Plant-based dishes inspired by the culinary traditions of China keep diners coming back for more.
Food was fresh and tasty. Walnut shrimp was excellent.
Vegan Chinese, Yes PLEASE!! I had the orange chicken and honey walnut shrimp and I literally shed a little tear. Thats how good it was and I never thought vegan shrimp could taste so much like the real thing. Pure joy. The restaurant itself is low key, no frills, average service but who cares?? Order your food and they leave you alone to enjoy it. Okay by me!!!
Gr8 food, fair price$ !!!Above avg customer service!!!
Good food but no more all you can eat.
Delicious food, friendly staff and great prices!
Unexpectedly delightful! Im not vegetarian but do try to eat plant-based more often now. Ive been a bit apprehensive about vegetarian Chinese products because of the processed look and taste, however I was pleasantly surprised by this meal. The items Id highly recommend:- Corn and tofu soup- Veggie chicken with orange peel- Birds nest- Stir fry asparagus with Japanese yam- Sweet taro dessertOverall you cannot go wrong with any of the veggie-heavy dishes. Its light on the palate - not too oily nor salty. I would definitely revisit.
Every dish is tasty or at least above average. Portion is generous. Clean environment. Highly recommend.
Great vegetarian choice of food here. However, each entrée is somehow pricy with the absence of the real meats here. It costs you about $20 per entrée, and it may not get you full if you are a glutton. Even before the pandemic, it costed a bit less for each dish, so I guess the inflation hits it real hard.
This is one of our favorite places. We love the lunch menu. The prices have been going up lately, but the food is worth it. I hope they dont change the menu.
Unexpected surprise. I thought this was an Asian restaurant with a few vegetarian options, but everything on the menu is vegetarian! I had the clay pot dish with "vege. meat", which was mushrooms, yams, and tofu. The yams were especially delectable, and I will be thinking about them for years to come.
Foods is always good, they changed the chicken from gluten to soy baked, which madera there mock meat a little dry and tough, but otherwise everything was very tastee.
The Hot and Sour Soup is delicious!!! Best one I’ve ever had, not greasy at all! The food is pricey but it’s hard to find good vegan Chinese food!
The food does not taste good here. And it’s expensive. The WORSTI will not ever return. Boddhie Veggie Cuisine in Rosemead closed permanently and this is why I came here. Boddhie veggie cuisine was delicious! & great prices.Happy family needs to change the recipes or hire new cooks for a better menu.Customer service is not too good. The restaurant looks outdated inside very low vibration energy inside. No thank you.
I appreciate the vegan options. However, its pretty pricey for Chinese lunch. We ordered 4 items and it was around 100 bucks. We also didnt get a tub of rice, instead we all had out own bowl of rice. The food tastes fine. Avoid the hot and sour soup. It was basically brown pepper water.
Best vegan restaurant in SoCal. My wife and daughter dont like to eat vegetables but all of us love the food at Happy Family. Our favorite dishes are Vege. Deep Fried House Chicken (General Tsos Chicken #525 on their current menu), Vege. Fish with Chefs Sauce (#505 on the menu), House Special Tofu Pot (#402 on the menu).
Good service. Excellent food. Looks delicious.
Hi. Ive been here a million times so my review will truly be an accurate portrayal of this restaurant. It is very TRUE that they got cheap and stopped offering their generous portions, and simultaneously raised the prices. That was the day this restaurant tanked. They remodeled but thats not important. I prefer lower prices and generous portions. Secondly, many of the dishes dont taste the same, theyre more bland, less tasty now. If you want the standard of excellence years ago, you should have gone to TIN IN, a similar veggie restaurant in Alhambra that was 100 times better than happy family. Happy family is like Tin Ins ugly cousin. Shorter, not as kind, more bland & withholding and an uninteresting personality.Food should always be made to order and when it is not you know its been laying around as it does many times like at My Vegan restaurant. I used to like Doris the waitress here at Happy Family but shes gone..she used to work at Tin in! You would swoon at the food at Tin in. As far as this restaurant, much variety but its definitely hit or miss. I usually get the beef and broccoli..the veggie meats do not taste as authentic as they do anywhere else. The breaded meats are too breaded and dough-y. I keep ordering the same things because when I try to experiment, I dont like the food and am disappointed. There is 1 waitress still there tho that I like very much. Shes understanding and I wish I had her every time I went there. Usually youre safer with a dish that has broccoli 🥦 or green beans because you cannot mess that up. I didnt care for the soups. The pork and cabbage is good but as I said Ive tried other dishes and was very disappointed. It really sucks to see LESS FOOD on the plate now!
From the moment I stepped foot in Happy Family Restaurant (III, now Golden Sunrise RestaurantI knew my life had changed. A bland and uninviting life had all of a sudden become one of vivid color and imagery: my eyes had been opened to the world of Happy Family.Despite a personal fiasco, the ladies at the front were overly courteous and brought out our “haute cuisine” meal in no time. But I won’t bore you about the politics of restaurant ordering. Let me get on to the food.Is a little bit of grease gonna kill you? No!But is not going to happy family gonna kill you? I think you know the answer to that question in your heart. We began our foodie journey with deep fried dumplings. The crispy edges danced with the delicate sweet and sour sauce. Small pockets of filling enhanced the flavor of the dough.Fried food had never appealed to me until I had experienced these wonton crisps.Next, we explored a “hair like seaweed” soup. Indeed, I was skeptical about eating something hair like? Would it taste good, like my hair? The answer to that question was a resounding yes! Deep layers of umami added flavoring to a variety of finely julienned vegetables. Tofu was the recipient of the labor of these vegetables bathing in a combination of all these flavors. What this means is that it was one of the finest liquids I had ever ingested in my lifetime.Further along the line, I had the Tofu, Pumpkin, and Eggplant black pepper pot. In a pool of flavorful oil sat chunks of well greased vegetable and fried tofu. I know what you’re thinking: this is so unhealthy! And while you might be right, the simple presence of being at happy family nullifies the concept of “fat” or “dieting”. I will admit, in an otherwise holy crusade of food heaven, this dish was my least favorite. But that means I would still rate it a 99/100.The fine dining and excellent service at Happy Family required a second visit. The fried dumplings required an immediate revival. A miso soup did well to stack up to the high standards set by hair like seaweed. Fried noodles kept the trend of delicious fatty food going. If I find myself in California, or frankly the whole West Coast, a pilgrimage to Happy Family is first on my list. All of this is to say, the food was, you know, average! 😜
Visited Happy Family twice to get takeout whilst traveling in the area. We ordered through Doordash pickup and the process was speedy both times. Employees are super kind and attentive, and the food is excellent. Our favorite was the crispy fried dumplings - we got more than 8 in our second order - the sauce is amazing & the dumplings are so delicious. The hairlike seaweed soup is also great & has a bunch of extra vegetables. All the food is great and there is so much, well worth the money!!
Love this place! As a vegan, this is one of the few places I can randomly order from the menu and its a consistently delicious dish! And since we order family style, we always over order! Theres so many good dishes!!This is also a place I confidently bring my non vegan friends and they, too, are delighted!Whatever youre thinking of ordering, go for it! Its probs delicious!
Excellent restaurant for Vegetarians! Very friendly waitresses. Very clean restaurant. Nice peaceful music. Welcoming environment. And great food! 👏👏👏
My vegetarian fiancee was in heaven... Tasty and savory Chinese classics that are all plant based. Food is served family style so bring friends. The tastiest of dishes for me was the ones without the "mock" meat... Pineapple fried rice (subtle sweetness and not overly friedand the crispy deep fried tofu with basil (amazing dry seasoned tofu with spicy marinated Thai basil). The Minced Squab in Lettuce was a great appetizer too with a blend of flavor and texture.
Very good place! Recommend! Portions are huge! We could probably eat it four instead of two people, huuuuge!
The traditional Chinese vegetarian dishes are so hard to make. The ones that I normally went to are out of business within a few years. Happy family has an all you can eat menu, but they dont offer it on the 1st and 15th of the Chinese calendar. Better to call them to confirm if they offer the all you can eat menu that day. The dishes that I ordered were just ok. Checked in Yelp get a free desert.
Absolutely LOVE this place. My family and I come here as often as we can for special occasions. We order a couple of dishes and all share from the large plates. A bit pricey but totally worth it. Best vegetarian place to go! The “chicken” drumsticks are my husband’s favorite 🥰 everything I’ve ordered becomes my new favorite! You won’t be disappointed
Once again had a divine lunch. Jim thinks their Orange "Chicken" is about the best hes had, EVER. The flavor, texture & delicious taste won him over again. I was wowed by the vegetables in Curry sauce. Quite the impressive array of veggies & flavors. I added cashews to make it out of this world. Fun & yummy lunch just before our afternoon Chinese Movie, at the AMC. This time The Farewell. Must See! Love spending the day in Monterey Park. Great food and flick!
Super good food and excellent service. Cant wait to go back and try more!
Amazing vegetarian food and highly recommend to vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike.Favorite restaurant. I feel like no other restaurant can I randomly select something off the menu and be so in love with it. The only food that was ever not amazing were the steamed buns (average). Their flan is more akin to pudding rather than a traditional flan but still delicious.
This restaurant has good food and taste delicious and fresh, the only thing I would say is that the food taste different every time you get it. For example, one time I had the orange chicken and it taste different then the last time I had it . Also, it will take a long time to get seated if its crowded. One time I went and it was just my daughter and I but another couple got to go before us and we had to wait another 20 minutes.
We had the sweet and sour chicken and that one I like, the other dish the "pork" with broccoli not so much.
Outstanding balance of flavors and variety. Absolutely amazing healthy choices. Very nice staff and calm environment. Good for kids too. If you havent already tried this place, you must, especially if you are not a vegetarian. You will be pleasantly surprised!
I know the happy family restaurant may sound iffy but its truly not. And the fact that its vegetarian just makes it more interesting!Go knowing youre trying something out of your taste buds daily routine. The flavors are definitely there. Get a nice hot cup of tea and try the mushroom orange chicken! Dont forget the fried rice .🍳
Been coming here for years. Everything on the menu is absolutely heavenly. Ive had the pleasure of ordering literally every offering. Lots of standout dishes, several great ones, lots of good ones and a couple of not so bad. Overall, heaven on earth with food for mind, body and spirit is here.
Service was amazing! I love that I can eat everything on the menu!!! Had the sweet and sour pork and the fried rice! It was so much food. Enough for four people! The tea was perfect to warm up before and after the meal! Food came out fast. The place was tidy.
Delicious vegan asian food. One of my favorites in the city. Have brought some of my carnivore friends and they are so surprised!Recommend: fried mushrooms, kidney basil mushroom and orange “chicken” sesameParking lot is just unbelievable during popular times (evenings, weekendsI also recommend checking out Vege Paradise. Both are so great! (Has more parking here)
Food is good, is a little overpriced when compared with the other same vegan restaurant in SGV. Service is so so (it was very busy, and there were only three waitresses).
Chinese vegetarian food is rooted in Mahayana Buddhist temple cuisine. This means that the food is mostly lacto-ovo vegetarian, with most dishes falling closer to the vegan side of the spectrum. Because alliums like onions and garlic are thought to be inflammatory and excitable, you won’t find these flavor enhancers in Chinese vegetarian cuisine. Cuisine that follows this tradition is called 純素 or “pure vegetarian”.With this preamble, the food at this establishment follows this pure vegetarian tradition. There’s a lot of tasty dishes that use soy-based meat replacements. For those who don’t like processed meat substitutes, the choices are plentiful and delicious too. The pineapple fried rice is really good. So are the tofu dishes and stir-fried fresh veg (try the pea shoots if they have it available).
They have tons of vegan and vegetarian options that taste just like the real deal. Huge portions at fair prices. Everything is super flavorful and the staff is helpful and kind. 10/10 will be back.
If you are a vegetarian surrounded with meat lovers, then this place is the perfect option. A pure vegan Chinese restaurant that makes pretty much all of its dishes using soy protein but with the look, taste (and sometimes textureof a meat based dish. There are completely vegetarian options too like with lotus roots etc.Their fried wontons are really tasty!Good service and pretty affordable.
Definitely tasty vegetarian food. Come for the lunch special for free rice and tea
Ive been a vegan for well over 3 years. This eatery has some of the best options at the best prices. Staff was fantastic and very accommodating to my needs.
Used to love this place. Wonderful people and great vegetarian food. New ownership really sucks. This time, drove 60 miles with 40 minutes before they closed to prep for dinner (which they never did beforeto be told they were closed. We usually over-order and our average is over $60 and we tip well, but their loss. Back to finding a good vegetarian restaurant, cuz we wont go back.
The happy family restaurant is indeed a place where you can bring the family and have a happy time. The food is delicious and the meat alternatives are just right. Ranging from duck, shrimp, pork, chicken and beef, youll have all these to choose from and feel confortable knowing that you are enjoying 100% vegetarian dishes. There are some vegan options but make sure you ask. The only downfall is the lack of pictures for their dishes. Either way, great place, great food and customer service is improving.
Restaurant is very clean and well maintained. Menu is overwhelming. Hundreds of options with very brief description, making ordering a guess. The food came quickly. All items were mild but good. The most flavorful item was "chicken" in black bean sauce. Menu indicated it would be spicy🌶️, but it did not need the warning.
We were hungry in Los Angeles quickly looking for an open Vegan restaurant... we arrived at 9pm and were shocked that they were closed. We were told that the kitchen staff had already departed but they would see what they could locate and asked if spring rolls were okay. The staff were WONDERFUL to us to bring out brown rice and the spring rolls and the best veggies with sauce. We had just experienced hardship to report a grand theft at the local Sheriff department and after several hours of documentation and sworn statements, this unexpected treat from this restaurant staff that went out of their way to get us food, helped make a difficult day into a delightful memory. Thanks Happy Family Restaurant Staff! Highly recommended restaurant for its atmosphere and its quality of good plant based food.
Retracing my previous review; possibly because of new ownership, the place has gone downhill. Wasnt too thrilled with the dishes we ordered, especially how much of a down grade the fake fish was. Not worth coming back here for my vegetarian fix.
Excellent food and service. Very friendly and inviting. Like you are visiting family and the food is freaking good.
This place has an amazing number of dishes you can choose from, all of them vegetarian even if they have meat names on them. Theyre very creative and preparing the dishes and they come up really tasty and flavorful. The ambience of this place is traditional Chinese, but everyone will likely enjoy the food here. The house chicken is addicting!
Cannot say enough great things about this restaurant! My son had his wedding reception there last weekend. The staff was incredibly helpful and so nice--especially given that we had not provided them with very clear instruction on a couple of things. They very cheerfully moved tables and reorganized things at the last minute. Their main concern was that we were happy--great customer service! The food was fantastic, and we had quite a few non-vegetarians who were skeptical, but they all commented on how delicious everything was! The orange "chicken" (mushroomswas a big hit with everyone!Thank you Happy Family for the wonderful food and service!
This is the best vegetarian Chinese restaurant that I have ever been to, and probably one of the best vegan restaurants in the region. Delicious food, wide range of options (all of them affordable). Includes an all-you-can-eat menu for $16 that allows you to sample from a range of over 70 different options!! Great service too. An especially good place to take a group, so you can sample the diverse menu.
