Hej Roastery & Coffee House in Sandwīp
Description
Privilege
Avoid the coffee experience! My partner and I attended the coffee experience several months back and it was honestly the most disappointing experience I have ever been on.Andrea, the host, directed the whole experience to an older gentleman outside our group and only managed to make eye contact with me a total of 3 times. Im not sure what his reasoning was for this, but quite frankly this came across extremely rude and disrespectful. The three-hour talk could have easily been cut down to one hour or two as this fell very boring very quickly; however, this could have also been down to the fact that there was no engagement or inclusivity. I didnt expect to leave the experience feeling frustrated and insulted but unfortunately, that was the case. The whole experience is ridiculously overpriced and I feel horrified having paid £120 to watch a man read from a book, occasionally showing a picture to one of the other guests. I have since emailed Hej asking to speak to customer support and have not received any reply. An all-round disappointing service.
MoreI kept postponing giving it a review because of the business was probably struggling through lockdown, but it just feels like the this place has gone from bad to worse.Subpar, overpriced coffee, 50% of the time they will burn the coffee. If it’s more than 5 people in the shop, get ready to wait a long time.Bakery products not great either.Worst of all, they try to portray themselves as a Swedish brand with Scandi elements, but there’s nothing Swedish about it - not the owners, not the staff, not the food or coffee.Invest in training your staff, is it that hard?Update: waited 20 mins for the coffee, only to be told that they lost our order and we just wasted our time.
MoreI really want to like this place since we live nearby and it’s got a great vibe (lots of seating, good music, well decorated- but the service is just awful! We waited 20 minutes for coffees only to find out they lost our order. There are so many people working here but they just seem so disorganised and like they don’t coordinate with each other. Head up to Bermondsey street for better options!
MoreSuperb coffee, roasted by the Hej team too, perfect flavour notes and made lovingly by baristas who know what their doing! Great foodie items too, along with snacks & pastries. Perhaps a hidden gem off the bustling Elephant & Castle main roads but this one is very much worth every step in the walk there -- top marks! 5 outta 5!
MoreAbsolutely inedible eggs benedict. Bread was so stale we couldn’t cut through it. Don’t get me started on the rest.
MoreGood coffee and food. Lovely service. Nice working environment too.
Lovely coffee, attentive staff and lots of seating, dog friendly with a water bowl and treats. Great selection of pastries and sandwiches, highly recommend
MoreVery disappointed with my recent visit to Hej, haven’t been for a few months and the vibes and atmosphere have completely changed. The staff were rude and unhelpful, several of the things we asked for were not in stock and the chef was very bold in stating how he would refuse to assist and make anything else to match dietary requirements. They mentioned they were understaffed and that a delivery hadn’t come in but sadly i still don’t think this is an excuse for the treatment we were given. Felt extremely uncomfortable the whole time and don’t think we will sadly be able to return which is a shame.
MoreAtmosphere is very nice and cool. I love their design. Coffee is also good only the cakes need improvement I believe but in total I like it.
MoreGets 2stars purely because the staff were friendly. Coffee was fair, but the biggest problem for me was the fact they dont take cash, so obviously they are not open to everyone. A cashless society is not for me. I wont be coming back.
MoreThe coffee at this place is yum (but make sure you ask for extra hot or else it tends to be warm rather than hotand its comfortable and pleasant inside. But their food is so outrageously expensive - Im always taken aback by the price of the sausage rolls!
MoreQuick friendly service, decent food. Free Wifi with ok speed. Decent bathrooms. Good for a quick classic unpretentious coffee shop.
MoreGood coffee and nice pastries! Staff are really nice. Perfect place for studying and even has some sockets available for charging.
MoreIf I could put 0 stars I would ordered and paid coffees they charged me immediately but they never sent me the coffees and after 3 emails to them I still wait for an answer as they completely ignore me 1 month after they got my money to send me nothing
MorePoor food and service is hit and miss. Toast and muffins stale and burned. Hot chocolate tasted sour. Coffee is average. 2 stars for location and facilities.
MoreMy partner and I did the coffee experience at Hej at Elephant and Castle a few weeks ago. We learnt so much about the entire process of coffee, from growing to fermenting to roasting and finally to cupping, it was truly eye-opening - and delicious coffee! We especially enjoyed Andreas enthusiasm and willingness to answer every question of ours. Thank you for an excellent day!
MorePost swimming with toddler brunch. Delicious bacon brioche and sausage rolls. Plus games to distract young ones. Nice staff too.
Morethe best coffee in Elephant or even central London. Scrumptious cakes and sandwiches. Freshly roasted coffee smell unbeatable. Additional bonus you can borrow bicycle pump
MoreLovely place. Very friendly too. I recommend the special coffees too. In fact I think they are expanding to a coffee based cocktail and draft beer so can now cater beyond coffee and tea. Enjoy!
MoreAmazing coffee - roasted on site! The place smells amazing - the smell of fresh coffee and of fresh food is incredibly comforting. Friendly staff and good wifi- definitely recommend
MoreLucky the bacon rolls are top tier. After half-a-dozen trips, can say I have never met such a persistently unhappy/rude bunch of staff. Comedic when juxtaposed with the "always served with a smile" banner plastered outside the front.
MoreStaff are really rude and make you feel like they are doing you a favour by allowing you to come in and get a coffee. I slid my face mask down for a split second to use my Apple Pay so I could pay for my coffee and pastry (so I can support your business and was rudely told to not remove my mask. I understand there are COVID rules in place to protect everyones safety but there Is a way of speaking to people without talking down to them, it also wouldnt hurt to use your common sense and understand that by removing the mask for such a short period of time isnt going to put any threat on to you especially when Im so far away from you and no one else in the shop at the time. I was also told you dont take American Express or cash so had to try a third method of payment to try and pay. Will not be back!
MoreFriendly, warm and welcoming. A fantastic place to come to visit whether it be for a quick stop to grab a coffee or to stay and have a meal. Their food is always of the highest standard and the evolving menu is brilliant.During lockdown it has the one place that has kept me sane! Hygiene levels are always on point.
MoreNice neighbourhood coffee shop. Really lovely big space and their deck is awesome in warm weather. Its a great spot to bring your laptop and work as well with a nice vibe and pleasant atmosphere. Great chai too - not too sweet and very smooth.
MoreBest coffee in south east London and superb customer service. Big up Ed, Jonny, Frank, Lydia and Andrea you guys are massive credit to the company. Nothing but love for this place.
MoreThe location is really nice and calm. Just good to be there, relax and have a nice cup of coffee with a friend.BTW the coffee was bloody delicious. The people are very kind there and frankly the barista knows what hes doing.😊
MoreHej is great! The coffee is always delicious and I buy the beans for use at home. They have loads of different varieties so I get to try different origin beans all the time
MoreThe staff here are so rude and unwelcoming. It makes you feel as if it is a burden to spend money there. The food is pretty average and the coffee is nice. However, check your coffee before you take it away as we have had the wrong coffee several times.
MoreThe coffee was very good as usual, as was the service too. However, neither of the staff today were wearing face coverings and I did find that concering. They really should be wearing face coverings for their own safety and for the safety of customers too.
MoreAs we live in a building right across the street from Hej, we had hopeful expectations for our first visit. We arrived and the cafe was quite busy, there was no seating outside but we wanted to take away anyways, so this was no issue!A man came to the counter to take our order, and first asked if we would like to stay or take away, before we could respond he abruptly said “ Well there’s no seating outside, so you’re taking away.” We said no problem, we want to take away anyways! This was no issue. It was clear the barista working the till was annoyed prior to our arrival, however we tried our best to continue to be courteous. We ordered a long black, as well as a cappuccino with oat milk and vanilla. We moved over to wait for the drinks, and overheard the man who took our order explaining to the barista on bar that we had ordered “ a long black and a ‘LATTE’ with vanilla”.Wanting to save everyone’s time, my partner corrected the barista, saying “oh it was a cappuccino”, to which the man who took our order responded “Oh, a CAPPUCINO it is” shouting at us across the till. It was such a jarring experience as we really had continued to be calm and collected the entire time, unsure where this attitude and unwarranted frustration was coming from. The drinks that we did receive were fine, however the experience left a bad taste in our mouths... literally. We are disappointed to have experienced this at Hej, as we had high hopes of being frequent customers because of proximity. However, we will not be returning.
MoreStopped here for a post-lockdown coffee. Coffee is great and weve enjoyed sitting out in the sunshine. The cafe is well prepared with regards to hygiene, social distancing, etc. We felt as safe as you can be sitting here and will be coming back again soon.
MoreThe coffee is spot on, not too hot and really beautiful taste. The lovely guy with the purple Martyn Ashfield bike goes above and beyond to accommodate customers wished.(moved chairs and table just so I could sit on my preferred side on the TerrasseTHATS what five star customer service looks like!. Will always be back.
MoreLovely members of staff!Never had a chance to sit inside as COVID is around but once Im able to, Ill definitely revisit.Spacious inside with lovely dimmed lights.Outside theres a benched seating area on looking the roastery which was nice for relaxing whilst drinking a hot beverage.
MoreLively & active community place, café with on the spot roaster. But its also a classical pub-like corner, the menu gives burgers and cocktails too. Breakfast and lunch also av.Contemporary enteriour, great staff, bit loud music, but altogether it gives a very authentic "londoner" feeling & a good dynamic taste! It was a typical rush hour and the saucer & glass was a bit not so clean, I have to admit.. :/
MoreExcellent coffee shop set in a pleasant location, superb coffee & cocktails selection, quality food & cakes and a great atmosphere. The interior decor is all to a high standard and the outdoor seating area by the trees is a bonus. Recommended to visit!
MoreFinally had a chance to try this branch of Hej. Place has great potential as my coffee was perfect and the staff very friendly. Great space to work on your laptop. Fast WiFi and you can stare outside if you want a break :)
MoreYou feel like youre in an actual Scandinavian country. The folk-style music, dimly lit atmosphere, and clean decor are all in line with the name. Its the perfect spot to bring your notebook or laptop and get creative work done. The coffee is smooth, the staff is efficient, and the view outside is quietly pleasant. Will definitely return.
MoreSo coffee was drinkable, but that’s all. Nice interior. Keep your dishes clean :)
MoreI spent the day here recently and had a mixed experience.Pros:-nice atmosphere-broad selection on the menu-good WiFiCons:-I waited an hour for my breakfast and eventually went up and complained. Turned out they had forgotten-both the breakfast and lunch were mediocre at best-the music was awful. I heard the same songs played ten times each. I dont know how the staff dont lose their minds-not cheapIts a good addition to the neighbourhood and Im happy to support local businesses rather than another chain, but they need to iron out a few kinks. Im not likely to come back again soon, but Ill try to come back some day and see if I have a better experience.
MoreLike many of the other reviewers I found the overall service to be underwhelming. The male barista seems to offer basic good service with a smile to conventionally attractive customers, so the better looking ones amongst us get a better deal. The coffee is fine, the food average. If this weren’t the only cafe around I’d go elsewhere.
MoreNice design and decor. Dog friendly.Excellent A/C. BUT staff are unfriendly and service exceptionally slow. Sometimes they simply forget the order completely! I hate giving a poor review especially as this area doesn’t have many cafes. Hope the management get to grips with the problem.
MoreLovely coffee shop with both indoor and outdoor seating. Menu offers a good range of affordable and tasty options which has increased since it opened :staff are friendly and welcoming. Good range of seating options For whatever you’re looking for. Board games available to borrow. Welcoming to dogs with water bowl and treats at the door. Takeaway available.
MoreAn absolute favourite of ours. The staff is lovely and the place is welcoming. The coffee is fantastic and Im a happy vegan with what they have on offer (although Im definitely up for MORE cake!)
MoreA friend recommended Hej... and for good reason! Great venue, pleasant staff, roasters, retail space, home to several digital nomads. Highly recommend. I may make this my home away from home!
MoreLovely breakfast, hollandaise was delicious! great coffee made perfectly (velvety and smooth). Good atmosphere too
MoreMy son recommended Hej Roasters to me as Im always on the look out for dog friendly places.Great local place, very clean and spacious, tasty toasted sandwiches and friendly staff. Archie was delighted with his free dog treat.
MoreGreat place for a coffee, cake and a bite to eat!Super dog friendly, with good ambiance and friendly staff.I come here to study and it’s a perfect spot!
MoreNice local coffee shop, good setting and atmosphere, minutes from East Street market. Coffee was average, as was the cinnamon bun, one person serving and making drinks meant a fairly slow service. £6.60 for a small latte and a cinnamon bun is probably too steep, even for a hipster joint
MoreJust like their bermondsey sq branch, its all very slick but the coffee is terrible. Bitter and amateur. I mean just LOOK at that flat white
MoreA perfect addition to the neighbourhood- breakfast with House roasted coffee, pastries and toasted sandwiches, and booze and beer on tap for evenings.
