Grubsteak Mining Company Bar & Grill - Steak house in John Day, United States
Good food
Food was tasty and service was great
Awesome service, great burger!
Waitress was stressing with the 5 tables she had, mashed potatoes were cold, steak was overpriced and overcooked would not recommend. Best thing was the poppy seed salad dressing.
April Wilcox use’s Jeff only for insurance I have the proof. She cheated constantly and gave my husband trichomoniasis and a UTI
My compliments to the chef on his awesome pickaxe hamburger. Amazing food.
Decent price for a steak dinner.
If you cant find help, then adjust your hours to maintain your ability. Food was cold, took forever. Owner hurt their reputation because they couldnt serve. Its the new society, adjust to it or youll close.
It was absolutely cooked to perfection like everything about it would definitely go back
1 hour 45 minutes to get food, worst service ever
After attending a funeral our group of 10 people headed there for lunch. Was pleasantly surprise. They had great food, great service. The bill was way less than I expected. I highly recommend this place.
Food is always great had to hunt down a server, but after that they were on top of it.
Very friendly service, food was good, price was reasonable. It was a much bigger place than it looked from the outside. We will stop there every time we go through JohnDay. A very pleasant experience after the place in Prairie City last year.
It was was their second day serving breakfast again. The pancakes were excellent and the sausage was the best. Even the coffee was wonderful. This is the place for breakfast!
Slow service, took over 1 hrs to get our meals. The food was blah.
Great place, excellent food. One of the best dishes Ive ever eaten!
Excellent service, and all the food was delicious. We will stop by there again next time we are in the area.
We had valentines dinner and the lobster was excellent... Definitely worth going to eat it if on John Day....
Excellent food, service and drinks. Highly recommended.
Great food! Chicken fried steak was tremendous! Bell pepper soup amazing! Great service and friendly atmosphere!
Bartender/Waitress was so friendly!!! Great food. Cabbage soup was to die for!!!
Even though they were extremely busy, we had GREAT service, the food was delicious, and affordable to feed my family of five.
Always enjoy eating there. Lisa is a great and friendly waitress.
Passing thru Labor Day weekend not much open They were super busy we sat in back Service was excellent Staff was super friendly and made us feel welcome I had a Ribeye and Wife had Burger.Best steak I have had in long time.Super simple comfort food.Salad was great and French fries were excellent.
Stopped by after seeing other great reviews. We loved it. We had the Prime Rib, a Black Iron steak, w/ many sides to choose from all excellent and the Appetizers & Desert were totally Yummm! Happy with the final bill too 🙂
Totally worth the trip just going into there to eat. Awesome food, great staff, and just all around inviting
Great burgers, yummy fries, friendly folks. Great price.Food hot.
Awesome food, friendly staff, great service and all around fun place. Thanks!
Under staffed for fathers day dinner. There were 20-30 people here and only one waitress... she was also working the bar in the back, so Im pretty sure nobody got GREAT service. I waited 35 minutes before they took my order. Food came out pretty quickly. My baked potato was cold enough that the butter wouldnt melt. The prime rib was good. Wrong salad dressing.Nobody checked to see how I liked the food, so no ability to fix any issues. I know everyone is short staffed right now, but it didnt seem like anyone cared.I have had a great experience here before, but this visit was way below their standard.
Very impressed with the food quality! Thick cut, real bacon on hand pressed burgers. Rolls look like they are made in house. Fries are NICE breaded steak cut fries. Wait was a little long, BUT it definitely worth the wait as everything appeared fresh and made to order.
Found this little jewel of a restaurant tonight while passing through John Day. Incredible delicious food. My husband had a flatiron steak with mashed spuds w white gravy. Cooked perfectly, tender and juicy with a sweet savory sauce. One could tell spuds were “real” creamy mashed with homemade white gravy. i had hamburger steak w grilled onions and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. A hearty sirloin hamburger with tasty brown sauce that awakens your taste buds to flavor of home cooking . My 1000 island dressing was homemade. Sooooo yummy.
We had the bacon bacon burger & halibut basket. Food was great. Service was great. Nice clean friendly place.
Their Bacon Bacon Burger is honestly the best burger Ive ever had! Cute little place with friendly faces who welcome you in...just like home.
The food was great! But when we ordered our alcoholic beverages, there was barely any in there. I ordered a Crown & 7 and it was a lighter (almost clearcolor than the Corona Extra my husband ordered; it tasted like only 7-Up. If I were to go anywhere else it would have been stronger and actually tasted like Crown with 7-Up. For sure going elsewhere for drinks with friends.
This is a great little place.Had the grubsteak burger with onion rings. The burger- grilled onion bacon and cheese on sourdough bread. Super good. The onion rings were excellent with an awesome dill ranch. Then the peach cobler. It was excellent. With the vanilla bean ice cream melting on it you cant end a meal any better.
Food was medium to good, but service was horrifically slow from the kitchen (not the servers fault). We were there in early afternoon on a quiet Saturday - very few customers - and still waited for over half an hour for a Rueben sandwich and a cup of soup. Too bad.
Stopped in tonight for dinner and was very impressed dispite a few questionable reviews. The service was quick and friendly (thanks Chantel!and the food was perfectly cooked and delicious! Thanks for making John Day a memorable stop on our Eastern Oregon road trip. Ü
Steaks were amazing!!! Great quality cuts that were cooked perfectly. Hubby and are already talking about coming back next time were in town. (PS we havent even left the restaurant yet.)
First was disappointed they had no changing table to change my baby. Had to go out to my car. Second we waited OVER AN HOUR for our food. I got a pulled pork & the bun was soggy. (Ew!Hubby got bacon burger and it was burnt to a crisp... Waitress never apologized for the ridiculously long wait or asked how the food was (maybe she knew it suckedi dont know. Not sure we will ever go back !
My husbands steak was very good. My seafood platter seemed to be frozen. It was supposed to have clam Strips and they substituted popcorn shrimp with out asking me first. The mashed potatoes would have been good if they were warm.
My husband and I were traveling home and were hungry and wanted something cold to drink. We stopped in at 1188 brewery and got no service so we left and walked a couple over doors up to the Grubsteak. Jackie was our waitress and turned our evening around! She was so sweet and genuine. She is the kind of person you want to help your weary travelers. We will definitely return and will recommend The Grubsteak Mining Co.! Thank you for a great experience!
Saw the wonderful reviews when looking for a place close to the John Day Motel. Since we knew nothing about it we decided to go in and hope for the best. Whelp, that’s what we got! THE BEST!! Prime rib to die for. Perfectly rare as requested. Jackie, the server was a delight and wonderfully attentive. Thank you Jackie. (My doggie 🐶 loved the doggie bag as much as I did!
We had fettuccini with shrimp, saucing with homemade cream and their signature steak. Just awesome!! Still delicious even after microwaved.
Great place to stop along U S 26. FYI if youre in a hurry, this not McDonalds: food is made fresh and definitely worth the wait. Staff is friendly and efficient. Prices are good. Value is great!
Casual dining downtown John Day. Steaks, seafood, amazing meatloaf "just like Grandma used to make." Excellent service and fair prices. You wont leave hungry!
Their window advertisement showed a French Dip sandwich with fries and salad, for a decent price, $10.99 if I remember correctly. The service was non existent, and when the waitress was around, she was less than friendly. I received my two orders, it was in a plastic bag tied tightly. When I get back to the hotel, there werent any salads. It was now pouring down rain so I didnt go back. I should have just went across the street to Dairy Queen.
I eat there a lot. The other day I had one of the new items and it was very good. Next week Im going to try another new item that caught my eye.I love the blond chick that waits tables. Nice place, good food and nice people.
We stopped by for breakfast and were Very pleasantly surprised! The food was served on time and perfectly delicious. The owner Carol is a local and shared historical stories with our family about the area, we spent the day exploring the county via Carols recommendation and returned for a steak dinner that was cook to perfection! Be sure to stop by if you are in the area...for some regional wines and great local stories.
Much better than other reviews suggested - service was friendly and attentive. My chicken fettucini was excellent: firm noodles with a thick cream- based sauce. And...its open til 9pm open on Monday.
The atmosphere is a bit dark. The place was empty when we walked in @ 3 on a summer Tuesday. The food was good ....standard fare. Our waitress was friendly and attentive.
