Enduring Japanese spot serving sushi, meat & tempura dishes in an informal setting with a cozy vibe.
Nice, starting indoor dining with reservation
Authentic dishes and great service! Dine-in reservations required, to-go/pick up available per COVID restrictions.
Great service and the food is reasonably priced and delicious
We have been enjoying the Japanese cuisine of James and his family for 35 years. Their karage chicken is the best in Sacramento!
Wonderful staff, very good food and the most authentic we have found in the area.
Take out only. No dine-in atm.
I’ve been a customer for 3 years now. I like it overall and still be the top 3 sushi restaurant in Sac area. However, i’ve seen the food quality declines over the time. Take Poke salad for example, overall food quantity is getting less and less, but most importantly, the fish is not fresh. I guess it depends on which day of the week you order, I’ve been lucky before for some fresh fish, but the last three or four times were all bad. I really hope this restaurant can get better, thus writing the long review and i hope the owner can see it. Hope you guys reopen and look forward to dining in.
The food is still very good, the curb side pickup service (only thing offered for now due to the Covid situationwas terrible. We called the order 2 hours prior to pick up to make sure it would be ready on time for dinner, offered to pay in advance, and with all that, waited over 35 minutes the requested timr before they brought the food to the car. Needless to say, dinner was very late... Very disappointing
This was our 5th or 6th time eating our lunch here.. always a pleasure to eat here.
The best Asian food in the City. period.Everything is good here, food , service , price.Thank you
The best food I ever had.Food is absolutely perfectionIts an explosion in my mouth Of yummy other places just cant hold a candle to this one believe you me I had them the staff is very nice and friendly and very helpful try the salmon you wont be disappointed the chicken salad is out of this world and the chicken teriyaki and tempura dinner is unbelievable the sushi they make the rice as so perfect not too dried out not too Mucky just perfect try the Godzilla just perfect love it why spicy Sammys not bad to and I promise you if anybody is disappointed that they dont know good food because this is absolutely the best give it a go
The food was a bit pricey for quality, but we did vow to support local :)
Have been going here for years. Usually order for take out. I think its the best Japanese food in town. Staff is friendly and professional. Honestly dont have a bad thing to say about Hana Tsubaki.
My ex-wife works there I was only there once and I wasnt eating any food but while I was there it was crowded cozy and quaint nice romantic place especially if its not busy plenty of parking oh yes and good food I cant remember the name of it but I would go out of my way to pay for the $20 salmon that they have oh yes and its clean enjoy the salmon security guard stands out front nice guy he dont play
My boys love to eat here...these photos are from our most recent visit. A nice family place to gather and talk. The food is amazing, fresh, and creative.
Atmosphere and decor is lovely, though a bit cramped. Food is wonderful and tastes amazing, would highly recommend the sesame chicken
A bit on the expensive side but extremely good food. The daily specials are where you get the best bang for your buck, and they never dissapoint. Very nice staff and generally very fast service. The restaurant is quaint and modeled after traditional japanese interiors and is extremely nice..
I have never had better food than this building. The most authentic Japanese food Ive ever tasted.
Love seeing the owner serving her guests over the years. I order their chirashi every single time and they never fail to use fresh fish. Never tried their rolls or soups, but will vouch for their fish!
Doooooodd!! Yess!! Finally a place that serves legit Gyu Don. Ive been searching for quite a while and this place has the best gyu don. The sushi is oishii and fresh and the gyoza is pretty tasty too. I would highly recommend this place to anyone thats looking for a better then average Japanese meal. Definitely worthy of a 5 star 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 rating.
Long time East Sacramento Japanese restaurant. Good sushi rolls, teriyaki salmon and chicken. All the stuff at other tables looked really good too.
This place is amazing!!! Great staff, delicious food and delightful atmosphere! If you havent gone here, you absolutly have to!
The food last night was amazing sashimi and sushi was like butter, melted in my mouth. Had Nigery Urichen , Salmon, Tuna plus tempura all great. Did I mention the Saki that too !
Been here several times, but it is getting bad. Server forgot the appetizers, glass of water went empty and they microwaved the tempura!!! Wont be going here again.
We got there shortly after they reopened for dinner service at 5pm. Started with an order of unagi that was the worst Ive ever had. It actually looked and tasted like it had been left over from the lunch service. For the entree we ordered the special dinner for 2 (pictured). It was all pretty good.I used to eat here all the time when I lived in Sac years ago. It was always top notch. This time it was just so-so.
There food and service were awesome and they worked with me on making the food things I could eat. No eggs, gluten, dairy or sugar and they did an amazing job with the rolls. Definitely going back and sitting at the sushi bar next time!
My family and I have been going here for over 25 years because we have loved the food for that long. But this last visit was probably the worst service Ive had at a restaurant since Ive had my 2 youngest children. Granted it was a busy night, but even from the moment we walked in, the main host guy was totally unhelpful. I asked for an additional chair because when I called I had reserved for 7. However, my 3 year does not like to sit in high chairs. He looked rudely at me and said flatly, "there arent any,", and just walked off. I looked around and saw several tables that appeared to not be using all their chairs. After at least 20 minutes where the wait staff basically ignored us and didnt take our order, give us water, or table settings, and my 3 year old complaining about her high chair, I took it upon myself to politely ask an older couple who were not using 2 of the 4 chairs at their table if my daughter could use one. They graciously agreed and I dragged the chair back to our table. We waited another 40 minutes our food still hadnt arrived and I had to ask them about if they had an ETA because my 18 month old was screaming hungrily and we were all tired of waiting. They said the kitchen was behind even though At least 2 other tables who arrived after us got their food. Finally after another 10 minutes our food finally arrived minus my mother in laws dinner. I had to flag the wait staff down to ask if theyd forgotten hers, and after at least 10 more minutes hers finally arrived. At the end if the night the crowd dissipated but we still had to request our check and water refills. I think the on waitress who started helping us near the middle of the night realized how badly we were being served and tried to make it right, they gave us free mochi ice cream to say sorry for the delay but much too little too late. I was so disappointed about the service that after almost 3 decades I will think twice about going back. Super sad.
Food is amazing, semi low light atmosphere is great for the several times Ive been here. Sesame chicken is a personal favorite and the sushi was great as well. Very good suggestion for every kind of event or date, really. Ive never gone wrong ordering anything new.
Overpriced and small portions. Waited 40 minutes for my food and watch out for the old lady waitress, she was very rude and rushed my table of family. Bottom line, save your time and money and go somewhere else.
I really like the atmosphere here. I always get the beef sukiyaki, which is great. Service is a little weak here, if you need something you have to catch someone and ask for it.
Nice people. Over priced cafe food. I had a dragon roll and shrimp tempura. Tempura batter tuffThe shrimp were over cooked. The dragon roll tasted like it had been in an oven and dried out. My companion had the crab roll. She said it was disappointing. The mochie ice cream was good but was plainly served despite the high cost. Nyeh...too bad
Food was fantastic but the service was not. We sat for 30 minutes before our table was ever approached by anyone.
Sometimes you eat something that doesnt taste as good as it looks, sometimes you eat something that doesnt look good but has great flavor. If you come here you will eat something that looks great and tastes better! At $15 I had one of the more expensive choices, (which I went barbarian on and even ate the garnish crunchiesbut I am happily full and totally satisfied. I will be back!
I have been coming here since 1980. I am always disappointed when I have Japanese food anywhere else. This place is far better than the others. Salmon terriyaki is awesome. Many really good sushi rolls too. Someone once told me salad is just salad. I told them they need to try a salad here. You wont be sorry.
Not the most friendly sushi place. The owner from behind the sushi bar casts an almost suspicious glare at anyone who walks in. But the food is good enough, not overly expensive, although they recently raised their prices. Perhaps to compete with Kru that just moved near by offering much higher end fare.
Overpriced but good. Softshell crab was burnt. Miso was nice. Rolls are fine. Tempura was good as well.
Service was friendly, food ok. Used to love their sushi but it isnt the same now. Not as fresh tasting.
love the food. always consistent. one of the few Japanese owners left in town.
Horrific and rude and slow. Twice now i have gone to pick up an order and been told my wait time is now triple what it was reported to be. Of course when i brought my man in with me they turned super polite. Jerks. And the big lady is super rude for some unknown reason. You aint special girl.
Always have wonderful food!! Even if there is a wait it is absolutely worth it. Awesome hot tea!
Food is ok. If you get edamame, its served cold. Service is mediocre. Not my favorite sushi place, but its ok.
Mom and pops Japanese restaurant. Reminds me of some of the places I visited in Japan. No frills, fairly priced, especially for lunch. Sushi isnt amazing, but the fish is good quality. Id suggest going for the sashimi over sushi. Katsu sauce is good, so is the tataki.
My favorite dish here is the beef udon, its rich and flavorful. The tonkatsu is also excellent. The sushi is good but not a highlight. Staff are accommodating and friendly.
Great quality, service, and setting. Family friendly too! Every meal Ive had there has been delicious, especially their grilled salmon.
Service could be slot better. Food is pretty good Ill revisit one day
This is the greatest Japanese food I have ever eaten, but I do go elsewhere for sushi. Nevertheless I always recommend the restaurant to people.
Amazed by the great service and the most amazing sushi rolls ever. This little hole in the plaza had a line and wait but quick turnover. This place has now taken #1 spot on my sushi list. From the kids meal to 4 different rolls we tried to my Eel hand roll... All tasty, fresh and delish. Tempura good too! Pls give them a try, you wont be dissappointed. Bento boxes appeared average... But the rolls are a HIT! Ambience not fancy AND smaller arm room ... But friendly!
Seems to have gone down hill. Our last visit found greasy table tops and the salt and pepper shakers were nasty. We have found the salt and pepper shakers cleanliness or lack thereof is a good indicator of the overall cleanliness of the restaurant. Staff were pleasant but very, very average. You can do better.
Hana Tsubaki is the best Japanese Restaurant in Sacramento! They are Japanese owned and operated, you go in and all you hear is the boss talking is Japanese. My family has been coming here for over 30 years, it is still the same and never a bad experience! True authentic food, fabulous quality, and locally owned.
They have pretty good sushi and sashimi, but I think the portions are smaller than other places, and it costs the same.
