Victory Gate, HM Naval Base, Portsmouth PO1 3QX, Portsmouth
Britain's first iron-hulled, armoured warship and pride of the fleet with an on-site visitor centre.
First boat we saw , with multiple floors and views from the boat . Unfortunately at time of visit had scaffolding.
Fascinating experience, brings to life how seamen lived and worked in an early steamship which was the height of technology at the time. Most of the fittings are reproductions, but very well done. Very knowledgeable and helpful guide.
A day on HMS Warrior is really impressive - the ship is in pristine condition and it is an amazing place to walk around. The tour was very informative and entertaining. It’s a truly immersive experience as you can touch and look at most things from lots of different sides. Takes about 90 minutes to walk around and definitely worth the visit as part of a dockyard visit.
The first iron clad warship, built in 1861, is located in Portsmouth Historic dockyard. With four decks to explore you can see not only her armaments but cabins, a wardroom, the boilers and much, much more. If you are interested in history, its a must.
Its very well maintained, worth to see in Portsmouth.
Great must see the guys on the ship were very helpful. I am partly disabled so cant go up and down steps. But they have a stair chair that they used to for me to be able to go to next level down. One guy we asked questions about some things was very informative.
My favourite attraction in the Historic Dockyard. An absolute beauty of a ship and a technical masterpiece for its time. Unlike HMS Victory, Warrior is filled with staff who all look and act as if they were from the time when the ship was first launched. It is a wonderful thing to walk around and its nice to pretend as if youre working on the ship during the late 1800s. The ship has been restored to an incredible condition and is a place everyone must visit if in Portsmouth.
As a naval buff this war ship is awesome.
Amazing place, well worth a tour. Unexpected mysteries and superb to see.
A must see attraction the first exhibit at the Historic Dockyards in Portsmouth.
You can wander on your own, actors that were there on the day l visited let my grandson try out a hammock! Fabulous experience.
HMS Warrior is a ship full of history and interest which you can explore at your leisure. Make sure you take advantage of the in character staff on the ship. They really make the experience fascinating and informative. If you can visit HMS Victory on the same visit to compare and contrast the differences. The dockyards has its own car park and Gunwharf Quays is about the same distance away. Even on busy days you should have no problem with parking. Portsmouth Harbour station is right next to the entrance.
What a great place for discovering history of Britain. Children loved the place and lots of stories behind. You must attend staffs (a majority if them are in Royal Navytalk and demonstration which will give you so much memory. You may think the entrance fee is a bit pricy but it us worth it and you can go back anytime within a year. You can also visit to the Gun Whalf for shopping after visit this place.
Has to be seen to really appreciate it size, Fantastic eye opener and a great experience.
The HMS Warrior is one of those historical ships which have a heritage filled with tales of bravado and marvel. The name of the ship bears testament to its valour at sea as it sailed as one of the most prized assets of the British Navy back in the day.
An amazing piece of local and maritime history. You can view the Warrior from afar but nothing beats actually being so close and being dumbfounded by the scale of this ship.Theres lots to see and I think actually being able to physically engage with this ship helps the younger children have fun while learning.Ticket prices are fair and help support the dockyards maintenance, which is more than worth it. A fantastic team of volunteers and staff bring this ship to life and Ill never stop being amazed at how passionate and knowledgeable everyone is.
This historic, mid-19th century ship being sold as an attraction is a very fitting description. As a part of the Historic Dockyard, the 40-gun ship is outfitted with authentic weaponry, a set of informative staff, and an in-depth view into how the ship ran and what life would have been like on board. We were able to attend a number of talks from the crew including how the engines ran and the personnel weaponry used, and my young brother was even allowed in a sailors hammock!Overall, a very interesting and fun experience, great for kids and adults alike, the only drawback is that for those that struggle with vertical movement the ship has lots of very steep stairs, almost closer to ladders, which were not the easiest to manoever.
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is hard to beat for a really interesting and enjoyable day out. We go often and highly recommend a visit to HMS Warrior where if youre lucky you will meet the sailor who has been there since about 1860, Captain of a gunner crew I think. He absolutely looks the part, hugely knowledgeable, unbelievable commitment to his role and never slips out of his time. Wonderful!!
Victorian Ironclad battleship HMS Warrior is a love letter to restoration. Only in service for a few short years as a warship, she finished her naval career as a floating fuel barge devoid of all fixtures and fittings during WW2.What you see today is how she looked in the 1860s when launched. On boarding you work your way down steep steps and wind your way through the decks going into the engine rooms and back up again. For kids and adults alike there is a collection of stamps to get on various parts of the ship to keep you entertained. As with HMS Victory and the Mary Rose there are guides and re enactors available to tell you the history of the ship and what life was like for a Victorian Sailor.Access for disabled is up via a ramp onto the main deck. Pushchairs (or perambulators as they were!are left at the base of the ramp and looked after by the attendant.
Very good if you like your maritime / naval heritage
Really excellent visit, educational for the children with actors in various sections of the ship providing commentary in period correct time characters. Listen to all those stuff and you could easily spend two hours here alone. Part of a fantastic day at the historic dockyard. Buy the yearly explorers pass for the family and come back free all year
I hate to say it, but it was probably my favourite part of the historic dockyard, and not HMS Victory! Once aboard youve got pretty much free reign around the ship, no barriers or guided pathways. The living history, live actors, on the ship really set the atmosphere and scene and made it the best exhibit for me. Down in the engine room, listening to a stoker about what their life was like, and the awesome power of the warship was chilling. Highly recommended.
Hms warrior was the unexpected highlight to my visit of the historic docks of Portsmouth. The ship is beautifully preserved, every member of staff and their reenactments were absolute perfection. Everyone was very helpful and knowledgeable. Couldnt recommend the experience more.
Fantastic history staff very helpful, grandson will never forget the trip
the first iron ship . Just outside of the entrance to the dock. Looks more comfortable than the old ships
The first of her kind, and the only to have survived.I can not give this star attraction enough praise. If you are lucky enough to visit on a day when the living history actors are there - the wealth of knowledge they have and how they deliver it is just outstanding. What a day.
Excellent attraction. Ship was magnificent with knowledgeable crew!Staff were amazing and very accommodating for wheelchair users.
It was great to visit the fastest and most powerful ship in Queens Victoria fleet. Unexpected discoveries about the huge size of the ship. Its not enough to go there one time. We need to come back 😉
Super cool!! This massive tallship was once the largest in the Royal Navy fleet and the world, and sported the most firepower of any ship in its day. Period accurate crew are aboard to answer any questions you might have about the workings of this truly impressive vessel. Definitely a sight worth seeing in Portsmouth!
Everybody knows about the Mary Rose and the Victory, but HMS Warrior 1860 is as much of a must-see as them. The worlds first fully iron-hulled warship, it is fantastically well-preserved and presented, with actors playing sailors of the era who really bring it to life. One did a gunnery demonstration that alone was worth the visit. Its also the only ship where they give you a free leaflet with diagrams of all the decks - really useful.Very highly recommended.(P.S. The café on board is no longer open, even though its still listed in the Dockyard guidebook).
Outstanding day looking around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, there is so much see we couldnt do it all on a glorious day in July, fortunately well have to come back on another day,it is also worth telling you to save your tickets because you can them again, provided you dont exceed 12 months after date of purchase, but its worth asking.
Unique. The engineering skills and ingenuity that went in to the creation of this steam frigate are so apparent when going round the ship. The addition of in-character crew members could easily have been a cheesy crowd pleaser but in fact they add depth to the experience by providing first-hand historical context. Please allow yourself a few hours to enjoy this marvel of East London engineering.
As other reviews have stated, "What an amazing experience!"A very impressive ship indeed, no wonder she never fired a gun against any enemy. Awesome and fearsome with her many heavy cannons. The staff in period uniform were a wealth of knowledge. In particular, Id like to thank Midshipman Murray for her twenty or so minute demonstration of small navy weapons (musket, pistol, bayonets etc), as well as general history of Victorian navy and family life and so on.Id agree with others, this is every bit as good, if not better than the HMS Victory.Do not miss it.A bit of advice, head here first after leaving the ticket office, as most rush to see the Victory. This way you get to wander around an almost empty ship. Then, later on, head off to see the Victory... she will be a lot quieter.
We visited HMS Warrior whilst in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. It is a spectacular ship, it was the largest Warship in the world. You have access to most of the ship. There are a number of decks, all as the ship was when active. There are many guides, some in costume who will answer any questions and are very knowledgeable in the history of the ship. It is a piece of our maritime history you should visit.
A must see, one of the highlights of the historic Dockyard. Character guides on board were very informative, a magnificent vessel. Loved it
A great historical attraction. You get to see all levels and how life wouldve been on board. The team knew lots of additional information to help give you more of a view of life on board (and some of them were even dressed as though they were from the 1800s). Well worth a visit if in Portsmouth
It was a steep ramp to get on and then in order to look around you had to climb up and down steep. Ladders. My elderly Mother was only able to look around the deck but there was plenty to see for her, we took photographs of the areas she was unable to access. It is a magnificent vessel and great to look at the crews living conditions and then compare with the opulence of the Officers and Captain.
One of my favourite wedding and special event photography locations. Great backdrops, fantastic staff and volunteers, amazing naval heritage. A wedding photographers dream location. Enjoyed meeting Uzma and John about their upcoming wedding.
Excellent....Fantastic experience....An amazing example of Victorian engineering...Staff/guides on board were great in their role play offering a wealth of information and facts about the ship and the Victorian eraWell worth a visit....
Ship in excellet condition, although the lower decks may be inaccessible for some due to the dark lighting and the cramp space. One of the best sites of the shipyard as it explains the daily life of the sailors and showcases the different areas of the boat. Its like going back in history. If you have to choose one site to visit this is it
Very interesting. Lots of access throughout ship and actors and information leaflets to find out even more.We took our baby, had to leave buggy outside and used sling instead to carry him. Stairs to various decks are very steep so take your time and watch out for things on the floor.
Well impressed, could stay inside all day long. Staff very helpful, they could talk forever about all the things on the ship. Just simply amazing... Ive been there 3 times and will go again just to stay in and try to find things that Ive missed it before.
Neat site to see! Wear trainers/sneakers. Make sure to layer (up or downyou will also need to be able to go up/down steep stairs. Really well maintained. Though I dont know how people can do more than 1-2 ships in one visit! LOTS of walking, but well worth it. Very nice time!! (Several restaurants on site and various gift shops).
Great place for both, adults and kids
Fun museum of an amazing war ship. Great historians on board make the visit memorable and authentic to the period.
Not only is this ship packed with lovely smiley staff, but also full of so much Victorian history and things to see, leaflets are comprehensive, and the ship itself is in incredible condition, would 100 percent recommend as a family day out.
Thankfully HMS Warrior is somewhat more comfortable to walk about than HMS Victory in so far as I could do it with a straightish back, the ship located just behind the entrance is accessed via the jetty where you pass a section of hull plating, I imagine wheelchair access could be gained to the top deck with some considerable exursion but that would be the limit as to enter below to the Main and lower decks and 24ft below the water line to the Orlop&hold would prove rather difficult. The ship is immaculate throughout and guides posted at various points throughout bedecked in authentic clothing of the period reenacting the roles for which they are dressed give the experience that living touch so to speak. The guide at the coal bunker was very good giving a dramatic insight into the life of stokers and trimmers the life blood of the ship as well as associated customs between sailors and stokers and also the pay. Each area has its own story to tell no doubt from the divers store, officers quarters right up to the captain himself, demonstrations take place throughout the day but we were unfortunate to miss these. Like the rest of the Historical Dockyard well worth a visit.A useful free guide is available an image of which Ive attached
Utterly fantastic! The beat part if my trip to the docklands. The staff yesterday (7th Septemberwho were doing the morning gun drill and the stoker were absolutely incredible! Very knowledgeable and well-rehearsed in their roles, making the visit a top notch experience!A beautiful ship with lots to learn from it.
The ship is fantastic, a marvelous piece of engineering, way ahead of its time. Second only to the victory on the attraction list.
This is a most incredible restoration and experience. I love the use of actors really adds a new dimension to the visit.
