2121 University Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418, United States, Minneapolis
Colorful spot serving modern Vietnamese street food & craft cocktails in trendy, lively surrounds.
We ordered a bunch of apps and meals and they were all amazing! We especially liked the shrimp toast, and the Hai Tais. They also have great spirit-free drinks. The number 2 was a huge hit. The staff was super attentive and took great care of us. Would highly recommend 👌
The cocktails were good but every food dish we ordered had bad flavour. We got the spring rolls, the laab lettuce wraps, and the curry noodle soup. We actually ended up sending everything back since we didn’t enjoy at all. Luckily the Manager handled the situation well, didn’t charge us, and explained that they are “different”. We are foodies and can say with confidence that this place needs to work on their southeast Asian flavour combos. Disappointing but overall thankful for their ability to address our concerns.
We had a wonderful meal at Hai Hai, a casual but award winning restaurant in Minneapolis. Hai Hai is a festive place, designed for diners to have fun, and that Midwest exuberance was heard, but decibels allowed for conversation. Food was delicious. What stood out for our group were the ribs, the shrimp curry bird’s nest, and the crispy rice salad, but everything was good. Service was warm and helpful, adding to the good time atmosphere. If you don’t have fun at Hai Hai, it’s your own fault.
The perfect spot for drinks and lots of little appetizers with friends out on the patio. I love that Hai Hai dedicates its budget to providing its staff with quality benefits through a “service charge” rather than making them rely on tips.
I had their beef rendang and I almost cried. It was so amazing. Its almost as if I was at home eating with my family. 😣 I never thought food could make you teary. 😆
$10 for two ribs? I mean, they were good, but they werent worth $5 each. Lettuce wraps did not come with enough lettuce/cracker to use up all the meat.Staff was super slow and inattentive. One bartender disappeared completely and the other spent most of the night chatting with friends at the end of the bar, leaving the third to do most of the work.
We always get the s&p tofu, shrimp toast and crispy rice salad. OVER THE TOP DELICIOUS EVERY TIME. Entrees:beef dish and shrimp curry with fried noodles. Meh. Never as huge of a fan of the entrees as we are of the small plates and salads.
This is one of my top restaurant recommendations I give my friends and family visiting from outside of the Twin Cities + a common place my friends and I go for celebratory to “it’s a Tuesday” dinners. It has modern boho / transportively tropical aesthetic, flavor filled dishes, easy-to-snag reservations, and a drink menu (non-alcoholic too!you can’t go wrong with.My current fav dish there is the Hanoi Sticky Rice - I swear I have dreams about this 🔮
Such a great meal, worth the trip from Philadelphia. If I ever visit Minneapolis again, this will be my first stop!
I love this place and Ive eaten there at least 15 times. The food is fresh, innovative, and delicious. The drinks, although a little spendy, are wonderful. I wish they would update their vegetarian/vegan options. I love the Hanoi Sticky Rice but Im ready for something new!
This is a very popular Vietnamese and Thai restaurant that offers a simple selection of appetizers, salads, main dishes, and specialty drinks. To start, we had the shrimp toast and pork ribs. The shrimp toast was the star of the whole night, I could have ordered 3 and been completely happy. The ribs were just OK, slightly dry and had only 2 ribs. For main dishes we ordered the Hanoi sticky rice and beef rendang. Sticky rice was more crunchy than sticky, but good flavor. Beef was extra flavorful, but smaller portioned. Overall, food was good but for the cost, could be better. I would come back just for more shrimp toast and to try a cocktail.
Lovely venue (although a bit loud). Excellent SE Asian food. The menu is quite limited which to my mind is a sign of commitment to quality by concentrating on fewer dishes. This was my first visit to Hai Hai. I look forward to many more visits.
Wow, I read the reviews and had done a search for ‘best restaurant near me’.TALK ABOUT A COMPLETE LETDOWN !!When I received my order, the size of the entree looked like an appetizer, and was almost all WHITE rice and garnish. (See the photo). :(For >$20, I expected it to be a stand out dish at a Vietnamese restaurant - e.g. that price, or more, would have been absolutely fine if it was ‘quality’ food, but the dish consisted of a SMALL amount of shredded ‘beef’ and MOSTLY rice. The ‘beef’ was a SMALL amount of cheap shredded stew meat (at best a $1.50 a lb quality of meatthat even tasted slightly ‘off’. (Notice the small appetizer sized plate, that even looks small compared to my tiny hand)The waiter was rude and immediately grumbled about how if I didn’t have a reservation, people would be ‘coming in an hour’ !!!! I assume that since NO PEOPLE were in the restaurant, he felt that being rude for no reason was fine since the forced me to tip him for his ‘service’. I got out as quickly as I could and wasn’t there 15 minutes :0The waiter had stated the dish I ordered was ‘hot/spicy’ and asked if I was ok with that, and I said of course since I love truly hot food (which is tough to find in MN). Since the only spice I could taste was pepper, I am not sure how they thought it was ‘hot’, and more importantly, I am not sure why, but I ended up with a stomach ache after.$20+ a FORCED TIP is ludicrous for that horrible, micro sized, meal. There are NUMEROUS excellent Vietnamese restaurants in the area.I sure wish I had never had this place show up in the search engine results !!!!
Felt very rushed out. Was given a cheap Saran wrapped to-go order on my way out after being checked in every 5 minutes about leaving (I understand the bar area outside Is first come first serve). Would have spend longer if the bar staff weren’t so seemingly exasperated with us. That being said, the food and drinks are well worth the trip. Phenomenal cocktails and even better food. Biggest issue is service, get to go if you can.
Soo yummy! Atmosphere is gorgeous, relaxing and thoughtful! Service was beyond great.Shrimp toast blew my mind! Will come back here anytime I’m in Minneapolis. Appreciated the Non alcoholic fun drink options as well. Delicious!
The Hanoi Sticky Rice bowl is a must have. The salt and pepper fried tofu is amazing, I dont know what they put in that sauce, but I think I could put it on everything. The atmosphere with all the plants makes you feel like youre on vacation. The staff is on point and super friendly.
Had a great experience thanks to our waiter! She was so kind and helpful. I ordered their pork ribs, chicken bowl, and Vietnamese coffee. My friend ordered their shrimp yellow noodle dish. I personally enjoyed the pork ribs and chicken bowl a lot. They had lots of rich flavors and came out quickly. The Vietnamase coffee was more bitter for me so I asked for some syrup and they gave me some which made it taste so much better! My friends shrimp yellow noodle dish was too salty for our taste bud so we unfortunately didnt finish that at all. They were nice enough to get rid of that on our tab as well. Total cost was 42.31 so definitely on the pricer side. Overall, great atmosphere and service. Highly recommend you check it out right when they open because they do get busy!
Service and drinks were great. Recommend the shrimp toast, chicken thigh, and crunch salad. Skip the shrimp curry. Their take on an old fashioned was tasty and the collaboration beer with indeed compliments the food nicely.
As a Viet, I LOVE their food. Instead of serving cliche bánh mì or phở, they have very special unique dishes such as bánh xèo, bánh bèo, and chả cá lã vọng. Their cocktail is good as well. I had the sugarcane paired with Gin.Some rooms for improvement:- Ask for sauce separately. My dishes were both oversauced with fish sauce. Viet folks often choose to pour the sauce by themselves.- Have ✨Sông Cái Gin✨ please. It would match so well with the sugarcane cocktail.
Awesome place! The vibe is great, food and drinks were delicious! Our server was very friendly and attentive as well.
We ate outside on the patio Saturday night and boy was it cold. And we were in the area that had the heat lamps. The fried tofu was delicious as were the ribs. My son liked the sticky rice and I liked the brussel sprouts. Not so much the spring rolls.
Great place with amazing atmosphere and just perfect for plant lovers and anyone who is into green. My mom loves plants but my brother hates anything alive indoors other than other human beings hence the heads up. But we absolutely loved it here. Food tasted great although I wasn’t as impressed with the cocktails. Cocktails were overpriced and not worth it. The server was amazing and they charge the 20% gratuity upfront. I will certainly be back for the grub and the ambience!
Great atmosphere, but the drinks are not worth the price. They’re not as fresh and pre-made drinks. Definitely reserve ahead of time to avoid the long wait. I recommend the coconut shrimp and skewed chicken. It’s a good place for snacking, but the dinner plates are too small. If only they had a better location, buts it’s a good stop if you’re in the area.
I took my wife here for her birthday. The place was amazing! Food, drinks and atmosphere. I will be back 100% the flavors in the food were out of this world. We got the rib appetizer yum! My wife got your crepes and I got the dill fish. I could have eaten both meals by myself they were so good
Get the Beef Randang, Pork Ribs Tocino, Coconut Shrimp Toast, and Turmeric & Dill Fish with the Postcards from Palawan cocktail. Delicious.
The food was fabulous and the vibe of the restaurant is great. We had almost everything on the menu over the course of the evening. The pork ribs were exquisite. Very interesting combinations of Asian flavors. Our server, Nanda, was terrific, with great enthusiasm for the food and for our desire to experience the best. She was efficient and very attentive - kudos to her (she deserves a raise!). Highly recommended
Fantastic food, cocktails, and service. I would gladly go back. Thanks to Eleanore for the great hospitality.
Went for dinner on a Friday evening. Reservations required and it was crowded. Had shrimp toast and spring rolls for appetizers. Shrimp toast was delicious and crunchy. Spring rolls also were very good. . Cod dinner very delicious with noodles. Only negative was not enough fish.
Cannot recommend enough. Expertly made cocktails that are a nice twist on Tiki style drinks. The food was a revelation. Feel free to order anything on the menu from fried tofu to banana flower salad to the most tender chicken dish. My friends and I had almost the entire menu and each dish was uniquely delicious. No recycled sauces or spices. Eat here if at all possible. My favorite dish was the "Fried Brussel Sprouts" with pork belly.
Not going to lie, I had high expectations for this place. And all it took was one “Hi” from the host, and some funky, fantastic jungle feels to make me wanna ride the Hai Hai high for a while! 😁🤩Asian Cajun Noodles 🍜 🍤 Grilled Pork Belly Skewers 🥓 Pork Ribs Adobo 🍖 Spring Rolls 🌯 and the Balinese Chicken Rice Plate 🍗 from Hai Hai in MinneapolisThe interior of this establishment is SO. COOL. Walking in the door is like stepping straight into a natural Southeast Asian setting 🌱 🪴 A plethora of potted plants and deciduous decor adorn early every surface. All other areas sport eye-pleasing splashes of color.Starters: Pork Belly, grilled, on a wooden stick? Heck yeah, it was tasty! The ribs brought more of a hearty bite, and they came in a thick, creamy sauce worth double dipping. The pork sausage and pickled vegetables in the spring rolls brought a note of novelty to the common Asian appetizer.Main Dishes: My Cajun Noodles had a decent kick and pleasing flavor sure to make any seafood fan smile. My friend said the chicken was not the best thing he had eaten at Hai Hai but did like it.None of the food left us disappointed, and it is a bit pricy, but the experience is absolutely worth it. Who would have thought a few photosynthesizers could so profoundly impact a dining experience! Needless to say, it really grows on ya 😉
Food & cocktails are amazing. Pork rib Tocino is my favorite it’s so delicious, coconut shrimp toast is so good! The vibe is great. Just make sure to book a reservation to avoid unnecessary wait time.
Four of us shared our dishes and each was perfectly cooked and balanced in texture, flavor and spice. Nothing had "off," flavors or too much salt. The lychee cocktail was awesome and satisfying. Theres a good reason you need a reservation on a Tuesday night. Great food and very reasonable prices for this quality.
Great cocktails & tasty menu!Got the Hai of the Storm & Tour Bus Tales cocktails, spring rolls, and pork ribs tocino!Reserved a seat online and had a spot at the bar upon arrival. Great music, service, and atmosphere!
I really want to like this place. The atmosphere is nice and so are the drinks and wine selections. But honestly the food is ho hum. If you are new to this kind of food, then I can understand why you like it and thats fine. But if youve been to places like Union Hmong kitchen, Lat14, Ons Thai, or really a number of other great mom and pop shops, you might appreciate my view that Hai hai lacks the depth of flavor that these southeast Asian dishes can deliver when done right.
Absolutely delightful place. I can’t decide if I like the people who work here or the food better. The people are so kind who work here. They are very helpful with navigating the extensive food and drink menu. If you are feeling lost or overwhelmed with all of the different flavors and options - your server is ready to give you a recommendation based off of what you typically like to order. I have eaten here around five times and every experience is enjoyable with no interruptions of service. The food is consistent and full of exploratory flavors!
Came here for the sticky rice and water fern cakes. After moving to the midwest, it was harder to find more niche Vietnamese food and Hai Hai really helped me out there. Their cocktail offerings were very unique and well made with a lot of special in house liqueur. The over all place had an awesome vibe and I would visit it regularly if Im in the area.
Make sure you reserve for a table.Sunset at SaigonLife of Aquatic 👏🏻 are two amazing drinks.Tried the appetizers and they were really good. The ambiance was really good and I absolutely loved it.All in all a very good place for a date night!
Great food and great atmosphere. There something for everyone including vegetarians vegans, and gluten free. I am vegan and I’ve gotten the Hanoi Sticky Rice and the Balinese Cauliflower. Both are very good. The fried tofu and spring rolls are also very good. It’s gets a bit busy, so make reservations if possible.
This place is amazing there are no words to discribe the flavors that this place will give you! It’s amazing all in a good way! It’s kid friendly, and the staff are very kind and friendly. If your looking for a good time, great food, drinks, kid friendly place, and super nice staff the I would completely recommend! And wonderful decor! Thanks to all the staff for the wonderful experience!
The absolutely the very best meal I have ever had. So incredibly flavorful. Loved it.
Good food and great service. Tip is included as a service charge and we loved this concept.. no pressure to tip and all staff make decent wages as a result
Came here for my birthday meal and I was not disappointed! Unique food for the twin cities which I loved. Our highlights were the Hanoi Sticky Rice, the appetizer ribs, the crispy rice salad, Beef Rendang and the che milk soup dessert. Hai hai brings out food as it is ready so be ready to eat alot quickly if you want to eat foods at the appropriate temperature. The inside is very cute so go for the dining over the heated patio in the winter.
Hai Hai is a Minneapolis must for anyone who enjoys amazing food, fun hospitality, beautiful cocktails, and stunning aesthetics/interior design! The food is a fun way to share small plates with friends while sipping equally delicious and beautiful cocktails. I would be remiss not to mention Hai Hai has the best wall paper I have ever seen! The interior is just beautiful and makes you feel transported to a different place when you enter! Couldn’t love this place more!
It lives up to the hype. We went in without a reservation on a busy Wednesday evening and the host found us a table sooner that expected. The drink was dynamite and quite strong. Food is also great with a smattering of vegan options. Server was friendly and the ambience is nice.
$16.50 banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe• crispy turmeric & coconut milk rice flour crepe with bean sprouts, onion, pork belly & shrimp served with lettuce & cilantro ⭐️⭐️⭐️ the flavors are there, the quality is pretty good, but I wouldn’t consider ONE xeo $16.50 worthy. Crispy is right, the spicy sauce on the left is delicious as well. The quality of the vegetables weren’t great, the lettuce & cilantro were wilted. I’m gonna have to say my grandma’s are better. She spends a good chunk of time over the hot stove making one at a time & it’s time consuming-she uses one pan at a time & in 20 minutes she’s maybe got three or four; now that labor is $16.50 for one worthy. But, Jordan in training & provided excellent service. Very personable, patient & attentive. The ambiance is cute, a little overboard with the tropical theme, & I didn’t see one Vietnamese person, or Asian person in general, working the floor at this Asian fusion establishment.Hai Hai has a fairly small menu, & the whole 90 minute time limit to dine was a wee bit of a turn off. This is the second place I’ve been to that has a time limit-however, the start of the time wasn’t clear; was it once we got seated? Once we got greeted? Once our food arrived?I’m not keen on the neighborhood this restaurant is in, on my way home, I nearly got hit thrice because the drivers in NE seem crazier than the ones in San Fran.
WOW. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. We split four dishes and had four drinks for a considerably reasonable price. We started with the Banana Blossom Salad, which was fresher than you can believe - think fresh, flavorful, unique cole slaw without being drenched in sauce or liquid. We also started with the salt and pepper tofu, which was beautifully and deliciously fried and stacked in a savory cream sauce. We also split the spicy Thai grilled chicken entree and cauliflower entree, which were both so delicious! Aside from the amazing quality, flavors, and portion sizes, the vibes in Hai Hai are so tropically romantic and vibey. There is colorful wallpaper all over, plants head to toe, bamboo furniture, mismatched ceramic plates, and gender-neutral bathrooms that feature parrot wallpaper. Seriously loved this place and can’t wait to come back.
The atmosphere in this restaurant is absolutely gorgeous. It has a great vibe and seems great for hanging out with friends or family. The food was so delicious. My sister and I ordered a few dishes, which was super easy to share. The drinks are pretty strong so watch out! Otherwise, highly recommended!
An exciting menu and creative cocktail list. Make a reservation to sit at the bar and I would try as many items as you can, everything on the food menu was tasty. Friendly staff. The only reason for 4 vs 5 stars were all the flys while indoors.
We had dinner here with my cousin and her SO. The staffs were friendly. The cocktails were light on the alcohol and heavy on others. The Asian Cajun Noodles dish was a big disappointment as I didnt taste any cajun spices at all. The Water Fern Cakes (Bánh Bèowere thick and tough. My cousin enjoyed her Fish and Dills dish and my wife liked her Chicken Banana Blossom Salad (albeit the chicken meat wad very little). Would I go back? Not since there are other places to explore.
Get a reservation, its popular. Small menu changes every six weeks. Entire restaurant is open air, well ventilated and very comfortable. Meals are excellent, flavors well balanced. Prices are reasonable (except drinks). Highly recommended.
