Rustic community of a time gone by. A summertime where the living is essy.
No dining area. Guest stand in line and order at counter. Arrive early, once items are gone thats all for the day.
Have come here since I was a kid. Best place for bento style food for field trips, beach trips, picnics, or just plain old bfast. I go every time I visit home and get the works for a reasonable price. Got my husband into it and now he looks forward to it whenever hes visiting with me. : Because of the price, we always get a lot to take home to share with my grandparents. Its best fresh but still delicious as leftovers. Im hungry all over again. Lol.
Their frozen pops, I believe are homemade,,very well worth it. Prices are good, they have a certain time when you can get great deals on their burgers, like a happy hour I believe..but soooooo worth the wait. Not too long, but as you can tell, they are a popular choice amongst locals
Incredible variety of Japanese inspired home cooking. I didn’t know what most things are and the woman was trying to be patient with me as the line of workers picking up lunch at 7a grew longer and longer. It’s 5 stars for providing a full box of homey food to our workforce for about $6.50. It’s cheaper than McD! My box lunch had soy sauce chicken, Spam musubi, stewed veg with chicken, fish cake, egg foo young. There were lots more choices but nothing is labeled and you have to decide quickly as people need to grab and get to work. Took the box and drove 2.5mi to a beach park and ate it there. Perfect!
Great food with even better prices! We had a plentiful breakfast for 3, just for 16 dollars. Definitely recommend to everyone the spam musubi and the nori chicken- two delicious foods. This place is located in a rather good spot, causing us to see a rainbow!Don’t worry, the place is very clean, but sometimes has a lil line.
Great food, even better prices. This plate was only 8 bucks. So ono
Their Ono and shrimp and musabis are my 3 favorite things to get here, and they always have friendly people behind serving the food.
I almost like it better here since social distancing became a thing. Its easier to ask what things are if youre curious but uninformed.Everything is delicious.
Living in Puna and driving downtown for work is rough. Hilo lunch shop takes some of the roughness out. I look forward to my Hilo lunch shop days. Best kalbi in Hilo I’ve had so far.
One of my favorite stops to pick up a plate lunch. They open early & close by 1pm. Usually closed on Mondays. My favorite is their cone sushi, spam musubi, egg fu yung, potato mac salad. Lots of choices for your plate lunch.
Beansprout stir fry is super salty, battered fried Ono is ONO, egg maki is delish, nori chix is too tough,, staff could use some Aloha spirit. Id still go back so for the Ono.
Hours of operation is 6:30a they didnt open the door until 6:37a, they assisted 2 people at a time which took 25-30mins. Very Sad, must take our business to Asamis or Kawamoto!
The food is excellent. There is always a line but it moves fast. You need to go early otherwise they might be out of your favorites. I love this place. I could eat here every day!
Limitless choices of the self-proclaimed filled bentos, made right before your eyes! Mouth-watering seafood, like shrimp and fish or baked chicken or even then, fried maybe even nori-wrapped sumptuously offered with the okazutyo of fresh island vegetables or American prepared macaroni salad. Delicious! Try it, it is great!
Food is always good. Its to go only which is great for the park is across the street. If you want local food this is where you go! Its not fancy but the food is great.
The person who served me had a bad attitude. I dont know what or why, but this was a second time that Ive been there and the last time I was there she gave me the same attitude. I know I was not disrespectful, and I always treat others the way I would want others to treat me. This bothered me, because my wife was there to see it and she asked me what happened. I should have had a talk with the manager, but my wife asked me not to. I was going to ask the person with the attitude, but she just placed my receipt and my 💳 on top of the counter top and walked away without saying anything.
This is a very good lunch up for those who love Chinese food. Well its not really Chinese but its kind of greasy. That being said it tastes really good. Lot of items are from 70 cents $1 to dollar fifty. so you choose your box and you choose the items that you like normally a lunch for two people depending on how much you eat is about twenty bucks. usually what are you buy a box with $20 worth of stuff inside we have a meal and then one more meal later for 2 people. I recommend going early in the morning thats when they have the biggest selection
Always the good grinds... If you go before they sell out! And believe me... They sell out.. the tempura style Ono (wahoois my hands down favorite. A close second is the mustard cabbage maki roll... When it is available.
Friendly staff plenty of Aloha!!...great food... decent prices perfect for picnics or if you headed to work awesome for your lunch!!! Sometimes it does get busy and there is a long line but heyyy... if it wasnt busy then the food wouldnt be good right? Worth the wait!!
A very small local Japanese restaurant. Love their food! Very traditional old school Japanese food! Price is unbeatable! Very very cheap, nothing is more than $3 on the menu. Most of the food is $1-2! Love their fish cake, fried fish and fried chicken! A lot of local people come here to buy food, not a lot of tourists. Although food is a bit salty, you can order more rice that will balance out. Highly recommend!
First - cash onlySecond - we spent $30 for 4 persons meal. You cant get that in Hawaii!Third - food was great too! I really liked the tempura sweet potatoes
An absolutely wonderful place for Okazuya style food. They have an awesome selection to please everyone in the family, group or party!I have been coming here over 30 years and have always been pleased by the quality of their food! Whether Catering for a Party, or grabbing a meal to share at the Park or Beach, the Hilo Lunch Shop is an incredible Choice!
They great local comfort foods that I grew up with. Even when its pack with customers the staff keeps everybody moving without feeling rushed. Get there early before they run out. Try the chicken papaya to their fry chicken cant go wrong.
I was surprised the fried chicken fried ono, fried egg plant, was cold at 11:45am during lunch rush. Price was avarage. Food was otherwise good. Long rice was warm. Everything is priced individually so you are not confined to preselected meal assortments. Good variety.
