Great Taste Restaurant - Chinese restaurant in Dunedin, New Zealand
Wasnt going to go because of.the reviews. Yes food was low but when asked to be topped up it was done. Food was tender and very tasty. Same as getting Chinese anywhere tbh. Only let down was the ice cream machine ran out. Will definitely be going back.
Great improvement from when I was last there 👏🏻 loved it and the people where so nice
Absolutely shocked at how little variety there is now and how there were no staff around to ask for help when everything was emptied booked a table for sisters 13th birthday and paid over 200 just to be ripped off ice cream machine was broken no mash potatoes no rice barely any salads no fruits would not recommend at all! The one staff we did speak to was rude and short with us
Something for everyone. Been taking the kids for years - our favourite go to in Dunedin
Most of the food was constantly empty and slow to be refilled, and when filled they only put a small amount in. The deserts were also the same, the cream and jelly were empty and refused to refill and the soft serve machine was empty and refused to fill, bought out a 2L tub instead, they refilled the apple pie begrudgingly when asked. Also the arrangement of where things were doesn’t make much sense, like pickle and beetroot with the deserts and the apple pie over with the soups etc. The food tasted fine, but for $30 you expect the food to be stocked up more frequently. I wouldn’t go again.
I went once and will never go back. The food was disgusting and what little I did eat gave me food poisoning. Unless you like rank food and having explosive diarrhoea, best to go somewhere else.
Lady at the counter was rude and abrupt. The corn chips were so stale I had to spit them out. Some of the meat was so tough it couldnt be eaten. Maybe if the food was edible you wouldnt need those terrible signs about being charged extra for wasting food? Used to be a really good place to eat its a shame it has gone downhill.
Terrible service. Hardly any hot food!!! Really disappointed and not worth the money! Sad that this has potential to be great. Should change your name to tastes not great restaurant.
The worst place I’ve been to. We looked around and before paying asked if dishes would be topped up to which the reply was ‘yes’. They took our payment before seating us, (unusual practice). What food there was, was tepid and been sitting in the warmers for a while. Popular dishes such as hot fries, rice, fried chicken were never refilled so we got none! Most trays were empty and never got refilled. It was cold in the restaurant and the service was non-existent. I am super angry I was lied to about the dishes being refilled and having to pay before eating. Do not go here. Trust the low rating and go somewhere else.
Horrible food, average to poor service. The empty meal trays were NOT topped up. I mean, how hard is it to top up the rice!? Far too overpriced for what’s on offer. And the chicken was pink and definitely not edible.
Always delicious food.Love the choices availableWould definitely recommend
It is OK. Paid $20 for lunch buffet, value for money. Not the best taste but not bad, I could enjoy it. They provide main and dessert.
For 3 adults one 6 year old $117.00 pork belly was cold just bear mimine of food. Which was nearly warm toilet was dirty no sanitizers or soap hadnt been cleaned. This Wednesday night. I never go back sacks of stuff laying in restaurant
Very disappointing hardly any food all hot food was empty and they took along time to put more food out and didnt full everything up . Not worth $30Food was ok i guess
Will not be going back. This place has slipped in quality since we last visited. Food selection poor and expensive
The food looks good but I had no idea about the sign that says you must pay for the leftover food on your plate because poor African kids are starving????
Terrible food. Not much selection considering its an all you can eat. Lots of empty food bins. All in all not good. Could go to a fish and chips shop for better and cheaper
Saw a few bad reviews for this place but I actually enjoyed my experience.I went on a very quiet afternoon and the lady kept topping up food only for me and my friend. Thank you for your effort of trying to please your customers. And the ice cream machine works beautifully unlike the one at Meridian Burger King which is always broken.
No fresh food and ice cream machine broken. Waste of money😠. Ask to look at food before paying.
Where do I start! It was horrid! The service was abrupt for a start, there was absolutely no food brought out, and the food that was there was pathetic tiny little amounts, one of the salad s was off!! And the fried chicken tasted really weird, I walked out and went to McDonalds! Please please do not go here!! U might up getting sick and its a waste of money, plus they dont bring out food regularly enough, was only me there and another lady at midday who was also puzzled on where all the food was??, I use to love coming here, it use to be way better quality and cheaper, new owners need to step up or step out! Will not return until it has a whole new revamp!
It did not seem to be the Great Taste I remembered when it opened. It used to be packed. There were 5 other people there on a Wednesday night. It did not have the selection of foods I remembered. I asked to add drinks. The drink machine was broken. I asked about cream frezze. That machine was broken and a note said to ask for ice cream .I was on keto so really wanted the meat and salad selection. The pork belly was over cooked. But the price of meals had gone up? Staff not welcoming and no personality. What has happened here? 2 stars.
Started right from the phone call to ask if they had a table for 2, couldve been anyone answering, had to ask if I had the right place. Arrived, she charged us, so I asked if we could have a drink. Got sorted, got a table and noticed after a sip my drink was expired. It was only the best before date, but I expect better from a restaurant. Offered me a completely different drink or a refund for it. As for the food, the corn chips were stale and chewy, the spaghetti was stuck together, it was just not a good experience. Certainly wont be going back.
Went to Great Taste for lunch today with a friend. So very disappointing, any of the hot food was cold.Ice-cream machine was out order. No Wasabi for the sushi. And when I asked for it! She never told me it was there. And then with out a word of a lie. It wouldnt even been 1/2 a teaspoon full. The apple crumble was just so disgusting sitting in a bay-marie with the lid on. So it was a gluggy mess. And to finish of no one came to clear the table.😡
Just find this restaurant start Chinese meal recently.Booking a table for my daughter’s Birthday dinner. It was amazing food since I’ve been New Zealand.High level recommended!
Terrible food, poor quality, cold in temperature, food containers mostly empty. Great Taste not interested at all to try and resolve issues when I wrote in a complaint. Sadly it used to be a great place for a group but no longer.
I have good memories of this restaurant from previous years when taking the kids there when they were younger. Unfortunately, we left rather disappointed tonight. Less options than before, the trays were near empty and not topped up until empty. The food was ok, except for the crumble which I couldnt finish. I was looking forward to a glass of wine with dinner, however there are no alcohol sales due to their license application being rejected. For $30 each, I think it was overpriced for what was on offer. I hope they get things back on track as there is always a place for a good buffet restaurant here.
Terrible food, unfriendly staff. Very little on offer and they only topped up every now and there. We used to go here when it first opened and it was fresh and tasty. It was value for money, however that is the complete opposite now. Will not be going back. It was a complete rip off. You can get far better food for the same if not a fraction of the cost at your local takeaway. All the signs in the restaurant were tacky, untasteful and inviting.
Went in for lunchtime service. Very little on offer. My partner had only had one bite of the fish and it tasted off. He spoke to the waiter who refunded only half of his bill. I didnt feel like eating after that so we left hungry. Not a nice atmosphere and staff unfriendly.
Spend more time waiting for them to put food on the buffet.Went back 2nd time to try again thinking id got a bad day.Total waste of $ and wont be goung back. Overpriced and hardly any decent food put out on the buffet. Do not order a drink, way overpriced
This place gets so many bad reviews but I think people need to manage their expectations and take a reality check. Ive only ever been for lunch so cant comment about the dinner service but it has undoubtedly got to be the best value lunch in town. No, the food isnt flash. Its like getting takeaways but for the price you cant expect more. Plus you get to have dessert and tea /coffee. Every time Ive been its been clean. Cant complain at all and I always walk away with a full tummy.
Hot food was barely warm, poor selection of food and a disinterested staff. I have been to this restaurant many times and it was normally a good experience but on Friday 13th at lunch time this was anything but.
Will never go here again. Food was cold and rarely refilled. Variety was poor. You are better off going to a real Chinese restaurant and ordering a nice spread.
The ladie behind the desk was consistently sniffing behind me when I was eating, making me feel uncomfortable and weird. The chips, chicken and the fryer foods were cold. Evennwhen they came out into the bay Marie, the lettuce for the salads was off, the soup had a big skin on top of it, for eighteen dollers a feed, I would never turn back up to this place again, just felt very uncomfortable.
Just awful for years me and my family have been coming here decided to treat my my sister and nephew today half of what is pictured isnt available no customer service whatsoever food was cold and dry and old. Sign saying "extra $10 if to much wastage on plate please take what you can eat" I will because there was only just enough but isnt that the point of a buffet? I know great taste isnt everyones favourite but we have always enjoyed it and its convenient for the price. Not anymore.
Good food, but the new layout doesnt quite make as much sense as their old layout. The new layout also causes it to be allot more crowded as the most popular foods are all grouped together. Over $80 for three of us, and the atmosphere can get very loud with children running around and yelling.
Really disappointed. This used to be our go-to for birthdays etc. Its now ridiculously over priced. Used to pay $20 for all you can eat plus a bottomless drink. Now its $28 not even including a drink and to he honest I could get the same food from my local takeaway store. Boohoo :(The staff are very nice though.
Food is good , no drinks here really is the only problem is only water unless you pay 3 Dollars for a can. Food never cold they have salad options , soups , fried food , dessert options. All tastes good never had a bad experience.
Very expensive for a buffet restaurant $62 for 2 adults with a can of drink. Manager less than welcoming and was inconvenienced. Could get a better atmosphere at McDonalds or subway. Dont bother.
Yeah it’s alright. But what I really love about this place is the apple crumble with whipped cream! Want to know a secret? Don’t buy a glass for a soft drink (which you have to do if you want a soft drinkand just use the cups they give you for water to fill up with the fizzy drinks. I think we’ve all done it!
As someone who cannot eat gluten, it is great to have a restaurant buffet that caters to allergies and medical conditions. However, last night there was a list with gluten free options (piece of paperand blue stickers that are supposed to indicate gluten free next to the food items. In many cases they did not add up (things were marked with blue stickers but not on the list, or on the list but didnt have blue stickers). Other foods (ie the entire salad bar and steamed rice and potentially the desert sauceshad no blue stickers but looked gluten free, where as blue stickers (not on listwere on a number of foods fried in batter and egg noddles potentially with soy with no explanation as to what was in them instead. I actually found eating here super stressful and when I asked a staff member got told to stick with the list. If it was properly labelled it would be a reasonable price and would go more often, sadly at this point there are too many other restaurants in Dunedin that cater confidently for the gluten free customer. Would have preferred to send an email but couldnt locate one.
At $25 dollars the food was rather disappointing. Since one dish is not good enough to eat on its own and with the restrictions on the amount of plates you can use, you end up mixs foods and flavors on one plate and end up with a mess. The actual restaurant decor is very nice and looks expensive and the dessert was good. But at $25 dollars i would have rather stayed home and made some 2 minute noodles.
Buffets are hard to keep amazing these days, and sadly Great Taste has fallen into the "was amazing when it opened" category for us.Still seems to get busy-ish, but the 2 times we visited people literally came in, had a plate then left. Not like the old sit and eat as much as you can for as long as you can days. The sushi is down to one type - cucumber/carrot. The fried foods are great if you come at the right time to get fresh hot morsels, otherwise be prepared to have to sauce them up.We did see one kitchen staff pour water into one dish and stir it up while we were up getting some food, I guess to thin out the sauce peaked it go further?? Fair enough, to do whatever wee tricks ya need to, but perhaps not while paying customers are there and can see you doing it?So we went twice, but not sure Id return for a third.Sorry GT, loved you back in the day thou.
They should rename it "tastes average" I will admit the food looked good and they had a good selection but most of it tastes, well, pretty sub par to be fair. Simple dishes that I usually would love and could have been done really well, were almost inedible. I tried pretty much everything and the only thing I actually finished was the dessert. This is coming from someone who loves food and will pretty much eat anything. But the fact that it was $25, thats a pretty expensive dessert. I dont think ill be going back again. 👍
$15 for lunch, really worth the price, And tastes great as the name. I’m so full
Average food from appetizers to main dishes but I enjoyed the desserts.
I spent only $11 for their lunch buffet service with a variety of food choices. Fish and chips, chicken nibbles and ice cream. How can they offer such amazing foods at such a low price? I think it is not fair to compare their food to other Buffet restaurants providing more choices at higher prices. We will definitely go and taste their food again when in Dunedin. Hopefully next time, there is curry!
Wonderful restaurant with tasty food....lavish buffet @ $15 only... enjoyed lunch with friends...
A good variety of food choices although some of it is average however theres always something to please most people. My kids love getting to go there as they love directing the accompanying adults on how to make their ice creams.
Really great service and generally good food. Its a smorgasbord so not going to be high quality fare. However lots of nice little touches eg fresh fruit and roasted peanuts in the salad. Also nachos and lovely bean sauce.
Low price with well enough food . Good ice cream
