Herbert Street Takeaways - Fish & chips shop in Invercargill, New Zealand
Every we head into Invercargill its a must to buy lunch at Herbert st. Have not been disappointed in 4 years.
Beautifully cooked oysters and chips
Not heaps of chips for the price but they were pretty good
Really great, our family have been going here for years, would be nice if they had payWave.
I loved the fish was cooked perfectly and it was enjoyable 😊😊
Really good fish & chips 🍟, meat patty was good as well.
I have bought chips from Herbert st for over 16 years starting back when I went to boys high. Since the shop was sold 8 or so years ago the serving size has steadily decreased, along with the quality. In my opinion they have gone from being the best chips in Invercargill to bottom 3 easy, also Everytime I call they take atleast a minute to answer the phone and when they do they seem very abrupt and rude. Also often during peak hours they have who I believe is their daughter who looks around 11-12 years old and frequently appears to struggle or seem unsure of herself when handling cash and making calculations for change. I think they could make there way back up but first need to start by being pleasant, kind and inviting to there customers and hopefully revert back to the old previous cooking methings that won the previous owner many awards and in my opinion the best chips in town!!!!!. All the potential for a 5⭐but today with a small $8 bag of greasy chips and the heres your chip can you now get the full out me store attitude you get a 1⭐.
Nice good, just a little too greasy
Excellent takeaways. Recommend crumbed Blue Cod.
Poor service and response to slowness of service food was average would not recommend
Young lady on the front counter needs a lesson in customer ettiquite. Very rude to say the least. Snatched ticket out of my hand and her overall demeanor was rude .Meal was disappointing as fish was undercooked and chips were underwhelming for $5 worth. Wont be going back.
A very rude shop assistant and fish and chips were soggy and under cooked. Unfortunately wont be going here again. Very disappointing.
Really great food, but rather expensive for a fish shop.
Best fish and chips I have ever had! Nice crispy chips. Reasonable price. Would recommend.
Not the best meal Ive had, kinda ordinary, chips were slightly over done & fatty for my liking
great fish and chips ..blue cod 5 stars
Its ok. The fish and chips is not cheap for what we got.
Service is getting worse by the day .. you are told order will be ready in 10 mins 35 mins and counting later why not be honest and say what the correct wait time is ... this is happening time nd time again this will be my last visit ...
I dont know whays happened since the last time I went in there but the food has gone downhill and the service from the little girl was a bit rough.
only issue was the chip scoop size, but everything else was aight
Unbelievable, worst place for fish in chips in town........Got $10 chips, must be $1 each, got about 10, disgusting
Battered Blue Cod was absolutely delishious. Very plump, and the batter was wonderfully - not soggy, floury or too thick - bang on good crisp! Chips werent to die for, but were still good.
Fast clean an tasty food, the decor is a bit dark and and old with the need of a fresh coat of paint maybe.
Only good thing about this place is the chips, the best in town. Have recently been buying them there regularly. Their battered blue cod tastes nice as it should always do, however is not worth the $7+ for such a small piddly piece. Also the young JHC schoolgirl on the counter should learn some customer service skills. Says nothing but a quick "hello" and the amount the order costs and when the order is called out. I assume thats her who just answers with a "hello" when calling to make a phone order? Unprofessional for any business. Sorry
Usually very good but I have to say tonighs meal was alittle greasy....
We highly rate the fish and chips here. Our go to fish shop and there are at least 3 that are closer to us.
Dont order the Chinese meals! No one else does. They will microwave the frozen meat and veg place it on noodles and pour sauce on it and call it chow mein. Also there is no hygiene
This is our go to chippy as its just down the road from where we live. We usually come here and the food is hot and quick. Me my dad and my friend went here last night and we all ordered the blue cod and chips. I was sick and they both had diarrhea. We will be going to tjs from now on. Bye!
Really yummy fish and chips. A bit greasy but more than made up for by the yummy chips and awesome blue cod.
Lovely feed nice girls served us will go back
Expensive for a fish and chip shop and the place has a really greasy faty smell to it, a bit like the place hasnt been cleaned for a while.
Great blue cod! Very tasty fish and chips
Best chips in the game, but get that young girl off the counter.
Awesome! Cheap and oily! I love it!
Then mini hot dog was RAW! Do not recommend
stunning fish and chips
Great fish amd very good all round would go back anytime..
To be fair, the overall rating is a combination of the below:Tonight we ordered:2 x Battered Sausages1 x Spring Roll1 x Curry Roll$5 ChipsThe Battered SausagesNow at $3.00 each, they were tasty but the sausage meat was not the best quality. The batter was thin and crunchy, but not widely spread. These get a 3 out of 5The Spring RollThis was especially tasty. Clearly Homemade, they were made of excellent quality and ingredients.5 out of 5The Curry RollAgain, a sure winner in the combo. Again, excellent quality and tasted great.5 out of 5$5 ChipsWasnt to bad, but nothing to rave about. A fair enough sized portion, but again so so. Nothing spectacular.
Lovely fish and chips there we had blue cod crumbled very nice and chips not greasy
Rather expensive for a Fish & Chip shop.I think they have been milking the award for best chips in NZ back in around 2000 for a bit long now.Much better value for money at some other establishments. You have to remember it is a FishnChip shop. It isnt fine dining. Lol
Nice fish and chips, friendly service.
The building is shabby and in desperate need of a revamp, but the food is good and reasonably priced. Their fish and chips are the best.
Pretty pathetic servings. Fish tasty though
lovely meal well worth it
Lets be honest, I could tell you about the boring old decor or whether the customer service is friendly and welcoming. But thats not what you want to know. You want to know if the chips taste good, if the portions are big and if you are getting good bang for your buck.I dont branch out when I buy fish n chips, so I have no idea how many options the menu has.Pictured you see my standard 1 scoop, 2 potato fritters, 1 piece of fish order. Yes its a lot I know, but my fiancée isnt marry me for my body - shes marrying me for my sense of humour.I find myself always coming back to the herbert st takeaways. The portions arent the biggest Ive found else where, but the chips sure are some of the best. They arent too greasy, and they arent too salty. My potato fritters are always a little salty but that is just how I like it.The blue cod here is incredible. If you are visiting invercargill you have to make sure you try the local blue cod at least once while you are here! Blue Cod is always more expensive then Hoki (pictured), but it tastes far better.1
Nice fish and chips not greasy great feed
Best place to go in the area for fish and chips. Their portions are good and large and their prices are very reasonable. The service is really quick, I can not remember ever waiting for more than 10 minutes for the food. The blue cod is great and the deep fried Mars bars are a family favorite.
Really nice chips, not over salted, not soggy or burned. The blue cod was cooked perfectly but was only a half fillet which was disappointing. The paua pattie was woeful, more of a blended Paua and rice pattie. Fairly disappointed to be fair
This place does the best chips in town, ask for them with seasoned salt
They were good until they became really miserable with the chip portions. Will not be back! get your greasys somewhere else
