Nossa Sra. de Guadalupe, Portugal, Evora
Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro - Tourist attraction in Evora, Portugal
Nice and quiet place to visit. The road is a bit sandy but can be done.
An amazing place near Evora. Cork oak trees all around. Theres a cleared space for parking and a short walk to the funereal site.
Long drive from Evora plus either a long walk or potholed road to the site. The pictures posted for guided tours are very misleading.
This is basically a pile of rocks in the shape of a church or mausoleum, but the history behind it is astounding. It’s not every day that you come into contact with something like this — or at least that we know of. It’s worth the detour if you’re into ancient history and getting out in rural areas. The hike to the ruins is pretty fun, taking you past a cow farm along dirt road. Felt adventurous on a trip mostly marked by big cities and smaller towns.
Great tour with fully qualified guide. Left evora tourist office. Amazing
is enormous a extraordinary expiriance its a fantastic expiriance truly fantastic not really possible to get inside. the surrounding stones are all connected to the monument. needs time to sink in. open space no tickets needed
Nice but not easy for handicapped.
Spectacular Dolmen many thousands of years old, well preserved and one of the largest still in existence.
Very interesting site, but the road is really rough. Large potholes make it almost impassable for a small rental car, and it was a concern that we could damage the bottom of the car. We drove very slowly and carefully… there were no other cars when we were there. But, the site is truly very fascinating and unique!
In the middle of nowhere with no-one around at all amazing place!
Very cool megalithic site. Had the whole site to ourselves. Road was in worse condition than previous reviewers experienced with large puddles and mud. Didnt think our small rental car would make it through so parked by the farm buildings and walked up. Only added a 10-15 minute walk. Ended up being a pretty walk and very worth it!
Impresionante!
A highly significant site ... perhaps disappointing it is not better presented
The great dolmen of Zambujeiro is a must-see monument, if for no other reason than its status as the largest dolmen in megalithic Europe. The site has many other attractions, in spite of the sloppy archaeological restoration that was inflicted on it during the twentieth century. One hopes that the dolmen will be restored to something resembling its original grandeur. Zambujeiro was constructed into the side of a hill and is generally oriented east/west, similar to its close neighbor, the Cromlech of Almendres. The monument’s width is between 5 to 6 meters across and 4 to 5 meters high. It is braced in several areas by flat stone piles, and its broken capstone has been removed and lies to the west nearby. The monument is easy to reach by car and well signposted. It is popular with New Agers, Neopagans, and neoshamans, many of whom come from long distances to practice their rituals of nature spirituality. During my site visits I have discovered several small stone altars in the dolmen’s central chamber. Zambujeiro was classified a national monument November 22, 1971.
Neat little stop on our road trip! Worth the detour if you are driving through!
Brilliant place
Just out of Evora
Very impressive!Sadly very damaged..
Largely complete dolmen. You can walk round it and look in the top thanks to the terrain. Track to drive up is rough but not nearly as bad as at Almendres Cromlech.
Must see if you have never seen one. But dont just show up. Book a guided tour to take you here and a couple other places. It was one of the best activities we did in Portugal.
What a pity that it is broken. It was the biggest dolmen we ever saw. It should be restored.
Breathtaking under appreciated and historically important
While visiting the other menhirs you can visit this one, this is the biggest one. This was a place where the dead were buried. You cant enter it though (and its not as big as you would think it would befor safety reasons. You can walk around it and watch inside from the top, but its just empty. Its located a bit remotely and the road leading to it is really a crater landscape with deep pits and many rocks. The location where its situated is pretty cool and desolate.
A little off the beaten path, but worth the trip.
well worth the detour
Awesome example of a Neolithic structure. A sobering example of early amateur archeologists destruction of history in the name of contemporary culture. Soon to be lost to the elements. Truly sad!
Amazing prehistoric site. Immense rocks forming a pathway to a huge Dolmen. Three kilometers of rutted dirt road to the parking lot and another 1/2 kilometer walking to the site itself. No services, no amenities, almost no people. and very impressive.
A very interesting and mysterious site. The access road is an unsurfaced track, and a bit bumpy in places - ok for a regular car, but need to be careful!
Interesting and mysterious journey into history.
One of the biggest and oldest stones in the peninsula, saddly its been boarded up for health and safety reasons, dont want megatonne stones falling on people.
Cool.
