Heysen Rd, Hahndorf SA 5245, Australia, Mount Barker
Studio, home & grounds of famed 20th-century landscape painter Hans Heysen. Daily guided tours.
A national treasure most Interesting. A very gifted guide
Due to miss communication missed viewing the house which we paid for. What we saw was enjoyable.
Hans Heysen was one of Australias premier landscape artists and the tour of his home, his art studio, and his works was informative and uplifting. Volunteers led the tour and the opportunity to see where Hans and his family lived was enjoyable. Nora, Hans daughter, an accomplished artist herself was well represented in the tour. It is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Book ahead to ensure your place on the tour.
Great place to visit and learn, filled with wonderful paintings that are all original. This is a perfect example of a time capsule well preserved. The surrounding country side is amazing with beautiful views from the studio and the house.
The best day, art and house tours excellent
Really enjoyed this place. Great commentary on a life I was only vaguely aware of.
An interesting place but the price of admission is a little high for what it is.
Visited here with some friends and took the artists walk. This walk is a bit over 4 kms of undulating terrain. You get a good insight into where the painter lived and worked.Well be going back again to visit the home and the artists studio.
We had a great guided tour to the house and the studios. The estate was very well attended to, with great care on such fine details. Its really touching to see this level of commitment and dedication to our history. Our guides were both lovely. Lily was lively and fun. Robyn was charming and very knowledgeable, with lots of stories behind pretty much everything we saw in the house. We were very impressed and we left vert happy.
Visited this place on a recent tour of South Aus. Our tour guide at The Cedars was outstanding with her knowledge and enthusiasm. She told of a very good Australian artists story. Well worth a visit.
The tour was well worth it, the guide was excellent and the house was very interesting.
Excellent tour of the house and studio. Knowledgeable and interesting guide. Fascinating place.
Very nice and relaxing old world charm if you appreciate fine artists
A truly amazing place, worthwhile visiting. His and Noras studios are insightful, and complete with many original works. The trust uses the income wisely, not only buying back much of the Heysens works for display, but keeping the huge property pristine.
Highly informative guided. Difficult to find out the tour times. We had a tour at 2pm. Not sure of any other times.
An interesting location to visit for background into the life of the artist Hans Heysen. The tour guide was knowledgeable, worth having the full tour that includes the residence.
Interesting place and inspiring to know the life and passion of two artists (Father and Daughter I enjoyed exploring the garden and seeing their amazing pieces of arts at their studios. Great history and the staff are friendly and wonderful. I had a well-spent morning 😊 so worth a visit. Thank you.
It was a really interesting tour of the cedars home and studio. We gained a new appreciation of the beautiful work of Hans Heysen and Nora Heysen, and their varied and prolific output. Highly recommended.
Lovely guided tour told us life stories about Heysen family. Her story telling make me feel like finished a biography of Hans, so informative and engaging and the Heysen family house is soooo charming and characteristic!
Great guided tour provided by knowledgeable volunteer. Wonderful to learn about the artists Hans Heysen and his daughter Nora Heysen and explore their studios, the family home, gardens, history and more. Highly recommended.
A wonderful experience! Staff really lovely! Stefan, our guide was wonderful, very knowledgeable and obviously had a real love for the artist, his family and the house. Thank you.
We went with friends and found the guide, Stephan, very friendly and a wealth of information. The art and the history associated with it was very informative and enjoyable. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates the art of the Heysens, Hans and Nora. The two studios and the house are incredible. You almost expect to find them there, even though they are no longer with us.
Well worth a visit. Heysen materials are well presented and interesting.Lovely gardens and bush land with abundant wildlife.
Lovely way to spend the morning if you are in Hahndorf walking around the studios and gardens to see where so much inspiration was drawn from. Very picturesque location.
This is a magnificent place to visit. What a talented and gifted man.His daughter was just as good. The history here is excellent. The views are beautiful. Its definitely worth the short drive to Verdun.I truly recommend to go here for the tour.
Do you want to visit a really comfortable house in a picturesque setting? If so, this is the place to go. Besides seeing Hans Heysons studio, numerous paintings, bucolic Adelaide Hills environment and interesting reception centre, you will enjoy the guided tour conducted by informed volunteers. Of course the cottage gardens set the scene for the experience. Make sure to have a look at Hans model A Ford and caravan.
Place is good and beautiful, staff is not very co operative. Overall good experience.
Loved, loved, loved this! History, art, gardens, nature, all rolled into one. Took the guided tour and our guide was very knowledgeable. The house was just beautiful, and as a lover of the arts and craft period, being able to just walk through the beautiful house and Hans studio was mind blowing. Highly recommend!
Worth a visit of the artists home that is the gallery to Hans Heysens famous work. Excellent, passionate guides to share the history as you tour through the studios and home.
A hidden gem. Highly recommended organising to do the guided tour of the house and garden. Amazing that so much is authentic, adds greatly to the story and memories of the visit. It was fantastic to see the art studio complete with easel and paintings. Beautiful garden and setting.
Surprisingly good. Lovely guided tour, walked the artist walk & the house, studios & art work felt like a homely museum.
A wonderful experience to visit the home and gallery of such a well known, so accomplished artist. Our Guide was excellent as she described the works of both Hans and Nora - at the same time immersing us in the family history of this beautiful home and studio. Truly one of SAs historical gems!
Worth every cent of the $22 to see everything. Lovely well-informed and helpful volunteer staff. The house was a treasure, studios fascinating, the art a great collection of Hans and Nora pieces. Plus there’s gardens and gums and a nice but ageing art trail.
A good experience and the guides were well informed . Just give us more time after the information is given to appreciate the artwork. I did feel rushed in the house as while I was looking at the artwork the guide was already in the other room and giving her spiel. I was forever being moved on by the 2nd guide at the back to other rooms without being given time to fully appreciate the artwork and the home.I felt like a robber having to leave my bag at the door and even the 1st guide didnt know that rule. Smaller groups going in staggered would be better than a massive group in a small home .The rest of the property was wonderful and easy to access.
Fabulous place to visit. Make sure you book ahead for a house and studio tour. There is only a small cost. Jackie was a great guide. Our visit to The Cedars was a highlight of a trip to Hahndorf. You can see how this lovely environment inspired the great Hans and Nora Heysen.
Nice place, worth to see. Friendly staff.
An enjoyable walk in the gardens and grounds of the cedars. Very informative tour by Annette.
So worth the Visit, really get the feel of the studio space.
This wonderful hidden gem just behind Hahndorf is amazing. Step back in time.Tour guides tell the history of the home and art studio of the Heysen family. The artwork is truly delightful.Recommend to young and old with a Tour then time to spend on the property so take a picnic. Take paper and pencil. Or the take photos to draw later.Suggest 2 hours for tour then enjoy grounds at leisure.
Great historic place to visit in Handorf. Amazing Artist and painter. Reccommended for all ages.
Every artlover will understand why I gave 5 stars. The staff in the little shop were very friendly, the guides had an immense knowledge of the German born artist, his rough start, his studio, his inventions, his works of art, his house, his family, this garage, his property, you even feel the love floating through everything there even the air.Call me romantic Im still in awe as I carefully could touch one of his paintings when there was a little problem with the wooden storage unit, when I walked the paths, when I could sit on the bench he sat overlooking the garden, the hills, listening the sound of nature and the cedars. It was magical and I definitely visit again. (Photographs of my Hans Heysen series can be requested via my Google email accounts)
Interesting to visit. Visit the house on guided tour to see the paintings.
Lovely place to visit, Well worth the entry fee to stroll around the Gardens, Studio & Artists Walk
Incredible to see Heysens studio and home with all his tools and possessions still there as though he might return at any moment. This place, with Heysens and his daughters artwork hanging on the walls, tells such a rich and vivid story.
The guided tour provides access to the house which is very evocative of the life they led at the property. The visit provides a step back in time to Heyson life- his studio, the garden, the little caravan and the paintings of our landscapes that are so familiar. Well worth the visit.
Interesting historical tour. Would have liked a bit more time to view all the works.Tour guide very good
Great historical house. Provides an accurate glimpse of life in the early 1900 of a well known Australian painter Hans Heysen and his family. Highlights include the studio, the Ford model A, the garden, and the various landscape of interest that are reflected in many of his paintings.
An interesting property with some real history behind it. The studio was fantastic to go through. The grounds could do with a bit of a revamp as the trail can be hard to follow at times. All in all a great place to stop in the hills
We took a friend, who was visiting us from Sydney, to Sir Hans Heysens house, called The Cedars, near Hahndorf. We have lived in Adelaide since 1982 and had never been to the house. Furthermore we always thought of Heysens paintings as being only of landscapes with old eucalypts. What an amazing experience it was to be guided by someone who obviously loved the house and revered Heysens skill and his legacy as an artist. I strongly recommend this experience to anyone who is able to pay the house a visit and to take the guided tour. It was an eye-opener. It changed my whole idea of Heysen, the house and his contribution.
We can see and feel the real home, garden and studio of Hans, where he created so many brilliant artpieces. Very special experience to follow the guided tour.
