Atmospheric tiki bar with lots of rum, artisanal syrups, a themed menu & pufferfish decorations.
Hale Pele in Portland
Description
The flaming drinks were fun to watch, the seating was cozy and the food was good. The service was great, the host kept us extremely well updated about the status of our seats. I would definitely recommend the lava flow, it was sweet and very smooth. The space is very small, so be prepared to wait if you have more than 3 or so people.
MoreWe wanted to like this place more than we did. The atmosphere is fabulous, and they have an incredible drink menu. We tried two different cocktails and loved both of them. One of them came on fire! Definitely fantastic place for drinks.Where it fell short was in service and food. We came to have an early dinner. Walking in at 4:00 p.m. on a Monday, the place was almost empty yet we were not allowed to take a corner booth which they said were reserved for larger groups. There were five open booths when we arrived. When we left, one was taken by a larger group. Three had remained completely open the entire time. And one was given to a different couple so only two people!! Seems really bad service to make someone sit on an uncomfortable chair at 4:00 p.m. on a Monday when you know those booths are never going to fill with groups at that hour. Then the delivery of the food also left something to be desired. My food came out about 10 or 15 minutes after my partners food, which meant that he was done eating by the time my food arrived. The place had only just opened when we arrived, so Im not sure how the kitchens timing could be that bad at the start of the day when there are no other orders yet...The food itself was also not that great, except the pork sandwich which was excellent. The mac salad was a little bland yet sour which was weird. The Rangoon dip seemed a little bland as well. Seems like it needed some sweetness or spice, since you normally dip a rangoon in something else. The slaw was bland and forgettable. Perhaps needed a touch of salt.If youre just looking for cocktails, this is the perfect place to go, but if youre also looking to eat, I would skip this place and go somewhere else. Lot of potential though, if they would make some staff/kitchen improvements.
MoreThe Enchanted Tiki Room for grown-ups.The Good News: Cocktails A+ (both variety and quality of ingredientsDecor A+ Staff attentiveness A+ Food B- It is by far the best Tiki bar Ive been to west of the Rockies, including Hawaii. The Bad News: the place is small so seating can be an issue depending on the size of your party. Also parking can be kind of an issue.
MoreMartin is a god among men. Perfection in every drink. Ambience and atmosphere in every nook and cranny. Solid food to create a good base. Especially fond of the Mac salad. But again, you come here, to a temple of Martin, for the cocktails. For the flames and the spices and the rums and the fruits, for the ritual for the pleasure for the joy for the mystery. There are many Pinnacle temples of the Tiki culture, this truly is at the top with the best.
MoreAppetizers are very tasty. Highly recommend the crab dip item. Tiki cocktails are delicious and reasonably priced.
MoreGreat drinks, fun atmosphere, interesting and friendly staff. The flaming small volcano was sized well for 2 people. Pineapple upside down cake was small but flavorful.
MoreAny rum you want, you can get. Very solid selection and a wide variety of tiki drinks. Wonderful atmosphere.
MoreBeen waiting a while to try this famous Tiki Bar and it did not disappoint! Lindsay (spelling?Out bartender was both skilled and smart! She helped us pick from the extensive menu (even though we are well-versed in cocktails and tiki flavor, there was A LOTand was kind enough to customize our experience with extra spirit-nerd explanations. The food (Kahlua pork, pickled egg, mac saladwas way above average and the pork especially rivaled actual Hawaiian beach luaus weve attended. Highly recommend this place! Be ready to wait a bit if you have a larger party, but I promise it is worth it!
MoreQuintessential Tiki bar with great drinks. Friendly staff and fun environment.
My partner loves rum, so whenever we are visiting a new city, I check to see if there is a rum bar for us to visit. This one came up. When we walked up to the covered windows and could not see inside, we were not sure what to expect. But when we walked in, we saw so many bright colors and tiki theme. We were sat at the bar, which would be my seat recommendation because you can watch the skilled bartenders make fun drinks the entire night. There are so many options on that menu, they all sound so good, even for someone like me, who is typically not a rum drinker. My partner was able to get a tasting of some rums we have never tried before too!The food options were great, we both wished we were hungrier because everything sounded so good! With our light fare, even the edamame was amazing.I would recommend going here - rum enthusiast or not!
MoreThe Hawaiian bread with guava jam is absolutely amazing. Taro chips and edamame are also solid options, and their drinks are wonderful. Some of the drinks are big enough that you really need multiple people to finish. Its small, but overall a great bar.
MoreFeels like you are transported to another world. The vibes are immaculate and the drinks are insanely good. Don’t sleep on the food—the Hawaiian menu is yum.
MoreA step into a different world. This bar is just fun. I loved my drink which was invented for Disney at his resort. The food was good, not great. All our meats were slightly overdone. The wait staff run all shift. You will probably wait to get in. Once you get a seat, you are so immersed you make the experience last.
MoreCame in from Phoenix and had to check this Tiki Bar out. This Hale Pele does not disappoint at all. The atmosphere and drinks are 100% authentic Tiki. If youre looking for some of the tastiest drinks in Portland, come here. Don the Beachcomber is smiling down on Hale Pele.
MoreThis is a solid, classic Tiki bar. We had to wait ~30 minutes, but the host was quick to turn tables around. The staff was very friendly! I liked that they have a scale on how boozy the drink is so you know what you are getting yourself into.
MoreSuch a fun bar!Hidden away on Broadway, this tiny Tiki bar makes a big impression. Hale Pele commits fully to the ambiance of feeling like youre on vacation at a tourist-centric bar on the big island. Enjoy extravagant fruity drinks, classic Hawaiian street food, and the bright and eclectic interior that occasionally releases atmospheric steam when a bug drink is ordered. Dont be surprised if the servers are lighting cinnamon clouds on fire every 5 minutes when someone orders a flaming drink. So, grab your most fun-loving friends and get on out to Hale Pele soon!
MoreDo yourself a favor and put this marvelous Tiki Bar on your To-Do list! Excellent drinks, good appetizers (pupu’s), and a simply fabulous experience. Come for the kitsch, stay for the authentic ambiance. Just great, boozy fun!
MoreGreat atmosphere, delicious drinks and food, loved it!
Fantastic experience! Staff was friendly and fun. The drinks were delicious.
Okay so I love any Hawaiian food, Island food from around the world dominates my top,10 favorites. However I had a really bad time here. The hawaiian bread had so much salt it was literally inedible. Like beyond salty it puckered & dried your mouth instantly. Super irreverent rice portion, like my rice was clearly old, dry & too little; My counterpart had a huge 4 oz portion,of hot steamy rice.Shes a pacific islander and Im a white male, The bartenders and servers were dismissive of me and basically only acknowledged her. Thats fine socially, but it was rude in the service setting. Her food was clearly better even though we ordered the same thing. Why.Now the drinks were a joke: 14$ for literally 5oz of liquid over 10oz of crushed ice is not a island drink. Its a sham. During the day, you might want to think about upgrading to nice shades for the windows, instead of blackout tint plastic. Its a tiki bar not a stripclub.to the owners I say, "Figure it out, bud"
MoreAmazing lots of people what awsome drinks an wonderful service also need to vome early if you want to get a place to park along with a place to sit
MoreWife and I stopped in Portland for the day on our way up to Seattle. Found this little gem. Absolutely loved it, was the highlight of our stay. Had that real tiki flavor I was looking for. Food was great, ambiance was great and the drinks kept us longer than we planned. Staff was friendly and quick. 100% will come back when we are in town!
MoreWhat an amazing experience. Feels like your not in Portland! Music, friendly service ties it all in to a fun atmosphere.Fun experience and really fun drinks that they light on fire. Food is amazing as well.
MoreUnassuming outside, but full of island decor & atmosphere inside. Small space with huge & delicious cocktail selection. Tasty food offerings. Great customer service. Be ready to wait for a table, especially weekends. Worth the wait. A must visit PDX tiki experience.
MoreThe best Edamame appetizers and a menu of famous exotic restaurant drinks from around America. The cosy atmosphere included occasional flashing house lights, sound effects and spectacular flaming drinks. Courteous, professional, and friendly servers. 5 Stars!SincerelyPortland DJ Dan
MoreA fantastic atmosphere and overall experience. Great cocktails and food. We went on a Thursday night and loved it, with only a 5min wait for a table. I recommend any of the rum cocktails as a few of us had them and loved them! A little tricky to get to if you live on the west side of Portland but well worth the journey!
MoreIts a small but great place. Had to wait about an hour to get in on a Saturday night. It felt like a tiki speakeasy bar. The drinks are amazing and bartender was super friendly.
MoreThis place is amazing. A hidden gem in Portland. It doesnt look like much from the outside, but stepping inside transports you into a Polynesian world. The ambiance is wild.I do not like rum, but wow, theyre cocktails (of which there are literally dozensare so well crafted even a rum hater like me can find a handful (or more, honestlythat blew my mind. Its an intimate little space, but its wonderful. I highly recommend nabbing a seat at the bar, if possible. You get a front row seat to the magic the bartenders are performing.
MoreComing from a tiki expert... this place is the real deal. Great drinks made with care and the grinds were on point! Definitely enjoyed our time at the bar and will come back every time were in Portland.
MoreI finally got to drink here. I have been going to Undertow in Phoenix for years, and people have said that Hale Pele is the equivalent in Portland. They were right. Very good drinks, and the food was great also.
MoreAbsolutely love this spot!!! Rene the bartender was great, Mike the host was accommodating!! Great atmosphere!!!
MoreSuch a delightful and fun cocktails experience! I have been here on a first date, brought out of town guests here, and stopped by after a concert at Revolution Hall on my way home. I love stepping into another world when I go to a venue - and thats totally what this is! Im a Pina Colada fan myself and this place didnt disappoint! There is a no alcohol, fun drink section for the drivers or non-drinkers to enjoy. Ive never ordered the flaming drinks but have also not been here a night where someone didnt - its quite a show with flaming and sparking cinnamon sprinkles!!! The scent - so yummy!Love the music and all the tiki ambiance. Comfortable place to hang out - tables for mostly larger groups, bar seating for singles and pairs. We got permission to start in a booth if we were willing to move - and we ended up not having to (Tuesday night, 10pm).
MoreVery intimate, busy and dark on a Friday at 5. We got seated immediately but after us there was a big rush of people stuffed in the tiny waiting area. Drinks were fantastic, the bar tender was great and the pupu appetizers we got were delicious.
MoreYou can’t go wrong with any drink option. The atmosphere, the drinks, the food and the bartenders are top notch. It’s such a fun experience in Portland. It’s a small bar so you may have a bit of a wait but it’s absolutely worth it.
MoreA fantastical excursion into The Islands. An experience not to be missed. The drinks are the main draw here. Bring an extra liver and get a ride. The food is good, definitely go for the Hawaiian bread!
MoreGreat atmosphere, drinks, and food! Definitely recommend to anyone staying in the area!! Super friendly staff as well
MoreGreat small bar to visit in Portland. If you want a fun, well crafted experience for a small group or a romantic date with shareable drinks to sip out of a volcano then check out the Best(?/!Tiki bar in Portland.Their Pacific island food was well made and thoughtfully kept to a small part of the menu. Try the crab Rangoon dip, pulled pork and definitely try the Mac salad.Though you didnt come here for the food, you came here for the first 80% of the menu which is a perfect tiki bar of tropical drinks. A drink strength scale for the drinks ensures this is a fun experience and really shows how the employees can keep themselves and their patrons safe. The whole bar reacts to specifically themed drinks and even if youre not drinking you get a show. Dont be disappointed if you dont order a big event, because someone else will. The wait staff are always open to guiding your hand if youre confused. But this place is FUN! 💯 Id suggest any of the shared drinks, the jet pilot and of course the zombie (this drink is limit 2 per customer so drink responsibly).Portland is a great place to drink and this place exemplifies it. If youre 21+ and youre just looking for something different then go here and be open to the experience.
MoreSuch a cool place! Love the vibes here! There are so many fun cocktails to choose from well have to come back to try them all. I highly recommend the Lei Lani and the Lava Flow and for food the pork bun is soo good!
MoreDiamond in the rough. Delicous, fun, entertaining cocktails. Super fun, interactive atmosphere. Amazingly helpful and the friendliest staff. Prob my fav bar in Portland shhhhhhh
MoreFun place with a cozy atmosphere and just the right amount of ambiance. The drinks were well made and the food was pretty good for a small bar. There was something in the air that made my eyes sting the entire time which did decrease my enjoyment a bit, but overall I think they did a good job with their little space.
MoreWas a nice spot to grab a (largedrink with friends! Of course had to get the volcano and the show that precedes it did not disappoint. We didn’t get any food but a lot of it looked really good, would recommend
MoreIm truly disappointed in the way me and my coworkers(6 of uswas treated, before we was even seated. We are here in Oregon from all over the United States to work (travel nurses). One coworker lost her ID here in Oregon but had a photo of it on her phone. The door man basically told us he didnt care ITS THE LAW he states, she still needed a hard copy ID. We drove over an hour to come to this place which was recommended. No where on the website do it states NEED ID TO ENTER. We was VERY UPSET and hungry.NEVER in my life have I heard of or seen a person being carded to eat. I can see if it was just a only drinks place, but they serve food as well.We went to another place very nice, bigger space, ate great food and had a wonderful time, plus great drinks because we needed it after that, and wasnt carded AT ALL. We been in Oregon since February and this was the first time that we got carded just for food.It really made us feel some type of way and unwelcoming. So we spent our money somewhere else.So if you are in Oregon and go this place have your ID, even just to eat.
MorePhenomenal ambiance though pretty dark for those of you who do not like low light. The drinks are beautiful and extremely reasonably priced for the quality. The kalua pork and Hawaiian Mac are delicious! Also, how can you go wrong when drinks are served on fire!?!
MoreCame with friends on a Sunday night. It was busy but we were seated right away. We got a group drink that was delicious! I also had the basil fried rice with tofu and it was super tasty. The ambiance was really fun and service was friendly.
MoreDrinks 5/5Staff 5/5Atmosphere 5/5Location 3/5Price 4/5Wait 3/5It’s not closed! Okay, we’ll it might be, but don’t think that just by looking at the blacked out windows. We almost made that mistake and would have missed out on one of the best bars we have ever been to.The drinks are phenomenal and there is a huge selection with a well labeled menu. The menu divides it into sections depending on what you like: spirit forward, certain alcohols, fruity, on fire, etc. then it will tell you how much alcohol it has, and give you a detailed description. Still don’t know what you want, the bartenders are super knowledgeable and friendly. Ours made us a drink not on the menu just based on what we told him we liked and it was amazing! Not to mention the drinks on the menu are great as well. The drinks we had were complex and/or rich and fruity. Most tiki bars are super tacky as well with any tiki thing they can find at good will. Not them. I actually really appreciated Most of the decorations that added to the atmosphere. It is a bit cluttered but many of the decorations are fun and speak well to the design.
MoreA fun place with great decor and drinks. The interior and interactive elements make it a really exciting and entertaining place to hang out, and it is justly popular. Expect to wait 30-45 minutes most nights.
MoreAlwYs a great time here. Everytime we are in Portland we make it a must stop no matter what. Beware you will have to wait (not that longon the weekends for a table. I suggest coming early when they open at 4 or 5, it’s a great , chill, good vibes kind of place and worth every penny and time. We always have an amazing time and best stories comes from here. Wish I was there as I’m writing it. Try the lava flow or if you are a close group of friends(because of covid you knowtry the lava bowl or drink it to yourself lol. They are strong but ohhh so tasty. Oh and the staff are sweet and fast service
MoreFun place great Pina Coladas and Mai Tais!Enjoyed the fish tacos, but they were out of Ahi which was a bummer.Proof of vaccination required, so dont forget to bring a pic of that with you.
MoreThis place is just amazing. Quarters are a little tight but I love how the bartenders area is set lower than you so you can be face to face with them while your sitting and ordering. Every single drink we had was awesome. They have a beefed up version of the traditional piña colada that is to die for. I love banana and the banana purée in this drink just made it all that much better. Not to mention their cherries they use on their drinks are bomb too. Lovely people working the bar and they know how to handle a large crowd. With the place packed, I didn’t wait any more than 5 minutes for a drink after I ordered it. I will definitely be back.
MoreThe epitome of perfect tiki culture and a welcoming bar. Seriously everything about this atmosphere is great, from the low lights, to the lava floors, to the random tropical storms. To go with that the food is solid and the drinks are awesome. Endless options and they’re always focused on getting out your drink fast. Check out a fire drink for a good time! Get here before opening for the best seats, otherwise expect a wait. Definitely stopping here every time we can!
