One of the few nature reserves with good amenities! A strange drive to find the main entrance, but a beautiful reserve with plenty parking and picnic spots. Hiked the Leopard loop, which has very few flat spots to rest your legs, so be prepared to walk uphill all the way 😅 The top gives a breathtaking view of the Helderberg region, with a wonderful stream that provides shade and refreshing water at the beginning of your descent.
My very first visit and did a short hike. Cant wait to get back and do one of the other hiking trails. There’s plenty of fynbos and wildlife. Beautiful view and amazingly clean rest rooms😊
What a wonderful place. Quiet, great trails, good value. This will become a favourite place
Fantastic place for long & short hikrs with beautiful views of Somerset West. Veld is recovering from recent fire & they had to cut down old oak trees because of Shothole borer. But still lots to see and great facilities, clean toilets and great new Education Centre with roof garden
Always refreshing going hiking here. The trails are clearly marked with different colored arrows for each route on the sides to help navigate the trail.
Been going to this wonderful reserve for years. You can buy an annual membership card for individuals and families...well worth it if you live in the area or visit regularly. This weekend I visited for the first time since the fire in June. The reserve was ravaged but signs of new growth are everywhere. Gloriously green ferns and other hardy plants blanket the ground. The abundant watsonias are going to be stunning when they flower.Kudos to staff and volunteers for all their work in getting the trails sorted so we can hike. They are not done with the work yet, but I spent a few peaceful hours meandering through the reserve. Sometimes it was eerily quiet, sometimes I heard birdsong. And here and there a pop of pretty colour as flowers emerge from the scorched ground. The new Eco Centre is amazing. I need to make time to visit it properly.
One of the nicest hiking spots. Sad to see how it is now after the fires but still beautiful! Safe and the trails are easy to follow! Friendly staff aswell! Thank you
Did this hike after a long time and the changes were evident all over. The hike was pleasant and there is a wide range to choose from. The view of Strand, Somerset West and Gordons Bay is phenomenal.Ample parking and lovely picnic spotsTry to go there. There is something for everyone.
Very nice place to relax on weekends. Great hiking trails and beautiful gardens. Nice place also for a picnic and the facilities are in great shape and well taken care of
Beautiful nature reserve that captures part of the Western Cape Fynbos Biosphere. There a number of hikes of various distances and stunning views across Gordons Bay.
Amazingly beautiful backdrops of mountains, streams through low lying forests and a walk out in the open air makes this an ideal location for picnics, walks or hikes. It is great for all age groups. There is a small entrance fee. Neat, tidy and safe picnic area.
Well managed reserve on the fringes of suburbia. Accessible to all with well maintained hiking or running trails. Excellent information centre, friendly informed staff and a range of hiking options for the beginner and the expert. Beautiful views within forests and over the mountains and false bay. Views that include suburbia, wine farms, mountains and ocean all in one shot. Plentiful birds, fynbos and other fauna and flora to be seen.
Loved the wildness of nature in this Reserve. The little paths inside gives you no choice of taking a risk to see where youll find yourself next. The marked trails are beautiful and so many people use this for a late afternoon (before closing time @ 17h30to walk, run or meet someone just for a stroll. We will go back for more, thank you.
Beautiful place, well maintained paths, friendly staff, great views.
A great place to bring the family and friends for picnics and hikes ranging from easy to hard! You will be rewarded with 360° views if you can reach The Dome Summit!!
Beautiful nature reserve good for picnics with the family and kids, hike or run and and of course climbing the mountains.I go for the exercise, run/hike if you feel like doing the same or would like to go often I would recommend getting a year pass, only R160 so if you plan to to go more than 3 or 4 times in a year rather get the year pass.
Beautiful scenery. Great place to get in some fresh air and take a walk. There are a variety of paths to choose from (depending on your fitness level). You can also just visit for a family picnic under beautiful big trees on lush grass. Entrance fee is not unreasonable and membership is also an option.
Had a nice relaxing picnic meeting here, beautiful place indeed
Very relaxing atmosphere. Hiking trails and huge picnic areas. Gate fees R25pp and R15 per car.
A well kept little nature reserve. Very close to Cape Town, a great escape to Nature. Lots of picnic areas down at the bottom, and hiking trails further up.Amazing panoramic views of Muizenberg to Stellenbosch, if you are willing to hike to the top. It is quite a steep hike, so I suggest starting early in the morning.Water is not readily available, only 1 or 2 streams, that may not flow well during summer. Depending on the rainfall. So make sure to take some with.
Beautiful scenery, it’s a wonderful place to go walking/hiking, even by yourself you feel safe there.
Great hiking trails , especially for beginner hikers . Also great place for picnics with family . The main information center is undergoing renovation and will be much bigger and better with a restaurant and coffee shop.
It is a lovely nature reserve with some great views and decent trails. Good spot to do picnics and enjoy the nature.
Great safe space for hiking picnic and family day. Clean kept ablutions.Various trails 👣 easy to hard.Plenty safe parking
Beautiful nature reserve with sustainable projects being undertaken to encourage more use of this beautiful reserve, the facilities is well maintained with a picknic area next a stream and pond, there are jungle gyms for kids and if you want to hike there are many trails to choose from, bird life is abundant and mammals can be spotted throughout the reserve near in mind that an entrance fee is charged at the main gate.
Great place to go hiking that is still very close to Cape Town itself. Small entry fee per person and then per car, but you can park outside as you can walk in as well. They are busy building and working on the amenities, so its quite dirty and rough. Lots of trails from easy to hard and short to long. At the moment the resturant is closed, but will probably change around December. If you like to hike, make sure to tick this one off your list.
Beautiful natural place to hike with a refreshing water stream
A hidden gem! Went for a 5km hike in this fabulous reserve - the weather played along, and the scenery is stunning. The proteas in bloom were a real treat. I’ll visit again, and maybe attempt the mountain next time 😄
Great hiking trail for active hikers. Clean premises with well taken care lawn for lovely Sunday picnics.
Unbelievable hiking experience.A little winter rain storm damage on mountain trails but still a great experience..
An amazing place to walk or hike. Not too busy like lions head or T Mountain. Various routes up the mountain. R25 per person. We were not fit enough to make it to the top this time but will definitely be back to try again. We went most of the way up the very steep side and back down again and it took 4 hours there and back. Ensure you take water and shoes with a fair amount of grip. They also have lovely grass lawns to picnic at the bottom. They have a restaurant as well but it is currently closed.
Gorgeous views, very clean park. The trails range in difficulty and are clearly marked. I really enjoyed my hike there!
Amazing views and lovely climbs through a lot of protea bushes is what you will have here.Very steep and slipery walk around the protea trail with a mixture of gravel and clay. All the way around. But with it for the views that you get
Great, well marked trails from easy to hard difficulty. Probably millions of proteas with an amazing view. Better to come early as parking can be an issue.
Beautiful hidden hiking trail . After a hike you can have a picnic or just relax in the pic nice area with your group. There is a on site cafe as well . Ample parking for cars . Only issue is at the main gate they do not have card facilitaties so I reccommend anyone to carry cash.
Lots of trails, easy and challenging but the absolute satisfaction to be in nature is so good! Parking is not a problem if youre a member!
Always wonderful going here. Huge grass area to have a picnic or play some games. Ample shaded areas. Beautiful hiking trails. Wonderful place to take the family. Only negative was the restrooms which wasnt too clean and looked like a building site
Space to relax in the lawns, hikes of varied intensity and a cafe/restaurant. Ample parking with most of it inside, but you will need to pay extra. We parked just outside the gate and walked in.The main trails are reasonably well marked, but it you wander off the main trails the route can become confusing. When planning your hike, pay special attention to the change of elevation shown on the map. The climb after the Sugarbird loop becomes quite steep.Bathroom facilities on site.
First time at Helderberg Nature reserve. The views are majestic. Great trails for everyone. Also has spots to picnic and play with the little humans. Love it. Definitely going back.
Amazing, they offer:Guided hikesNight hikesThere is also so much one can do there - walking trails of all levels.Trail running - its becoming a more frequent sight, trail runners in the evening before they Close at 20H00 till Feb.Great for all ages, especially for the little ones that like to explore
A beautiful hide away piece of cape nature right in Somerset West. A popular spot for my family and I. We are here almost every second day to walk through a forest or the Sugarbird trail. Safe to walk by yourself!
Absolutely beautiful! Entrance was R20 (adults.Restaurant on site next to an exquisite pond. Picnic areas available too. The hiking trails sit amongst the incredible Cape Town flora. As you approach the mountain, the road gets steep- A great challenge with rewarding views! Majority, however, suited for all ages and fitness levels.
Its a great Reserve, there are ample picnic spots as you enter the reserve which is great for small children. There is also a nice little restaurant and cafe with the basics. The reserve itself is massive with a number of walkways, and a good spot for birding. There are good sites for those who wish to photograph dragonflies and other animals.Bring enough water and sunblock is a must.
😊What a lovely bit of nature to enjoy. At the foot of the impressive Helderberg nestles this reserve with all its plants and little streams. You will not find the big five here, but put on your close up eyes and enjoy the miracle of fynbos. Full consciousness brings true enjoyment and this may be found closer to the ground than higher up.Round off your visit to the on the spot restaurant. Their Apple strudle is to die for.... the Deutsche touch makes it wunderbahr.Helderberg Nature Reserve is a 398-hectare nature reserve in Somerset West, Cape Town, South Africa. This nature reserve is located on the southern slopes of the Helderberg mountains. Its 398 ha consist mostly of “Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos” with smaller patches of “Boland Granite Fynbos” and “Southern Afrotemperate Forest".😊
What an amazing place for a day out with friends and family, thy have something for everyone. If you want to hike, no matter your preference thy have you covered, from easy walks to advanced hikes up the mountain. If you want to picnic, thy have an area for that.Every Sunday thy have a sunset concert.
Lovely place to have a picnic! Lots of space for kids to run around and even a small jungle gym. There is a coffee shop if picnicking is not your thing. Walk around the duckpond with the kids or select one of the routes to take a walk or hike. Dont forget to visit the info centre!
Went for a hike up the Protea with some friends. Great views all along the path and although I suffered up due to a lack of fitness, would definitely want to do another hike like this in future. The scenery is worth the effort. There is a coffe shop and an information centre. The picnic areas are well maintained with lots of grass areas for kids to play. There are some jungle gyms as well. Also saw in the coffee shop details of concerts in the reserve. Can only think it should be fun when surrounded by this picturesque scenery. One of the lowest priced nature reserves in the area too, that I know about. Make sure to give it a visit.
Beautiful, and rather pristine flora, wonderful birdlife. Many hiking trails. Cute coffee shop. Lovely lawns for picnics & a game of rugby or soccer with kids ... & Bathrooms are well maintained & clean
