Gothic revival mansion dating from 1836, with restored exteriors, plus tearoom and gardens.
Highcliffe Castle in Bridgeport
Description
Excellent visit and interesting, plenty for children to do hands on activities.
Very interesting to see the inner structure. Most castles only show you the glitz and glamor. Didnt get to see the gardens, it was pouring on our way out. We did visit the Tea room, and the cakes and scones were delicious.
MoreDidnt go to the castle however the beach was amazing. 2 hour walk by the sea and back up on the cliff. Lovely beach, saw surfers, swimmers and a brave kayaker in turbulent sea. Fab day out 🥰🥰
MoreFirst time visit to this castle and we were pleasantly surprised. The exterior looks impressive but due to two fires in the 60s the interior shows artifacts, art, stain glass workshop, & information on the history of the castle which we found fascinating. Its a credit to the people who have restored the castle. Its used as a wedding venue which & the room used is well presented.
MoreVisited today with some students. Beautiful place. Easy access to the beach through the gardens. Plenty of parking. We spent a long time reading promises printed on the benches outside. Staff were helpful and informative. The students loved the dressing up room and the mosaic board. Will be coming back with family
MoreWhat a fabulous job the Council and partners have done in saving this lovely house. The conservation is stunningLeaving you to see construction methods, fire damage even graffiti from where it was left derelict. The room volunteers are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Also a great Wedding Venue.Well worth a visit at only £6.50 for concessions.
MoreLove this place aways something happening.I dont go in ,just coffee on the lawn and people watch. Then a walk to the beach.
MoreAn interesting building, even if it barely more than a shell now. Good displays tell the history of the castle, and we had a lovely guide who added more colour to the repeatedly sorry chapters of this building.
MoreExcellent behind the scenes tour. The tour guide managed to fit us on his 1.00 pm tour. Thank you for entertaining us with your wealth of knowledge. A very interesting place to visit.
MoreVery Interesting behind the scenes tour. Lovely grounds and walk to the beach.
Highcliffe Castle is a lovely and unique place to visit, very interesting history and different to other places we have visited because of the fire that took place there. Dont expect rooms with lavish furniture and paintings but what theyve done here is really interesting showing how the rooms wouldve looked with photos and imaging. There are guides on hand with lots of interesting facts and information. It also has a beach, which was a nice surprise. There are tea rooms there too but we didnt try anything there as they were quite busy.Would definitely recommend a visit.
MoreWhat a lovely place. Unspoilt and not commercial so no shopping parade but does have a small cafe/drinks outlet near the castle. The beach is so clean and a beautiful stretch so plenty of space for everyone. Large bins everywhere so easy to dispose of rubbish.Perfect day out with family. Only issue sometimes finding a parking space and then paying via PayGo App or cash (cant pay by cardcan be time consuming. We didnt go into the castle as closed due to event but will do next time.Overall highly recommended!
MoreWell worth a visit. Great afternoon at Highclffe castles musical event by the Big Swing Band. Grounds are lovely and staff were helpful and friendly, special mention to Grace and Kelly. Grace being the wedding planner. Beautiful setting for celebrations, functions etc. Theres also the delightful tearoom.
MoreNice place to visit, including a nice walk down to the beach (ramps, no steps). Interesting, well-presented history of the property. Cafe with sandwiches/snack options. Parking is cash or app-based, and mobile connectivity is variable.
MoreInteresting building. We went on the Behind the Scenes tour. The guide, Marion was very interesting. Delicious light lunch in the cafe. Clean toilets. Beautiful walks with a path down to the beach.
MoreWe had a lovely day. The grounds are beautiful. We had tea and cake in the tearoom.Toilets and baby changing.Parking is on the Ringo app. Max stay is 4 hours but if you want to go beach after and run out of time there is another car park for the beach.Staff very friendly.Grounds well looked after.Beach right there.
MoreNot quite a castle in the sense that we normally vision a castle but more like a large stately home.I remember this place when it was a ruin but now it has been rebuilt. We parked up in one of a number of disabled bays but even though you might have a Blue Badge you still have to pay unless you have a BCP badge (£2.70 for 2hrsmax stay 4hrs.We walked down to the beach & my friend who is in a wheelchair enjoyed it too as there is a zigzag path down. The views from the well kept gardens are beautiful, you can see over to the Needles & the IoW & then over to Mudeford & Hengistbury Head. It must have been lovely for the residents back in its heyday. There is a coastal path where you can walk east or west.We didn’t enter the castle & have a look around maybe next time when we have more time as the parking was running out but we did have a coffee in the garden tea rooms, such a lovely setting.
MoreBeautiful castle, we couldnt enter due to a wedding taken place so we grabbed a coffee and enjoyed the view from the outside had a little walk around then spent some time on the beach, definitely worth a view I would recommend getting there early has parking is limited
MoreOur daughters wedding and reception were held at the Castle. Everything was superb and we cant thank Lara, Aaliyah and the team enough for making it a perfect day. The ceremony was at 2:30pm, the Wedding Breakfast at 4:30pm and the party finally ended at midnight. We even spent some time at the beach!
MoreParked here to go to the beach. Was very quiet when arrived fairly early. However, still plenty of space even when had had a swim and was leaving at about half eleven.
MoreFantastic ambiance, you could sit hours and imagine the parties back in the 20s, lovely access to beach and an all day experience with a great walk to Mudford down the beach
MoreAllow 90+ minutes to see everything inside. Theres a lift for the infirm. Theres a period costume dressing up room with plenty to choose from & a naval uniform. The fact that its only part restored is interesting if youre into construction. Magnificent garden (with refreshments), lovely views of the IOW & zigzag ramp down to the beach. Very knowledgeable staff. Harry Selfridge lived here for 6 years.
MoreNice place of interest to visit if you have a spare hour or so. Shut on Friday and Saturday as it is now council owned. Weddings take place on these two days and obviously make more money.
MoreBeautiful property with a nice garden. If you walk towards the beach you can also enjoy a nice view. Parking spaces could be scarce, and you cant pay for the paid parking with a card. You can only use coins or an app. There is also a café, but we did not use it, so it is not part of the evaluation, but we wanted to mention that there is one.
MoreAttended an all day wedding. The whole experience was excellent, food and drink top class, staff were excellent. All facilities were clean. Close to the beach. A great day had by all
MoreMy cousin had a wedding there, its wonderful place, the service is good, the view and castle so nice.
MoreWell worth a visit just to see the views to the Island and beyond. Very cool walk in the nature reserve, great for the dog.
MorePicturesque historic house with nice, little cafe with outdoor seating.Pay&display car park (max stay 4hrswith easy access down to a nice sandy/shingle beach!
MoreWe had a wonderful visit today. All the staff were so friendly throughout and the ticket price is incredible value. We purchased our tickets online in advance and were lucky enough to arrive just before a tour began at 1pm which showcased areas of the castle not always shown to the public. Our tour guide Sue, was engaging and so knowledgeable. We were fascinated to learn so much about the history of the building. Highly recommended!Thank you so much for such a lovely day,We look forward to visiting again soon.
MoreWe enjoyed outside space more than inside but its definitely a must see/visit if you are nearby. Especially that entrance tickets, tea room and parking are very reasonably priced.
MoreFantastic wedding venue, we attending a special day yesterday, everything was great from start to finish. Main hall where the Wedding Breakfast looked awesome with the window above, food great, staff very helpful and courteous. Great place to visit during the day. Well recommended.
MoreStylish cathedral like Grade 1 listed building in the Romantic and Picturesque style. The interior has been stripped by fires but the fabric of the building and exterior decor have been recently restored. Pleasant tea room and paid parking with access to the beach.
MorePlenty of pay and display parking. Lovely grounds. Nice to walk around, beautiful views. Castle itself is very nice with the tea rooms. When we came Saturday entrance to the castle was closed due to wedding.
MoreStunning and worth a visit. We visited the cafe, fantastic food and the grounds. We didnt get time to go inside the castle as we went to the beautiful beach just down a slope/steps. The castle looks impressive and worth a visit. Note there is four hour maximum parking.
MoreLovely place near beach beautiful grounds. Was wedding there when I went so did not go in. But café stayed open so we could use
MoreIt was an on the day decision to visit. A rainy day, so ideal for a couple of hours. A large mansion house, rather than an ancient castle, it was steeped in 19th Century history of the home and area. An inexpensive fee of £7 a head, with Seniors discount. Parking fee for 3 hours on site at £2.70. The guides are excellent. A modest but charming tea shop.
MoreHighcliffe Castle is beautifully located above the beach, accessed via interesting steep steps straight onto the sand or the safer gradual slope path option. Lovely gardens with a cafe.
MoreLovely Castle next to the beach. Well worth a visit!
Nice smaller castle (more of a mansion really). Small gardens to enjoy. Cafe on site. Only £7 adult entre, car park till 31st March only 70p. Good path to cliff view and wslk to beach. Friendly staff and gift shop ( not cheap as with most shops at castles.
MoreJust a wander round the grounds and take in the views over to the Isle of Wight are worth a visit. Enter the castle and be intrigued by its fascinating story. Friendly staff help you understand the story and history of Highcliffe Castle. Excellent value and a great place to visit.Plenty of parking and at time of our visit just 70p to park for 3 hours bargin!!
MoreThe amount of restoration that has been achieved at this castle is amazing as it has burnt down twice and was abandoned for 20 years. Well worth a visit or stopping at the café there when walking along the coast.Well done to all those involved.
MoreGood place to visit, spent around 3 hours looking around the castle and gardens. Short walk down to the beach
MoreInteresting house/Castle; only the outside has been restored after 2 devastating fires in the late 60s. Owned BPC Council, it is a great wedding venue. Splendid views of the Needles from the garden. The grounds are extensive and open when the house is not.
MoreBeautiful Castle with stunning views. There are a nice coffee shop, car parking and access to Highcliffe Beach.
MoreSuch a beautiful visit, with easy parking you can use the Ringo app.lovely access to the beach below.
MoreLoved walking round the castle and seeing how it had changed over the centuries. The guides in the rooms were very friendly and knowledgeable, and the view out over the sea was stunning!
MoreBeautifully maintained castle and grounds. Great access to walks and the beach
Lovely place to visit and a brilliant place to go for a walk. If you live nearby, its a great place to walk to and relax near the beach.
MoreQuite and peaceful walks and views of the sea and Isle of Wight and Hengistbury Head .The castle is open to the public and theres a cafe selling teas coffee cake etc. Pay parking . And toilets available.
MoreA really beautiful castle. Amazing interior and truly captivating exterior architecture. Lovely little cafe and the walks and beach are actually very good. However, the gardens of the grounds arent amazing, but definitely good enough for a quick coffee! Would definitely suggest for a family afternoon out.
