Hikari Sushi Bar - Beach Street Queenstown - Japanese restaurant in Queenstown, New Zealand
Nasty sushi,That isn’t even cheap!Depicted plate was over $40 nzdIf you want decent Japanese fix, this is not it.Would not recommend or return.
Delicious Japanese dishes served up by friendly staff.Weve had Udon noodles, bento and sushi here at different times.
Very good place for a quick work lunch.
Love the food here. They are so delicious. Small store and always busy.
The service is much worse than before. None of the staff are friendly. Especially the woman staff.
Came here for the sushi - dont eat much but came across some unique sushi types I never had before. When I left, I realized I had left behind somd cookies in a bag that I had bought from Cookie Time. Thanks to the employee for cleaning the table but leaving behind the cookies so I could return and collect them!
Very overpriced for what you get. Ramen bowls are deceptively small for $20, poor quality beef (not chasuand the noodles are instant ramen.Sashimi horrendously overpriced with small pieces/portions.Much better Japanese places in QT (Kappa and Tanoshi to name a few). Better quality, portions and price.
Decent Japanese food. Portions were a bit small for the price.
Not recommend! Below average taste and services, also very expensive
Authentic Japanese Ramen and tempura. Was so good that we ordered more tempura. Highly recommended.
Really accommodating for a FODMAP diner. Delicious simple meals that are well priced.
went to go eat there, and asked if there were any seats available. Got told there was a seat by the window so proceeded to sit down and wait to be served. was sitting there for 15 minutes and no one had come to serve us, (even though there were waiters who didn’t seem busyGot so sick of waiting I just left the restaurant. Very disappointed, I don’t know if this is a common occurrence but I won’t be back to find out.
Other orders were 5/5 except of my order-spicy beef udon. Was served with wrong order and they did change for me (with no mention about the overcharged which was only $1 soI didnt bother). But!! the soup for the order was tasteless, I hope thats not how it actually taste. And the staffs were too busy to check on customers. Left with full disappointment
Great place to have a quick sushi snack on the go.
I have been a regular customer at Hikari for a few years, so I was incredibly disappointed by the customer service when I brought my partner in for dinner at 6:45 and was told we were not able to be seated as it was too late, even though the business closes at 7. This has happened twice now. Even then, being a regular I would expect good service and expect the business to stay open even a couple minutes later to satisfy their loyal customers, I am now thoroughly discouraged from spending my money at this business in the future and will instead find a new regular business to go to as I did not expect to be turned away. Good food, terrible customer service.
Ramen is very good. Udon too. We will go again
Food was fresh and tasty. Friendly service and wasnt overpriced
Such a good place to eat! Came here on a spur of the moment we need to eat kinda vibes, certainly wasnt disappointed! :The Raman is amazing 🤩
great self service sushi, very reasonable prices too. got discount too.
Looking for a lunch place, our last day in Queenstown found this dainty japanese eating nook. Service was quick and our bentos served in a flash. I recommend others to try when in town. NZ Covid 19 protocols were followed.
Affordable and delicious Japanese restaurant in central Queenstown. Simple menu, but has a good variety. It looks like they also have a sushi bar at lunchtime. Food came out fast. The ramen were excellent, gyuoza and chicken karage were good too. Great service
Love the ramen here! And the prawn tempura. We live in QT and this is our fave Japanese restaurant. They have a sushi bar and can also order from the menu. We tried the spicy seafood udon and the chef’s sushi/sashimi platter but found ourselves too full to finish the sushi (after eating ramen). Great selection of food, drinks and sake. 😅 Highly recommended.
Wide range of sushi and lunch menu has some good options. However, the dinner menu is huge, full with options for everyone. Highly recommend going here with friends for a dinner date
We were really impressed at the sushi on offer. There were a wide variety of sushi rolls and nigiri to choose from. We settled for a few sushi and nigiri as appetiser while waiting for our ramen. The sushi was large and flavourful. The tonkotsu ramen broth was good, but the seafood ramen was lacking in depth, hence the 4 star.
Had their lunch bento which was at a decent price. Fast service & food was tasty.
Lovely fresh food, friendly staff, highly recommended for sushi lovers. Nice vegetarian option for me
Food was heavenly. Will definitely be returning. One request, please open in Nelson
Two of us dined at Hikari, we wanted some authentic "easy food" like we would get in Tokyo or Osaka. We reserved in advance, on arrival the staff had reserved the best table in the restaurant for us. After talking with the waitress, we were so impressed - we cook a little Japanese at home and she knew more about the cooking process and ingredients than we did. It was clear she had outstanding menu knowledge. And along with the young man she was working with were so bright, friendly and kind. We ordered the Chicken Katsu, Miso Ramen, Pork Gyoza, Salmon Sashimi, seaweed salad and a huge 500ml glass of Asahi. The food was simply amazing, fresh and authentic and not modified for local I could see the chef preparing the Sashimi fresh rather than pre-prepared. I could see the fine grade of Panko on the Katsu on the chicken, thin but juicy (that is how it should be), which only skilled chefs can produce. The salmon was cut in the correct direction along the fillet, making it melt in my mouth as we ate with the genuine wasabi - again not so common. They catered to our preferences leaving some ingredients out that we preferred not to eat. What we loved: the Japanese staff, who were so knowledgeable at service and skilled in preparation of food. Professional chefs, there was no pre-prepared food we could see. You know they are focussed when the chef is watching your reaction as you take the first bite of his sashimi. They even hand make to order their sushi, which I have never seen anywhere else in nz. The quality of food was outstanding, having been to Queenstown many times we believe we have discovered a hidden gem.We have eaten at top Japanese restaurants and can say there are few Japanese restaurants in nz putting put food as authentic as you will find here. Our bill for all of that food and drink came to $92.50, very good for two mains, three sides and their largest beer.We discovered they do Unagi (eeldon, so we will be back tomorrow
Popped in here for a spontaneous late night dinner as everything was closing up and boy we were surprised! Amazing service, amazing sushi. My only regret is that I didnt try the other menu items but I will be returning to try there don bori bowls and curry!
This place has good night out food, with very pleasant and generous staff. Food was a bit delayed, however staff were apologetic and provided us with additional dumplings, really lovely of them to offer this.
Best sushi Ive had since arriving in New Zealand. Solid portions and creative twists to conventional sushi.Nice atmosphere and friendly staff too.
It blows my mind that this place doesn’t have better reviews. Best ramen/maki/gyoza that I’ve had in the southern hemisphere. The service was excellent as well. I would recommend the spicy pork ramen with an extra serve of noodles and especially the spicy tuna roll. As I said gyoza was also top notch. Wish I could come here more often; haven’t been this full and content with a meal in ages.
My friend and I visited Hikari Sushi Bar for dinner at around 7pm. The place wasnt too crowded with a decent number of tables free. We sat and ordered within 5 minutes of our arrival but had to hail down a passing server to get our order. The restaurant got more and more crowded as the hour crept towards 8pm and I noticed that the limited number of servers employed were poorly equiped to deal with the rising number of guests. Their lacking numbers, in contrast to the high amount of guests made them flustered and rushed in their customer service. After roughly 40 minutes of waiting a server presented to me the wrong dish, I had ordered a miso pork don but was instead served a ramen broth. After politely informing the staff that I was served the wrong dish I proceeded to continue my wait.Shortly after this mistake, my friend was served his meal, while I continued to wait for my correct order.Another 10 minutes passed before I was served my dinner.By then, a total of 50 minutes had occurred from when we entered the restaurant to when I was served. The food itself was decent but for me it was not worthy of a nearly 1 hour wait. When we went to pay for our meals I was kindly informed that the restaurant was willing to waive the fee for my dinner as a form of compensation for their mistake. This was one of their few redeeming features that raised them from a 1 to 2/5 rating. In summary, the main faults I found with Hikari Sushi Bar were their inadequate staff numbers and long wait times which are not in tune with the prices on their menu. The food wasnt bad but again not something I would be okay waiting close to one hour for.
While holidaying in Queenstown, the girls wanted to eat Japanese food, especially the Udon and Ramen noodles. We located two Japanese restaurant but one of them didnt serve the noodles for dinner so we went to this restaurant. The food and service was good.
This is the only Japanese restaurant where Ive ever found a vegetarian Bento box. The food was unique, so good and so well prepared. I was there with family for a night before Christmas dinner. Probably the best meal Ive had in more than a month in New Zealand. Nice place, friendly staff, amazing food. Thanks 🤗
Good food and service.Family Friendly. Not cheap but great quality.
What a find! The bento didnt look much when it was served (we were hungry! LOLBUT it was actually quite filling by the time we were done eating. Lots of flavor in every bite. ❤
Good sushi and sashimi set. Fish is quite fresh and thickly cut. Appears to be Korean run but who cares if the food is good.Portions are good and service is prompt and efficient. We got our meals pretty quickly after ordering.Reasonably priced Japanese restaurant in Queenstown compared to most other places here. Its hard to find a place that doesnt charge an arm and a leg in this tourist town.
Absolutely the best Japanese restaurant with such reasonable price in the town! We have came here for second time during our trip!
On tap Asahi a plus. Great food, Especially the grilled salmon 🤙But from Australia seemed a little pricey.
Should be 0 stars! Absolutely terrible!I asked for fresh sushi not the ones in the window as they looked old and crusty. They said that’s fine, I watched the girl make fresh one only to have the owner/manager who took my order go over to her and tell her to give me the old ones. Not to mention the fact that he took the fresh ones off the plate with bare hands to replace it, he couldn’t leave the staff do their job. It was honestly the worst I have ever had I left it uneaten on the table and went elsewhere for lunch.
Absolutely gorgeous little Japanese place. Food is not just super tasty but also very reasonably priced. After purchasing the (chickenKatsu Don at only 14.90, I was convinced I was coming back again. The chicken was so fresh, melt-in-your-mouth tender and well seasoned. The panko crumb was crispy and crunchy, and the Katsu sauce was perfect with the Japanese Mayo.Service was quick, attentive and with a smile. Definitely worth a visit.
A good choice to have Japanese cuisine. Katsu was crispy and well-battered, bento had a variety of side dishes. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would like to visit again.
It looks like an ordinary small restaurant in Queenstown. But the food that we ordered is the best Japanese food that we had in New Zealand. Sashimi is very fresh.
Very busy and Little bit pricey due to holiday seasons. Although, the quality of sushi is excellent
Never go to this restaurant, you will regret it. I would rate it 0 star if i could. The two small plates cost $112.8, we were told that this is for four people, which is very disappointing. So expensive, there is also a cucumber sushi in it. We waited for at least half an hour for this meal. The guests who arrived slower than us have already finished their meals. It is the worst place I have ever been to.
I’ve been coming here for about 3 years now and had this place rated as a steady 5 stars for two years. Over the last year I’ve been here 3 times and each time I’m more disappointed. I went there for dinner tonight to see they’d changed the menu. The quality has again significantly dropped, AND the prices have gone way up. I ordered dumplings for about $10, when they were delivered they only served four dumplings and they were clearly just bulk buy freezer dumplings. Poor value. The main was $38ish for some cheap beef and about one small potato. This is the last chance I’ll give this place. Really unfortunate to see its decline when it used to be so reliable.
Vege tempura got only 5 vegetables on plate and it’s cost $15. Ramen taste like instant ramen, the egg was not runny at all.
Sashimi was as good as ever. Ramen was quite disappointing though. The broth was thin and watery.
The Udon is nice, the tempura and katsu cooked perfectly. Good presentation. Sauces are on the (rathersweet side.
