Set in Downtown, this unfussy hostel is an 11-minute walk from the Royal British Columbia Museum’s history exhibits and 2.1 km from Beacon Hill Park. There are low-key, single-sex and mixed dorms, as well as private rooms. All come with free Wi-Fi and bedding. Bathrooms are shared; the private family room adds an en suite bathroom. There's complimentary breakfast. A games room features a pool table and foosball. Other amenities include a TV room, a communal kitchenette and coin-operated laundry facilities.
Update: This continues to be the worst place. Choose the Turtle HostelWORST HOSTEL IN THE WORLD. The mood here is unpleasant, staff welcoming. I had a guy jump into the beds with us in the night. The next day I was removed from the hostel without reason. Regional Manager, Robb Cryder, "A female staff felt threatened because you were leaning into the counter, ... Im at the airport. What does it really matter, your not there now and you got money?."Very creepy place even before I left. Night male housekeeper is stalking people using the bathrooms. Staff makes good appearances.
Excellent hostel. Everything looks organized, clean and new. Almost a hotel. Highly recommend it.
Great location and friendly staff. But nothing can make up for bed bugs. Of many hundreds of hostels Ive stayed in worldwide, this was the fourth I had an encounter with bedbugs. The managers seem to responding seriously to it, so hopefully it doesnt happen again.
Well this is the first time that Ive ever been banned from anywhere. Apparently I was "sneaking into the co ed dorms" when I asked about camera footage they got defensive. Im not mad, they lost a good customer. I work in Victoria and used this place often. One night I did have someone confront me about having my cell phone too loud while watching my fav hockey team before 11pm(quiet timethere stories jumped around and changed everytime I asked who accused me of doing such thing. So its obvious that someone was or is out to get me. I hope you guys hire happier staff.who happen to be better at communicating. Ill be praying for yall. God bless. ❣
Great place to stay if youre a cyclist passing through. Clean facilities, cheap and extremely welcoming. Laundry and a pool table were a bonus.
The only reason Im not sleeping either somewhere very expensive or in my car tonight is because I got a last minute change of plans. I called to cancel and discovered theyd put my booking in for a week late. Extremely shoddy.Ive also stayed at this hostel before and would give it 3 stars if it was run properly. Still better than turtle.
Worst experience ever staying at a Hi hostel! There were BED BUGS in my bed and I had been bitten inordinately. That has been an awful stay for me and I referred the situation to the staff who clearly did not care so much about my case. One of them was totally indifferent and they were really lax on the bed and dormitory treatment (they even did not clean the dormitory at all, just only the bed infected).I would not recommend anyone to stay there even if they say that they treated the hostel. Except that point, the hostel has nothing special compared with other HI hostels in Canada.
Great location but there are lots of bed bugs. Check the pillow cases and under the sheets and mattress. We stayed for 2 of 4 nights and got a refund for 3 nights no problem, they didn’t seem surprised to hear of bed bugs
Could be cleaner, but I think thats just hostels. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Great location near the nightlife and restaurants, but was a little loud at night because of that. One star off for the mysterious wet spot on the floor and large bug I saw crawling along the base of the lockers.
Comfy beds, great location right downtown, a little noisy at nights but the bars right across the street
I found my stay at HI Victoria to be great. The staff were friendly and helpful and the whole place was quite clean. Yeah, its right on Yates and across the street from Lucky, so theres a good amount of noise at night but thats what earplugs are for. The breakfast was typical hostel fare. My bed was comfortable and the locker was a $5 deposit, of which $4 were returned on check-out.
Always a great place to stay. Close to everything in town, but can get noisy on the weekends with a couple of nearby bars. A little traffic noise in the mornings
This is a great stop for self-supported cyclist to stop at when cycling across Canada. Its an Approved Accommodation for the Bike Across Canada Route Network #5
the sleep area is a bit dull and not appealing (at least the girls 20 bed dorm), the breakfast is more lacking than in other HI hostels i have stayed. this is not the staff’s fault, the staff is amazing and helpful always, but yeah, there’s a reason this is the cheapest one in victoria.
A cheap hostel downtown Victora. Price is about $35 with tax per night for a dormatory bed. The dormitory is large, however, with up to 40 beds. I stayed in October and it wasnt too crowded with maybe half the beds reserved. There are nice facilities like fridges, cabinents for storing food, lockers (bring your own lock), washer, dryer, computer, games room...The place is in a bit of rough area in Victoria, with two bars directly across the street. I could hear the routyness late at night in my bed. I thought the cleanliness of the place was fair. There is a small breakfast serving toast and jams, which is nice if you like that.
The Good: the beds were comfy, the location was great and the prices were very reasonable. The Not so Good: breakfast was the typical grains but lacking in spreads but this may have been due to me just catching the tail end. More concerning as a solo traveler is that the place is devoid of any atmosphere whatsoever. The main dorm also houses some 30+ beds which is a touch excessive. The bunks are solidly built though which is nice. There is potential here though as the location and size hints at something better.
I can understand the company having a policy about not having guests with a local address but the manager I talked to was so incredibly rude and elitist that I would never recommend it and am going to be posting for women not to stay there. Sandy Merium House is for women without options. I have money. I thought it would be fun for a week while I waited for my new house to be ready but I would rather spend 3 times and not have to deal with rude. And after reading the reviews about the guy stalking women in the bathroom I think I made the right choice.
Feels like a college dorm, but has nice amenities. Huge kitchen w/ food composting, indoor bike storage, and the TV is kept separate from other common areas. Also has good laundry facilities, only $4 per load for wash and dry!
Friendly staff. Beds are OK and location is great. The hostel serves a free breakfast every morning but it is only served during limited time: 7:30 to 9:00. A bit more space and privacy in the bathrooms would be nice but this is no big deal.
Kitchen drawers mislabeled, dorm room quite cold. I was here in winter. Whole place could really use more color. But its spacious and staff were nice.
Was kept awake by people yelling outside every night. The dorms are very large with up to 20 beds. The carpet in the dorm is badly stained and I would rather have Linoleum in a dorm, so the floors could be mopped. The kitchen compost was really piling up and it appeared it was only emptied once per week, since there were five, five gallon pails. This is unsanitary as the compost was decomposing. Kitchen area is very poorly designed. It would be nice to have some new matching dishes as they are inexpensive to replace. Staff were helpful and friendly. The pool table upstairs could be heard from downstairs eating area. People were respectful. Lights next to the beds would be helpful so you could have some light without lighting up the whole dorm. My locker was in need of some paint on the inside as it was rather dirty.
Great location. Its a hostel. Bed, showers, pool table, free breakfast.
Location is great, perfect for anyone visiting or wanting to see downtown Victoria. The service staff were friendly and helpful, and the whole facility was very clean. We did sleep in a large, 40 person room which made sleeping a challenge, but if you care about price over comfort then this is the place to go. Would recommend to my friends.
Wasnt bad at first, staff was helpful and male dorm room had a decent set up. Low marks because I was woken up at 5am by this gross dude in the bunk next to me was jacking off on his cell phone loudly. Didnt say anything because if it turned into a fight his hands were now a bio weapon. Not the hostels fault but it put a damper on my night #metoo
good place, and great price for the location. The dorms were clean and the staff helpful. We booked for two nights from Friday to Sunday and when we got back from our day on Saturday, we learned that our all of our stuff had been put in garbage bags because they put us in the wrong room the first night... I think they shouldve called us and they shouldnt have touch our things (placed on our beds and lockerwithout our permission... it was super weird and nothing like that had ever happened to me while traveling. The second room was okay.
This place was alright, although the elevator to my bunk bed didnt work, and how jaundice of them to not repair it for me, Im only 53 Im pretty much a pokemon
Very nice place. Close to downtown and the Seawall. I slept in one of the female dorms. There was about 4 of us in a room for 20, so it was very quiet in that way, but theyre right across from a bar and it might be a bit noisy until 2ish. Showers are nice and hot. Everything seemed to be in good repair. Fitted sheets on the beds and towels that are not just white indicates they dont have a linen service or anything. Friendly staff. Theyll let you leave your bag there during the day for free while you explore the city. I would come back again
I stayed in the private rooms. Decent hostel with everything I needed accommodations wise (wifi, kitchen, bathrooms etc). However Im pretty sure this place is haunted. Ive never believed in that stuff until staying here. A few spooky incidents. Other than that I would visit again, convenient location and decent vibe.
Good location, but sheets were dirty and the dorm was two long flights of stairs!!
I stayed here one night on Saturday, Aug 12. The next morning, I was covered in bedbug bites. Thats what happens when the main dorm room has forty beds. Room J, bed 6 if it matters, but it shouldnt because you shouldnt stay here.
The common areas are well below par from other hostels I have stayed at and the whole vibe is pretty negative. It is central which is good but I would not stay here again.
Location seems great, but there is a tonnn of noise at all hours, esp. Fri-Mon; Monday is theme night at the bar across the street, so it was yelling and puking and fighting until 3/4am. The bunks are super high, and none of the outlets in the dorms are mounted properly - plugs just fall out, so you cant charge anything. There are also not enough plugs-to-beds, and the ones that DO work require an extension cord and a powerbar. Plus, the 6bed dorm is actually a 24bed dorm, with one powder room for all females in dorms B/C. Dont think you are only with a handful of other girls - there will be more than a dozen going through your dorm at all times. The WiFi is weak and cannot be accessed in dorm B or C - it never shows up on any devices used, and when it does, it is excessively slow. I had to use data for the durationGood points? The air wasnt stuffy, the beds were sturdy (although dangerous), and location is great minus the bars. Reception seemed kind enough. Lockers are big, although made of wood and thus more easily damaged / easier to steal things out of.
Location is super great since its right downtown and everything is walkable. The rooms are pretty clean but outdated. For the same price I felt that I could have gotten an Airbnb that was nicer.
Overall a good hostel, however the beds are not good compared to other hostels Ive stayed at.
The staff individually are friendly and helpful. Victoria accommodations lean heavily on policies; this means they can not clean the washrooms but raise your cost of accommodations with ease. This Hostel is definitely a young persons game. The furniture in the common areas is dated and not too comfortable- but if you continuously readjust you will be okay. The dining area is commonly used as a pseudo computer lounge. The kitchen is tight but it works. They do have safe storage. They do not have a courtesy phone- they have an old-school payphone that rarely accepts your quarters. There are two popular night club spots across the street. so that is loud. Yes it is close to town; but its not the only place close to the city. If you need cheap accommodations- for short term and you are 35 and under- do it up.
First of, the staff is super friendly and helpful. Nothing wrong with them. The location is great too. However, the hostel itself is not a nice place to stay. I wish I had been told that the dorm hosted 20 women, I might have reconsidered. No intimacy at all. The blinds barely hide the light in the morning, the street below is super noisy. The most annoying thing was that I shared ONE power outlet with maybe FOUR or FIVE other women who didnt have any near their beds. That was a real problem. Also, the back of the room where my bunk was was "a difficult area for their wifi to reach," so no wifi except in common areas.During my 3 day stay, I didnt see the washroom clean even once. The toilets were absolutely disgusting, so thanks to the girls who cant keep their dejections inside the toilet bowl and thanks to the hostel for not cleaning up.For a nice last touch, the kitchen was in construction during my last day. The noise was unbearable.I can tell that people dont feel comfortable there, because its the first hostel I go to where people dont communicate with each other AT ALL. Witnessed a lot of passive agressive, barely tolerant behavior. Usually in hostels I make friends easily, but not there.
Stayed for one night. Shared dorms are massive (40+but beds OK. Location is good. Limited plug sockets and games room not much to write home about.
Guess where I am? it is 4 :30 am. There are no windows, the wall does not reach the ceiling so the light from the emergency exit door shines brightly over it. Each time the door is opened it makes a loud creaking sound and then clunk the door closes, above me are showers and toilets with a wooden floor and a wooden stairway to them - the only facilities for the dorm on my floor,.Now try and calculate the number of people staying in the dorm x the number of times they come in and out after 11 pm + the number of times those peeps need to get up during the night and add to that all those who come in after so called quiet 11pm, some at 02:30 and the answer is - yes the semi-private room Aps there is no aircon mentioned erroneously on website .
The 44 bed male dorm room is big but quiet. No power outlets at the own bed. Big locker...
Fairly clean as far as hostels go. Pleasant staff. Clean sheets. Very hot within the hostel and loud at night do to being across from 3 bars in the heart of downtown Victoria.
Positives:LocationAmenitiesStaffNegatives:The 44 bed dorm is HORRIBLEPrice, for a FORTY FOUR bed dorm, price should be cheapNoise from the street outside is awfulWorst sleeps Ive probably ever had in my lifeThis can never be anything more than a 3 star place, with the accommodation set up the way it is
Sleeping was an odd affair as everyones snoring mixed together and made it hard to sleep. Other than that bedding was decent and showers were adequate.
If you value some sort of privacy, do not come here. Dorms have 44 (yes, FORTY-FOUR!beds. Its noisy and smelly. Showers are communal. No outlets near the beds means you cant charge your electronics overnight and will have to spent a couple hours every day near the few outlets to charge your things. 10/10 do not recommend
I booked into the male dorm without realising it has over 40 beds. Thatd too many in one room, if this information was given at booking I wouldnt of stayed. Also the dorm has only 6 plugs for charging the devices of over 40 men, thats not nearly enough. It is a nice hostel, with several areas to chill out in and a good sized kitchen, but it needs to improve several important areas.
Great location, friendly staff, comfy beds. Within walking distance of many great restaurants in downtown Victoria. Very clean and well kept and the prices were very reasonable. Would definitely stay there again.
Great hostel. Very accessible location right downtown, just a short walk from the ferry docks. Staff is very friendly and the hostel is kept clean and organized.
I stayed in this hostel in July to do West Coast Trail. The facilities was okay for the price I am paying but there were some homeless kind of people as guests. When I rechecked in after completing WCT, the front clerk, Kelly (he looked homeless, too), demanded increased prices for the bed. Even though I showed him my reservation and price on the receipts he kept saying since we were not members and threw receipts at my face.I sent them a email complaining about this situation, but the manager reply he will respond to my email in 49 hours, but never replied.Think twice before checking in this hostel.
Stayed here on a recent trip. Great staff, excellent location. There is a large kitchen, TV room, and comfortable common areas including a large, well equipped kitchen. Dorms or private rooms are available. The hostel is in a historic building in a neighbourhood great for walking and exploring.
Clean hostel, good location. No usual hostel vibe but and they are strict on alcohol. Otherwise very good facilities
This is an excellent old style hostel. The staff are very good. Yes, there was a troubled young woman working there, but she has moved on, and thanks to the patience and kindness of the hostel management has done well. But thats the past, and some of the comments here say more about the commentators than they do about the hostel. The people who operate this hostel actually get what hosteling is supposed to be about, unlike many folks in the upper echelons of HI. Ive been visiting this hostel for years and have always been treated very well, my possessions have always been safe, and the staff friendly. Its also very bicycle friendly. Theres some good musical jams too. A real good place to stay.
