This salmon cannery built in the late 19th century is home to a fishing museum with guided tours.
Very clear and straight forward explanations. Very interactive and intuitive to walk by. Thank you for all the volunteers that helped us and talked to us.Greetings from Portugal
Excellent place to go and learn of BCs cannery history.
To understand the fish canning process, one must come down to the cannery and walk through this part of history. The Cannery has been presented in a wonderful way. You will learn how the process was done.
We visited the cannery on a rainy day while and had a pleasant time. There was a lot of self guided information which was good so people could go through at their own pace. We didn’t look into the times for tours ahead and ended up getting there during a middle of the day when there was a pretty large break on the scheduled tours. We hung around and was able to watch the canning machine run which was a definite highlight. If you’re planning a visit try and line up a time to attend a tour or two.
A hidden gem. Great for kids to see on a rainy day! The technological improvements in the operations of canned food are very well depicted. The federal government funds this place so the staffing is excellent and place is meticulously maintained
Fabulous museum showcasing the local history, very informative and well set out.
Good place to come to know more about history of the place and of the country
Fascinating! Good guides who were friendly and knowledgeable. Good signage and pictures showing personal side of cannery too. Very informative without being too much. Loved it! Great gift shop too.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a great place to visit to learn about the salmon and herring industry and the workers.
A very nice place to visit and learn the way things were done in the past. Our family enjoyed the visit very much.
This was a really interesting spot. The kids enjoyed it. My only criticism would be that it was a little more focused on the canning process and less on the people who made up the workforce. There was definitely a bit about this, but I feel like it was a really fascinating piece of history that the museum kind of glossed over. Nevertheless, would recommend.
Amazing! Its worth the time and money. Free for the kids and around 25-35 minutes per visit
Very nice museum to explore if you like history, canning historical machines. Great place for children and adults. Service and visit in French and English. 100% recommended.
Guided tours of historic Salmon canning facility and herring oil extraction facility. Incredibly educational and memorable. The machines still work and all the equipment is either original or authentic. Tickets are about $10 per person, free for youth under 18. Great to learn about local history. Tour guides were very knowledgeable when I asked questions.
An old fish cannery, turned into a worthwhile museum. Early fishing techniques, canning and shipping around the world in the early 1900’s.
Tour guide Jane had first hand fantastic knowledge and history of BC fishing and canneries! Thanks JANE! My nephews first visit and he thoroughly enjoyed the displays.
So quaint and tranquil this entire little fishing village is..
A neat museum! Great opportunity to learn more about the fishing industry on the west coast. The staff were friendly and we did two tours. A nice gift shop as well. The museum has lots of interactive displays and is interesting for adults and kids alike.
Great history of the cannery and the kids space is awesome! Very entertaining for the little ones! Yea
Outstanding preserved snapshots of early colonial life in BC. Really helps understand the lives of my ancestors from England. Great displays and great setting, nice say out in Steveston.
So much to see here! Not just about the 125+ years and the various lives this facility has taken on, but also information on fishing, industry, immigrant workers at the turn of the 20th century, and more. The guided school tour was very informative and interactive. The facility itself is very well maintained, loads to look at and interact with. Well stocked gift shop too!
Absolutely a must see town, loved it there ...reach historical fishing town, museums, beautiful park with walking trails ....lots and lots to see
What a nice museum. My 2 granddaughters ages 8 and 5 enjoyed it immensely. Found it very interesting and lots of activities for the girls. This museums greatest asset is its staff. We came in contact with 3 ladies. All very friendly and knowledgeable. They went out of their way to be welcoming and informative and made the girls very comfortable. They were interesting to talk to. This was the girls Pro D Day. Nice time!
A great place to explore. Wear a sweater or jacket as its quite cool inside. They have a very comprehensive display of the history of canning on the west coast, and in this plant in particular. Lots of unique equipment and tools and a very comprehensive history with pictures and signage. 30 to 45 minutes with a nice attached gift shop and knowledgeable and very friendly staff.
If you like fish, history, canning, machines, Canadiana, and museums. This is the place for you. A seriously unique and well maintained museum on the rich history of fishing and canning in British Columbia. Very educational. There are a ton of old machines, fishing paraphernalia, and displays here. Keep an eye on the walls to see decade old fish scales!
We came here this past weekend and it was our first time. The staff was very helpful, friendly and informative. They gave us informations about the history of the museum, the layout and explained everything we needed to know. The museum is spacious and nicely decorated with lots of Christmas trees which museum visitors can vote for which Christmas tree we liked the best. The gift store has some nice stuff, my daughter bought a pillow and since it’s over 20$ we got a free salmon.
Visited the Cannery with my childs school field trip this morning. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The team at the Cannery made learning fun! The kids (and adultswere totally engaged with well organized presentation. Fantastic job! Must visit if you havent already.
This was another big surprise. Many years back in our younger days, some of us visited this, either dragged by parents or part of a school trip. Something certainly has changed! There is quite a bit to see here now, very educational and I think worth the price of admission. Could definitely spend quite a bit of time here.Is it worth a return trip? Hmmm... maybe not unless they change the displays. Not if youve spent a few hours here perusing everything. But everyone should go at least once. Thumbs up on this one, I mean even the kids in our group liked it.
I have lived in Vancouver for two decades and visited Steveston many times. Never thought of going into this place. Finally decided to visit today and Im glad I did! The exhibits are well laid out and informative. The short film shown in the beginning told some interesting stories. I took my time, read everything and learned lots! And the staff were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable! Such a great experience! Highly recommend!
I have lived on the lower mainland for years. I have been to Steveston some any times and walked by the Cannery museum. What a great historical place! Very educational, well done, informative. I highly recommend watching the introductory video. Well worth it!
Great experience. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the cannery. The gift shop was great and the price was super reasonable.
A very interesting place! At first glance, it might not seem like much, but if youre into machines and history, this is a must go. The exhibits are exactly as they were when running, and the staff are very much informed and are willing to guide you through the place.
Who would have thought that a museum on the history of BC canning would have been interesting?!! -It was simple, but I found it super interesting. Detailed descriptions of how innovative people were in the early 1900s and did not have electricity, and how they used canning as a means of keeping their delicious salmon fresh! The museum also goes into detail of the struggles that the people faced on a daily basis.Loved it. Highly recommended!
Unfortunately this place was closed due to COVID and we were not able to get inside to take the tour. From what we saw outside it looks like it would be very interesting. Hopefully in the future we will be able to return and see the inside.
This was unplanned visit, and it went amazing. The museum is definitely worth visiting, you learn so much about the history and fishing. The kids ahve their all booklet so they have many things to do. I must say that every single member of the staff was nice and helpful and full of knowledge. We will definitely come back again!
Always a great time at the cannery! Have loved going here since i was little. Fun and engaging for all ages!
Great place to bring the family for the day. There are a lot of cool old things and machines to see and learn about from the museum. The guides are great and very knowledgeable about the history of this place. My kid had fun. Just heads up, there is no heat inside the museum, its as cold as the temperature outside. Came here winter time.
Built in 1894. Historically, one of the provinces largest canneries. Opened during COVID-19 pandemic period with directional signage and reduced capacity. Free parking.
Great historic site to take your kids to learn about Steveston Villages fishing history. Nice gift shop inside the place.Photos © Sanjib Dutta
The Georgia Cannery Museum shows the well-preserved history of Steveston in one little exhibition. The industrial motors, pipes, and wheels opened our eyes to the heavily mechanized salmon industry way back in the 1920s. This is a great place to take pictures with NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY (prime lenses are finefor your next adventure in Steveston :).
If you really interested in fishing and canning history of Vancouver! Its good place to visit!I study food science~ the food processing line is great!
We came here for the Easter thing but we came away learning about fish and the cannery. It’s a relatively small museum but it’s neat.My ONLY suggestion and REQUEST is if you have loose candies maybe use a ziplock bag instead of these cheap bags where glitter can be imprinted on the loose candies. I feel it isn’t as sanitary because the bags aren’t really sealed.
Very interesting historic site. The stories and building have been so well preserved. My family and I spent over an hour at the site and we all found it interesting. I appreciated that the past wasnt white washed and that the social history of the cannery was an important part of the story telling.
I had a great time wandering around the Cannery. It reminds me of the old cannery in Monterey California that I went to back in the late 60s. Im glad to see some history is being preserved.
This National Historic Site is an amazing place. There is so much to see and look at, and you get a great combination of history and education. This is a must go place if you have never been.
Its a wonderful place for learning the history and how the fish can is been made. The staff are cute and warm heart. Gave us a unforgettable tour
We visited the cannery on Canada 150 special offer period. Even tourist are free entry. The museum has great explanation to introduce Canadian early immigration and fishery history. The old production line is also clear demonstrated.
School field trip. Well laid out museum with lots of interactive displays and a good blend of hands on, plus photos and replicas. A nice way to spend a couple hours in Steveston.
Learn the history of the largest salmon canning facility in BC of the early 1900s.
Excellent place to learn about the process of industrializing salmon and herring. Beautiful displays and super friendly staff. This is a place not to be missed when visiting charming Steveston Village.
