Heimatschutzzentrum in der Villa Patumbah - Tourist attraction in Herisau, Switzerland
Sehr gut erhaltenes, einzigartiges Baudenkmal mit vertäumtem Park. Eine eigentliche Stadtoase.
The museum was between exhibits when I visited so I only had access to two rooms off the entrance. One room features photos and historical documents regarding the proprietors experience in Sumatra. The other room has a few chairs and features a lengthy film in Swiss German regarding the restoration of the villa around 2011. The excellent air conditioning and detail of the film compelled me to sit through the entire film. The film shows the condition of the villa prior to restoration and the restoration process. There are interviews with a number of restorers that document the complexity and challenges. Even if you dont speak German the film is worth viewing. The grounds of the villa are beautiful with many specimen trees and shrubs. There are a number of aucubas and palms that lend a tropical sensibility. Locals appear to favor the grounds for exercising dogs off leash. There are benches to sit on. The clam shells in the center of the fountain are inspired.
Schöne Villa und Garten. Interessante kleine Ausstellung.
Really nice building and worthwhile to visit, and also to chill there.
The most beautiful villa in Zürich 🌸 specially in springtime
Came across this completely by accident, while walking around looking for the Botanical garden. The villa itself is splendid, but I did not go in. I chose to spend some time in the garden which was splendid, even if it was still winter. Splendid statues, lovingly cared for trees and plants, green and quiet. Loved my find.
I had hoped to learn a bit about the Swiss participation in the Dutch colonies in whats now Indonesia, but the information provided in this museum is disorganized and only in German (with some snippets in French). From what I could gather from my limited German, the consensus is that Grobs participation is "controversial" and that conditions were "harsh." I dont feel that this is a fair representation and left with a bad taste. It would have been nice to see an exhibition with a clear narrative, including artifacts and interactivity that supports the story being told, rather than disjoint panels with swaths of text, computers for self-guided research and books to leaf through.I feel that the two films provided could have a better placement in the tour. In particular, the film that shows Indonesia then vs. now could be narrated, subtitled and presented in a larger space with seating. Its odd that the film that gets any space for this concerns the renovation of the building and has seating just for two.All told, I felt so underwhelmed with the information offered that I went home to watch a documentary on the East Indies afterwards. The building itself is pretty, but the upper floors can only be seen with a tour in Swiss German upon reservation. I didnt find tremendous amount of information concerning the style of the building, although I may have simply overlooked it.The garden is free to the public and pleasant for a little stroll, but its odd that there are other apartments directly adjacent to it.The main entrance façade is currently in scaffolding.
Very interesting to see the huge renovation of this house. Well done. Small museum but nice. They have a film, 1hr, that tells you many things about the house and the owner. Ask to see the upper part since they have it close. Of course the garden is great in summer and you can visit any time free.
Interesting glimpse into the life of a 19th century tobacco trader and the house he built to show his wealth.
nice garden - interesting expos
Beautiful villa inspired by Patumbah island in Indonesia. Good place to go for a walk
Old villa with a quirky exhibition and a nice park. 🌳
Couldnt go inside today. However I just live the lovely nooks and crannies of this place. One cannot take a bad picture here. 🤗
Villa Patumbah is a really fantastic gem of the last century in a wonderful park. An oasis of peace inmidst of city
Villa Patumbah is one of those spots a bit out of the traditional touristic routes in Zürich. The villa hosts a permanent small exhibition on architecture in Switzerland. Sometimes it also hosts thematic exhibitions at the -1 floor. The most beautiful part is the garden which is a public one and its open every day from morning to sunset. A quiet oasis.
Ein wunderschöner Ort♡
Very lovely place to enjoy a peaceful view in sun, very suitable for family.
Beautiful garden to just chill and enjoy the sun 🌞
Oasis of peace in Seefeld, Zurich
Great colonial-era villa and chilling garden, however upstairs was not accessible :(
Beautiful building and garden!
Beautiful building very close to the botanical garden, entry for both attractions is free
Did not have opportunity to go into building, but very nice gardens for a zit down and a break.
Gorsellik
Nice place to visit.
The visual definition of opulence. Although not completely restored, the villa still gives the public an insight into the plantation owners wealth as well as the great imagination and knowledge of the architects who built and designed this extraordinary house.
Nothing worth seeing or paying the entrance fee of 10 CHF per person
Free to visit park. Nice
Soffitti lignei o affrescati in ogni sala . Giardino godibilissimo e ben curato .
A nice stopover either from or to the Zurich Botanical gardens. The main building is lovely and its worth it to spend half an hour in the garden...
Great place for an architectural tour of Zurich, feel free to go inside the garden
When we went to see Villa Patumbah, only the ground level and basement were open as the upstairs was roped off, so we didn’t see anything that other visitors had shown in their pictures like the stained glass ceiling. The ground level was just a room of various old fashioned door knobs with keys and the basement was just color swatches and paint brushes. Pretty disappointing.
beautiful park
We really enjoyed the excursion through the villa. It is so nicely preserved and there its disighn us so rich on details and styles! It must be one of the best in Zurich!
Nice villa and park. Interesting Exhibitions inside.
Nice:)
Beautiful historic building inspired by colonial times. Opulent tapestry and painted ceilings. Sitting in its original park with the vegetable patches now built up with apartment blocks.
Absolutely beautiful villa combining european and asian elements built by business man Fürchtegott Grob who made a fortune with tobacco in Sumatra.
ABSOLUTELY WORTH A VISIT!
To not miss in April (garden in flowers)
Lovely find while walking up towards the botanic gardens. A group of cyclists appeared to have stayed overnight or visited early in the morning. I just really enjoyed walking the grounds and taking photos of the brilliant architecture.
