Hengifoss was a very well-marked trail. There is a food truck that is available sometimes (we arrived first thing in the morning so no one was around). They also are in the process of building a Visitors Centers, educational center, and another building as well. Currently there also is a water closet at the start of the trail. From the carpark, the trail splits off into two trails, one goes across the water towards the food truck. We took the one immediate from the carpark up the stairs. This was the more scenic trail, so I do recommend this trail. There are many points along the trail where it stops to overlook different points of the waterfalls or if you turn back around, the views are amazing as well. There are many sheep gates as well, which you should close as there are sheep along the way to greet you, so say hi. The waterfall at the end is gorgeous. The trail does end prior to the waterfall, but some people it seems venture past the trail onto the rock scramble to try to get to the waterfall. It apparently reaches a point around the turn of the scramble where to reach the fall you would have to go into the water and cross over to the opposite side. Also keep in mind, all of this is in an area where there are falling rocks. I recommend not going past the trail end. The hike in total is just over 6 miles. A lot of wonderful views.

Nice waterfall. The hike up is a fairly intense climb, around 750 ft ascent. 2.75 miles round trip, took about 1:15 minus stops. The path itself is easy, just a lot of uphill walking

Absolutely stunning waterfall. The short hike took a little less than 40 minutes to reach the second waterfall, which was the highlight of the afternoon. The elevation gain wasnt as bad as it looked.I think in total we were up there around 2 hours with both waterfalls, pictures and drone time.

A decent hike up the mountain, not too strenuous but you should be reasonably fit, paths are well marked, its easy to find your way, and not very difficult to navigate. Beautiful views in multiple directions with easy free parking

This is a fairly decent hike to the waterfall. At the beginning you have a good sized parking lot bathroom facilities and there is even a food vendor nearby that has awesome food. The hike gains in the elevation almost the whole way its fairly gentle but you might need frequent rest stops for a couple minutes each. The views depending on the day are awesome seeing different geological strata along the way. There are several areas that you can go out over the gorge which is created for really spectacular views for photos. The end of the trail is at a place where you can see the waterfall on a clear day or slightly foggy day. Right at the river. The day we went it was cloudy so we couldnt see the falls and many people turn back at that point. We however, decided to follow the river up to see the falls first hand. As soon as we left the main trail we saw there was a trail continuing on that went along the river. This particular Trail was really cool and fun to follow however it did have some areas where it was a little difficult to climb or keep your purchase. There was one section on this part of the trail that you had to cross over the river by picking which rocks to hop on and you certainly did not want to fall in but it was exhilarating.Continuing on we came to a big rock fall area where we knew the fall was right on the other side lots of people went upwards on this area we decided to go left and down we saw a big Flat Rock that somebody had used some natural chalk to draw a big heart on it. We went down that way went around this big rock and we realized it was a cave next to us and we went in and it was awesome not many people see this cave because they go up instead of left and down towards the river.Continuing on WE very shortly came to the fall itself which you can get very close to and its all inspiring even if its cloudy you look up and the falls disappear upwards into the clouds it was just amazing. On the way down there was a bridge going over the gorge which took you to the other side we decided to go down that way as there was a small cheap path going down along the gorge. We found that they were in the process of creating another Trail on that side of the Gorge which was just in its beginning stages. It offered different views of the gorge which you cant see from the main side.At the very end of this particular trail, there was a food vendor which I will put in a different review that was really good food and welcome after the long hike. If you happen to find a pair of white camo gloves along the way, let me know 😊.

Amazing waterfallActually, there is another one on the path to Hengifoss, which is stunning too.Very accessible from the parking. The path and the overviews from the path are stunning.Even with kids it is easy to hike.In order to have the sun on the waterfalls (and not behind), try to hike on morning / noon time.On the parking there is a very charming food truck, with house made dishes and sweets, which I truly recommend.

Loved this hike! Took us almost 3 hours go get to the bottom of the fall and back.We went clockwise and there are info boards on the way up. We were lucky that path to the base of the fall is accessible. Truely amazing! The way down is less structured (but i think its work in progress), follow the wooden stick with yellow mark.

Beautiful waterfall. The path ends a little bit before the base of the waterfall but youre still going to get a magnificent view on it. The hike up there is about 45min, easy path, you will walk past another gorgeous waterfall on the way up, free parking, toilets in the beginning of the hike.

Breathtaking! I was blown away (literally, by the wind). We were unlucky because it was so windy that day, we were worried for our safety a bit (in some parts of the hike, there is no rope for you to hold on to in case of strong wind). So mind the weather! The entire hike took us around 2h30. It was quite steep (especially in the beginning). Towards the end you have to walk through water and stones. Nevertheless, it was a very fun hike and the waterfalls were beautiful. Especially the Litlanesfoss.

It totally doesn’t worth it. This waterfall should be renamed to “disappointment fos”.40 min sinuous route with 240m elevation. The waterfall is small and not impressive.

The very best rainbow at a waterfall I saw at the end of my jurney. But you need to cross the river with some jumps at the end, and you should be sure-footed for the last 200m (it is a mix of climbing an hike)

This place is amazing. The hike is tall and steep, but worth it if you take some breaks. The red layers in the rock really come out in the sun, second tallest waterfall in Iceland and worth every second of it. Absolutely stunning

This is one of the most beautiful waterfall Ive seen in Iceland. The height is impressive and the surrounding scenery with the alternating black / red rock layers is breathless. Although its not possible to reach the base of the waterfall the view and sound are really impressive. To reach the waterfall there is a short but quite steep path (5 km total, 250 m ascentwith wonderful views of the Lagarfljot lake and surrounding valley behind.

Really cool waterfall! I wish we had been able to get closer but due to high water levels part of the path was blocked. It was SUPER windy when we got to the top so be mindful. The trail can get fairly steep, the longest steep stretch is at the beginning so if you can navigate that you should be okay. Without the last part of the trail, it only took us about an hour total. WC/ bathroom at base of trail.

Great hike. Took 2 adults and 2 kids about 2 hours. Don’t attempt if you aren’t fit. It’s uphill all the way to the falls with some scrambling around flooded paths.

Very nice waterfall and well kept hike to the waterfall. We visited end of March and had to cross two small streams and patches of ice. Would recommend waterproof shoes and trousers. You can go to the main viewing platform (muddy but easy hikeor continue on to the waterfall via a less well kept path. Most of it was frozen and we arrived in the afternoon when the sun no longer reached into the valley but the red coloured lines on the rocks were still impressive. If you visit, please walk on the path and in the mud if needed rather than on the surrounding grass of the fields. We saw way too many people walking as they pleased and creating new paths, destroying the vegetation around. This is a general problem in Iceland but very noticeable here

This place is a must if you love hiking, spectacular views, and waterfalls. Took lots of fantastic pictures ( real easy 👍).A third of the way I realized my water bottle was empty, fortunately Iceland has the cleanest water ( filled it along the hike 👍). What a workout, I was breathing hard from time to time. Must be careful, falling rock are a real danger ( pay attention, stay alert, have fun 👍). Its a great feelingGetting to the end, very satisfying 😊🙏👍. Definitely worth it, simply breathtaking. 👍👍👍👍👍

What a hike! I went there alone around 7 at night, had the waterfall to myself for a few minutes, it was eerie because it was getting dark, there were clouds hovering at the top and there were boulders that had fallen and broken the wooden pathway to the base of the waterfall. Overall, I stopped many times (I never work outbut I made it. The way up is really beautiful though, multiple waterfalls and streams and small bridges to cross.

Impressive waterfall at the end of an easy trekking of 45/60min.This beauty is not exactly on the Ring1, but it is worth to drive a bit more (1h approximately one you leave the Ring 1to enjoy it.The road we drove was a bit steep but doable with any car, super itinerary you will enjoy! From the parking you can easily reach it, the hiking is a bit steep for the first 20min, but you see the waterfall already al you can make some break and enjoy the view. You will find also another waterfall after 20-30 min walking, quite interesting because frames by basalt columns. One arrived you enjoy this 120m waterfall 100m far from the jump, if you want you can reach it outside the path following the small river (not recommend, but easy).Close to the parking you have a Food-Truck and a toilet. We decided to arrive the night before sleeping at Hengifoss guesthouse: this will give you the idea to be in an American camping on a lake (they have camping, parking and rooms with private bathroom). We loved how they welcomed us!PHOTO TIPS: I recommend to have a wide angle (17-70 / 24-105mmto capture the waterfall into the basin and a zoom to capture details such the red stripes in the rock(100-400mm).A drone will give you an amazing prospective. You can fly with no problem. We visit it at 12pm, the light was perfect to have the waterfall perfectly enlightened. If you want more info, see pictures or ask questions follow me on YouTube and Instagram: @francesco_bonamassa

A great hike up to an amazing waterfall. The path is steep in places but is well marked with plenty of rest stops along the way. The car park has a toilet and just across the river is a lovely food bus selling soup and waffles to revive you after the hike.

Absolutely must do! From the parking area the waterfalls are 2.5km each way. The trek is mostly easy except for the last section which is over boulders. In summer there are wild flowers everywhere. There is a little fall on the way.

This was an awesome workout with a bonus at the end. The hike was STRAIGHT UP. No switchback, just grind. There’s a lower fall with hexagonal basalt columns, various mini falls and the big kahuna at the top. Well with it and amazing views of the valley and adjacent mountain range. You can get a waffle and ice cream at the bottom also for 1500 ISK which is tasty and supports the local people.

Beautiful waterfall absolutely worth the drive. You have too hike to see it up close and the hiking is not for everyone but if you take it slow you can make it. People afraid of heights can get anxious about the height at the hiking trail. There is a part of the trail closed now because of stones that can fall down but you can see it close enough.

One of the highest waterfalls on Iceland. There are plenty of signs explaining the origin of this strange formation. The trail to the closest observation point is almost 2.5 km and is slightly challenging to walk. Along the entire length of the path you climb about 200m, and there are only stairs for the first few meters. Parking and entrance are free. There are some other amazing waterfalls along the way. The place was not very busy with other people.

Far enough off the Ring Road to be reachable, without drawing too many tourists. A little more challenging hike up through sheep pastures, but well worth it. Distinctive red clay layers are different than many of the other basaltic waterfalls. Plus you get Litlanesfoss on the hike up as a reward as well.

Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, 128 meters. It is located in Hengifossá in Fljótsdalshreppur, East Iceland. It is surrounded by basaltic strata with thin, red layers of clay between the basaltic layers. Fossilized trunks of coniferous trees, sensitive to cold, and lignite, which depict warmer climates during the latter part of Tertiary. Further down the Hengifossá river is Litlanesfoss, notable for the columnar jointed volcanics around it. Hengifoss is the most popular hiking site in East Iceland with path leading from the parking lot to the falls. It takes 40–60 minutes to walk to the waterfall.

Very cool waterfall with interesting surrounding rock formations. The hike up took us about 25 minutes - it is quite steep but there are metal grates along the path to keep you from sliding in hiking in the rain (like we did). We visited in September and it was fairly busy but we had no trouble parking.

Iceland... the land of waterfalls. Hengifoss is Iceland’s third highest waterfall (128 m). Nearby you will also see the towering Litlanesfoss waterfall, the cascade is framed by giant hexagonal basalt columns. The hike takes about two hours in total and is absolutely worth it. The views are like no other. Exceptionally beautiful and wonderful for the soul.

Its a steeper uphill hike in the beginning, then sort of flattens out for a while. Youll pass a couple other falls along the way. To get really close to Hengifoss you have to climb your way through a lot of rocks, some areas are quite tricky and some slippery. Or just end the hike where you see the actual trail end, youll still be able to see it.If you get a day where the sun is out (or at least fog is high enoughyou can see the red stripes along the rocks.A round trip for us took about 2.5 hours, but we took a mini break for a packed lunch along the route and stopped for photos.

Short but beautiful hike with a good view and an impressive waterfall at the end. Its roughly one hour up and 30min down. The weather was changing quiet often and one minute you can clearly look at the waterfall and the other minute it is totally foggy. So if you dont see anything, just wait a few minutes or enjoy my picture.

What you see at first sight is wad you see at last just that you get a full glimpse of the falls. You gotta hike a 2.5km crossing by 3 small fenced gates to reach to hengifoss. On the way you will come across a few streams of the same and named differently depending on the formation of rocks.

Its a beautiful waterfall and you have to hike a bit to see it. We parked the car at the tourist parking and started our trek towards the waterfall. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the falls. The trail might be muddy if it had rained/snowed.It takes approximately 3 hours up and down but it is definitely worth it.

The hike towards the waterfall is tough, but i belive eveyone is able to do it if you have enough time. Took me 1hr 15mins to get there but it was worth it. Took abt 300 photos on the way up, stop every 5mins and you will eventually get there. Wear shoe for crossing river, muds, gravel and rocks. Definitely a A-class waterfall.

Great hike but the first kilometer or so will be an uphill battle the rest is easy and flat. The start of the trail is right by the parking area - theres a toilet by the parking area. The waterfalls itself is great worth every sweat. It was warm and wear cover or sunscreen as the sun can get intense as youre in the highlands. I dont think you can get really close to the base of the waterfall as I do not see people try to as it was not really accessible even without signs or safety warnings - use common sense.

Nice walk to a cool waterfall that is far enough away from anything that we were nearly the only people there. We were there at the end of March, and there was still quite a lot of snow, but managed to get almost right up to the bottom of the waterfall with just regular hiking boots. The walk itself probably took around 30 minutes up. Everyone else stopped quite a distance away from the waterfall and took photos, but there were tracks heading closer, where it got a little steeper, and we followed them without any problems.

Notable for being the third highest of the many waterfalls of Iceland. Nice walk up to the waterfall: You walk a moderate track past Litlanesfoss, probably a more beautiful waterfall than Hengifoss. Track can be slippery after rain.

Wonderful waterfall.Very steep hike going to the waterfall but otherwise once you get halfway to the viewing point...you can make it the rest! FYI--You do not get to walk right up to the waterfall due to the river/rocks.
