Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec
Ancient geological site featuring towering, waterfall-like rock formations, pools & springs.
Just amazing location a must see definitely jump in the water if your there. No waiting line just be very careful on how slippery everything is. If your taking someone older or with some sort of disability just know when you reach the bottom horse rides are available to avoid the uphill hike back. Definitely something magical.
Bueno experiencio.. we had a good tour with a guide ... well worth the walk and they can keep a good pace 👍
Beautiful place, although road was super bumpy to arrive to, but well worth it. Lots of tolls. Super!
Beautiful place with waterfalls "frozen" in lime. These are still fed from small springs (water eyes). The place is developed for tourism, which means on the one hand there are well-maintained paths and toilets as well as small shops for food and drinks, but also some local guides and you pay for road use, parking / entrance, although relatively little - road with the car 20 pesos ( 1 euroand parking / entrance 50 pesos ( 2.50 euros- so reasonable prices.Getting there by car is still a bit of an adventure on partly unpaved roads - but Ive driven on wilder roads on Crete. The view is very nice and there is the possibility to go into the water - but you should not expect clear pool water. There is a path with steps leading to the second larger waterfall and down to its foot - this is a somewhat longer and steeper path. All in all, a beautiful place worth seeing.
Beautiful location. Water is good temperature.
Beautiful and unique place. It gets very busy and there is an expectation to tip everyone involved in the tour so be prepared that the first price could end up being double.
A great but tiring experience! There are bathrooms/showers but one pays like $25pesos. The dressing rooms are for free.Water is not hot! Just a bit cool..but after walking a total of 400 steps to view the bottom of the tower. The water felt amazing!
Oaxaca has an OutstandingBeautiful Hidden Nature Scenery. This site is definitely recommended. Sparking water growing naturally within the rocks of these mountains.
Highly recommended, if you don’t visit this place it’s like not having come Oaxaca. One more beauty of our Mexico.
Its hard to get to but worth the trip. You can swim in some of the pools there and see one of the 2 places in the world where there are calcified waterfalls (other one is in Turkey)Also a good place to spot a bunch of vultures flying around.
An amazing experience....the mineral baths and the fossilized falls an must see. A definite wonder of the world!
A beautiful place worth visiting. There are only two places known in the world where you can experience the view of the beautiful petrified waterfalls and Oaxaca is one of them. Located in the community of San Isidro Roaguía, which is around an hour or hour and a half from downtown Oaxaca, you will find these beautiful natural petrified waterfalls among the beauty of the surrounding mountains. This place has been changing a lot during the past few years.. hopefully for the best, however I would not recommend tourists to eat on the puestos around there as such food can be heavy for your stomach if you are not prepared. If you did not take a swimming suit, dont worry, you can purchase one there, even towels! Something you should definitely try is the Coco with Mezcal and one of their delicious spicy Micheladas. Youll need them!
Its a very nice place.to visit, the view and the climate are just two amazing things from ALL OF THE THINGS you can enjoy. If your budget is not that high and want to get a lot of fun, swim and rest, just come and full feel the environment as the mother nature creation and make.it part of trip and live 🙂
The petrified waterfall is the best thing you can see there. The hiking is average. But it is worth it! The grutas were over crowded and irrelevant...
Fantastic sight to visit if you are in Oaxaca. Take the time to follow the hike trail beyond the initial pools for the best views. Way back up can be a bit physically challenging.
Dirty water, crowds, nice views but nothing wow, local people running this place are incompetent - they charge you for everything, they are not polite. Toilets are dirty, everything looks dated.Sounds familiar? Almost any natural wonder in Mexico is run by people who dont know what hospitality and good service is.
Stunning place but be ready for a looong day and to walk a lot. Its worth it. Out of this world.
This place is truly beautiful. Please give yourself enough time for a swim! It is well worth it!We visited as part of a tour. Our group arrived right at the end of the day and we werent too sure if we should swim or not so we walked around and explored a bit.The main area is made up of a petrified waterfall overlooking another petrified waterfall (the more famous one from the pictures!). It is possible to walk to the top and below the more famous one and there are paths for both.We only took the path above and managed to see the main area with the pools from there. The water is very refreshing, but nice to have a swim in after a hot day. Not sure how clean it is but it was definitely lovely and I recommend you make the time to have a swim. The area has toilets (5 pesosand changing facilities (around 5 changing rooms with no charge). To get to the pools you will pass through a lot of stalls before making your way down a fairly long ramp. Technically is it accessible but Im not sure you would want to push a pram or wheelchair back up!Really glad we visited. It was well worth it.The other bits that are thrown in with the tour are a bit of filler but it is worth the trip for this.
Majestic place! Dont forget your swimswit!
Very touristy and not particularly impressive - just a viewpoint with some vaguely interesting rocks. The pools for swimming in are pretty dirty and smelly, but refreshing. Our tour took a long time to get there, but the road was nowhere near as perilous as we were led to believe - just bumpy.NOTE: You need cash to visit - there are no card-readers or ATMs. On the way in, you get charged twice; 20MXN per person to use the road, and a further 50MXN per person to access the site.Honestly, I wouldnt really recommend it.
This place is one of a kind. Go early so you can take the best pictures with not a lot of tourists. There is a hike of medium intensity but enjoyable. The scenery is the best!
Incredible natural site. Very much worth the drive. Explore by your, local bus or hire a car to reach here. Come early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. Very stunning.
We enjoyed this adventure. Pack a change of clothes and a towel if you plan to get in, and wear some decent shoes for walking. Our driver for some reason(even though we requestedtook us up the non-toll road which is winding, narrow and bumpy, but the views and scenery were nice. We took the toll road back down. I think I would do it that same way again since you get to see many of the little mezcal fabricas and farms along the way. It’s a little confusing when you get to the point were all of the vehicles must stop and then you walk over a chain gate blocking passage. From here you hop in a tuk tuk, 3 per tuk tuk, 20 pesos per person, then before you enter the drop off place you pay 50 pesos per person for tickets, then head up to the entrance area. They do have extra clothes for purchase and towels I believe. They do have food and drink stalls there. 5 pesos for the baños at the entrance and by the pools. We got a guide (works for tipswhich was helpful. He pointed out some great views and viewpoints and most importantly he showed us which plant not to touch to avoid extreme dolor. We first went down to the waterfall bottom then climbed back up. If someone in your group is not in good health then maybe best for them to stay at the top or pool area. When you are ready to leave, they will transport you back down for 20 pesos per person in the back of a transport truck.
It is definitely worth the view and the experience of swimming in the pools at the top of these waterfalls. The water gets petrified when in contact with the oxigen due to the high minerals concentration. Only 2 are known in the world: Mexico 🇲🇽 and Turkey 🇹🇷
Very beautiful views! But, make sure to have a way to rinse yourself off after swimming in the springs. My brother and I developed many itchy bumps on our bodies after swimming here and not being able to shower for hours. We came here in a tour van, and I recommend doing that instead of going on your own.
We aren’t super touristy people and tend avoid the sites that people recommend but honestly this place is worth a visit. We only needed about an hour there. It was nice views, we didn’t do it with a tour we got a collectivo to mitla and then shared a taxi up with another couple. It meant we were there before the crowds and avoided the full day tours.
An 8 hour round trip on public transport for what is essentially 2 dirty swimming pools on the side of a hill. The natural pools have clearly dried up as water is being loudly pumped in manually to keep the levels high enough to swim in so they can continue to squeeze as much money out of tourists as possible (Collectivo, "Road Toll", etcwho have fallen for the instagram hype surrounding it. Scenery is great but a similar view would be found on any other mountain around. Save you money and look at the pictures online instead
An overall very underwhelming experience not worth the energy and effort of a 6+ hours round trip from Oaxaca City. The reasons why I don’t think it’s worth visiting;1. The 1 hour local bus (which is fine), half an hour to hour wait at the collectivo terminal in Mitla and the 1,5 hour ride up the mountain are extremely time consuming and uncomfortable.2. The staff at both the collectivo company, the toll road and the entrance of Hierve el Agua are extremely unfriendly. We got called ‘pendejos’ by the lady at the collectivo terminal for not being fast enough. No one was in a rush.3. The entrance once getting there is one big overpriced bazar of snacks and drinks.4. Once at the (what we expected to benatural pools we found out that two of them are manmade and the main one is altered to hold water so tourists can swim. If it wasn’t for these adjustments the place would be dry by now. The pool water is pumped up and overall very dirty.5. The place had a noisy water pump running, smelled like sewage, had cross tape everywhere and was overall maintained very poorly.6. We later found out there is an actual paved road going up the mountain, they deliberately block it off for tourist so you have to pay the 15 pesos toll and 150 pesos (around tripcollectivo up the 1,5 hour bumpy and winding road.If you’d like to see Hierve el Agua and enjoy it for what it is (a nice mountain viewI recommend the following; lower your expectations, get a tour guide to drive you from Oaxaca City (300-400 pesos), skip the public transport hassle and make sure you have time. If you’ve got limited time in Oaxaca City, I will not recommend going.
Beautiful natural place to visit outside Oaxaca on a day trip. We arranged a car with a private driver, just so we could be there as early as possible. This worked out great because we were there only with one other family who had a photo shoot. The pools are a bit smaller then expected and there were a lot of fences and tape to prevent people from entering prohibited areas...The walk down to the petrified waterfalls is not to hard as there are stairs all the way down. Okay, it stills causes heavy breathing and pearls of sweat.Overall worth the visit.
Pure delight and beautiful, the pools waters are perfect for a swim or chill. Vistas - gorgeous, only 1 of 2 in the entire world of a petrified waterfall. Takes a bit of time to get there, out and up but fantastico! Lots of kioskos with fresh 🥥 juice chilled beers and food at the top. Luke paradise, bring sunblock and swim suit, sun is blazing up there, swim up to the edge of the world. Very cool place.
Visit using your own car/rental and not with guided tour so you have enough time to see everything without a rush. I recommend to go all the way down to the waterfall, the view is amazing!
Ive wanted to go here since the 2000s. It lived up to the hype!Highway 179 is blocked after Mitla and has been for 2 full years. This is the easier way to get to Hierve. However, there is another way. Go through Xagga, pay the toll and go straight up the mountain.Driving here isnt for the faint of heart. Dirt road with trucks and other cars. Dont go for sunset unless youre staying in Roaguia. I cant imagine taking that road in the dark.It was totally worth it though to swim in the healing waters and hike to the petrified falls.
Not what I expected. Maybe it was bad timing but the pools were being cleaned water looked a little dirty. With that said, beautiful scenery super friendly people.
The view here is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! My son and I had a blast. The pools and hiking trails are serene. The ride up and down the mountain is beautiful, but its also long and bumpy. It definitely reminds me of something out of a movie. Youll pass by so many little villages within Oaxaca. The experience altogether is very photo worthy :)
Nice spot, good pics, very bumpy road to reach it. Difficult hike down to the lower area where the best pics can be gotten. Somewhat disappointing in what I expected from others pics and reviews online, but overall a nice place.
What an adventure we caught a taxi from Oaxaca to Milta which cost 80 pesos, then from there we jumped in the back of a pickup truck which took us to the springs for 150 pesos.Once there the springs are like nothing I have seen before beautiful calcium formations created over millions of years. You can swim in the springs which was incredible for our skin made it super soft.A must when in Oaxaca.
Incredible experience! The drive there is breathtaking, the market at the entrance has some great food and the site itself is really beautiful. Definitely go see this place.
Most of the fun is in the trip.Fun 40 minutes on way trip with legal highway robbery when taking up the road. The road is a dirt path with a lot of bumps you take while being 13 inside the back of a collectivo. Same (Without the small robberythe other way.The site, is well... Quite a sight. The pictures speaks for themselves. The little hike to see the waterfall from below is nice as well. Especially since you can reward yourself with the cool water of the pools nearby
Great place but better to be there early because when we were it was nowhere to sit down. The water looks dirty but it is refreshing. Beautiful view ! If you are driving, good luck :)
Managed by the local community, it is 50 pesos per person entry, though there is another community along the road who ask an additional 15 pesos per person to pass through.Hours may vary for access though it is usually from 9am to 5 or 6 pm (sunset). Vans run from the nearby towns or bigger services from Oaxaca all day. Or from Mitla, the vans are 75 pesos per person or a cabbie will run you 500 one way. Hours of transport vary, though they run throughout the day.You can swim in the pools, there are various short walking paths, a number of small local run shops at the top to buy food or souveniers, all open air.Very much an influencers dreamscape and there are a lot of them so do your best to be respectful about time spent taking pictures at ideal angels and times as there will be others wanting the same. Also, be respectful of the locals who make this their business and know that sometimes conflict with government can close the location abruptly. At those times, be prepared to change your plans put of deference to local communities. Drive respectfully on the winding, barrow, dirt roads. It takes at least 45 minutes by vehicle and is not a good road to ride on bike based on heavy vehicle use and sharp, dusty turns.
Warning ⚠️ the road is unpaved and narrow two way. It’s way high up and sometimes one has to back down to let another pass. If you are afraid of heights or get anxiety easily you may want to close your eyes the whole way up and down for about 20ish minutes. After that it’s regular dirt road and passing two “check points” where they charge 25 and 50 pesos separately. Then one parks and on to the beautiful petrified water fall. We were shown around by a guide and it was based on tips. It’s basically made up of two parts. Small pools one can wade and swim in. To see the waterfall form you must hike many many steps down to catch a good view. We went later on in the day and there were less people. It is also windy and cold and don’t expect the water to be warm. after wading around in one get used to it. there are plenty shops to get any last minute purchases ( i got a rebozo, type of scarf, for 150 pesos)
Nice place for sightseeing, to go up by yourself from Mitla, youll pay 65 pesos of transport, 15 pesos of the enter of territory and 50 pesos for entrance to the site. You can bath in one of the pool but the best part is to go down and make the one hour hike !
Great place. Its unique as its the one of two places in the world with calcified waterfalls (great other one is in pamukale in Turkey). The road to reach it is an easy dirt road that goes up and down the mountain with some traffic. The payment is very small for something like that! The view and the cold water are exceptional!Highly recommended for all !Its worth the trouble!
Such a beautiful site to walk around and explore. You will needs about 2 hours to take it all in, and make sure to bring a bathing suit, as the water is such a treat to jump into after the hike and if you are able to catch it at sunset you are in for a treat
The view is beautiful but had the worst experience getting up there, the road is risky and a lot turns 😵💫 the hike was what I loved the most. I wasn’t hyped about the water, it’s cold and probably not safe. It’s good to go and enjoy the view.
Sooooo be prepared to be I. A very long trip up a mountain with scary roads and walk down to be able to see the waterfalls, not the best experience as we went mid day and it was super hot Guide kept saying it is worth it to go down but honestly because of how hot it was I could have easily skipped the walking down to the waterfall and stayed in the water pool on top.
Once the bus parks, you can access the natural springs/pool directly from where the all the shops are. You walk max 2-3 mins to the LEFT. And there will be a ramp going down to the pools.Do NOT follow the tour guide to the right. He leads you to the supposed waterfall (there is none). You’ll waste 45 mins (and your energyhiking down and back up steps to see a dried up mountain side. You can follow my travel tips on Youtube @ iVuDang
What a great day trip! The drive there is a bit crazy but so worth it! The views are amazing. Head to the base for a beautiful view, lots of steps. It’s great until you climb back up(I’m old and out of shapeThankfully you can get into the cold water pools once you climb back up to cool down. We did a all day trip with Hugo from Viator. Hierve el Agua and Teotitlan del Valle Tour from Oaxaca! It was a small group of four, much more personal and definitely less crowded than the vans or buses. I would highly recommend this tour!!!
Must visit place near Oaxaca. Arrived early at 10 am and had entire place to ourselves. Road to get here is bumpy though but the views make it up the effort. Awesome
Clearly as you can see from other reviews, this site is open. It’s way more built up than I thought or would’ve liked it to be. There are vendors right where you park and a clear path to walk down to the pools. You do have the option to walk a bit further up the hillside to get to a different vantage point and to get away from the crowds a bit. There is also a path down below to view the calcium deposit waterfall from the bottom. We had a rental car and drove from Oaxaca- the main highway was closed, so we took the windy road up and over the mountainside, which made it more fun and dusty.
