Hecho en Casa - Puerto Rican restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Small cozy place with social distancing still in mind and great customer service made this visit a great experience. I had only a few items from the menu because my appetite was small but they were all very delicious. Price seemed a little high but that was to be expected during these times when commodities and supply chains are disrupted by the pandemic. So no fault there.
We chose this place because it looked like it just opened for lunch and it didnt have many clients yet. We were greeted roughly by the waitress already saying she was very busy with other customers. As for the food, it wasnt anything great. The pasta was tasteless, the chicken breast was dry and burnt and the beans were runny. The wait was too long for the amount of people they had in the restaurant. Save yourself the trouble, go somewhere else.
Worst customer service, enough to make us leave with only water. The waitress needs to fix her hideous attitude. As soon as we got there, she was rushing us to order and was being extremely rude. As well as the bathroom being disgustingly dirty and had no toilet paper, or paper towels. Save your time and money.
I feel that three stars is being generous. The food took forever to come out. That waitress was very rude and unfriendly. Apparently the fryer broke and the burger that we ordered took an hour to come out. Our waitress was apologetic but in a fake way. She never offered us something else instead of the burger because it would be this long. She was very abrupt and never came to check on us if we needed anything. The food was just average at best. I would only come to this restaurant if your willing to wait all day for mediocre food and bad service.
If i could give 0 stars i would. I came here with a party of 6. The rest of the area is open 100% capacity. They made us split our party up into three. The waitress had an attitude that was out of this world. We all placed our orders. When the food arrived she basically threw the dishes on the table. Not only that, but everyones dish was on the colder side. Mind you, it was not so busy at the time. The drinks tasted like they had no alcohol in them either. The service made this experience VERY disappointing. She did not come back and even see how everything was or if we needed anything else or needed a refill. I would not recommend coming here at all! Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere!!
Not even one star is deserved! No. This is not made at home. This is not Puerto Rico. Starting with our "host&waiter". Who displayed tone and body language; at all time, as if she didnt want to serve us. Food is from COSTCO or SAM. Wings where pre cooked baged-wings. The so called filled tostones, where 4 one 🍤 filled tostones topped with a thin slice of lemon. We paid two twenties. Not a first choice.
Im giving it a 5 star on the food only. Service is slow and unorganized but honestly the white rice and beans were the best of the area along with the other foods I will list. The Churrasco had a very nice seasoning and taste, with some crisp to the meat but also not over cooked. The tostones were great, not served crispy but I cant decide how I like them (crispy or softer). Alcapurrio and pastallios were also very good and authentic with well seasoned meat. I cant speak on the mofongo. The pina colada was lacking but again, the food is flavorful and authentic.
I just ate in this restaurant as I was walking by and needed to eat. On arrival, the reception was somewhat brusk but I ignored it in keeping with a “maybe it’s not real” attitude. Once I sat down, the server continued to act as if I was inconveniencing her. Again I ignored it, ordered a drink and full meal. The server continued to be somewhat hostile to the point I asked her “have I made you angry?” She said it’s her English.... bull. Eventually my food came and it was OK, i’d say 7/10. At no time during my whole time in the restaurant did a server voluntarily come to my table.... for any reason. Not to see if I needed anything, was satisfied or otherwise. When it came time to pay the bill, a different server brought me the bill and asked “are you going to tip?” That’s the first time in my life i’ve Been asked that. I asked her “do you think I should? And Why do you ask?” She said “I ask everybody.” None of the servers should be serving. They need a different job. The service here is terrible to the point I am writing this... just a unnecessaryly bad experience.
Drinks are good, food comes out cold and the waitress was super rude barely comes to check on her customers and has a whole attitude for no reason. First thing that needs to change is the waiter.
I must be honest and write that the mofongo I had that day was delicious and I enjoyed it. Made a quick stop to get some lunch in and I was not disappointed. The decor gives this restaurant a nice touch, the charm of Old San Juan just adds more to this location. I wouldnt mind making another stop at this restaurant again.
Had a wonderful lunch at the Hecho en Casa, I had the chicken breast with chimichurri sauce. In the past Ive had their mofongo, it was wonderful. Always great food and service. We will be back!
I would give this restaurant a 2 for the food, and one or less for the service. We were three at the table, and the food came out for two of us 50 minutes after we ordered it and my food didn’t come out. And when my food finally did come out half of it was cold so she had to take it back to heat it which meant another 10 minutes and my companions were finished eating by then. Our appetizer was out 40 min later and only because I asked where it was.
Very welcoming and friendly place. The lunch chicken special with yuca and salad was delicious and a bargain at $8.99. Low key vibe with music not too loud and seats by the window to watch the world go by. Recommended.
Great food with a casual atmosphere.
Tasty food in a charming setting.(Agree with some other reviews that its not the fastest place, so probably not great if youre in a rush.)
The place seemed to be very understaffed and/or poorly managed. We waited for close to 10 minutes before anyone even said hello. It was over 45 minutes until we got our food and took another 15 minutes for us to get the check and finally pay. Food was pretty good but we walked in starving and had almost finished our drinks by the time the food came.
This is the worst dining experience I have ever had in my entire life. The service staff is rude, the food is tragic. We ordered chips and guacamole and the guacamole came out and it was frozen in the center!! The food took over an hour to come out and each dish that arrived was more depressing than the next. Food was ice cold, rice came out in prepackaged plastic containers that were likely microwaved before serving. I cannot begin to explain how terrible this place is and cannot imagine how they have such a high rating on here. Please do not go to this place and hit the Burger King a block down the road!Had to edit my review after paying the check!!My experience gets even better!!! I raised my concerns to the owner and he admitted he did not care!!Unbelievable.
The manager came over to us a few different times to check in on us. We werent 100% sure if wed eat there so wanted to pace ourselves by starting with a drink and some chips and salsa. We ended up staying and did have a good meal.
Stopped here on part of a food tour. Mofongo is excellent!
I have passed this place many times but never stopped in. Craving a Pina Colada, I ordered one here. Excellent! Just exactly what I wanted. The art work on the walls is unique as it belongs to an artist who has an affinity with the moody big eye illustrations. Adds charm to the high ceilings of classic Spanish architecture in Old San Juan. I have to return for the eats as this trip was short but dont doubt the food will be worth it. This is a great place to sit at opening to observe what is passing by on the. cobblestones. Very scenic and definitely romantic at night.
Came in for a quick lunch and left stuffed and happy. The food is cooked with love and it comes out in the flavor. I swear I was taken back to when I was a child eating grandmas cooking. Everything tastes like "home." Their rice and beans are amazing, but the desserts are to DIE FOR!!! A+ service.
The mojito was good but the server was EXTREMELY rude and pushy. 👎
Service was amazing, atmosphere was what we were hoping for out of a San Juan Caribbean restaurant. The chicken mofongo was the best on island!
Very good mofongo, it might be the best Ive ever had. No AC, but plenty of fans. Service was slow. Cool looking place though.
The food was the best we had on the island. So incredibly delicious and Joe was AMAZING. Took such pride in the dishes and was so pleased when we practically cleaned our plates!!!! Definitely a must!
DEFINITELY not permanently closed like Google maps says. Ate here today while staying out of a tropical downpour and had great mojitos, flan and Mofongo ens Pulpo. Great place!
Choco burger was amazing never had a burger like this it’s unique and delicious
Most delicious mofongo and tembleque! Thanks for a great Puerto Rican experience!
The menu is hit or miss. The stuffed fried plantains were truly amazing, but the guacamole tasted like it came out of a bag. Drinks were good, service was good, and the ambiance was great. Just be careful what you order, and ask your server for recommendations.
I was told if in Puerto Rico you had to have some mofongo and I was told this was one of the best on the island and they werent lying. It was amazing, a traditional Puerto Rican dish made with plantains and a protein of choice... Definitely need to visit again
Had to wait over 45 minutes for a grilled chicken breast. Food was average but definitely not “home made” as the name of the place implies. The worst part of my experience was definitely the service. Rude servers, not attentive. By far my worst dining experience in Puerto Rico. Please do yourself a favor and don’t go to this place. There are so many other options in this beautiful island.
We had a great experience here. I got the chicken Mufungo (a local PR dishwhich was very well done here. I also got several Mandellas which was a bit expensive (not a surprise)The food was good, drinks expensive, but they have great service and are friendly.
Nice small bar inside old San Juan. Good for a quick bite.
My wife and I found this place when looking in Google for good place to eat in Old San Juan. We were near so we decided to try it. Upon arrival one of the owners, Joe, received us with great courtesy and friendliness. We felt that we knew each other from a long time. Took us to the table and offered us the house lunch special of the day. He was so honest in the description of the plates that he convinced us to try them. We didn’t even ask for the menu. My wife ordered lasagna with onion rice and salad. I ordered rice and bean with “cuajito”. They were flavorful and exquisite, in the perfect portions. In a short word Great. The “mojito” was perfect, not very sweet not sour. And believe me I know mojitos. We finished our meal with a the best “tembleque” I ever tasted . It is like a coconut custard but with the feel of a mouse. Joe even sat with us at the table to talk to us. We felt like family and I let Joe know that. And believe me, I will be coming back. The cost of food? Very affordable. In your next visit to Old San Juan try it. You won’t regret it.
This place is so amazing and authentic! The owner, Joe, helped me choose between the menu items, and I got the chicken breast with cheese, sweet plantains, and a special green sauce with sweet potato fries. AMAZING! They also had the best flan I have ever tasted. The restaurant was clean and had a lot of art on the walls. It was like eating in a gallery. I would 100% recommend having lunch here.
My favorite restaurant in Puerto Rico. Went in 2016 and couldnt wait to go back this time! Did not disappoint. The chicken mofongo is delicious!
The best mofongo I have had is from here ! The other more notable places for mofongo in San Juan just dont seem to produce the flavor or quality as they do here. Service is always quick and very friendly, dont forget to try the guava and cheese pastries for dessert .
The Mofungo is delicious! Large portions and great wait staff make this a must visit while we n Old San Juan.
The open doors here give the feel of sitting outside and allow people watching, but the air conditioning makes spending time in Hecho en Casa more comfortable. Its a very nice place to just sit and chill out. They have a delicious veggie burger too. The staff is super friendly, and the location is right in the heart of Old San Juan, in the thick of all the action. My reason for not giving five stars is the lack of more vegetarian options.
My cousins best friends and friend of my Father so they thought we should visit and enjoy dinner... Wow excellent food and outstanding hospitality. I have already started telling my friends to stop there when they are in San Juan Puerto Rico see you again soon...
The best mofongo in old San juan
Great staff, very friendly. The mofongo was an awesome dish to have for dinner.
We found this place from being on a Spoon food tour. Their mofongo was the best we had in San Juan and so we came back a week later. Yum!
We stopped in San Juan on our cruise and stumbled on this place for dinner as we walked around Old San Juan. Everyone was very friendly and our waiter Joe was outstanding. He explained the origins of mofongo, the traditional dish, and how they make it. Would highly recommend the flank steak mofongo; sooo delicious!
Very good fare, Pleasant casual atmosphere and friendly service. Everything made fresh to order from scratch. The salmon burger was a tender filet with raspberry sauce. Perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. Nice bar and family friendly.
The food was absolutely amazing. Loved the open concept of the restaurant as you can see Old San Juan and the shops and people walking the town. Joey the waiter was very helpful, polite and really cute. Everyone there were so nice. I highly recommend putting it on your list of places to visit while there. Come hungry you get a lot of food for your money.
FANTASTIC FOOD, GREAT SERVICE....The exact setting you want in Old San Juan. Many options in Old SanJuan, in our 4 days there we came here twice. BOTH meals were very good and priced so well... Busy because there good but not ridiculous were you get lost in the shuffle... One of the owners spent time with us talking about his place. His pride shows and carries over to the restaurant.. Our favorite bartender Arriyanna was about as genuine and sweet as they come, and she mixes a great drink....Keep it up your place is doing it right
Delicious food and terrific service! We came here just after coming from the airport and it was a great place to sit down and have a good meal. We got the shrimp mofongo and chicken bread with chimichurri and plantains. Both were delicious and good portions. Would definitely come back!
The staff are very friendly and the food is good quality. I came twice and would recommend it. Make sure you get the staffs attention when you sit down as we saw one chap leave in a huff after not being served but he walked straight in and Saturday in a corner. The service may be slightly less than what some are used to but I found the atmosphere laid back and pleasant.
This place rocks great atmosphere, great drinks. The rum punch was strong but flavorful. The Pina colada was sweet and refreshing. The guacamole was very good. Im going back to try the food. Our bad luck we had just eaten.
