Stalwart institution with a simple cafe menu, a sleek wooden fit-out and ample pavement seating.
Good rule of thumb for a cafe - if coffee arrives after the meal is finished - it has taken way too long.
Super friendly staff, the meals are great and very filling and are worth the price. Worth waiting for a table. Dont be afraid to politely call out to staff as you may be overlooked during peak times.
The service was fantastic, we received our lunch very quickly and it was hot, fresh and delicious. I had the Open Steak Sando and it was so very tender, the garnishes were fresh and the fries were bang on. Definitely never a letdown when you go to Guses and my first time was over 35 years ago. Well done guys, well done.
Had a lovely brunch here! The halloumi fries were chunky and delicious and the steak sandwich was an absolute winner! Staff were all very friendly and attentive and the setting is very retro. Definitely worth a visit!
Great coffees, bad food, flag up the burnt chicken at first second, waitress insisted the dish as it, refused to exchange , again advise to avoid order food here
Favourite Cafe for over 16 years. After new management new style but still the same good service. Go Guss!
A few years since Ive last been to Gus. Food and service was still wonderful. Great to go back.
Had an amazing breakfast, the avocado toast was smashing. My parents had the big breakfast and also loved it. Clean, fresh and fast service.
What was once a great cafe for over 50 years in a prime location now closes in the afternoon rather than stay open at night. Coupled with so so service and well....Sad..but predictable.
Nice coffee and dog friendly. They just bring a bowl with water for Bailey without asking for it!
Super tasty feeds here - a great spot for brunch. Highly recommend the Panna Cotta breakfast or the breakfast burger.
I visited Gus place on a Saturday morning, a busy time for brunch, but the staff made it look so easy. They were very efficient and nice. They took their time in recommending the food and the drinks. I had the Chai Chai Chai and the Dirty Eggs, both very good. Loved it. Will definitely go again.
Food was great and service was great. Good ambience, although it was a bit crowded inside. The calamari tacos were delicious !
The service is always efficient and polite. The waitress who served us today was so lovely and accommodating to myself and my two young children.
The nice thing about Guss is that it has a lovely atmosphere to enjoy a coffee catch up with friends or colleagues. The outdoor spaces are well heated and comfortable even on the coldest days. Ive always found the staff friendly and helpful. The coffee is decent and I love the chai lattes.
Breaky was great only for the $5 add on chorizo that was sliced paper thin great for a pizza not for a side add on
Had breakfast here this morning before driving home to Sydney. Excellent service, friendly staff and the food was out very soon after we ordered. Generous portions, warm and tasty for a reasonable price. Will definitely go back next time we are in Canberra.
Signature Avocado, so delicious... lots of flavour & well seasoned, had it with a side of chorizo.. Yum! & my family loved their Brekkie Burgers too.. & the mushrooms with Big Breakfast were oh so good!! Great coffee, one of best Ive had in Canberra. & friendly attentive service. Thank you Gus!
Quite a cozy place for a brunch very well prepared food. The only bothersome things were the live plants up top which were shedding on the food and had to walk to a public toilet to wash my hands. They should have their own.
Excellent calamari tacos and juice. Detracted by an excitable staff member constantly changing songs half way through. This didnt necessarily annoy me, but it annoyed my wife who in turn annoyed me.I hope she doesnt read this
Fantastic, cosy atmosphere with amazing service, very flexible with my needs and always willing to accommodate as long as its within reason! My go-to cafe for any occasion :)
Delicious Mother’s Day brunch with my family. Staff were great. French toast is a must try!
Uninterested staff with 0 communication skills, more than a 30 minute wait for cold and bland food which to top it off came with lukewarm coffees that were barely average. Excuse was that they were busy, I agree it was but there needs to be better communication between wait and kitchen staff.
Very enjoyable breakfast, lovely atmosphere and friendly service. Only thing was the food wasn’t all hot, but it was delicious!
Good food but staff refused to allow myself and 2 year old to use bathroom. Sent us on wild goose chase looking for a non existent public loo. After illegally fertility the local flora arrived back to find the remainder of the table had been permitted to use the bathroom. No compensation offered, no follow up, poorly handled overall.
Went passed this cafe looks quite busy. My first and my last visit. Had to pay for pricey cold food and watery coffee. Cold chips. Cold eggs. Food just too oily. Not sure if they forgot to serve the food. Really disappointed. Will never come back.
Went there with my friends after friends graduation. Many of my friend ordered and the service was quick.Had a clean and green juice with crispy salmon fillet with a side of hollandaise. Good food , however i asked my salmon to be medium. It was still juicy but i prefered it to be a lil less cooked. Add on Hollandaise was nice but the salad was not interesting to me. Juice was exceptionally fresh and refreshing
Lactose-free cappuccino, cranberry juice and vegan avo for breakfast at Gus’, after checking out the Hot Air Balloons. Vive l’apostrophe !
Perfectly in sync wait staff each were helping cover what the other could get to. Food was brilliant. We had the Poached egg on avocado, French toast and big breakfast it was Simply done well and thoroughly enjoyed. Will be back next time in town.
Was very excited to take my Daughter to Gus’s for the first time….., what a total disappointment! Waiting staff was totally uninterested, food not as ordered, with Avocado sticker in the mashed avo and to add insult to injury a cracked cup and ridiculously high priced food. Will never ever come back
Food was fresh and well cooked (but std farenice coffee and prices ok for an upmarket city cafe . Service was so-so (waitresses were standing around chatting and we had to go & ask for a menu & to be served. After that, service was good.Overall pleasant experience.
I lived in Canberra as a student for a number of years. Gus’ was my go-to place because breakfast, coffee and cakes were/are very good. The crowd is a diverse lot, one can sit beside ANU professors chatting with students, Olympic athletes with their peers, government employees taking a break, partners meeting up with friends before going home. Gus’ is a Canberra institution. It must be cherished even more by its local community 👍
Ordered coffee when we sat down. Cool. The waiter never came back to ask if were keen for food. About 4 staff walked past us multiple times, none asking about our order (or lack thereofdespite us sitting right near the middle of the Cafe. Coffee came about 15 minutes later.
An interesting experience to say the least.Food portions are large and priced as such. Such reducing the size and price, all of us seated were unable to finish.Coffee had taste, but was served cold. The most confusing part about this place was trying to guess who was a staff member and who was a customer. Possibly suggest some identifying feature to distinguish the two?
Team coffee standupNice place - sunlight was awesome in the morningBut service is slow
This is always our breakfast go to when in Canberra. Staff are friendly and helpful. Menu always has something different. The all day menu suits the whole families needs. Kids are all of their meal which is unusual when dining out. Got there early which was good, as it got busy when we were leaving. Miss the waffles on the menu though.
Insanely delicious food, attentive and fast service, were super happy with our breakfast and drinks this morning!! I highly recommend
I really enjoyed the French toast! I will definitely have it again. The big brekkie was big portion like the name but taste is just okay, nothing special. Food was taking extra longer as the shop was really busy. But staffs were taking good care of the service.
Yum place to have weekend brunch. Great coffee! We had the classic avo on toast and zucchini fritters. Nice!
I really enjoyed my breakfast. Surprising it was filling as it looked very small. I am giving 4 stars due to lack of mentioning on menu that it is a little spicy and the eggs were way undercooked. Runny eggs are fine but this was the texture of uncooked eggs like mucus. Very gross to give customers raw eggs but oh well was still yummy breakfast. Lovely presentation could have added more beans as well. Will try again maybe later on and hope that this gets fixed.
Back again and still fantastic. Best breakfast spot in Canberra! Great staff and excellent foodReally enjoy our breakfast here. The staff were happy and thoughtful. They gave us good feedback on our options and didn’t rush us in anyway. The eggs benedict with brisket was delicious as was the mushroom bruschetta. Wasn’t the cheapest but happy to pay when we got the food and service we got. Keep it up!
Five star breakfast, dirty eggs and paninis are amazing! Staff are super friendly, food was served quick. Loved it!
Had great brunch in Canberra city centre.. has indoor and outdoor covered sitting, nice friendly staff and yummy food! I wish the quantity was lil more :)
It was a good experience, we just got there and sat down with some menus. We got served quiet fast.Very good dirty chai latte and brekkie burger! The ambiance is very cosy with the plants and the waiter and waitress felt very welcoming and nice :would come here again!
Eggs Benny was yum. Dirty eggs was great, wish is had a little more corn. Needed those juicy sweet explosions to cut through all the savoury. A splash of lime wouldnt hurt either. The tortillas didnt need to be cooked in oil, and the eggs could have been cooked a tiny bit more to avoid clear whites but all together it was super yum.
Active, friendly and fast service got us off to a great start here. Food was balanced well, even of the house was a bit flavourless. The only real issue was that the food came out lukewarm at best and unfortunately, thats a big enough issue to cost them a star.Really do want to reiterate how good the service was though - top marks there.
I got a simple scrambled eggs with bacon and mushrooms, and it was delicious. I really liked this place: was a bit nervous about sitting outside in their little enclosed eating space, because it was a cold day, but it was so warm in there, we were almost too hot! 😄 My colleague enjoyed his shashuka, and the service here was excellent and the staff were friendly. Would happily go back.
Really enjoyed brunch at Gus’s. I had the Shakshuka baked eggs, so delicious. The iced coffee was yum and a large glass full! The children’s menu pancake was so pretty- a single fluffy fat pancake with fresh berries and ice cream. Yum! No toilets at this cafe tho, you have to go back to Canberra Centre for the toilets.
Decent food. I had the shakshuka and it was great and really flavoursome. Although my partner wasnt a fan of the avo on toast, which despite its looks was very liquidy and arguably had almost too many tomatoes. Good coffee and a great atmosphere. The old-style diner look is really just great mixed with some nice music its a great spot.
Staff were very accommodating for a group who were cold, closing the out door section and moving 3 tables to keep the warmth in. Food was excellent, and simple. No excessive flavours, and very fresh ingredients. Ill be coming back.
