Great place to visit, I strongly recommend for those who enters to Herat at least once visit Herat Citadel.

The place everyone must see in Herat City.It was a great experience with the family exploring the Citadel of Ikhtiaruddin and the Museum.

This place is incredible and unbelievable. The history of this castle goes back to around 5K BC. The construction of this castle is amazing. It wonderful to see how people back then were so talented to build such a breathtaking castle.

Overall it was good, there is some issues like: 1- internet conection is very weak.2-in the resturant the dinner and breakfast is not good.

It felt like you are walking through history and specially Midiaeval one. Arg gave me a vibe of pride. Definitely recommend it.

3300 Year old castle, it is now a museumand its very beautiful a very old historical castle

I visited on March 28, 2019; Its amazing! beautiful ancient building Ive never seen something like that before. Its great, many nice spaces, doors and windows from 700 years ago. There are some guides to ask from around the place. Its worth seeing and think about the life style of emperors and kings in the past. There is also the national museum inside the citadel that should be separately paid to watch and another separate payment to take photos.

The history of this place as you see in the picture dates back to 330 BC. It is well-known as Herat Citadel or Citadel of alexander . local people call it qala iIktyaruddin which is at the center of herat . this place was exactly the place where alexander the great and his army settled when they Arrived to Afghanistan after the battle of Gaugamela

Its a historical fort, thats turned into a museum, on the first floor there is another showroom for antique pieces.

Visiting Herat Citadel is one of the musts. The historical architecture and combination of building materials are unique. Inside the Citadel, you will visit a museum of historical elements. There, in Herat you find kind hearts and hospitality among the citizens. Most of the times there are festivals held inside the Citadel which will make visiting there more exciting with life cultural and local musics. I was so lucky that I visit here in such a day and night. 🍀❤️

The Citadel of Herat (Persian: ارگ هرات‎, Pashto سکندرۍ کلا), also known as the Citadel of Alexander, and locally known as Qala Iktyaruddin(Persian: قلعه اختیارالدین‎), is located in the center of Herat in Afghanistan. It dates back to 330 BC, when Alexander the Great and his army arrived to what is now Afghanistan after the Battle of Gaugamela.

Historical place with cheap ticket. Very well organised . Explains from skander time to Islamic revolution. There was /is an exhibition too.

Qala Iktyaruddin (قلعه اختیارالدین‎the Citadel of Herat (سکندرۍ کلا). In 330 BCE it was also known as the Citadel of Alexander, and it is quite likely the oldest building in the city. It was destroyed by Genghis Khan’s Mongol army in 1221 CE, and then rebuilt in its present form by the Kart Governor Malik Fakhruddin in 1305 CE, only to be destroyed again by Tamerlane in 1380 CE. Tamerlang’s son, Shah Rukh, used 7,000 men to embellish the walls and repair the damage wrought by his father. It then became the heart of the Timurid Empire (1405-1506). In more recent times it has served as a military garrison and prison for various dynasties and regimes and was thus closed to visitors from the outside world until 2005 when the Afghan Army presented it to the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism.
