Stopped by to check out the scenic overlook on impulse on an early morning drive. Absolutely gorgeous. The overlook is charming and Green Ridge is a well-maintained forest thats obviously treated with care. I could have spent hours there. This might change later in the day but it was not busy at all: I didnt see a soul except birds and cicadas.(A note: the pathway to the overlook is marked as accessible, and thats MOSTLY true - its paved, and not too steep - but someone who cant walk very well might have trouble with the 440 ft trail. There are also a few small potholes.)

A beautiful view with a little under 500 steps..It was beautiful and i assume this place will be wonderful for fall colors and i am planning on visiting this place in fall as well. They are maintaining the place very well (keep it that way please). Decent parking lot, bathrooms available and they have the park office at the parking lot and the information board is available with all the available trials and all. There is a little shelter available as well.

Great spot in Maryland to stop, stretch your legs and take in some scenery. Bathrooms available at this spot, only one drink vending machine behind the main office, not sure it works.

I stopped by on my way home since it was a quick little stop and the view at this point is so beautiful. I plan on coming back during the different seasons to see how this place looks. The quick detour delayed me maybe about 15 minutes so its definitely worth the stop.

This place is great for a rustic car camping trip. The sites are far enough apart that you can’t see the people next to you!

We went on a 2 day hike in 6/22. While the overlooks were enjoyable we found the park to be not maintained very well. Some of the trials were overgrown, one trail marker was just plain wrong. A large part of our trip was just routed along an access road, for miles, which we all agreed were much harder on the feet.We saw no one else except a day hiking couple, and I feel this park does not get used a lot. Most (if not allpaid campsites we saw were empty, and this is the busy season.Ticks were a BIG problem, we picked off scores of them, and I would recommend everyone wear long pants tucked into their boots.Overall with West Virginia is right across the river and PA only a few miles away, I feel they have a better backpacking/hiking experience.

Second time at GRSF. Incredible scenery. Big sites. This time camped by large creek. Wish I brought my mini chainsaw or had firewood delivered. 9 adults go thru lots of wood and it was tiring being only one gathering wood and breaking down with handsaw and ax

I think there is some wrong information in google map. Its more like a hiking place. If you want to hike, you have to go early morning. There is nothing more to see without tree and hills.

Best primitive camping you can find within an hour of Hagerstown. Been camping here a couple times a year for many years, not all the sites are awesome but have a secret handful of favorites you cant beat.

If you want to get away and go somewhere where there are trees and nature and not many people, Green Ridge State Forest offers 100 campsites. Each campsite is spread far apart, so you dont see your neighbor unless someone is driving by. If you have an SUV or jeep, it will be better since some of the dirt roads have good size ruts and puddles, but we have made it in a Honda Accord. The farther you go down the mountain, more ruts and steep inclined roads. It was $10 for a campsite per night. If the visitor center is closed, you can sign up on the bulletin board for a site and put your money in an envelope to slip in the brown metal post slot.Green Ridge State forest is on several mountains. You can hike on the dirt roads or trails. The roads, since they are on mountains, are very challenging even to very in-shape bicyclists.Tips:- Print a map of the campsite locations and roads before you leave if you are not sure if you will get to the visitor center before they close.- You need to bring your own containers for water - filled. There is no water available and the bathrooms at the visitor center were locked when we went in June.- Bring your own shovel, bags or toilet. There are no bathrooms at your campsites. I bought a tent for privacy (Leader Accessories Pop Up Shower Tent Dressing Changing Tent Pod Toilet Tent on Amazon). Not many people will drive past your campsite, but it seemed they did when I was taking care of business.- Bring bug spray. In June, I had about 13 bites on each arm and leg.- Each site has a picnic table and camping ring but no grill. No post for a lantern.- We had to stay in the overflow camping field one year with many other campers. No bathroom facilities and the trees were thin and sparse. The Paw Paw tunnel is a hike you can do. It will take about 30-45 minutes to drive to it.

We went on a small camping trip here. Stayed at site 65. The view was amazing. We were on top of a hill overlooking the Potomac. At first we were skeptical of the site since we had three young children but it ended up being great. We road the dirt roads and visited the different locations. This was a great primitive camping experience and the little ones are already ready to return. Next time well go when its not so cold.

Primitive camping with lots of off-road opportunities. We arrived in 12 inches of snow in February. Definitely wouldnt have made it without a 4x4, required in some places. Very quiet as sites are a mile or so away from each other.

Great spread out camping sites, I get a little nervous driving on the roads in wet or snowy conditions without 4 wheel drive and the clearance of a truck, jeep, or SUV...but otherwise the campgrounds are wonderful.

Cant believe we havent made it out here before, despite visiting most other parks/forests in the area. Gorgeous state park with lots of room to explore and activities. We went at the start of deer season and it was a hunters paradise. We didnt hunt but did use the range which was a nice, inexpensive amenity to have. Hunters were all very friendly and respectful. We didnt spot any violations at the range or in the woods which was nice considering we didnt spot an authority or ranger the entire time we were there.

This is a huge state park and a general review does zero justice - but here we are. Great time to go, much less packed then summer months. Trails are well maintained for the most part and there are a lot of ways to get into the park. Conditions are relatively dry right now even though it’s been raining recently. Recommend coming for the vast nature and openness.

One of the best parks in MD. Trails from Potomac River to mountains and great park to do some modest back road four wheel driving. Terrific views of river from top of mountains with convenient access to supplies in Little Orleans and Flintstone.. It would help to have better directions to public range but overall it has something for every outdoor enthusiasts.

Always a win in my book. Sites are mostly far apart so nobody is disturbing you and vice versa. Looking for certain criteria for your site, like lots of trees for hammocks or easier access with a 2wd vehicle? The folks at the State Forest HQ will be able to guide you to the best site for you. They have helped us out on multiple occasions. Heads up, the sites we use are primitive. That means you get a fire ring and a picnic table. Thats it.

Green Ridge was beautiful and so easy to get to and use. The camp sites were clean and well maintained while still being primitive. The views were amazing. There was a good blend of secluded and non secluded sites, for whichever one is looking for.Pro tip: when you check in, check the last page of the sign out llist to make sure the site you want is actually available.

Beautiful stop, primitive camping, self registertation at the HQ by the main road. 10$/night up till 6ppl a site. Register atHD before heading to campsite. Site is huge and secluded.. the 24,25,26 are on top of the hill, so I could hear the highway nearby, hence the star down.Beautiful sunset here, huge fire pit, tons of dry wood despite storm in the woods. Pretty empty on a tuesday and so many birds singing!

It was calm and peaceful. The locals absolutely were some of the kindest folks I have ever met! There were a few closed roads and someone stopped to help me find my way to the c&o towpath. Miles and miles of trees and hiking. This is a beautiful place.

We stopped here for a quick stretch on the way to D.C. If I had time or the energy it looks like a very neat place to explore. We walked down a path that was just behind the information headquarters off of Headquarters DR NE. Offered a nice overlook of the Fifteenmile Creek valley!

The park is absolutely beautiful, with seeming a never ending expanse to explore between hiking and driving, but during my visit we had a lot of rain. This left many of the roads in a state that would be impossible to traverse in anything less than a quite capable 4x4. With a lot of caution and thought I didnt find any roads or trails I couldnt get through with my stock Nissan Xterra, but I would very strongly recommend avoiding the road that connects all of the "4x4 only" campsites without a very capable, modified offroading rig and a lot of confidence and preparation for vehicle damage if the ground is at all muddy in other areas of the park.

Ive stayed here twice near the Pink Lick Trail. For $10 a night, the primitive camping sites are a great way to spend a chilly weekend with family and friends. This is the perfect place for campers like to rough it, but have friends that do not. We call it Primitive Glamping. You can sleep with a ground tarp and quilt, a hammock, or a massive tent-mansion.There are miles and miles of hiking trails with great views. Most of the campsites are driveable for car campers. The only things we heard while camping were hunters, the rifle range, a small pack of coyote, and the distant hum of Rt. 68. The sites are positioned far enough apart to be fairly private.
