Lovely house...great restoration and plenty of information
A very interesting place to learn about the history of circular head. More investment is needed to help make history come alive.
Great history to learn about the early settlement in the area.
Beautiful property, lovely story also very sad and moving
Always been a gorgeous place to visit. Great views of Stanely from the green hills. Interesting history. They no longer do the ghost tours but well worth the visit.
We loved finding out the history of Highfield and a little insight to what life was like in the early days. Definitely worth stopping at and having a wander around.
Stunning view of the Nut and the beautiful historic buildings which are all very well kept.
How beautifully Highfields House has been restored.Poignant and historic, well worth the entry fee.

It was a restored historic home. Lots of information. Not too expensive.Does have public toilets
Even a wild windy, wet day in Stanley seemed to only add to the nostalgia of Highfield House. Wonderful snapshot of Tasmanian history. Gorgeous grounds and beautiful historic house. Worth a visit.
Well worth a visit, very well maintained and great insight to early settlement.
Spectacular views over Stanley. Magnificent old home. Wonderful garden, well watered, weeded, and lovingly tended.
A must see on your visit to Stanley. So much history to learn - you could spend hours looking through the home and exploring the gardens. Host was very knowledgeable and welcoming.
So many Historical sites and towns to visit and Highfield is another one of those. situated next to the Nut in Stanley this site is an nice place to visit as most of the buildings there are stall mostly in tack and been done up nicely, the donations from the good people of the it me to make it look like just like it would back in the day makes the experience even better.
Absolutely beautiful experience, so glad this beautiful building has been saved not overly restored but still showing old building structures. . Staff do friendly and informative. Great day
A real step back in time. Beautiful gardens and self tour was very educational.
This thoughtfully restored 1830s homestead has much to offer. A stroll through the main house, outhouses and beautiful gardens and grounds offers a comprehensive view of life from this bygone era. I have visited several times and always enjoy the experience.
Amazing place & history. Learn how a few upper class twits made life unbearable for all those around them and how to fail at business! Dont miss it...
Great job of restoring a unique piece of Tasmanian history. Spent an enjoyable hour or do wandering and immersing ourselves into another era.
A great place that has been beautifully restored. Worth the visit.
Wow what an incredible insight into the beginnings of Tasmania. Great staff that are very knowledgeable. Not really recommend for children or teenagers as they may find it boring. Very interesting.
Great historical site. Well maintained with excellent information
Love this site. So amazingly restored. Difficult history, but nonetheless historically significant. The ruthlessness of the settlers apparently unparalleled. I am grateful for the opportunity to feel the indigenous pain. And for the saving of such a significant site. Plus I love the architecture
Amazing place. Staff are so informative and helpful. The history of this place is amazing . I think we learnt more here about the colony and its hard workers and convicts than we did in school. Its an eye opener about how rough it was and how some of the ladies coming over were disappointed with it when they arrived. But how can you not love Tasmania ♥️ it is absolutely stunning and same with this home . The up keep is amazing and very costly . Cheap entrance fee and so worth the stroll around. Love how the rooms are done to show us what they had back in their time. Love love love this place. Do stop in when your up visiting Stanley .
This site is well worth a visit. It has a fascinating history, and the restoration is remarkable!
Well worth visiting. Well preserved and good content to info boards. An insight into colonial history of area, plus grounds have scenic views back to Stanley..
Beautiful old home and gardens
Really interesting history behind the building of this house overlooking beautiful Stanley & surrounds. Small fee to tour the house inside.
Second time we have been. Equally as great as the first time. A great insight into the start of European settlement in this part of Australia.
Heres a bit of history I knew nothing about. It might have been list. Good on the Tasmania Parks Service for saving this important legacy. Wonderful views. Well worth visiting.
Well worth the visit (and entrance price- well restored and cleverly done
Friendly and knowledgeable staff member. Such a delight to talk to.
Great piece of Tasmanian history. Awesome views from every windowWas great being able to tour all the outbuildings as well stables, barn, argicultralist house, garden are nice and the stone walls are amazing....
Even though we didnt do a tour of the homestead the grounds were lovely to walk around. They had sheep, horses and a rooster named Douglas so the kids had a ball running around. The view of the Nut was great too.
Great history and beautiful location
Wonderful place, well presented and very educational
Well done on restoring the site of highfield historic site
Authentically renovated property, a great insight into a past era, well worth the entry fee
A window onto Tasmanias history in what was then a very remote region. Excellently portrayed an explained, even the gardens recreated from old paintings. Beautiful views back to Stanley and the Nut. Good walk from the town if you dont want to drive, but sadly no pedestrian access across the grounds.
Only a short drive from Stanley. This well restored and preserved site has loads of history to reveal and offers spectacular views over the Nut. Well worth a visit.
Beautiful, interesting place with stunning views!
Great piece of Tasmanian history that I never knew about. Beautifully restored. Lovely gardens and interesting out buildings especially the school/chapel. Excellent views of The Nut from here.
Highfield surprised me as I normally just tag along to such places. But Nature turned on a fabulous spring day to set it off. The house was so roomy, airy and brightly open that the large descriptive excerpts and facts were so interesting, and easy, to read. One could almost expect one of those folk to turn up at any time as the place is pretty much as it was. It was easy to get the feel of what it must have been like. Looking back up at the master bedroom from the garden one recalled the “fifteen children”. That the recorded hymn being played in the chapel is named “Push the breach” was further food for thought. The folk who selected this site knew all about “Location, location..” even back then.
Definitely worth spending the time reading all the boards - so many fascinating perspectives of life in the establishment of the Van Diemanland Company. The building served as a guesthouse for the whose-who list of Tasmanian colonial movers and shakers. A very beautiful refurbishment and certainly an eerie transportation back to a bygone era.
Worth a visit if you’re staying in Stanley. It gives a fascinating insight into the history of the area and offers fantastic views of the Nut and the town of Stanley. The house is very well maintained with much of the original furniture still inside. You’re given a guide when you begin which tells you about each room in the house and each location on the grounds. I’d allow about an hour and a half to fully explore the entire place.
Most enjoyable visit, the NP staff was very informative and friendly and answered all our questions. We do not usually do the museum thing but this place is unreal you can see and feel the history.
We attended the Garden Spectacular here 21st October. The gardens and flower arrangements were as promised, spectacular. This coupled with the history and period furniture and costumes on display in the house made it a very enjoyable afternoon. The house is open and on display at other times. We just had the bonus of displays, food and refreshments, not to mention the bullock team demonstration. Added bonus is also the view of the Nut and surrounds.
