Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village, Opp: Hotel Lake View, Near Christ Church, Alevoor road, Udupi District, Manipal, Karnataka 576104, India, Bhatkal
Traditional houses have been preserved for future generations at this heritage village attraction.
Its must visit place in Udupi. Its relatively new place, so one will not find it in top10 places list of udupi. Its very good effort to recreate ancient structures and maintain them. You can see homes from 12th century. You can go inside the homes and get the feeling.Ticket price may b little high but it totally worth n justified.
The best experience that we had during our recent trip to Mangalore was a visit to Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village near the town of Manipal. Surprisingly neither the hotel where we stayed nor the usual travel websites like Tripadvisor or Thrillophilia include it in their recommended spots for sight-seeing. In my view, it should be right at the top as I have not seen anything like this ever. I chanced upon a reference to this place through a Youtube vlog called the "Travel Vlog IV" by a person named Ivana, where she mentioned this place as one thats not to miss. This village has been built over 6 acres of land and it includes 23 reconstructed houses and other structures that belong to a time period between 1216-1912. Not only these are masterpieces from architectural perspective, but the detailing of each wall, floor, ceiling and furniture can only be viewed as a humongous artistic endeavour. As soon as you enter a house, you would hear a classical song or an instrument being played in the background matching with the locale from where the structure originally came. All these elements together would transport you back in history to those days when people used to live in that house. Its literally mesmerizing. The man behind this superhuman mission was Vijayanath Shenoy, a banker from Udupi, whose passion was to devote his time, energy and money in the restoration and popularization of architectural and cultural heritage. He built the first house for his own residential purpose in 1984 by reusing the relics of demolished houses. That received a lot of attention from within India and abroad. When he saw a steady stream of visitors, he decided to embark upon the mega project. Later, in one of the interviews he mentioned that - “I love houses in which six or seven generations once lived and breathed, designed not by architects but by people themselves—in line with their needs, social requirements, and the climate.”It took nearly 20 years to complete the work (1997-2016). Although initially the funding support was limited, eventually that support came from the Finnish, the Norwegian Government and the Indian Government.
Its just amazing to witness and admire the beauty of Indian vernacular Architecture. I should salute the passion of a person who has taken such a effort to bring together different forms, materials and skill to make this place possible. If you are in Udupi, this is the place you should not miss. If possible please ask for guide who can assist you voluntarily and give you details. We got Mithun who was very kind to give information and it was very nice to understand the planning and technical aspects of the structure which without him we may have missed to acquire.
Absolutely recommend visiting this place for anyone traveling to Udupi or Manipal. Place is well maintained and ticket prices are justified. Ensure you have atleast 2 hours allocated when visiting the place. Enough parking space available as well. You can also get a glimpse of Manipal lake in the background.
This place is full of marvel. The architecture and wood work is beyond imagination. But the best part are the people working here. Not only the guide but the security people will also show you their beautiful place of work with a bright smile.
A must visit once in lifetime. Its a architectural flower blossomed with the idea of one person.Take the people who can explain the story behind each of the structures. Its amazing to listen to the wonderful stories behind each of them. One day absolute worth of spending of time. The people who are there in premises are very helpful with a smile on their face. You wont for sure regret visiting this place.
Best museum ever visited. Deserves applause for creating such beautiful place
Its a very lovely place for those who love architecture, culture and history. We easily spend 3 hours inside. You cant buy any food or water inside, so better to bring your own. Water is readily available inside tho. You can also enter the houses and explore by yourself. Takes one back to the old eras!
What an amazing effort !! Had gone with low expectations but what we saw exceeded it by a comfortable margin. Ended up spending 3 hours there
The place is a must visit for anyone interested in our ancient architectural skills and wisdom, which is sadly going extinct now. Salute to Shri Vijaynath Shenoy, who had the vision plus the passion to translate his dream into reality. Its only when you consider that each of the 23 structures has been dismantled and recreated here that the enormity of the challenge hits you. Had also the good fortune to run into Mr Rajesh Pai, the President of the Hastashilpa Trust, which runs the place. A worker of the trust, Mr Mithun provided us some real good inputs on the structures. Hope his expertise is put to good use, considering his passion for history & architecture. The place is a must visit, for sure. Itll take about two hours to see the place. There is a washroom & drinking water at the site.
Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village is very beautiful, picturesque and well maintained. It contains 23 different culture houses. The feel you get by visiting this place is priceless. Ample space for parking and friendly staff.Entry fee for adults ₹300 and for Students with id ₹150.I encourage people to visit and contribute.
Manipal is a throttling City, where you always heard roaring buses, trucks, and flying people here to there. After you enter here, you will forget where you are and enter a new era. Every house tells you a different story and tells you about your culture, heritage, and architecture. The fee is quite high but for 300 you can make time travel thats not a bad deal.
This is really a good place to visit for a cultural and heritage experience of the region. There are 23 houses to visit here and it takes roughly around 2 hours to visit the houses in detail. The price for adult was rs.300 which I thought was a bit steep. Nearly 5 houses were closed. Considering I paid rs300 I expected all the houses to be open. It was not mentioned at the time of buying the ticket that some houses were closed. The houses are well maintained and gives us a good idea about the ways of living of the people who lived there in the past. It reminds me of my grandmas old house. Its a good place to relax and explore the history of the konkan region. The architecture of the houses is amazing. The woodwork, painting and many other ancient objects are well preserved. This is a must visit place with family and friends.
A must visit place!!!Great...!!!Highly appreciable work done by the Hasta Shilpa Trust.Do visit and experience the reconstructed marvellous structures..

Hastshilpa museum is very beautiful and picturesque. It contains 23 houses and Village Market which are distributed in approximately 1.5 km area. 15 houses and market are open right now. They are also running one initiative where anyone can adopt any old house and can look after. A must visit place if you like to see old architectural style. One can spend 2.5-3 hours easily.
What a place! Amazing! The brainchild of Mr. Vijaynath Shenoy at Manipal. It is museum of different houses with different architectural style. A must visit and worth enjoying. One needs to spend 3-4 hours at ease and enjoy the monuments. Well preserved and maintained by staff.
This place consists of 23 different structures which is basically maintained in the form of village. It bears the beauty of old age houses, hospitals, essential shops and facilities. Each n every structure is well maintained and the information hung outside the house about particular structure impressed me a lot. Beautiful and must visit place 😇😂
If you are keen to know about the ancient houses in the village, about the architecture and culture, I highly recommend this place. The entire village is very well maintained with information and numbers at the entrance of each house.

Wonderful experience visiting this site. A big appreciation to all those involved in maintaining these. Had a chance to see lots of things that were used in ancient times and dont exist now or have evolved over the years.
Self guided tour through a well maintained model of a heritage village. Very good for children and enthusiasts to see houses modelled around different cultures and centuries, the various households items used over time, the type of market places and shops, the ostentatious or simple lifestyle of different classes, and so on.
This place is a time machine to the old era...One big applaud for Dedication of the founder Mr. Vijaynath Shenoy. Staff here are good and friendly all proud to work there. I personally loved my experience and time flies here. We spent 3 hrs here and I still felt like not leaving the place. Will visit every time I come somewhere near. Short of words to explain the beauty here. They charge 300 rs for adults and 150 rs for senior citizens and children. Which is totally worth.
A magical and painstakingly restoration of the traditional architecture of Karnataka.Time flew by as we paced through classic homes from different times and sections of the society, transported from their original location, from ruins to being reinstated back to full glory here. Not just the actual houses, but also the art, music and scents unique to each house add personal charm that helps transport you to that time and age!It is an inspiration to see 1 mans vision to save and display the traditional architecture of this region. And its true, all around the fast changing landscape of Udipi and Manipal, the cute vernacular structures are fast disappearing, being engulfed by malls and city style monolithic pigeon holes. So this may be the only place in the future where we will be able to witness the styles of homes of the bygone era.DO not miss this place!!
Great collection of Heritage/Vintage homes, all painstakingly restored and curated. A must visit when in the Coastal belt of Karnataka. I urge people to donate to their trust as well. They are doing amazing work.
Its like a retrospect household and cultures. The entrie buildings are reconstructed with old household from various regions in southern India mainly from Karnataka. And we can understand the old generation peoples are concerned about the family values and all of the house holds are well handling the family. For architecture students its a good place to understand the different styles in a same spots. One of must visit place in the Karnataka.
The heritage village is beautifully created near to Manipal and the collection of houses it just awesome! We went there to see the heritage designs and architecture of the houses dated hundreds of years old and influenced by several cultures/areas of Karnataka and were Wow’ed by the experience. The entrance ticket was Rs.300 per person and a bar code scan was available to give the information on the houses on display. It is a must visit if you are into architecture and appreciate the ethnicity/charm of earlier houses design.
Very beautifully structured and maintained. One can go back to the time and memories, how people were before technology arised. Music played in each of the house is so soothing and brings a weightage to that architecture. The main capture is that they have shifted the house from different places in here, keeping the originality. Make some extra time to watch all the details. I am sure you all will be mesmerized with the beauty
If you have an interest towards architecture or have ever wondered how things were before technology took over our life, this is the must place to visit. The details in the woodworks, utensils and tools used in their time was fascinating to observe. They charge 150₹/ student and 300₹ for everyone else for the tour. For me,it was worth it. A total of 19 architectural structures to visit. Loved every bit of the evening.
