Enduring neighborhood BYOB serving traditional Indonesian fare in warm, modest surroundings.
So happy I finally made it here to this ongoing curiosity to try. The food was complex and layered in flavor.
Food was very tasty and delicious! First time I have Indonesian cuisine
Excellent food, great vegan options, especially the jackfruit.
The hot sauce stole the show!I got a plate with their most popular items which apperently are beef rendang and collard green, both of which were very good but the small serving of hot sauce they gave me on the side really elevated everything to a "whole nother level". Not too spicy, very fragrant and a great match in flavour. All the dishes looked excellent and were of course cooked fresh. Cozy atmosphere, too.
Great food and good prices, though service can take a while. They are very relaxed and do not rush themselves though, which I can respect
I love this place. Love, not like, and love sort of feels like it’s not enough. What’s after love? Super duper love? Then that. Ahow thoroughly delicious. Bmulti-generational! That’s American dream stuff right here. I can’t wait for the Netflix series that’s based on this restaurant. I look forward to binge watching Hardena while dining on Hardena. Please god.
Massively overrated! Can understand people wanting something different & authentic but this isn’t it. Basically overpriced canteen food, with the service to go with it, but restaurant prices.
I understand that in Bidens America, inflation is a million percent, but charging $22 for a spoon of rice and three spoons of goo, that resembles leftovers in a sink when you wash your dishes, it’s too much. And their ambience... This place needed a good renovation, not a mural. There are other Indonesian places around with better food and prices.
While the service is on the slower side, the food is definitely worth the wait. All of the dishes are very authentic. Getting one of the rice plates is a great introduction to the restaurant and Indonesian cuisine in general. They have a rotating list of specials as well as some staples that are all excellent. Some of my favorites include the beef rendang, sayur lodeh and curried jackfruit (when its available). Make sure you get the chili sambal as well. This is the best Indonesian restaurant Ive been to outside of Southeast Asia for homestyle Indonesian cuisine.
Really great Indonesian soulfull cooking here, the whole family is involved and it aint fancy folks just plain delicious
This place is outstanding, even (especially?the vegan stuff all ridiculously delicious (tbh the spring roll was just OK, but everything else was so good that the bar for Philly is higher than it was B.H).
If youre looking for a super local Indonesian place, this is the place to go. Their Rendang is so tender and flavorful! The homemade hot sauce is one of the most impressive things too. It was very fragrant.
Ive eaten here many times over the 6 years I had lived in Philly, and it remains my favorite restaurant in the city. The food is phenomenal, the prices cant be beat, and the chefs/owners are so friendly and helpful. I look forward to visiting again next time I am back in Philly <3
Loved the rendang, the collards and eggplant. Cant wait to come back and try some more. You make your choices in a serving line and eat in if you can find a seat, or take it to go if you cant. Try a fruit drink - dessert in a cup!
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh. May Allah Bless you all this Ramadan month. Nice halal choices. Tasty. The best Indonesian food in town.
Fish was delicious...skip the eggplant nothing special...tofu and tempeh good enough...glass noodle great. I think the portion sizes have been reduced since all the hype...but definitely worth a try
We’ve been dying to go here because everyone in Philly has recommended it to us. Let me tell you that it did not disappoint! The flavors are incredible abs dynamic and the variety of food is exciting to try! It’s a small restaurant but I recommend dining in to get the full experience! This is definitely one of Philadelphia’s best kept secrets (okay, it’s not a secret)! Go!
If you want to try an authentic Indonesian food in Philadephia, you should visit Hardena, they have a buffet style setup where you can see what you like or you can pick from the menu. They serve vegan as well as non vegan meals.Thank you Hardena for never disappoint my taste buds 🙂
Super tiny but well worth the line for the food! Everything we had was incredibly flavorful. The main attraction seems to be the chicken/collard greens/potatoes. I had the goat curry and eggplant and both did not disappoint. The crispy potatoes and jackfruit were also tasty and a nice contrast in textures. Parking is super tough in South Philly so try to use public transportation. Not much by way of bike parking unfortunately.
If I had to choose my last meal, it would be from here. Best food I’ve had in Philly. Authentic, flavorful, filling and excellent service. It’s hard to get even one of those nowadays…. Definitely eat here.
This was my first time trying Indonesian cuisine and the food was amazing. Since it was my first time, they helped me out on what to order. I ended up getting green collards in coconut milk, goat curry, potatoes with rice and a potato based dessert snack. I would definitely recommend all the dishes I tried. They also have a lot of veggie and vegan options. Must visit if you are in Philly area.
Such a filling and wholesome meal! The lumpia was my favorite. Definitely worth grabbing a plate even though its takeout only.
Very tasty food. Quick and friendly service. Beef randang, potatoes, eggplant, tofu curry were all very good.
When I moved to Philly around 8 years ago a friend of mine told me that Hardena had the best vegan options for comfort food and I’ve been coming here ever since. The tofu/tempeh, collard greens, and potatoes are my favorite. They deserve all the success they’ve recieved and I love Hardena so much!
Oh my god where have you been all my life? My wife and I just moved to the area and wanted to try this place which everyone was raving about and we were not disappointed! We split the takeout beef, potatoes, rice, and collards. It was all amazing. AMAZING! The collards may be the best Ive ever had outside the south. We are still eating this as I write this and already we cant wait to go back! Stop what you are doing and go NOW!
I wish I could give more than 5 starts—I go out of my way to eat here. The food is delicious, refreshing, and comforting all at once and the service is warm. Would highly recommend!
Nutritious, warming and very affordable food on a cold wintry day! The staff is helpful with explaining the various dishes. Generous portions, too so be prepared for leftovers!
So good! So many different deeply satisfying flavors. Not too sweet or spicy. Like having a home cooked meal from the best cook in the neighborhood. GF knowledgeable, lots of options.
I go out to eat often but this is in fact my first review and I havent even eaten here yet. I typically will take a few quick minutes to look at the menu and read a few reviews before going somewhere new. Im giving 5 stars for the owners responses because theyre witty and just all around great. I plan on stopping by soon and Im confident Ill enjoy it.
I have never tried Indonesian food but when I saw the ginger fried chicken on Triple D I had to try it. Eventhough I was skeptical of trying a different cuisine. I wanted to see for myself what Indonesian cuisine was all about. I had ordered the ginger fried chicken with rice and sambal on the side. I love the fact they cook the chicken to order that is a major plus. So the food was wonderful and flavorful . The chicken was tender and seasoned well. The rice was cooked perfectly and the sambal tied everything together. Well worth the money and if you want to eat something out of the ordinary go here!
This place is a authentic as it gets. The flavors are top notch. Ive been a fan of aunty Enas cooking for over 30 years, now her lovely daughters have taken the family torch to the next level. The visit was a short reunion, however it rekindled my taste buds that I will cherish forever. that Im very proud of them. Thank you om, tante, dian, and Lia
Generous portions, taste is great all around. A small place with limited seating.
Hardens food (pictured here with my own oat groatsis the most wonderful asian food Ive had in south philly. I will say that it is very expensive for the size obtained, but its worth trying the food because its phenomenal. Pictured are eggplant, tofu, tempeh, and collards!
We love this place for our Asian food fix. Very authentic Indonesian food. Love the vegetarian options they have! Wish we lived closer so we could go more often but it’s worth the 1 hr drive!!
Food was good overall but...I ordered Curry chicken over rice with collard greens and the chicken to sides ratio was bad. There was endless rice with a few small chicken portions, which made the experience unenjoyable. Dont be stingy with the meat please.
One of my absolute favorite places to get dinner from. Every single food item they have is absolutely so delicious I couldn’t even say a favorite. I always call to place my order and they’re always so nice over the phone. Love this place so much! If I could give them a 10 star I would.
People rate this place 5 stars because they are told by a couple reviewers that its 5 stars. But really, its a solid 3 stars. It isnt all the hype it gets. The people are super friendly, and the proportion are good. But the flavor and quality is average Indonesian. This is in no way 5-star Indonesian. Especially served on paper plates, styrofoam, and with plastic silverware, which is so NOT environmentally sustainable. This place is all hipster hype and totally average.
Absolutely love the food here! Have been to their locations in south Philly and on the Cherry Street pier and every dish weve had is a winner. I especially like the goat curry, the collards, and the jackfruit (there are other vegan options as well).
I’ve been getting takeout here regularly during the pandemic and it’s been incredible. Very vegan friendly and full of flavors! But more importantly. The #NotPizza is worth all the hype. Just follow the instructions they give and get like 4 people to eat it with you and ...well look at the photos! All vegan, all delicious. Fave spot in the area (:
Goat curry more like bone curryFirst off my meal was delicious I got beef rendang and goat curry but the side with goat was just bones not only were they the giant pieces you expect minus the meat around it but there were a bunch of smaller bone fragments mixed into my riceWhy would I possibly want that in my meal seems dangerousLesson learned just get the beef
Your typical Asian food stall, roadside or at a food center; tastes EXACTLY like home. I got the beef rendang, tempeh and tahu telur over rice with an extra serving of belacan chili. Its 3x what I would pay in Singapore, but I gladly parted with my money.
Comfort Indonesian food. We had a couple plates, filled with tofu with eggs, jack fruit stew, ginger chicken and collar green over white rice. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out. We were a bit disappointed, since there were so many positive reviews that we had read about this place in the past year.Service was excellent. The server spent a good amount of time to explain each dish to us. Parking was terrible, we circled the block a few times before getting a spot.
Really wonderful authentic Indonesian food. It brought me right back to my trips to Indonesia - more than any other Indonesian restaurant ever has. Lots of vegan options and the woman serving the dishes easily pointed out which things were vegan. All the food we had was great, but I wouldn’t skip a tempeh option ever. Great price - huge plates with a bunch of different things for $12.
Came here for dinner. Pretty long wait in line and only 2 customers were ahead. Tried the meat skewers both the chicken and lamb plates. We also ordered the buffet cart double beef, mixed fried veggies and potatoes with sauce. The meat skewers were tasty but disappointing platter. Comes with 5 small skewers and a side of Cole slaw. If you get that as an entree definitely will be hungry especially for price 10-12$. The cart food was a much better portion. The beef and mixed veggies were very tasty. Potatoes were average. The hot sauce is also very disappointing. Its mild at best and so heavy in the ginger that overwhelms all other flavors. So overall good if you want already made cart food I would get that.
Beef rendang, collards and potatoes with all 3 sambals. Fantastic! Ive been wanting to come here awhile and its hard for a place to exceed expectations when you hear so much about it but this absolutely did. So flavorful and tender, now I understand how so an unassuming place got nominated for a James Beard award. I will dream of that meal
I never knew how much I was missing out until I tried this place. A friend of mine mentioned it so I had to check it out. It’s quite a small spot but don’t let that deceive you. The flavors here are huge! Personally I like to get the sampler to see what I like so I could get it next time I come, but man was it hard to choose what tastes best. I’ve come here numerous times since and they never disappoint. Would 100% recommend the sampler if you are trying it for the first time. Great spot!
Food was pretty tasty and well portioned. Somehow our group got charged $24 for two bowls of rice though, whats up with that?
Excellent choice for vegetarian and meat options in South Philly in a corner that looks nondescript. 2 entrees over rice starts at $8.
In the mood for something different? Then this is your answer. Walk into this inconspicuous sit in dining room and youre greeted by an interior that mimics Asian street side vendors with the stall and all. Known for their BBQ skewers, (which we didnt get the chance to try), this place also offers rice platters with a buffet of stews. Stews are well seasoned and but the servings were luke warm. Portions are ample so youll leave feeling full. The damage is about $12-$15 per platter (4 sides). Pro tip: its BYOB.If you found this review useful, please hit the "thumbs up" icon below so that I continue post more helpful reviews. Thanks!
Hole-in-the-wall joint that is not to be overlooked. Authentic Indonesian food served up quickly on plates of rice. Other items (e.g. sataycan also be made to order. Accepts card and is BYO friendly.
