Aqbat e-Taqiya (Ma'alot ha-Midrasha) St 8, Jerusalem, Bayt Ḩānūn
In the Old Town, this relaxed hostel in a 12th-century building is a 4-minute walk from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and 7 minutes' stroll from the Dome of the Rock, an ancient gold-topped shrine. Shkhem Gate light rail station is 12 minutes' walk away.Rustic, simply furnished dorms feature bunk beds and shared shower-only facilities; some have curved stone ceilings. Private rooms with bathrooms are also offered.Amenities include a quaint tearoom that offers hot drinks, juices and shisha, plus a roof terrace, and a communal lounge with a fridge.
If I could give zero stars - I would have done that. True, the location is amazing and it’s a great value for money. However, please just add a few bucks and go somewhere else. This hostel is extremely shady and filthy. The air is awful and the beds are super unclean, no proper sheets either. The room’s wall and ceiling are falling apart. Bits of plaster fell onto my face as I was sleeping, I woke up with bits of plaster on my clothes. There is no positive atmosphere because everything is disorganised and there are sometimes loud arguing that you can hear. Very difficult to charge your phone as there is an issue with outlets, most of them don’t work.
I came here a few years ago and I still hold fond memories of this place.I hope to come back there one day.
good location with neat and clean
I have not ever seen the hotel like that. It looks like cave more than hotel.Everything is very mysterious from light, way, room and own hotel. When you come here, I will have feeling that you are doing illegal thing.I wondered that where is this and who I am? 😅😅😅
The motel is like the cave. Maybe it is amazing with someone
Stayed there in 2018 and twice in 2019. Mustaffa the owner is friendly and their helpers, volunteers or relatives. Its VERY centralised inside Old Jerusalem. Its a budget hostel, with old charm. That means it keeps price low.. Dont expect too much if you are there for longer stay. Its a night stay or two and move to your next destination. Pay more elsewhere and stop whinning on your next stop.
I absolutely hated it.The bed has bed bugs, unclean and untidy.
Hostel is working. Everything is great - you have dinner. Today in coronatime owner has special price - 100 shekels per night for separate room for two people with conditioner and bathroom.
Its a good place for people with low budget, its really cheap but you still have a dinner included everyday. You have to pay aditionally for laundry and towels I think but thats probably due to the low basic price. The staff is sometimes loud, sometimes quite directive, but you can have a lot of fun. I will always go there if I need a hostel in Jerusalem!
I wish I could put 0 star! Worst youth hostel ever!! Ive done many but i have never seen one like that ! No hot water, no heating, barely a kitchen ... Ive never seen that. To cook you are halfway outside, there is one fire, one pan, one spoon, one knife and no forks. The place is disgusting and cold, we change hostel after spending one night there : avoid this place if you want to enjoy your stay !!!!
We had an amazing time at Hebron Khan. Its a hidden jewel in the middle of the Shuk. The management, especially Abdul, are amazing and very attentive. Delicious breakfast and amazing rooftop. Super recommended!!!! Thank you Hebron for making our Jerusalem experience unforgettable!
Not what pictures show on website. Very dirty and noisy from outside. Booked 4 nights and left after the first night. Had to pay for all 4 nights up front and got no refund. Would not recommend this place at all.
BEDBUGS!!!! Seriously. Went to bed unmarked ,woke up with distinctive bites all over my arms and legs. Truly awful. I should have foreseen it--the whole hostel had a lot of uncollected trash on the floors, plastic bottles, bags, coffee cups, etc. I have stayed in many hostels but none so meagre--no real sheets, an ill-fitting bottomsheet that kept sliding off the tiny mattress, no upper sheet, but a wool blanket in Jerusalem in summer. Then, no hot water in the showers. Despite this I stayed the night since it was very cheap and it would be hard to find another place that evening. However, as said, bitten all over this morning. It was room #5, if it matters. I would have told the man at the desk but there was no one there for the hour I spent getting my stuff together and trying to treat the bites. I left a note on the bed and on the unmanned desk. We are talking really, really nasty.
People running this place are really nice. Its an affordable place to stay, in a location that could not be better. I just left after 1 night as I got bitten by the bed bugs. All over my body, face, lips. Never got bitten so bad in my life.
I like this Hostel very vheap and ideal for students or someone that is traveling on a budget.nice ideal positionbetween all the faiths it is very Central. The only thing the place in the last year has been badly neglected. I will recommend for young people its fine but not suitable for married couples.
Great place and amazing people. Delicious free dinner for a hungry traveller every night. Fantastic location right in the Old city. Would highly recommend.
Well... Was dirty, had no hot water 2/3 days we stayed there. No good blankets, no heating inside (and was so cold btw)... Woudnt repeat
Amazing price and location, especially since a free dinner, with unlimited coffee and tea is included. I was able to get lost in the old city and make my way back to the hostel without needing google maps with no problem so it was a great place to explore from. This hostel is not for the faint of heart though, it is more for seasoned budget traveler hostel as the cleanliness, friendliness of the staff, and social areas all need work. The beds felt very dirty as did the showers but they were acceptable to use, just barely. One of the staff members was very welcoming but the others were not helpful or straight up rude. The common area was a couple plastic chairs facing the bathroom so you can hear people going to the bathroom which isnt very charming. I can go on but in the end Id say its worth a stay as you cant beat the price and location.
In the heart of the old town of Jerusalem. Best location. Owner is so kind to offer free of charge and delicious Palestinian dinner on the rooftop terrace. However cleanliness could better. Rooms and common areas are dirty and run down. But still a good value option on this price to stay in the middle of the old town.
This was the WORST experiences Ive ever had in a hostel. The personal was super unfriendly, the quality of the air wasnt good (I even got dizzy because of the air), my room didnt have any window and I never saw that the personal changed the bed sheets.Additionally they kept the passport of my friend and when he realised that was there, they asked for 50€ to give it back.I dont recommend it at all and I dont think any human should sleep there.
This was one of the worst experiences Ive ever had in a hostel. The pictures/reviews on booking do the place no justice.Positive: location is central in old JerusalemNegative:1. The place was smelling really bad. Like cat pee and mold.2. There were dead insects on the bed.3. The bed sheets were smelling and there were stains all over them.4. It was loud at night because the roomwe were in was basically a shack on top of the roof.5. The toilets were unclean and there was no soap to wash your hands.6. The power oulet was hanging from the live wires. Quite dangerous.7. The AC didnt work at allWould stay away at cost.See the pictures yourself
New experience for me as for European person. Owner is Palestine family. Every evening we had very tasty local dinner completely for free, which was cooked by owners wife. Very nice people. Hostel is located in the heart of old Jerusalem.
I liked three things about this place: it was very cheap, its located right in the heart of the Old City, and they served free hummus and salad every evening. The facilities are lacking, and are only minimally cleaned. There was only one shower and toilet for six rooms to share, and the shower had no space to put your shoes and only a hook for your towel and clothing. The WiFi only works (& minimally as thatin the reception area. In our room there was only one electric socket, so we had to choose between being cooled of by the fan or recharging our phones. Wouldnt go back or recommend.
For £8 a night this hostel is great value, given its position within the old city and its basic, but tasty free dinner. However, if you can afford a few more quid you should go elsewhere. The hostel is disorganised, with loud owners who just evacuate you out of your room for an impromptu plastering and fumigating session. Youll regularly be woken up by the staff just walking into your room to have an argument with each other then walking out again. As for the rooms, the beds are suspiciously wrapped in cling film, but even this does not protect you from the bed bug bites. The floor is thick with plaster dust that has dropped off the overly plastered ceiling. On this note, youll constantly have to brush plaster off of your bed, and be prepared to have large bits of plaster drop into your eyes whilst sleeping. The rooms are also quite filthy, a cigarette end on the window sill next to our bed warmly welcoming us to Hebron Hostel. The whole hostel also stinks of mould, noticeable from the moment you enter. The ceilings also have visible mould on them. Altogether, the hostel is undeniable good value for money, but you get what you pay for. Whilst some of the staff seem genuinely helpful, the majority seem to be careless and in some cases just rude. Only come here if you are on a serious budget.
Haven for budget travellers, however, here is what 45 nis a night gets you.* I thought the room was clean or perhaps I had good room mates.* No breakfast, but free hummus and salad dinner every night which pretty much everyone looked forward to, also free tea and coffee 24/7.* Friendly hosts, and great location for all the old city sites.Thats my 3*...- 2* because the bathroom, kitchen and fridge (doesnt look like it works!were dirty, no door to keep the smell away in the bathroom, although I feel the shower rooms cleanness improved slightly throughout my stay. Also there are a lot of stray cats in Jerusalem, which meant you couldnt have dinner without them intimidating you for food, they were everywhere in the hostel, no boundaries, so if youre allergic, like I found out I was, this might be a problem.
+ very helpful hosts+ nice location at the center of the old city+ local excellent dinner every day, free tea & coffee+ old city climate 1000%- slow internet, doesnt work at the highest floor- warm water in toilet not always available
The whole hostel was a nightmare...BED BUGS- all of us in the room started to notice bed bugs all in one day. Of all the beds in the room almost all of them had bed bugs. I even was bitten a few times. One man from Colombia was bitten very severely. We called this to the attention of the hostel manager who started yelling and pointing the finger at us. He threatened to kick us out of the hostel for mentioning it or speaking about it with other people stayit at the hostel. He yelled at us and was very rude and smelled worse. After he and his staff member gathered all the beds and sprayed them with medicine. At this point we had no place to sleep because all the beds were piled in the center of the room and there were no spare beds or matrasses. I had no choice but to book another place. The hostel had a bed bug infestation and anyway we werent given an alternative place to sleep, unless youd like to sleep on a matress freshly sprayed with medicine crawling in bedbugs. Unfortunately I cant post videos so I will post screenshots to the videos. No blanket- I asked on four separate occasions for a blanket but I did not get one, only "yeah okay" or "dont worry you will get one just wait" I slept under a long robe I had in my luggage every night until I left.Bed was uncomfortable- the matress sat on a metal framed bunk bed with metal bars and had no wooden panel under it for support. The mattress would sink into the metal bars and flop down through the bars at the end because of the lack of structural support. My neck would go down along with the matress. The most uncomfortable bed Ive slept on at a hostel.Bed was filthy- when I first got there I was assured the sheets were clean and yet on the bed lining there were piles of crumbs and hair.WiFi did not work for most of the time.No charger next to bed, limited charge plugs- each person had to charge their phones near a charging outlet next to the door whichade theft much more likely and was an inconvenienceThey tried to overcharge me by 22 US dollars when I first got there. I tried to pay in US dollars. luckily I showed them my reservation and did the shekel conversion with a calculator. No air conditioning- only a singular osculation fanPros:Good locationFree DinnerEasy to findSometimes the bathrooms were clean
Its a little hostel, in the center of the old city. Citizens from all state, Italian, Japanese, Russian. Comfortable atmosphere. If you has a little budget is the good solution.
On the one hand, the young host is very welcoming, they serve free dinner and the location is great. However, they close the door around midnight and its impossible to get inside - so I spent a night in the street (hence I write that Ill be late because of seriius reason)
Mustafa the host was incredible. Super friendly. Problem is that showers have cold water and the Wifi in the rooms dont work
Illegal workers who stole and attackedDirty and Dangerous place.Stay away from this filthy place and you dont know what you are eating even though it sounded good you get free supper.Rude owners (the older man). Dirty moldy place with dirty sheet no blanket. Risk your belongings getting stolen because illegal cleaning ladies stole and the police couldnt do much because the owners denied that. Very violent place. Safety not guaranteed.
A very nice place with free meals every evening. The host is friendly and welcoming. The private room is really not that great.... It doesnt even have a mirror, its very small and it doesnt feel very private at all. The other rooms with multiple people are also very standard and you can hear the people talk outside the rooms. You wont get any sleep, so dont come here if you need some, haha.
Fantastic place in the very center of the Old City - its clean, cheap and close to everywhere with free basic dinner on top of that. Host Mustafa creates amazingly positive atmosphere and helps everyone whenever needed. In addition it is located in very climatic building. Dont hesitate if youre looking for budget stay in Jerusalem.
Really cheap but dirty as well. Showers were so dirty I didnt want to shower. When they cook dinner, their cats are always in the kitchen walking around. Didnt feel comfortable there
I cant praise this place enough. I was only slightly hesitant seeing other reviews, but for the price point this is by far unmatched. The dinner they serve everyday is homemade and really delicious. Its always the same meal basically, but couple that with free coffee and tea 24hrs a day and the amazing location in the heart of the old City and you have the best hostel in Jerusalem. Be sure to stop by at the café on the ground floor below the hostel and speak with the owner. He is an amazing and kind person. Shout out to my friend at the front desk of the hostel, Mustafa. "Welcome welcome!"
Pro: Very cheap. Friendly co-travellers. Plus for some who like this: central location in midst of Muslim old-city.But overwhelming con:1. Does not feel clean2. Facilities extremely basic3. If female you may not feel comfortable to access it later in night.4. Arbitrarily gives you below-standard exchange rate from Euro if you dont insist (and Ive seen others disappointed by them charging too many nights and fighting for correction)5. Things are a bit shabby, so expect to e.g. have most plugs not working and being unable to charge phone etc. Wifi very mediocre and a real pain to use, for large part of time impossible to get connection.6. No lockers was available for me when I arrived.7. Not much common space. Some, so ok, but no nice aerated space; you feel bit like in catacombs8. Only dinner, no lunch. But this dinner is simply what is dirt cheap to provide, mostly rice, so mostly no proteins esp. if vegetarian.9. Doesnt know about surroundings, no much travel tips etc., so if you want your hostel to be a hub for info & tours, this is not it.All in all, does not compete with the more pricey other hostels (e.g. like Abraham Hostelsin terms of quality amenities, comfort, atmosphere, food, and information availability.
Super cheap, extra location, it is better not to expect a lot, but for this price and location in the middle of old town, and near to the train that will take you anywhere outside its really one of the best options.
This is the place for hardened travellers. Usually as the all hostels. Safe place, kind people. They cook very tasty and simple dinner for free each day.
Very cool looking and budget friendly hostel in Muslim quarter of Jerusalem Old City. The staff was very friendly and room we had was extremely cool (old arched ceilings).Bathrooms are clean and have bidet showers which was very nice. There is also free dinner on the roof top at 6pm and it was absolutely delicious. Very homey.
Greatest hostel ever ! Clean, friendly hosts, free meal every evening at 6 PM and best location in Old town of Jerusalem at 160 meters of Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The HostMustafa and his family are amazing. They are super friendly their are always there and take care of that hostel. In the evening they always offer a free dinner for everyone. Once he took us to a supermarket in order that we got a fair deal on food.DormsThe old building is incredible. The rooms gave the whole stay over a special touch. I slept with 16 people in one room and if you used to it its quite comfortable. TheLocationRight next to the Church of Sepulchre. You walk several times a day through the Damaskus gate in order to leave the old town. The Western wall is very close so that you still can go in the night to this inspiring place.
Great hostel, amazing location, clean, super friendly management (father and sonand delicious dinners!I recommend warmly!
Very well located. The manager and volunteers are good people. Just 4 minutes walking to the Holy Sepulture. Free coffee and free dinner at 6 pm :o . The best is to meet people from everywhere in the common areas. If you like adventure this is a good place.
The owner was a bit unfriendly (atleast to me, he was very friendly towards women. Look out though, i saw him hug that one asian lady for far to long!), but the staff was very friendly. There is a free dinner ar 6pm, which was alot better than you expect from a hostel. Showers and toilets where fine, but could have been cleaner. Overall one of the better hostels in Jerusalem.
Place has a lot to learn. Cleanliness, fixing things and simple guest management. They are working hard to make it happen and the management is simply quite new and has a lot to work on.For the price per night you cannot expect a lot, the employees however are friendly and helpful. The location is pretty great in the middle of old town right at the via dolorosa
calm and friendly place to stay in Jerusalem. They offer dinner everyday. Very nice
Wandered into the hostel by mistake and was invited by the staff for free lemonade and meal with guests on their rooftop lounge. Its in the heart of old jerusalum and feels so calm and historic
Hostel situated right in the heart of old Jerusalem, just 5 min walk from Damascus gate. There are lot of small shops around with food, typical sweets and souvenirs. The building itself is old with typical interior inside. Weve got a very small room on the roof, with bunk bed, fan and table, so during the night was quite hot but still acceptable. WC and shower are shared so sometimes be ready to wait. There was a terrace as well on a roof and kitchen. Very kind and friendly staff. All guests were suspired by local dinner with local drink from the owners. Overall, very nice place to stay for reasonable price with the best location:)
NEVER come here during Ramadan unless you love staying up until 5am with people slamming dishes all night long next to your room. We stayed in the dorms next to the bathroom and it seemed people were using it all night long with loud chatter. Also they continued flowing in through the room without a care for the other 10 of us trying to get some shuteye. We stayed 3 nights and I hope never to come back. Get ready for 3 nights of headaches.
Lovely and cheap place to stay in old town. The Rooftop is also great place to have a few drinks with friends.
