Afternoon tea. Excellent service and food. This was a gift to celebrate our marriage, so very pleased it was so inviting and with lovely food and service. Thank you.
Absolutely superb, would give ten stars if I could. We went for afternoon tea, the customer service from start to finish was impeccable, the food was delicious and the best mocha I have tasted. All served in impressive surroundings, it was like stepping back in time. This is an experience you cannot miss. We were made to feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Well done all at Hartwell House, we will be back..
Stunning Place. The lady who gave me my massage was lovely and it felt amazing, the staff were very friendly too.The food was also very tasty.I do have a couple of irritations though.Firstly, the hand sanitizer when you enter the main hotel for tea, is highly pungent with the smell of some sort of perfume that triggered my allergies and started to make me my eyes water and started to make me cough so much that I had to use thr toilet to wash my hands. Non fragranced sanitiser would be more suitable for people with sensitive skin.Secondly, when I was sat down at my table, the service lady handed me the menu saying this is the tea Ill be having and then said can they offer me a glass of champagne, prosecco or juice.I said, a prosecco please.Upon leaving the premises after I had finished, a receptionist came running out advising that I hadnt paid for my prosecco which took me aback since I thought it was free as the service lady said may I "offer you."I also would have no problems paying for a glass except that it was £10!!£10 for a small glass of prosecco! In this state of economic problems were all having, I would never dream of wasting £10 for such a small amount of drink and I think it was a bit crafty to make it seem like it was apart of the tea by using the words may I offer you.Other than that, it would have been 5 stars otherwise.
I was made to feel very special! Staff seemed very happy in their roles, which was reflected in the service they gave.
This is a fantastic place - great grounds, food and staff. I’ve been going for years it’s not cheap but worth it if you turn up early spend the day wandering the grounds, go swimming, have dinner and an early night. You’ll feel pretty good the next morning!
We had a great one-night stay at Hartwell House. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room – we chose one of the Royal rooms on the 1st floor, expensive but worth it – was very large with high ceilings, had a huge bed and plenty of useful furniture; the bathroom was OK (one sink, not big, shower in the bathtub). Dont expect a modern decor – this is a stately home, with lots of original detailing carefully preserved. The food in the restaurant was very good. Maybe the hotel has responded to earlier reviews: there was a good vegetarian menu for dinner, with three options for starter and three options for the main course, and the options we chose were delicious and a good portion size. Just be aware that if you book the "dinner bed & breakfast" option the price includes only 2 courses, so you pay extra for the (deliciousdessert. Breakfast the next morning was good and plentiful. The spa has a large pool which is obviously intended to be a quiet place. Theres also a fitness suite. We stayed one Sunday night in early autumn. The hotel was very quiet, and most of the guests elderly. There was a definite Jane Austen feel to the whole experience! If you want somewhere with more of a buzz and modern luxury then go to Chewton Glen. But for a quiet and restful stay in a welcoming and comfortable stately home close to London, with good food and lovely grounds, then Hartwell House is a great find.
ProsLovely grounds and building, breakfast was nice but priced at £22.50 PP, good service, good massageConsThe spa has 12 beds so was busy every time we used it, the room was dated and smelt like damp/ dust, the room we were given looked nothing like the photo, gym/sauna/steam facilties are datedMore cons than pros, overall an okay experience but not worth £200+ a night.
Nice house and gardens not very big outside but worth a vist
Fantastic location. Food good. Service very polite if a little slow
Lovely place, lovely staff and lovely food, couldnt fault it
Went to the restaurant as a surprise for my Dads birthday, the staff were fantastic in making sure he didnt know, the food was amazing and the staff were spectacular.
What a lovely place, a touch of history. Visited for a family birthday party. The food was high quality, really enjoyed it. The staff are very professional, the house is very clean.
I recently made a spa reservation for two people I hold very close. They were celebrating a very special occasion. I received glowing feedback about how the team at Hartwell House and Spa made them feel very special and pampered.I would recommend this place to everyone who would care to listen!I want to take this moment to thank the team who looked after my parents! You exceeded all expectations and helped make the day so memorable!
We were going to celebrate an important wedding anniversary for my parents by having afternoon tea in one of the luxury hotels in Central London but decided in the end to try afternoon tea at Hartwell House. We made the right decision! The staff were all welcoming and attentive to the right degree. The sandwiches & sweets were exquisite and the tea selection was extensive. We felt very relaxed in the peaceful atmosphere of the drawing room and had ample space between parties and didnt feel at all rushed. All of the rooms were comfortable and luxurious, including the bathrooms! We went for a lovely walk in the grounds afterwards.I would highly recommend trying an afternoon tea at Harwell House.
A lovely three nights stay at this National Trust hotel. Deliberately kept to its era it is not awash with modern conveniences but all the important things are provided. The staff are very efficient and courteous and the rooms provide good old fashioned comfort. Nightly rates are not cheap and the food and drink prices are borderline extortionate so apart from breakfast we chose to eat elsewhere.
Just a wonderful experience from start to finish 😃 with 3 nights in a court suite and dinner in the restaurant on the second evening. The welcome was so warm and friendly, with a brief tour of this fabulous house. Our suite was ready early and it was beautifully furnished with the comfiest of massive beds. Everything was scrupulously clean and tea, coffee and biscuits were in the room. You had the choice of whether you required the room to be serviced or not, which is a great idea. The house itself is just beautiful. Every room is furnished differently and it was joyous to enjoy pre dinner drinks or a snack looking out over the immaculate gardens. It is just so peaceful and tranquil there. We were fortunate to have lovely weather and you can walk around the paths and enjoy watching the swans on the lake or the many birds and squirrels.Breakfast and dinner were amazingly good. Everything is beautifully presented and tasted really good 😊. The wine list is extensive and very competitively priced and we tried the local Dinton Folly rose fizz - extremely good 🍾.We both have to thank the fantastic staff!!! Every one of them was so friendly, professional and warm and lovely to chat to. You made our stay very special. We shall definitely return - its a no brainer!! Thanks again to you all.
Had a wondeful evening aided by brilliant staff in beautiful surroundings. Staff and Management always very welcoming. Tried their Tasting Menu with the wine flight. The pairing of the wines was very good for the course and the items on the menu were beautiful to say the least. Our personal thanks to Hartwell Management for our lovely complimentary Cheese Course. Overall, a Highly recommended evening.
Wonderful afternoon tea with family. 8 of us with mixture of veggie, meat-eaters, etc all beautifully catered for.
Starting in the spa for their ultimate aromatherapy massage, Christina was absolutely magic! Delicately spoken, she immediately made you feel relaxed. Followed by afternoon tea, in a drawing room all to myself, feeling like royalty. The staff go to lengths to make you feel special and looked after. A special thank you to John (green waistcoat incase there are other Johns lolwho gave me a personal history tour of the house and gardens!
Beautiful historic hotel. Wonderful breakfast with plenty of options; the spa facilities were also great. The staff were wonderful: thank you to Matthew who greeted us, to Joseph who served us dinner and to Molly for the amazing facial. The only criticism would be that it would have been nice to have more vegetarian options for dinner as what was available was very cheese heavy.Thank you again for a lovely stay!
From the moment we arrived in our car and were greeted I knew this was going to be special. I wont spoil the historic elements of the House as thats interesting to read and hear about from the hotel. Our visit was during COVID-19 restrictions so the hotel was only half full as a result you literally felt like you had the house to yourself. Our room was huge and had a mix of original wood panelling and restored but the room was fantastic. The food is best described as excellent both breakfast and dinner have enough choice for everyone. Breakfast consists of a menu with plenty of choice including en excellent cooked breakfast. Dinner has plenty of choice with some local produce used and you can choose 2 or 3 courses. Plenty to choose from the wine list alongsideWe used the spa whilst visiting which includes using the gym (v small which has two treadmills, a bike, x-trainer, weights etc. The pool is a decent size and not too deep so most people could stand up without water being above your head. Next to the pool is a jacuzzi which probably can hold 4 to 5 people. Unfortunately the steam room and sauna were not available to guests. Changing rooms, lockers and robes all available and clean. Unfortunately we booked late so spa treatments very limitedService as you would expect is absolutely spot on, nothing is too much trouble. If you want to get away from it all and really wanted to be treated to something special this is the place to come.
I have covered a couple of weddings at this beautiful and imposing setting. It has very traditional features and fantastic well kept grounds with the added bonus of a river running through the garden! A superb backdrop for wedding photos. Staff were lovely. Overall its a supurb venue of weddings, events even for a cheeky weekend away Vanessa White (now Crimson Sky PhotographyAston Clinton
We recently visited as day guests for refreshments after a memorial service. We were in the morning room. The decor is charming, the afternoon tea we were served was lively, especially the fruit scones. They catered for vegan and gluten free diners with ease. All in all a very impressive house with attentive staff and good Covid protection policies.
Amazing meal to celebrate my Mums 60th. There were 9 of us, all with slightly different dietary requirements, and they looked after us all. Food was fantastic.
I had the opportunity to organise a conference at the venue this weekend. From the planning pre conference planning to the attentiveness and accommodating attitude of ALL the staff throughout the day; all I can say was the customer service was excellent! It was so good to be welcomed so warmly from the outset, such a homely feel to the venue. I’d be delighted to organise an event there again and will definitely look into arranging a individual stay myself so I can enjoy the spa facilities too. Thank you Hartwell House!😊
My mum went for afternoon tea with her friend and absolutely loved it. She said they felt really looked after and everything was top class and very traditional. Shes 90 by the way and doesnt do Google reviews which is why Im doing one! Thank you to everyone at Hartwell House for giving her such a lovely experience 🙂👍
Cant appreciate this venue enough.Beautifully relaxing ambiance, attentive staff, fabulous English menu!Wonderful Spa, pool, therapists.Very relaxing!Thank you all! 😍
Amazing place, wonderful spa with everything you could want. Beautiful extensive grounds to explore. It doesnt come more special than to be staying in a historical stately home!
Wonderful place for a meal/stay. Staff are really polite and very accommodating. Food is lovely too!Obviously the house is beautiful, so many ornate details, truly exceptional and the grounds surrounding the house are lovely and well kept.Fully recommended for special meals/stays.
Grand surroundings and fine foodA beautiful venue for a special treat. The building is stunning and it is elegantly furnished with many tapestries and great views over the grounds. Staff were polite, attentive, discreet and polished. Food was delicious. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming despite being ‘formal’.
I went here with my daughter for a belated afternoon tea (due to covidit was beautiful! The staff were very polite and friendly, and the afternoon tea was delicious! Would definitely recommend it! I will be returning at some point!
Superb experience in a beautiful location.Covid rules tempered the feel of it of course but the roast dinner was sublime.Would love to go againThe grounds are a superb way to finish off the time there.
We had a wonderful meal and overnight stay. This hotel supplies luxury and grand decor in abundance. The food was absolutely delicious and if you are still hungry in the morning, I can recommend the breakfast.
Stunning location!Extremely fine menu for both dinner and breakfast, high and cream tea are both excellent. The house is beautiful, inside and out. There’s a croquet lawn adjoining.Wine list is not extensive but it’s very interesting, with some deep complex Lebanese red taking my biggest interest.Staff are very helpful and extremely professional.Rooms in the court are spacious and well provisioned. The walls around the property are relaxing and quiet.
Fantastic surprise for my 50th birthday. Great welcome on arrival, fabulous room, amazing dinner and breakfast. We used the spa facilities which were lovely, housed in a separate building. The house and grounds were great to explore and we were given a history of the building. A minor issue with a member of staff was dealt with excellently by Matthew, the director. Thank you for the champagne before departure and the gifts to take home.
Just returned from the Historic Tour and lunch. I booked this from an email prompt. What a lovely idea! It was great to know more about one of my favourite lunch venues. I hadn’t realised just how important the house actually was. Just enough information to keep everyone interested as I’m sure there was so much more to tell. The set lunch was delicious as ever. I can highly recommend this as a gentle, informative and enjoyable experience.
Really enjoyed our afternoon tea at Hartwell House. The decor, history and surrounding grounds were very impressive. We enjoyed sandwiches, scones and fancy cakes with your choice of tea from a long list. The library where we had our tea was very comfortable with beautiful decorative sculptures of dragons, fish and birds on the ceiling . The staff were very pleasant. The only negative point was the extra charges for more sandwiches. Other than that we would reommend a visit.
Absolutely lovely afternoon tea and a walk around the grounds and gardens.Beautiful setting and very well looked after. This was a very nice gift from a friend, but we would love to go back again. We had a nice choice of teas or coffee, nice selection of sandwiches and a very yummy tier of cakes.
An absolute treasure of a property, had lunch here which was very very good, the staff are amazing, very attentive and made me & a friend feel very special. The service was second to none, other establishments can learn a lot from the staffs utter professionalism at this hotel. We enjoyed the experience so much we will be back again for sure. A wonderful afternoon spent at this beautiful place.
If you like fine dining in absolutely beautiful surroundings, coupled with excellent service, then you should visit this venue. I have not stayed here, but dined on several occasions. Dont consider this venue as a hotel, its nothing like that. Its more like a visit to some obscenely wealthy relatives home, where you are made to feel really welcome and valued. The public rooms are just beautiful and have not been spoiled by trying to cram them full of tables in order to sell you tea and scones. These rooms are just right. The staff here are all, without exception, excellent and are trained to the top of the profession. Smartly attired in appropriate dress for the duties they so professionally deliver. As for prices, really good value for money.
We stay frequently at Hartwell and it’s always a such pleasure to do so. Hartwell has a lovely English country house feel ( with a touch of France!and a fascinating history. The staff are consistently attentive and charming. We particularly enjoy the spa and walks through the beautiful grounds. Our most recent stay, over the New Year, was so relaxing and enjoyable - Hartwell at its best; excellent menus and wines, lovely attention to detail and happy, smiling staff. Thank you, and we look forward to visiting again soon. Marcus & Louise Spry.
Another amazing stay here! We booked for our wedding anniversary weekend the second year in a row as we were blown away by the level of service, friendliness and professionalism of staff. We like the boutique, comfortable nature of the hotel, and it was a luxury to enjoy a walk in the grounds, have an amazing three course meal and spa treatments whilst away from the kids. Thank you again Hartwell House for making us feel special.
Incredible place in a wonderful setting. You can’t fault the way this historical house has been converted into a wonderful hotel experience. Dinner was ok as far as fine dining goes but I don’t like fine dining so not the best person to comment. The spa facilities were very good and we made excellent use of them. Two key issues for me. Firstly, we were put up in the rooms a short distance from the main house. They were lovely but not ideal for room service breakfast, which was cold by the time it arrived. They managed to get our order wrong twice in two days and reception tended to be a touch defensive. Secondly, house keeping was rather reactive. We had to ask for a water top-up and they forgot to provide clean cups and glasses the following day. Afternoon tea was nice and the manager was very accommodating and polite. In summary, many lovely things about the place but one or two things were a little lacklustre. Would recommend a visit though.
Have had afternoon tea here twice now and been impressed both times. This is expensive, but has been worth it. The building is lovely and the food has been fantastic each time. Great selection of cakes and sandwiches, with plenty to go around. Also a lovely selection of teas to choose from or coffee for non tea lovers. It feels like you are in pride and prejudice! Highly recommend for a stately feel to your afternoon tea!!
A quiet and peaceful hotel just an hour away from London. The building has a lot of history and books very much worth exploring. We loved the ground floor public rooms with fireplaces and the grand staircase is a must see. The grounds are quite well kept and offer a lovely ~30min walk. The breakfast is excellent. And the staff is very welcoming. The rooms however could have a much better cleaning especially the toilet area. We found the beds quite uncomfortable and could not sleep well, perhaps also due to the very hot and dry air in the hotel. The pool area is nice yet would benefit from a bit more cleaning - there was soil around the pool as well as some sand/ soil in the pool itself.
Having been to a couple of spas I was interested but this one would be like. It is more of a small intimate Spa but its clean and the staff are lovely. The gym is rather small and there is only a few different machines in there. Sitting by the pool between treatments is very relaxing and they have a good variety of environments in a Jacuzzi to a steam room. The service in the restaurant and the quality of the food was outstanding. I would recommend a visit.
Weve stayed here on numerous occasions, its a beautiful place but the food just keeps getting worse every single time! Hence the review this time! My husband had hair in his dinner last time, which the manager was very apologetic about, Weve had room service which was unedible, the tray even had an empty salt pot on it! And breakfast this time was just dreadful! The only thing I enjoyed was the orange juice.. The croissants were so stale I just left them on my plate. Its a shame as we like the house itself.
Great location, great service, lovely evening. Stayed last night (dont really leave reviews unless amazing or terrible). Luckily this falls in the amazing category, close to town but still secluded, staff are very friendly and attentive (very difficult to nail). Food was good and staff very professional (except for the reception gentleman - who we felt was a bit blaze). Staff couldnt do enough but in right doses! Room was comfy and big, so was the bed. Really cant fault it would highly recommend!!!
Friendly staff and food was good (set menu as part of conference). Lots of antiques, soft sofas and old paintings, so really had a country house feel. The pool in the spa was also very nice and the gardens/grounds well tended while still not being too manicured.
Had the most fabulous weekend ever in this wonderful Hotel. The setting is so beautiful. Our room was just lovely and comfortable with great views. The staff at this hotel cannot do enough for you. Only had one gentleman who was not very nice, however the rest of the staff made us feel very welcome. I would recommend this Hotel and Spa to anyone who is looking for that little bit of luxury.
