Greenhouse Restaurant - Restaurant in Noorder-Paarl, South Africa
Went Bastille weekend. Didn’t have a good experience . Service was slow, and the supposed “Firefood” was icy cold, hard and the roll was bordering on stale.
Babylonstoren is my favourite place for an off day. You can spend the whole day wondering around the gardens. Finish the day with the Greenhouse scones and tea. A truly special treat. 😍
Set in Babylonstoren this restaurant has a great menu with a variety of well put together meals. Enjoy your food under the shade of the trees and wander around the farm afterwards.
The setting is lovely. The service is cozy. Unfortunately, the menu selection is too standard—underwhelming, even—"basic", as the kids say. Premium price for meh experience.
The gardens are beautiful but the food was a bit of a disappointment. A bit of a limited menu. I was eager to try the greenhouse restaurant as I was told a lot of the ingredients and are sourced from the garden. The food was okay. Not something to rave about. We ordered a Boerewors which was R60 and all it was a plain toasted roll buttered with a sausage that was so dry and unflavourful. Yet so many herbs and spices were mention in making the sausage. No onions or tomato relish. They did have three jars with sauces but nothing that could help this displeasing and sad boerewors. This also did not include chips.I also had the salmon sandwich and the biltong sandwich which to a relief was of a generous portion and actually tasted good. Luckily not a complete disappointment. The menu was limited but then when you wanted to order some items off the menu, it was unavailable as it was sold out which made the small menu even smaller. We ordered cocktails too, two were done well and the other tasted like juice.I wanted to order the pot pie and then they said they can do a veggie version of the green curry but then would use a tomato base and wasn’t a green curry even . So why say you can do a veg version.I will definitely visit the gardens but not sure if I will go eat there. Maybe I will have better luck at Babel the restaurant.
We did not mind waiting 20min to be seated. We found the food very disappointing, on the kiddies menu a macaroni cheese , which our child was not interested in. So we had to order just chips. The only salad available was mostly fruit with tomato and mozzarella cheese. Lacking in flavor and needed something like seeds , nuts or a protein. I had the sandwich, with biltong, no other option with a meat or anything substantial. I could only taste anything but the bread. The menu does not offer anything else of interest that will make me want to return to try.
Fantastic place, awesome food, the sausage is a highlight.. just a small note, is it really necessary for waiters to bring any little thing in a heavy wooden box? It looks pretty, sure, but Im certain their backs dont appreciate it at the end of the day
Its a beautiful place with amazing food! They put so much love in their products. Absolutely amazing..
Amazing morning with family and a great venue. Plan to spend more time than you originally planned. Beautiful gardens to meander in and Greenhouse Restaurant is reasonably priced to have nice refreshments.
Beautiful peaceful setting. However we were disappointed by the food. We arrived at 10 and the quiche which was advertised on the board wasn’t available at 10am. We then ordered the boerewors roll and while the relish was tasty, the roll was dry and there wasn’t any onion or extras with it. My husband reminded me that we get much more delicious boerie rolls at the truck outside builders warehouse for a third of the price!
Beautiful setting but the food is quite average with a limited selection, particularly for vegetarians. Its not a patch on Babel so would recommend getting your reservation there early!
Our food and drink was delicious, the Covid protocols are that there is a chair on each table facing away from the table where the staff deposit your order. You are asked to return the used items to the tray here for collection. Its simple and it works.Being Babylonstoren the surroundings are of course beautiful.
Scones were overheated which made them very brittle. Service was slow once we were seated.
We loved Babylonstoren and the gardens were amazing, but were really disappointed in ths Greenhouse Restaurant. We arrived at 3:15, and the restaurant closed at 4 that day. Since there were no staff at the covid health screening point (the restaurant was empty except for 1 other tablewe sanitized ourselves and signed in.While we were looking for a table (still unattendedwe were very rudely reprimanded by one of the waitrons (Shanéafter she had been angrily staring at us while making a point of not helping. Eventually she told us that we have to wait outside the restaurant until someone helped us. We told her that we waited for a long while and no one assisted us, but we did sign in and sanitized. She responded rudely that it doesnt matter and that we have to go out of the restaurant and wait to be seated, even though the place was empty. We went out of the restaurant, waited for a different waitron, showed her that we already signed in, and then she showed us to the exact same table we were about to sit at before Shané told us to leave. Completely unnecessary. It took us a total of 20 minutes to be seated since we signed in.After we were seated we were again rudely told "the kitchen is closing very soon".The restaurant was a huge let down compared to the photos of it available online and the staff are seriously obnoxious. I didnt order anything to eat, but I thought the menu seemed overpriced.
Fabulous food beautifully presented and didnt break the bank. Staff very friendly and efficient. A great day out ....exceptional place to go for a day out.
Food was divine and really well presented. Covid protocols are unique whereby the waiter place all your items on a drop-off section and you collect from there. Really innovative. When you are done you place all your items there again.
Food was just ok , the selection on the menu is rather underwhelming as well. The service also needs to be addressed, putting food and drinks down in a crate on a chair next to our table certainly has nothing to do eith service. We also have to basically clear our own table by packing everything back into the crate when we are done. Our waitress was gone for very long intervals as well so theres a lot of room for improvement. If you want a good overall experience i wouldnt recommend the greenhouse restaurant.
I really dont want to be rude, but that food was a shame.„Green thai curry“. That food has never seen coconut milk although announced. It is like a fricasse.Sandwich bread was poor, same as „firefood“. The bread is as soft as a pillow. The place is very lovely, service is friendly, but i recommend not to eat here if you are doing the wine tram. You will be disappointed.Excuse me guys
Beautiful restaurant! Delicious menu, tried some amazing new meals. Will definitely return!
I tried the firefood. It consisted of a dry roll, a thin piece of beef sausage and a jar of jalapeno sauce. Tasteless. What a waste of money and time. Ive gone to Babylonstoren before but this was my most disappointing experience to date. Suffice to say I will never go there again neither will I recommend it to others. This is not what one would expect from a place with the statue and experience that this farm offers. Our experience at the Greenhouse restaurant does not even deserve one star but its seems I dont have an option.
Excellent food, fantastic service and love the restaurant set up. We got there for brunch and by the time we left it was filling up so our timing was perfect. Thoroughly impressed my folks visiting from JHB. The walk through Babylonstoren was well worth it too
Setting is beautiful and coffee was great but the food needs attention. Pork sandwich was far too sweet and the lamb and waterblommetjie pie grossly underseasoned.
Absolutely love the Greenhouse restaurant at Babylonstoren. The meals are absolutely beautifully presented and tasty, however a MAJOR let down is the service. Our waiter took our order, brought our food to the table and never returned. I really do wish the service matched the 5 star worthy taste and presentation of their food - especially considering the prices you’re paying.
A really great spot for lunch! Beautiful setting, wonderful food and friendly staff!
Really disappointed. Second rate service, food is brought in a crate and simply put down on a chair next to the table for a customer to serve themselves, the chairs and tables are flimsy cheap second rate camp furniture, the structure is unheated and also has no air-conditioning for summer. We were told that the doors had to be kept open because of covid when the structure is only half occupied by tables, the other half being given over to plants, and other apertures were open. This resulted in the structure being freezing cold, taking on the outside temperature. In summer it would be sweltering hot. I will not be returning. Not impressed.
Such a wonderful outdoor experience, just a pity they dont cater for people who have difficulty to walk. Enjoyed the scones and drinks
During each of my prior visits I did not get a chance to try out this restaurant, as there was always a waiting list. Seeing that they were always busy, I thought wow this restaurant must be really good and I was therefore keen to eventually visit at some point. Finally that day came, I managed to get a table after waiting for about 15 minutes. To my surprise I was utterly disappointed. Firstly, we sat in a section that had two garden misters spraying directly onto us. Maybe if it was just for 5 minutes, it wouldve been okay, but it continued for some time - causing our table to have a wet layer and our 3 year old being very unhappy about water constantly blowing in her face. Secondly, the menu was not what I expected. Besides the kids boerewors roll option, the only other kids dish on the menu is mac and cheese. Babylonstoren is a place that many families visit, which means lots of kids visiting too. Therefore I do not understand why the menu is not more kid friendly. The boerewors roll and layered sandwich that we ended up ordering was really not the greatest and definitely not something I would come back for. The service was not the best either, our waiter did not bother to come and ask if we were okay or whether we needed anything else. Just to ask for the bill alone took some time...
Really nice place for lunch. The restaurant Babel is still the best in this beautiful farm, but the Greenhouse food is also very well prepared and presented. The choice is a little limited but the quality is great. A new special was the pizza, definitely worth a try, one of the closest to Italian tradition that I found in Cape Town.
Never disappointed at Babylonstorens Greenhouse restaurant. All meals are freshky prepared with produce from their own gardens. Juices are nutritious and delicious. My personal favourite is their pie filled with wholesome greens and organic meat.Even though theres a lot of soace, be prepared to wait in a queue for a seat - it can get quite busy. A solution is to write your name on the waiting list and then stroll around through the garden while waiting for a table to open up. Best time to visit is spring/summer when plants are in full bloom... A gorgeous place... Dont forget to visit the health garden behind the restaurant.
Love this little place! A friend and I had their boerewors roll with chips on the side and LOVED it! Quick service and food was fast and fresh! Definitely a restaurant to stop at after walking through the gardens to refuel and relax 🪴😎 Waitresses were wonderful ladies and made us feel welcome. Will be returning soon!
Wonderful experience at the Greenhouse Restaurant in Babylonstoren! The staff were so inviting and friendly. Ice tea on the menu is a must try - sooo good! The sandwiches were not what I expected, but I was pleasant surprised with the taste.Although the presentation of the food is great, I wonder if it might not be a little more efficient to serve the sandwiches on something a little more durable than paper? Just a thought.Loved it so much, Ill definitely come back and recommend it to my friends and family! Thanks.
I cannot believe this place has a rating above 2. Complete tourist trap. Honestly the worse meal weve had in the winelands in over a year. I cant actually remember anything ever being worse. Very limited menu, mostly sandwiches. All the bread was was old and disgusting, my son ordered a kids macaroni and cheese tasted like pasta with water and flower. So unbelievably bad. Come for a walk in the garden take some pictures but do yourself a favour and eat somewhere else.
I just love Babylonstoren farm. Perfectly manicured gardens; vegetable patches and fruit orchards. Wonderful small shops situate in ancient farm buildings selling delicacies and fresh produce. The greenhouse restaurant is situated on the farm in an outside shady area offering interesting small food. Just a delightful outing for a family and a must-do for visitors.
Great place for taking a rest and you can enjoy reasonable food!!
Loved the boerie roll on offer and the cold brew coffee they sell. The restaurant is situated at the back of the gardens and has a wonderfully calm and peaceful vibe no matter how busy it gets.
Haloumi sandwich on wholemeal bread, fresh turmeric and carrot juice
If you are looking for a great restaurant to grab lunch, I can definitely recommend the Greenhouse @ Babylonstoren. As the name suggests, the restaurant is located inside a greenhouse where you are surrounded by plants, and they have an outside seating area as well. This is a perfect location in spring time when the gardens come alive after the cold winter. All ingredients are fresh, of a high quality and very tasty. The Greenhouse would be good for groups or romantic dates alike, and the cherry on-top is that after your meal you can go for a stroll through the beautiful gardens of Babylonstoren. They should have space available if you are a small group, but they can get very busy so it would be best to make a booking if you want to be guaranteed space so that you can experience what they have to offer.
Really great cute outdoor café-like set up. Super great fresh and wholesome food. Really enjoyed the biltong layered sandwich and the potato wedges are in a league of its own. Perfect pit stop while walking around the gardens. The waiters are also super great and really helpful. Would rate this as a definite stop for any local or tourist.
Fresh, home-grown meals that is not too bad on the pocket. Nice outside setting with enough shade and space between tables. Try the mango and passion fruit icicle!
We didn’t have lunch but had a wonderful garden tour, Beautiful gardens and open spaces. So peaceful
A must go to . But honestly bring some of your own mustard to out onto the sandwiches . Other than that its the most beautiful place .
The surroundings are just beautiful here. The menu is very basic and more picnic style food. The quality of the ingredients were fresh and super tasty, coming from the surrounding gardens. I do however feel that the food was a bit pricey for what it was, but hey I guess you cant put a price on the beauty of the surroundings. The staff also super friendly.
Tranquil setting which makes this place hard to leave. The time stands still here.Meals made of the vegetables grown on their farm, nice and simple menu, friendly stuff, delicious food, good wine. The one and only compliant would be the size portions. Felt hungry again in half an hour after finishing the meal (it’s wasn’t a light one, don’t be fooled, polished off with two desserts, yet still not filling)
Loved it, locally farmed and high quality food. Really nice waiters, we will be back just for the food.
A beautiful venue for a small function. The food was wonderful: the salad was fascinating with unusual additions such as loquots and golden beetroot, and the ice tea delicious. The service from the restaurant staff was great - they were attentive, friendly and helpful.
We had an excellent meal at the Greenhouse Restaurant at Babylonstoren. The food was fresh and delicious, the vibes of the restaurant were amazing being inside - and everything just fit perfect for the season. I would absolutely recommend grabbing lunch here!
A beautiful bistro style restaurant surrounded by trees.Antique furniture & farm style food makes it a great experience.
Pleasant experience. Absolutely loved the aesthetic appeal of the greenhouse with all the suspended planters and very organic look and feel. However, was disappointed with the service, as the waiters/waitresses (that had attended to uswere not clued up with the types of teas on offer 💯
Organacly grown fresh food well made grown on the farm with excellent views. Highly recommended
Beautiful garden surrounding and a unique fresh menu. Friendly an a relaxed vibe.
