1 of 51 shaktipeethsGuhyeshwari Temple is one of the revered holy temples. It lies about 1 km east of Pasupanath and is located near the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Nepal. This temple is dedicated to Guhyeshwari. The goddess is also called Guhyekali. It is an important pilgrimage destination for general Hindu and especially for Tantric worshipers. The temple name originates from the Sanskrit words Guhya (Secretand Ishwari (Goddess). In Lalitha Sahasranama the 707th name of Goddess is mentioned as ‘Guhyarupini’ meaning The form of Goddess is beyond human perception and it is a secret. Another argument is that it is the secret 16th syllable of the Shodashi Mantra. Guhyeshwari is a Shakthi Peetha and is the place where Devi Sati’s knees is believed to have fallen. Here Devi is worshipped as Mahamaya or Mahashira and Lord Shiva as Kapali. The temple is also mentioned in the sacred texts of Kali tantra, Chandi tantra, Shiva tantra Rahasya as one of the most important places for gaining the power of tantra. The Vishwaswarup of goddess Guheshwori shows her as a many and different color headed goddess with innumerable hands. The temple possesses divine female energy force and is considered as the most power full tantra peeth as it is built above seventeen cremation ground.

Be here in one of the most important shaktipeetha in hindu culture. Its guhyeshwori temple.Guhyeshwari Temple (Nepali: गुह्येश्वरी मन्दिर), also spelled Guheswari or Guhjeshwari, is one of the revered holy temples in Kathmandu, Nepal. This temple is dedicated to Guhyeshwari or Adi Shakti. The temple is also a Shakti Peetha and is about 1 km east of Pashupatinath Temple and is located on the southern bank of the Bagmati River. It is said that this temple is the Shakti chair of Pashupatinath Temple. It is an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus, especially for Tantric worshipers. King Pratap Malla renovated this temple in the 17th century. The goddess is also called Guhyekali. The temples name originates from the Sanskrit words Guhya (secret, hidden, or caveand Ishwari (goddess). Literally, the name "Guhyeshwari" stands for the goddess of the cave (गुफाको ईश्वरीand the origin of the name aligns with the Hindu legend of Sati, her self-immolation when She turns into Adishakti, the Goddess of cosmic energy, at Daksha yagna. In Lalitha Sahasranama the 707th name of the Goddess is mentioned as Guhyarupini (The uncanny form of Goddess intimates that She is beyond human perception, and the invisible location where She resides allows Her to render justice impartially. Another belief is that it is the secret 16th syllable of the Shodashi Mantra(LS 137th verse: Sarasvati shastramayi| Guhaamba guhyaruupini||).The mythology of Daksha yaga and Satis self immolation had immense significance in shaping ancient Sanskrit literature and even had impact on the culture of India. It led to the development of the concept of Shakti Peethas, thereby strengthening Shaktism. When Shiva was insulted by his father in law (i.e., Daksha), his wife Sati Devi was so angry that she jumped into the flames of the yagya (a ritual involving offerings to a sacred fire). Shiva was grief-stricken and picked up her corpse and began to wander about, as her body parts fell to the earth. There are 51 Shakti Peethas which are believed to be enshrined with the presence of Shakti due to the falling of body parts of the corpse of Sati Devi, when Lord Shiva carried it and wandered throughout Aryavartha in sorrow. The 51 Shakti Peethas also correspond to 51 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet. One view is that Guhyeshwari Temple marks the spot where Satis hips or hind part is said to have fallen. The term guhya is often mistaken as referring to vagina. The genitals of Sati Devi is said to have fallen at another Shakti Peeth worshiped by the name "Kamarupa-Kamakhya" in Assam. Another version is that Guhyeshwari Temple marks the place where both the knees of the goddess is said to have fallen. Each Shakti Peeth is dedicated to a Shakti and a Kalabhairava. In Guhyeshwari Temple, the Shakti is Mahashira and the Bhairava is Kapali. The goddess is worshiped at the centre of the temple in a kalasha (water jarthat is covered with a layer of silver and gold. The kalasha rests on a stone base which covers an underground natural water spring, from which water oozes out from the edges of the base. The temple stands at the centre of a courtyard and is topped with four gilded snakes that support the finial roof. This temple is revered by Tantric practitioners, and Tantric rites are performed in this temple. The temple is also mentioned in the Kali tantra, Chandi tantra, and Shiva tantra Rahasya and is regarded as one of the most important places for gaining the power of tantra. The Vishwasorup of goddess Guhyeshwari shows her as a many and different coloured headed goddess with innumerable hands. The temple gets much crowded during Dashain and Navaratri.Source : wiki

Beautiful temple of what I saw but I am curious if any foreigners who demonstrate that they are a Hindu have been allowed in this temple. If a Nepalese Christian was not allowed in a church in Europe because of their skin colour it would be in the news.

One out of 51 Shaktipeethas. One should remember the sacrifice of devi SATI in that Temple. Shiva means Supreme Truth. And in order to get that Supreme truth, She didnt bothered destroying her body. One of her organ fell unto that place , and hence named as mata guheshwari. which is just near to Pashupatinath temple.Jay mata SATI.

For a deeply devoted spiritual practitioner, it is a tragedy that this powerful energy site is banned to non-hindus (as goddess doesnt really care for these man made religious labels). Even if you do your sadhana for uears and live in India, they wont let you in.Otherwise it is a beautiful peaceful place. And people who work around the temple, the ticket counter, chia and flower stalls, are absolutely lovely to chat to (and they compassionately listen to your complaints about not being allowed in :P).

Great Goddess of Hindu, feel blessed. This temple has a great story. This temple is of Goddess Sati. She was a daughter of Dakshaprajapati and spouse of Lord Shiva. Once upon a time, her father had a ceremony when he did not invite son-in-law Lord Shiva. Sati didnt tolerate the ignoring her spouse Lord Shiva and got fired. Lord Shiva became angry and carried her dead body on his shoulder. He started to travel universe carrying her body with loosing conscious. During his travel, one of the body part heap was separated and dropped at this place. So, the temple was built on the memory of Goddess Sati. She has the source of power against the demons and the Hindu people believe it.

It was a fantastic trip. The road leading to the temple is beautiful and well-kept. The temple area is very clean, and there is a real feeling of positive energy in the environment. You must see the magnificent view of the city and the Bagmati river from this location. There is always a huge rush, especially in Navratri, therefore it is best to attend during the off season. It is best to go in the afternoon for a wonderful "Dharshan." We went in November month at that time there is no much crowd. If you are visiting Kathmandu (Nepal), you must pay a visit to this historic temple, which holds tremendous significance and where it is believed that your prayers will be fulfilled.

This is a most ancient places around the kathmandu valley and lies within the famous Pashupatinath Temple Area which is amongst the seven UNESCO World heritage sites in the Kathmandu valley. The Guhyaswari temple lies atop a small hill beside the Bagmati river banks along the North Eastern side of the Pashupatinath temple. This place has been of great significance since the ancient times and has been mentioned in almost every ancient texts as lord Shiva himself was responsible for the creation of this shrine, according to the legend after the untimely death of lord Shivas wife Sati Devi(who sacrificed herself in a holy fire after not being able to bear the insulting words for lord Shiva by her own fatherher body parts fell in this site while lord Shiva roamed around the mountains carrying her dead corpse. The temple is located amidst an ancient forest and is of unique architectural importance due to its unique design and construction. Its well protected by the security forces of Nepal and ofcourse the wild monkeys who dwell in the forest that surrounds this shrine. The Guhyaswari temple is an important pilgrimage site for all Hindus and the followers of Shakti Traditions of the Yogic practice. Almost everyday it sees a scores of pilgrims and visitors from all over Nepal and the world. There is a remarkable and unique Pipal tree standing adjacent to the main entrance gate of the temple complex. Its a pleasant placefor people who seek a quick escape from the crowd of the Katmandu city and feel the trance of the wild forests that border the path leading to this holy shrine of the Mother Shakti.

Its a beautiful little divine worship site, by the banks of bagmati. Its easily accessible from the pashupatinath temple, yet not much popular like that of the latter. The intricacies of the architectural motifs used in this temple add a satiating charm. It is located in a serene location, so it wont be much of an issue to give it a visit. And trust me, this place wont disappoint, will amaze you rather.
